Abstract
Hydroxyapatite-based materials have been widely used in countless applications, such as bone regeneration, catalysis, air and water purification or protein separation. Recently, much interest has been given to controlling the aspect ratio of hydroxyapatite crystals from bulk samples. The ability to exert control over the aspect ratio may revolutionize the applications of these materials towards new functional materials. Controlling the shape, size and orientation of HA crystals allows obtaining high aspect ratio structures, improving several key properties of HA materials such as molecule adsorption, ion exchange, catalytic reactions, and even overcoming the well-known brittleness of ceramic materials. Regulating the morphogenesis of HA crystals to form elongated oriented fibres has led to flexible inorganic synthetic sponges, aerogels, membranes, papers, among others, with applications in sustainability, energy and catalysis, and especially in the biomedical field.

Abstract
In this work, a new strategy has been reported for the portable detection of H2S based on Fe-doped hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (Fe-HA) using a colorimetric paper test strip integrated with a smartphone platform. Fe-HA NPs were fabricated successfully via recycling waste coal ash. The obtained probe response toward H2S was through a distinct visual color change. The sensing mechanism is based on the displacement reaction, in which PO4 3- is replaced by S2-. The prepared test strip shows high selectivity, and the other compounds containing thiol and sulfur anion have a negligible effect on the detection of H2S. The designed scheme is applied for H2S detection in the concentration range of 0.5-130 ppm with a limit of detection of 70 ppb. Furthermore, such a disposable sensor was used as a practical system for monitoring H2S in actual water samples, suggesting the promising potential of this platform for suitable analysis of H2S in an aqueous environment.

Abstract
In recent years, metallic nanoparticle (NP)–two-dimensional material hybrids have been widely used for photocatalysis and photoreduction. Here, we introduce a femtosecond laser reduction approach that relies on the repetitive ablation of recast layers by usi–ng temporally shaped pulses to achieve the fast fabrication of metallic NP–two-dimensional material hybrids. We selectively deposited silver-reduced graphene oxide (Ag–rGO) hybrids on different substrates under various fabrication conditions. The deposition of the hybrids was attributed to the redistribution of the cooling ejected plume after multiple radiation pulses and the exchange of carriers with ejected plume ions containing activated species such as small carbon clusters and H2O. The proposed one-step in situ fabrication method is a competitive fabrication process that eliminates the additive separation process and exhibits morphological controllability. The Ag–rGO hybrids demonstrate considerable potential for chemomolecular and biomolecular detection because the surface-enhanced Raman scattering signal of the enhancement factor reached 4.04 × 108.

Abstract
Amino-functionalized two-dimensional (2D) MOFs have great potential in biosensors due to their excellent water solubility, high fluorescence, large specific surface area, good adsorption properties and good ability to enrich the target analytes. Fluorescence detection of hydrogen peroxide and glucose mostly relies on monitoring the single fluorescence intensity changes in a single excitation wavelength. Here, a ratiometric fluorescence sensor based on NH2-MIL-53(Al) nanosheets to sensitively detect H2O2 and glucose through enzymatic reactions was developed. o-Phenylenediamine (OPD) was oxidized by H2O2 in the presence of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Then, the oxidation product could be self-assembled on NH2-MIL-53(Al) nanosheets by hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking. The orbital interaction or the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between the nanosheets and the oxidation product could effectively quench the fluorescence of the nanosheets at 433 nm. At the same time, the oxidation product provided a new emission peak at 564 nm. The fluorescence ratio signal changes generated by this oxidation process were used to stably and sensitively detect H2O2 and glucose. Structural and mechanistic analysis was carried out by calculation methods such as AICD and ORCA to explore the π electron structure characteristics, the hole/electron orbitals and the quenching phenomenon. The detection limit was 26.9 nM for H2O2 and 0.041 μM for glucose. The detection of glucose in human serum has a satisfactory recovery of 97.4-102.8%. It is clear that the sensor has a good application prospect in real sample analysis.

Abstract
Facile yet simple platforms for the immobilization of biomolecules have always been a substantial requirement for the fabrication of proficient biosensors. In this study, we report a naphthyl substituted acetate functionalized ionic liquid (NpAc-IL) for the covalent anchoring of horseradish peroxidase (HRP), using which the direct electrochemistry of HRP was successfully accomplished and a H2O2 biosensor was developed. The naphthyl substitution on the NpAc-IL was utilized for the π-π stacking with the MWCNT modified GCE and the terminal -OCH3 group of NpAc-IL was used for the covalent attachment with the free -NH2 group of HRP via amide bond formation. High conducting nature of the newly designed ionic liquid (NpAc-IL), facilitated an improved communication with the deeply buried redox centre of the HRP, while the covalent bonding provided enhanced stability to the fabricated biosensor by stably holding the water soluble HRP enzyme on the electrode surface. Furthermore, incorporation of MWCNT on the sensor setup synergistically enhanced the sensitivity of the developed biosensor. Under optimized conditions, the fabricated biosensor showed an enhanced electrocatalytic reduction of H2O2 in the range of 0.01 to 2.07 mM with a limit of detection and sensitivity of 2.7 μM and 55.98 μA mM-1 cm-2 respectively. Further, the proposed biosensor was utilized for the sensing of H2O2 spiked in real samples. Moreover, the newly fabricated biosensor demonstrated excellent stability with improved sensitivity and selectivity towards H2O2 reduction. The superior analytical characteristics are attributed to the facile fabrication strategy using this newly developed acetate functionalized ionic liquid platform.

Abstract
Mesoporous hydroxyapatites were synthesized at room temperature using casein as a template, and key experimental factors, such as casein concentration, pH and extraction of casein in the final solids by washing and thermal treatment, were systematically investigated. The X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) patterns confirmed the synthesis of well-crystallized hydroxyapatite. The N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms were in agreement with the formation of mesoporous hydroxyapatite with a maximum surface area of 106m2g-1. Infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetry analysis were performed to investigate the extraction of casein in water in the post-synthesis stage. Pure mesoporous hydroxyapatite exhibited good BSA adsorption capacity higher than the one obtained for conventional hydroxyapatite.

In addition to the sonochemical method, two conventional methods present in literature were carried out to perform a comparative study. Various analysis methods including Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Energy-Dispersive Analysis of X-Rays (EDAX), and Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) have been applied for the characterization of nHA and its nanocomposite with marine-derived collagen isolated from Rhizostoma pulmo jellyfish. TEM micrographs revealed the sonochemically synthesized nHA nanoparticles to have a unique porous spherical shape with a diameter of approximately 60-80nm when compared to hydroxyapatite nanoparticles synthesized using the other two methods which had a typical needle shaped morphology. EDAX, XRD and FTIR results demonstrated that the obtained patterns belonged to hydroxyapatite. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is the main analyzing technique of the developed thrombin aptasensor. The proposed aptasensor has a detection limit of 0.25nM thrombin. For clinical application of the developed aptasensor, thrombin levels in blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples obtained from patients with Multiple Sclerosis, Myastenia Gravis, Epilepsy, Parkinson, polyneuropathy and healthy donors were analyzed using both the aptasensor and commercial ELISA kit. The results showed that the proposed system is a promising candidate for clinical analysis of thrombin.

Abstract
The state-of-the-art on calcium orthophosphate (CaPO4)-containing biocomposites and hybrid biomaterials suitable for biomedical applications is presented. Since these types of biomaterials offer many significant and exciting possibilities for hard tissue regeneration, this subject belongs to a rapidly expanding area of biomedical research. Through the successful combinations of the desired properties of matrix materials with those of fillers (in such systems, CaPO4 might play either role), innovative bone graft biomaterials can be designed. Various types of CaPO4-based biocomposites and hybrid biomaterials those are either already in use or being investigated for biomedical applications are extensively discussed. Many different formulations in terms of the material constituents, fabrication technologies, structural and bioactive properties, as well as both in vitro and in vivo characteristics have been already proposed. Among the others, the nano-structurally controlled biocomposites, those containing nanodimensional compounds, biomimetically fabricated formulations with collagen, chitin and/or gelatin, as well as various functionally graded structures seem to be the most promising candidates for clinical applications. The specific advantages of using CaPO4-based biocomposites and hybrid biomaterials in the selected applications are highlighted. As the way from a laboratory to a hospital is a long one and the prospective biomedical candidates have to meet many different necessities, the critical issues and scientific challenges that require further research and development are also examined.

Abstract
Poly (N-isopropylacrylamide)-co-(acrylic acid) (pNIPAm-co-AAc) microgels composed of Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) have been synthesized and employed for the colorimetric sensing of H2O2. Each pNIPAm-co-AAc microgel, which exhibited a diameter of ∼800 nm, contained multiple Ag NPs (diameter of ∼5 nm), and solutions of these hybrid materials showed a UV-vis absorption band at ∼400 nm. This is due to the excitation of the Ag NP surface plasmon. We go on to show that the intensity of this absorption band is dependent on the concentration of H2O2 in solution. Specifically, in the presence of H2O2 the magnitude of the absorption peak dramatically decreases in a linear fashion over the concentration range of 0.30 to 3.00 μM H2O2 (r(2) = 0.9918). We go on to show that the response is selective for H2O2 and can still function in complex mixtures, e.g., we showed that the response is still robust in milk samples. While Ag NPs themselves can exhibit similar responses, this system has many benefits including sample processing and long term stability - i.e., Ag NPs are destabilized in solutions of a certain pH, and aggregate readily. Our microgel/Ag NP hybrids have been shown to be extremely stable and are easily purified prior to use by simple centrifugation/washing protocols. This system is simple and straightforward to use, is low cost, and can be used in complex media, which makes it practical for analyzing complex biological and environmental samples.

Abstract
As a typical biomineral, hydroxyapatite (HAp) is widely applied in bone implants and other related fields. However, the inherent nature of HAp can potentially be altered through restricting its fabrication conditions. Here, HAp fabricated by a hydrothermal treatment of pieces of natural seashell is demonstrated to have the capability of fluorescence quenching. To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first time that this new property of HAp has been reported. Consequently, we assembled a fluorescence-quenching platform based on the biomineralized HAp substrate following a hydrothermal treatment and associated with a DNA molecular beacon and applied to cancer cell detection by the transformation from “OFF state” (fluorescence quenching) to “ON state” (fluorescence recovery). Herein, we found that the outer surface of HAp material after hydrothermal biomineralization for 5 days has considerable capability for both fluorescence quenching and recovery. These results may also have implications in the further detection of various targets such as cancer cells with other special surface antigens, significant biological small molecules or disease related microRNA, just by changing the sequence of the nucleic acid beacon according to the corresponding aptamer.

Abstract
The rise of H2O2 concentration that characterizes the initiation of apoptosis can specifically oxidize Met80 in cytochrome c bound to zwitterionic phospholipids, yielding a stable peroxidase.
Cytochrome c (Cyt-c) has been previously shown to participate in cardiolipin (CL) oxidation and, therefore, in mitochondrial membrane permeabilization during the early events of apoptosis. The gain in this function has been ascribed to specific CL/Cyt-c interactions. Here we report that the cationic protein Cyt-c is also able to interact electrostatically with the main lipid components of the mitochondrial membranes, the zwitterionic lipids phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), through the mediation of phosphate anions that bind specifically to amino groups in the surfaces of protein and model membranes. In these complexes, Cyt-c reacts efficiently with H2O2 at submillimolar levels, which oxidizes the sulfur atom of the axial ligand Met80. The modified protein is stable and presents significantly enhanced peroxidatic activity. Based on these results, we postulate that the rise of H2O2 concentrations to the submillimolar levels registered during initiation of the apoptotic program may represent one signaling event that triggers the gain in peroxidatic function of the Cyt-c molecules bound to the abundant PE and PC membrane components. As the activated protein is a chemically stable species, it can potentially bind and oxidize important targets, such as CL.

Abstract
A sensor for the simple and sensitive measurement of hydrogen peroxide has been developed which is based on screen printed electrodes (SPEs) modified with Prussian blue nanoparticles (PBNPs) deposited using piezoelectric inkjet printing. PBNP-modified SPEs were characterized using physical and electrochemical techniques to optimize the PBNP layer thickness and electroanalytical conditions for optimum measurement of hydrogen peroxide. Sensor optimization resulted in a limit of detection of 2 × 10(-7) M, a linear range from 0 to 4.5 mM and a sensitivity of 762 μA ∙ mM(-1) ∙ cm(-2) which was achieved using 20 layers of printed PBNPs. Sensors also demonstrated excellent reproducibility (<5% rsd).

Abstract
Biomacromolecules and their assemblies have the unique ability for biomimetic promotion of the formation of novel and functional nanomaterials. In this work, artificial peptide nanofibers were created with a special designed peptide molecule that contains complex motif sequences and then further metallized to synthesize nanofiber-based silver nanowires. A novel hybrid nanomaterial was obtained successfully by assembling the prepared silver nanowires on graphene nanosheets, and its potential application in nonenzymatic electrochemical H2O2 sensing was explored. This fabricated sensor based on graphene and silver nanowires exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity, low detection limit, and wide linear range for the determination of H2O2.
