Utilizing the Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Particle Impact Electrochemistry: A Step toward Mediator-Free Digital Electrochemical Sensors

The current blockade particle impact method opens a route toward highly parallelized single-entity electrochemical assays. An important limitation is, however, that a redox mediator must be present in the sample, which can detrimentally interfere with molecular recognition processes. Dissolved O2 that is naturally present in aqueous solutions under ambient conditions can in principle serve as a suitable mediator via the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Here, we demonstrate the validity of this concept by performing current blockade experiments to capture and detect individual microparticles at Pt microelectrodes using solely the ORR. The readout modality is independent of the absolute O2 concentration, allowing operation under varying conditions. We further determine how the trajectories of individual microparticles are influenced by the combination of electrophoresis and electroosmotic flows and how these can be utilized to provide continuous detection of cationic particles in water for environmental monitoring.

Microfluidic platforms integrated with nano-sensors for point-of-care bioanalysis

Microfluidic technology provides a portable, cost-effective, and versatile tool for point-of-care (POC) bioanalysis because of its associated advantages such as fast analysis, low volumes of reagent consumption, and high portability. Along with microfluidics, the application of nanomaterials in biosensing has attracted lots of attention due to their unique physical and chemical properties for enhanced signal modulation such as signal amplification and signal transduction for POC bioanalysis. Hence, an enormous number of microfluidic devices integrated with nano-sensors have been developed for POC bioanalysis targeting low-resource settings. Herein, we review recent advances in POC bioanalysis on nano-sensor-based microfluidic platforms. We first briefly summarized the different types of cost-effective microfluidic platforms, followed by a concise introduction to nanomaterial-based biosensors. Then, we highlighted the application of microfluidic platforms integrated with nano-sensors for POC bioanalysis. Finally, we discussed the current limitations and perspective trends of the nano-sensor-based microfluidic platforms for POC bioanalysis.

Advances in the screening of antimicrobial compounds using electrochemical biosensors: is there room for nanomaterials?

The abusive use of antimicrobial compounds and the associated appearance of antimicrobial resistant strains are a major threat to human health. An improved antimicrobial administration involves a faster diagnosis and detection of resistances. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) are the reference techniques for this purpose, relying mainly in the use of culture techniques. The long time required for analysis and the lack of reproducibility of these techniques have fostered the development of high-throughput AST methods, including electrochemical biosensors. In this review, recent electrochemical methods used in AST have been revised, with particular attention on those used for the evaluation of new drug candidates. The role of nanomaterials in these biosensing platforms has also been questioned, inferring that it is of minor importance compared to other applications.
