Ear piercing techniques and their effect on cartilage, a histologic study

A methodological comparison of discriminant function analysis and binary logistic regression for estimating sex in forensic research and case-work

The purpose of this study is to assess the accuracy of two multivariate statistical approaches for estimating sex from human external ear anthropometry, namely, discriminant function analysis (DFA) and binary logistic regression (BLR). A cross-sectional sample of 497 participants (233 males and 264 females) aged 18-35 years (24.42 ± 5.17) was obtained from Himachal Pradesh state of North India. Both the ears of the participants (994) were examined for anthropometric measurements. A total of 12 anthropometric measurements were taken independently on the left and right ear of each individual with the help of a pair of sliding calipers using a standard method. The sex of the population groups was discriminated against using binary logistic regression and discriminant function analysis. The predictive percentage of sex estimation computed from both the models were substantially the same, that is, 76.3% from DFA and 76.2% from BLR, with nearly comparable (∼0.02) sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive values, whereas the values of correct predicted percentage were 0.1% higher in DFA than BLR. Moreover, the other comparison metrics, such as classification error, B-index, and Matthews correlation coefficient indicated that both models performed equally well. The study highlighted that if the assumptions of the statistical methods are met, both methods are equally capable of discriminating the population depending on sex. The study recommends that the discriminant function analysis and binary logistic regression may be used synonymously in forensic research and case-work pertaining to the estimation of sex and various other forensic situations.

Medicated Lacquer For Application On Adornments To Treat Affections In Aesthetic Perforations

Aesthetic perforations are often associated with health issues, such as itching, inflammation, or microbial infection. Accordingly, this work proposed a lacquer to be applied on the adornment accessory forming a film from which a proper drug is released. For this, lacquers were formulated containing three different permeation enhancers (limonene - LIM, propylene glycol - PG, and oleic acid - AO) combined according to a mixture design with a model anti-inflammatory natural drug (naringenin) and a soluble film-former polymer (polyvinyl alcohol). Formulations were characterized by physicochemical tests and in vitro and in vivo skin permeation studies. The lacquers were stable and provided a vectorized drug release. LIM, combined with one of the other permeation enhancers, showed a synergic effect, enhancing topical skin penetration in vitro by 53% while preventing permeation to the receptor medium. The in vivo evaluation of lacquers in rodent models showed these systems could provide higher levels of drug retention in the ear (166.4 ± 14.9 µg per ear for F4 and 174.9 ± 29.3 µg per ear for F5) compared to the control (109.2 ± 16.3 µg) without allowing its permeation into the bloodstream, confirming the local drug delivery. Moreover, the anti-inflammatory activity was achieved in the animal model developed for lacquer application on the earring, obtaining inhibition of ear swelling up to 40.8% ± 2.3 compared to the untreated ear. Thus, such an innovative lacquer proved a promising vehicle for treating affections caused by adornments, enhancing skin permeation while avoiding a systemic effect.

Diode Laser Ear Piercing: A Novel Technique

Earlobe piercing is a common office room procedure done by a plastic surgeon. Various methods of ear piercing have been described. In this article, we describe a novel method of laser ear piercing using the diode laser. An 18-year-old female patient underwent an ear piercing using a diode laser with a power of 2.0 W in continuous mode after topical local anaesthetic and pre-cooling. The diode laser was fast, safe, easy to use and highly effective way of ear piercing. The advantages we noticed while using the diode laser over conventional methods were more precision, minimal trauma with less chances of hypertrophy and keloids, no bleeding with coagulation effect of laser, less time taken compared to conventional method and less chance of infection due to thermal heat effect of laser.

Radiofrequency-Assisted Body Piercing

The art of body piercing is ancient; however, nowadays it has evolved into a fashion statement. In the Indian subcontinent, ear and nose piercing hold religious and cultural significance in addition to being done for aesthetic reasons. Body piercing is routinely performed by railroading technique or by piercing guns; many modifications of the technique have emerged. Irrespective of the technique used, the main complications associated are intraoperative bleeding and postoperative infection. To overcome these problems, we describe a novel and simple technique of ear and nose piercing using the radio frequency cautery.

Bacterial chondritis complications following ear piercing

BACKGROUND

Body piercing has become widespread and is associated with increased complications. Post-piercing chondritis may lead to severe residual deformity. We aimed to report case patients presenting with post-piercing chondritis in our department and to describe clinical features and treatment.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

We conducted a retrospective study of patients presenting with post-piercing chondritis in the infectious disease department of Tenon Hospital, Paris, France.

RESULTS

We included 21 patients. Fifteen bacteriological cultures were positive (7 Pseudomonas aeruginosa, 5 Staphylococcus aureus, and three other). Dual intravenous antibiotic therapy was administered to 13 patients for a median duration of six days [2-8], replaced by an oral antibiotic therapy for a median duration of 15 days [7-40]. Eight patients received oral antibiotic monotherapy for 10 days [7-30]. Median duration of antibiotic therapy was 16 days. Earring removal was performed for 18 patients. No ear deformity or general complication was reported.

CONCLUSION

Transcartilaginous ear piercing may lead to infectious complications or deformity. In case of chondritis, early administration of an antibiotic therapy active against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus is recommended. Specific guidelines are needed.

Piercing associated perichondritis of the pinna: are we treating it correctly?

Objective:

This paper reports a series of patients with sporadic pinna perichondritis who presented to a district general hospital over a period of 10 years. The data examined included the causative organism, risk factors and pattern of antibiotic use.

Method:

A retrospective analysis of diagnosed cases of pinna perichondritis from 2001 to 2012 was performed. A literature review of pinna perichondritis was carried out using Pubmed with the key words ‘pinna perichondritis’, ‘pinna abscess’, ‘pinna infection’ and ‘piercing’.

Results:

Pinna perichondritis was more likely to result from chondral than lobe piercings. The majority of cases were caused byPseudomonas aeruginosa.

Conclusion:

Most patients were not prescribed anti-pseudomonal antibiotics on presentation. This may result in persistent infection and long-term cosmetic defects.
