Abstract
Chemical investigation of the antimalarial medicinal plant Clerodendrum polycephalum led to the isolation of five new diterpenoids, including ajugarins VII-X (1-4) and teuvincenone K (5), along with four known compounds, namely, 12,16-epoxy-6,11,14,17-tetrahydroxy-17(15 → 16)-abeo-5,8,11,13,15-abietapentaen-7-one (6), methyl pheophorbide A (7), loliolide (8), and acacetin (9). The chemical structures of the new compounds were elucidated using NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, circular dichroism, as well as density functional theory calculations. All compounds were evaluated for in vitro activity against Plasmodium falciparum 3D7 malaria parasites with methyl pheophorbide A (7) showing the strongest activity (IC50 4.49 μM). Subsequent in vivo testing in a Plasmodium berghei chemosuppression model showed that compound 7 significantly attenuated peripheral blood parasitemia, leading to 79% and 87% chemosuppression following oral doses at 10 and 20 mg/kg, respectively.

Abstract
Herbal medicine is still widely practiced in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, especially by people living in villages in mountainous regions. Seven taxa belonging to the genus Teucrium (family Lamiaceae) are commonly employed in the Kurdish traditional medicine, especially to treat jaundice, stomachache and abdominal problems. We report, in this paper, a comprehensive account about the chemical structures and bioactivities of most representative specialized metabolites isolated from these plants. These findings indicate that Teucrium plants used in the folk medicine of Iraqi Kurdistan are natural sources of specialized metabolites that are potentially beneficial to human health.

Abstract
Teucrium L (Lamiaceae) is mainly distributed in the Mediterranean area. A comprehensive survey in the electronic databases (during 2000-2020 years) with keywords of 'Teucrium' and 'Germander' showed that chemical analyses are available for 27 species, with sesquiterpenoids, iridoids, di and triterpenoids, and phenolic compounds as identified structures. The neo-clerodane diterpenoids as potential chemotaxonomic markers were the main compounds of this genus. As a result, Italy and Turkey have good attempts at phytochemical analysis. The pharmacological activities of different species including antioxidant, cytotoxic activity, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and anti-insect have been summarized. Teucrium polium and Teucrium chamaedrys mainly have been used in digestive problems and diabetes in traditional medicine. Evidence-based clinical trials are needed to confirm the therapeutic properties of this genus. As well to the popularity of Asian and Anatolian species as ingredients in contemporary medicines and products, further research is required in comparison to European species.

Abstract
Background: This study was aimed to screen the antihyperlipidemic effect of different fractions of Teucrium polium to obtain the most efficient herbal fraction for isolation of bioactive constituents responsible for hypolipidemic activity. Methods: Chloroform, butanol, and aqueous fractions were obtained from hydroalcoholic extract of T. polium aerial parts using partitioning process. To induce hyperlipidemia, dexamethasone (Dex) was injected 10 mg/kg/day (s.c.) for 8 days. In the test groups, animals received 50, 100 and 150 mg/kg of T. polium hydroalcoholic extract and different fractions orally simultaneously with Dex. Serum lipid profile and hepatic marker enzymes were evaluated using biochemical kits. Results: All treatments, especially chloroform and aqueous fractions, reversed serum lipid markers in hyperlipidemic rats. Maximum reduction in triglyceride (60.2%, P < 0.001) and maximum elevation in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (35.0%, P < 0.01) was observed for chloroform fraction. Maximum cholesterol-lowering effect (29.0%, P < 0.001) and maximum reduction in low-density lipoprotein were found for hydroalcoholic extract (72.9%, P < 0.001). Aqueous fraction improved all lipid markers at the highest dose. Butanol fraction decreased triglyceride at the lowest dose (43.9%, P < 0.001) and increased HDL (33%, P < 0.05) at the highest dose. There was a significant increase in alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels in all tested groups compared to normal group (P < 0.001). Conclusions: This study showed strong antihyperlipidemic effect of various fractions derived from hydroalcoholic extract of T. polium. Chloroform and aqueous fractions may be worthy candidates for isolation of bioactive hypolipidemic constituents. However, possible hepatotoxicity should be considered for clinical application.

Abstract
Three unusual amino-phloroglucinols, named helichrytalicines A-C, along with seventeen known compounds including acetophenones, tremetrone derivatives, low-molecular weight phenols, flavonol glucosides, have been isolated from the medium-polar extract of Helichrysum italicum (Roth) G. Don, a medicinal plant typical of the Mediterranean vegetation. The structures of the compounds have been elucidated based on extensive 2D-NMR spectroscopic analyses, including COSY, TOCSY, HSQC, CIGAR-HMBC, H2BC and HSQC-TOCSY, along with Q-TOF HRMS2 analysis. Stereostructure of the new compounds has been elucidated by Mosher's method and NOESY experiment. Antimicrobial properties against Staphylococcus epidermidis of selected compounds have been evaluated.

Abstract
Abietane derivatives, bungnates A, B, 15-dehydrocyrtophyllone A and 15-dehydro-17-hydroxycyrtophyllone A, and two phenylethanoid glycosides, bunginoside A and 3″,4″-di-O-acetylmartynoside, together with nine known abietane derivatives and fourteen known phenylethanoid glycosides, were isolated from dried roots of Clerodendrum bungei. Their structures were determined on the basis of detailed spectroscopic analyses and acidic hydrolysis. The absolute configuration of bunginoside A was established from analysis of CD data. Selected compounds were evaluated for inhibitory effects against angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) and α-glucosidase. 15-Dehydrocyrtophyllone A showed an ACE inhibitory effect, and verbascoside, leucosceptoside A and isoacteoside exhibited strong inhibitory capacity against α-glucosidase.

Abstract
The chemical composition and antibacterial activity of Teucrium polium L. (Lamiaceae) were assessed; sixteen compounds were isolated from a CH2Cl2/MeOH extract of the aerial parts of the plant including four sesquiterpenes 4β,5α-epoxy-7αH-germacr-10(14)-en-6β-ol-1-one, 4β,5α-epoxy-7αH-germacr-10(14)-en,1β-hydroperoxyl,6β-ol, 4β,5β-epoxy-7αH-germacr-10(14)-en,1β-hydroperoxyl,6β-ol and 4α,5β-epoxy-7αH-germacr-10(14)-en,1β-hydroperoxyl,6α-ol, together with seven known sesquiterpenes, one known iridoid glycoside, two known flavonoids, and one known phenylpropanoid glycoside. Structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic (UV, (1)H and (13)C NMR) data, as well as two-dimensional NMR ((1)H-(1)H COSY, HMQC, NOESY and HMBC), and ESI-MS analysis. The relative stereochemistry of the ketone was established by X-ray crystallography, while its absolute configuration was attained by a modified Mosher's method. Antibacterial activity of the crude extract, as well as with four of the isolated metabolites, was observed with Staphylococcus aureus anti-biofilm activity in the low μMol range. Diverse sesquiterpene-skeleton structure and corresponding comprehensive enzyme capacity is discussed.

Abstract
Two new acylated styrylpyrones, one 5-methoxy-1(3H)-isobenzofuranone glucoside and a hydroxymethyl-orcinol derivative, along with sixteen known aromatic metabolites, including lignans, quinic acid derivatives low-molecular weight phenol glucosides, have been isolated from the methanol extract of Helichrysum italicum, a medicinal plant typical of the Mediterranean vegetation. The structures of these compounds have been elucidated on the basis of extensive 2D-NMR spectroscopic analyses, including COSY, TOCSY, HSQC, CIGAR-HMBC, H2BC and HSQC-TOCSY, along with Q-TOF HRMS(2) analysis. Selected compounds were evaluated for their anti-biofilm properties against Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Abstract
Six oleanane saponins were isolated for the first time from leaves of Bellis sylvestris Cyr., the southern daisy. Their structures were established by the extensive use of 2D-NMR experiments, including COSY, TOCSY, NOESY, HSQC, HMBC, CIGAR, H2BC, and HSQC-TOCSY, along with Q-TOF HRMS² analysis. All of the compounds are constituted by bayogenin as aglycone, and characterized by the presence of an oligosaccharide moiety, consisting of two to four sugar unities esterified at the C-28 carboxyl carbon. One of the isolated compounds is a bisdesmoside containing an additional sugar moiety at the C-3 carbon. The phytotoxic activity assayed against Aegilops geniculata Roth., a coexisting test species, has been evaluated revealing that all the compounds, at the highest concentrations, showed strong phytotoxicity against the leaf development.

Abstract
Chemical and genetic diversity of Teucrium polium L. subsp. polium from western Algeria and T. polium L. subsp. capitatum from Corsica were investigated. Diversity within and among the two populations of subspecies was assessed according to the chemical composition of their essential oils and the genetic diversity. Chemical analysis was performed using a combination of capillary GC-RI and GC/MS after fractionation using column chromatography. Genetic structures were mapped using three polymorphic genetic markers: two chloroplast markers (RPL32-TRNL and TRNL-F) and ribosomal nuclear markers (ITS region). The statistical analysis showed that both subspecies were clearly distinguished by these chemical and genetic markers. The oil chemical compositions differed qualitatively and quantitatively between the subspecies. Both collective oils were dominated by hydrocarbon compounds however the Algerian sample oils exhibited higher amounts of hydrocarbon sesquiterpenes than those of Corsica (31.2 g/100 g vs. 4.4 g/100 g) while the latter displayed higher amounts of hydrocarbon monoterpenes than the first (59.3 g/100 g vs. 34.3 g/100 g). Neighbor-joining, Maximum likelihood and Bayesian trees constructed from chloroplast markers and nuclear ITS region sequences showed the existence of two groups associated with taxonomic and chemical characteristics. The study indicated that variation in the essential oil composition within subspecies depends on genetic background. The samples of subsp. capitatum from Corsica are a homogeneous group, in contrast to samples of subsp. polium from Algeria which were clustered in two groups. Chemical and genetic diversity of Algerian populations could be explained by geographical isolation of the populations. In addition, the morphological polymorphism observed throughout the colour of flowers could be explained by environmental parameters as well as the soil pH.

Abstract
Golden germander (Teucrium polium L.) is a Mediterranean shrub of the Labiatae family, used in traditional medicine for its diuretic, antipyretic, diaphoretic, antispasmodic, tonic, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, anorexic, analgesic, antibacterial and antidiabetic effects. Like other plants of the Teucrium genus, it was widely popular because of its hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic properties but various cases of T. polium-induced hepatitis have been reported. neo-Clerodane diterpenoids, considered chemotaxonomic markers for the Teucrium genus, are believed to be responsible for the observed hepatotoxicity. The plant also produces flavonoids and phenylethanoid glycosides to which the antioxidant and cytoprotective therapeutic properties of its preparations can be traced back. In order to establish a herbal formula that preserves the plant beneficial properties, T. polium leaf drug has been subjected to a bio-guided fractionation. The different phytocomplexes obtained were analyzed by means of an extensive antioxidant screening and hepatotoxicity evaluation against HepG2, a human hepatoblastoma cell line. The cytotoxicity of the fractions was also evaluated against HeLa and A549 cell lines. In order to identify the substances responsible for the bioactivities, NMR-based metabolic profiling techniques of all the phytocomplexes were performed. Data obtained highlighted the possibility of preparing strong antioxidant extracts, useful as food additives, such as MeOH-2, and MeOH-3, completely devoid of hepatotoxic components.

Abstract
Seven neo-clerodanes (teupolins VI-XII) and eleven known compounds were isolated and characterized from leaf extracts of Teucrium polium L., a medicinal plant used in traditional and herbal medicine for its hypolipidemic, hypoglycemic, antioxidant and antiproliferative properties. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by 1D (1H, 13C and DEPT) and 2D (COSY, TOCSY, HSQC, HMBC) NMR experiments and by mass spectrometry analysis. The complete stereostructure of each compound was defined with a NOESY experiment. Because the overexploitation of herbal remedies containing T. polium extracts has resulted in several cases of hepatitis, the hepatotoxic activity of pure metabolites against the human hepatoblastoma cancer cell line HepG2 was assessed by the MTT (3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide) test. All of the compounds showed low toxicity values at the highest concentration tested (200 μM).
