ADU-Net: An Attention Dense U-Net based deep supervised DNN for automated lesion segmentation of COVID-19 from chest CT images

Accurate segmentation of COVID-19 lesions from medical images is essential for achieving precise diagnosis and developing effective treatment strategies. Unfortunately, this task presents significant challenges, owing to the complex and diverse characteristics of opaque areas, subtle differences between infected and healthy tissue, and the presence of noise in CT images. To address these difficulties, this paper designs a new deep-learning architecture (named MD-Net) based on multi-scale input layers and dense decoder aggregation network for COVID-19 lesion segmentation. In our framework, the U-shaped structure serves as the cornerstone to facilitate complex hierarchical representations essential for accurate segmentation. Then, by introducing the multi-scale input layers (MIL), the network can effectively analyze both fine-grained details and contextual information in the original image. Furthermore, we introduce an SE-Conv module in the encoder network, which can enhance the ability to identify relevant information while simultaneously suppressing the transmission of extraneous or non-lesion information. Additionally, we design a dense decoder aggregation (DDA) module to integrate feature distributions and important COVID-19 lesion information from adjacent encoder layers. Finally, we conducted a comprehensive quantitative analysis and comparison between two publicly available datasets, namely Vid-QU-EX and QaTa-COV19-v2, to assess the robustness and versatility of MD-Net in segmenting COVID-19 lesions. The experimental results show that the proposed MD-Net has superior performance compared to its competitors, and it exhibits higher scores on the Dice value, Matthews correlation coefficient (Mcc), and Jaccard index. In addition, we also conducted ablation studies on the Vid-QU-EX dataset to evaluate the contributions of each key component within the proposed architecture.

An extensive analysis of artificial intelligence and segmentation methods transforming cancer recognition in medical imaging

Recent advancements in computational intelligence, deep learning, and computer-aided detection have had a significant impact on the field of medical imaging. The task of image segmentation, which involves accurately interpreting and identifying the content of an image, has garnered much attention. The main objective of this task is to separate objects from the background, thereby simplifying and enhancing the significance of the image. However, existing methods for image segmentation have their limitations when applied to certain types of images. This survey paper aims to highlight the importance of image segmentation techniques by providing a thorough examination of their advantages and disadvantages. The accurate detection of cancer regions in medical images is crucial for ensuring effective treatment. In this study, we have also extensive analysis of Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems for cancer identification, with a focus on recent research advancements. The paper critically assesses various techniques for cancer detection and compares their effectiveness. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have attracted particular interest due to their ability to segment and classify medical images in large datasets, thanks to their capacity for self- learning and decision-making.

An adaptive data-driven architecture for mental health care applications

Background

In the current era of rapid technological innovation, our lives are becoming more closely intertwined with digital systems. Consequently, every human action generates a valuable repository of digital data. In this context, data-driven architectures are pivotal for organizing, manipulating, and presenting data to facilitate positive computing through ensemble machine learning models. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic underscored a substantial need for a flexible mental health care architecture. This architecture, inclusive of machine learning predictive models, has the potential to benefit a larger population by identifying individuals at a heightened risk of developing various mental disorders.

Objective

Therefore, this research aims to create a flexible mental health care architecture that leverages data-driven methodologies and ensemble machine learning models. The objective is to proficiently structure, process, and present data for positive computing. The adaptive data-driven architecture facilitates customized interventions for diverse mental disorders, fostering positive computing. Consequently, improved mental health care outcomes and enhanced accessibility for individuals with varied mental health conditions are anticipated.

Method

Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, the researchers conducted a systematic literature review in databases indexed in Web of Science to identify the existing strengths and limitations of software architecture relevant to our adaptive design. The systematic review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023444661). Additionally, a mapping process was employed to derive essential paradigms serving as the foundation for the research architectural design. To validate the architecture based on its features, professional experts utilized a Likert scale.

Results

Through the review, the authors identified six fundamental paradigms crucial for designing architecture. Leveraging these paradigms, the authors crafted an adaptive data-driven architecture, subsequently validated by professional experts. The validation resulted in a mean score exceeding four for each evaluated feature, confirming the architecture's effectiveness. To further assess the architecture's practical application, a prototype architecture for predicting pandemic anxiety was developed.

SVM-RLF-DNN: A DNN with reliefF and SVM for automatic identification of COVID from chest X-ray and CT images

Aim

To develop an advanced determination technology for detecting COVID-19 patterns from chest X-ray and CT-scan films with distinct applications of deep learning and machine learning methods.

Methods and Materials

The newly enhanced proposed hybrid classification network (SVM-RLF-DNN) comprises of three phases: feature extraction, selection and classification. The in-depth features are extracted from a series of 3×3 convolution, 2×2 max polling operations followed by a flattened and fully connected layer of the deep neural network (DNN). ReLU activation function and Adam optimizer are used in the model. The ReliefF is an improved feature selection algorithm of Relief that uses Manhattan distance instead of Euclidean distance. Based on the significance of the feature, the ReliefF assigns weight to each extracted feature received from a fully connected layer. The weight to each feature is the average of k closest hits and misses in each class for a neighbouring instance pair in multiclass problems. The ReliefF eliminates lower-weight features by setting the node value to zero. The higher weights of the features are kept to obtain the feature selection. At the last layer of the neural network, the multiclass Support Vector Machine (SVM) is used to classify the patterns of COVID-19, viral pneumonia and healthy cases. The three classes with three binary SVM classifiers use linear kernel function for each binary SVM following a one-versus-all approach. The hinge loss function and L2-norm regularization are selected for more stable results. The proposed method is assessed on publicly available chest X-ray and CT-scan image databases from Kaggle and GitHub. The performance of the proposed classification model has comparable training, validation, and test accuracy, as well as sensitivity, specificity, and confusion matrix for quantitative evaluation on five-fold cross-validation.

Results

Our proposed network has achieved test accuracy of 98.48% and 95.34% on 2-class X-rays and CT. More importantly, the proposed model's test accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity are 87.9%, 86.32%, and 90.25% for 3-class classification (COVID-19, Pneumonia, Normal) on chest X-rays. The proposed model provides the test accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of 95.34%, 94.12%, and 96.15% for 2-class classification (COVID-19, Non-COVID) on chest CT.

Conclusion

Our proposed classification network experimental results indicate competitiveness with existing neural networks. The proposed neural network assists clinicians in determining and surveilling the disease.
