Application of depolymerized chitosan in crop production: A review

Currently, chitosan (CHT) is well known for its uses, particularly in veterinary and agricultural fields. However, chitosan's uses suffer greatly due to its extremely solid crystalline structure, it is insoluble at pH levels above or equal to 7. This has sped up the process of derivatizing and depolymerizing it into low molecular weight chitosan (LMWCHT). As a result of its diverse physicochemical as well as biological features which include antibacterial activity, non-toxicity, and biodegradability, LMWCHT has evolved into new biomaterials with extremely complex functions. The most important physicochemical and biological property is antibacterial, which has some degree of industrialization today. CHT and LMWCHT have potential due to the antibacterial and plant resistance-inducing properties when applied in crop production. This study has highlighted the many advantages of chitosan derivatives as well as the most recent studies on low molecular weight chitosan applications in crop development.

Fabrication of poly(maleic acid)-grafted cross-linked chitosan/montmorillonite nanospheres for ultra-high adsorption of anionic acid yellow-17 and cationic brilliant green dyes in single and binary systems

In this contribution, poly(maleic acid)-grafted cross-linked chitosan/montmorillonite composite nanospheres (PMAL-CTS/MMT) were synthesized via a facile approach for adsorption of organic dyes. The adsorption capacity of PMAL-CTS/MMT towards anionic acid yellow-17 (AY17) and cationic brilliant green (BG) was compared to PMAL-CTS, CTS/MMT, and MMT to emphasize the role of surface functional groups introduced by poly(maleic acid) and montmorillonite. Interestingly, the adsorption efficiency of PMAL-CTS/MMT nanocomposite towards both dyes in the single and binary systems was extremely high due to plenty of functional groups. The affinity of PMAL-CTS/MMT towards cationic and anionic dyes resulted from the feasible modulation of the surface charges as a function of the solution pH. The PMAL-CTS/MMT nanocomposite exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 518 and 1910 mg g^-1 for AY17 and BG, respectively, which is higher than most of the adsorbents reported in recent literature studies. The proposed mechanism based on the characterization of PMAL-CTS/MMT after the adsorption highlighted that the adsorption is mainly controlled by electrostatic interaction, π - π interactions, and hydrogen bonding. More importantly, the PMAL-CTS/MMT nanocomposite was successfully applied to separate the AY17 and BG dyes from real-life aquatic environments. Collectively, the simple fabrication and superior adsorption performance reveal that PMAL-CTS/MMT has the potential to treat concomitant organic dyes effectively.

Natural, low-cost adsorbents for toxic Pb(II) ion sequestration from (waste)water: A state-of-the-art review

Pb(II) ions is an inorganic pollutant that is present in the environment. Its presence affects both human health and ecosystem. Economically, amongst many wastewater treatment approaches, adsorption is both cheap and environmentally friendly for removing Pb(II) ion from contaminated water. In this state of the art review, about 227 research and review based publications on adsorption-based studies between 1989 and 2021, which have used various materials as adsorbents of Pb (II) ions, were selected and reviewed for more evaluation. A number of adsorbents which have been reported in these literatures for the adsorption of Pb(II) ion are agrobased, modified agrobased, clay minerals, modified/nanocomposite clay minerals, silica-based, zeolite-based and chitosan-based adsorbents, respectively. The adsorption potential of the adsorbents is exhibited under optimum experimental conditions. The unmodified and modified agro based adsorbents were shown to exhibit the greatest Pb(II) adsorption capacity, with great potential for further exploration, compared to the others afore-listed. The effects of operating parameters such as pH, initial metal ion concentration, adsorbent dose and reaction time are discussed. Furthermore, in order to comprehend the nature of adsorption process between the adsorbent and contaminant (Pb(II)), thermodynamic analyses of adsorption systems are intensively described. All these discussions revealed the applicability of adsorption process for toxic Pb(II) ions removal with respect to wastewater treatment techniques. The review concludes by commenting on the various adsorbents' adsorption capacity and proposes some studies that should also be considered in future works.

Enhancing the removal of methylene blue by modified ZnO nanoparticles: kinetics and equilibrium studies

This research aims to use modified ZnO nanoparticles to enhance the removal rate of the methylene blue (MB) dye. ZnO nanoparticles are modified by coating their surface with Congo red (CR) dye, henceforth referred to as ZnO/CR. This process is used to produce a Lewis acid on the surface of ZnO to attract any Lewis base such as a MB dye (MB+). Therefore, the stability of ZnO/CR improved, and it resists the change in pH value (from 3 to 9). Several analysis techniques such as scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, FTIR, and BET method were used to characterize ZnO/CR. Nonlinear and linear regressions of pseudo first-order, pseudo second-order, and Elovich models were used to calculate the kinetic parameters of the adsorption process. The best-fit kinetic equation was investigated using three functions of error analysis: the sum of the squares of the errors, chi-square analysis, and the coefficient of determination. The intraparticle diffusion equation was used to study the diffusion process. The adsorption process of the MB followed the Langmuir model with a maximum capacity (qm) value of 43.5 mg/g. This value is six times greater than the value calculated with pure ZnO. Thermodynamic parameters ΔS•, ΔH•, and ΔG• were investigated at four temperatures (10, 20, 30, and 40 °C). The uptake process of the MB occurs spontaneously following endothermic process and an increase in the system disorder. The rate of adsorption was controlled mainly by a Lewis acid–base interaction and H bonding. Furthermore, the removal of the MB by ZnO/CR powder worked well as a chemical and physical adsorption process.

Sorption of copper onto low molecular weight chitosan derivative from aqueous solution

In this study, sorption of copper onto low molecular weight chitosan derivative was studied. Experimental parameters such as pH of the solution (A), temperature (B), dose of the sorbent (C), and concentration of solution (D) were considered. The statistical results indicated that the dose of sorbent (C) and Cu (II) concentration (D) influenced removal efficiency at 5% significance level. Also, some interactions such as ABCD, ACD, ABC and AC affected the removal process. The sorbent was characterized with FTIR, SEM and TG/DSC. Freundlich isotherm model was the best isotherm model. The kinetic study results correlated well with the pseudo-second-order model. The thermodynamic studies revealed that the nature of copper sorption was spontaneous and endothermic. Strong affinity of the sorbent for copper (II) was revealed by the Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC) technique.

Sorption of heavy metal ions onto carboxylate chitosan derivatives--a mini-review

Chitosan is of importance for the elimination of heavy metals due to their outstanding characteristics such as the presence of NH2 and -OH functional groups, non-toxicity, low cost and, large available quantities. Modifying a chitosan structure with -COOH group improves it in terms of solubility at pH ≤7 without affecting the aforementioned characteristics. Chitosan modified with a carboxylic group possess carboxyl, amino and hydroxyl multifunctional groups which are good for elimination of metal ions. The focal point of this mini-review will be on the preparation and characterization of some carboxylate chitosan derivatives as a sorbent for heavy metal sorption.

Removal of cadmium from aqueous solution using low molecular weight chitosan derivative

A 2(3) factorial design was used to examine the sorption of Cd(2+) onto cross-linked low molecular weight chitosan pyruvic acid derivative. Three factors and two levels of solution pH (A) (6.0 or 10.0), temperature (B) (45 or 70 °C) and Cd(II) concentration (C) (1 or 3 mg/L) were considered. Batch mode system was employed with 0.05 g of the sorbent and 25 mL of Cd(II) solution. The efficiency of cadmium removal during an exposition time of 4h was then evaluated. The factors and their interaction effect on the cadmium removal efficiency followed the order: Cd(II) concentration > solution pH > interaction between solution pH and Cd(II) concentration>interaction between solution pH, temperature and Cd(II) concentration. Langmuir isotherm model was the best isotherm model. The Pseudo second order fitted well the kinetic data. The thermodynamic studies revealed the nature of the cadmium sorption.

Cr(VI) Removal from Aqueous by Adsorption on Amine-Functionalized Mesoporous Silica Prepared from Silica Fume

Amino-functionalized mesoporous silica MCM-41 materials have been prepared to develop efficient adsorbents of Cr(VI) in wastewater, using silica fume as silica source. Functionalization with amino groups has been carried out by using grafting method. The materials have been characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen (N2) adsorption-desorption, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Adsorption potential of the material for Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solution was investigated by varying experimental conditions such as pH, initial metal concentration, and contact time. The equilibrium data were analyzed using the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm by linear regression analysis, and the results show that the adsorption equilibrium data obeyed the Langmuir model. In addition, the kinetics analysis revealed that the overall adsorption process was successfully fitted with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model.
