Biodegradation of starch films: the roles of molecular and crystalline structure

Influence of starch silylation on the structures and properties of starch/epoxidized soybean oil-based bioplastics

The present work systematically investigated the influence of starch silylation on the structures and properties of starch/epoxidized soybean oil-based bioplastics. Silylated starch was synthesized using starch particles (SP-ST) or gelatinized starch (SG-ST) under different silane hydrolysis pHs. Due to the appearance of -NH2 groups and lower OH wavenumbers, SP-ST obtained at pH 5 showed higher silylation degree and stronger hydrogen bond interaction with epoxidized soybean oils (ESO) than that at pH 11. The morphology analysis revealed better interfacial compatibility of ESO and SP-ST. The tensile strength of the samples containing SP-ST increased by 51.91 % than the control, emphasizing the enhanced interaction within the bioplastics. However, tensile strength of the bioplastics with SG-ST decreased by 59.56 % due to their high moisture contents from unreacted silanes. Additionally, the bioplastics with SG-ST exhibited an obvious reduction of thermal stability and an increase in water solubility because of the presence of unreacted APMS. The bioplastic degradation was not prevented by starch silylation except high pH. The bioplastics showed the most desirable tensile properties, thermal stability, and water solubility when starch was surface-modified with silanes hydrolyzed at pH 5. These outcomes made the fabricated bioplastics strong candidates for petroleum-based plastics for packaging applications.

Biodegradable starch-based packaging films incorporated with polyurethane-encapsulated essential-oil microcapsules for sustained food preservation

Novel starch-based packaging films with sustained antibacterial activity were successfully made by incorporating polyurethane-encapsulated essential-oil microcapsules (EOs@PU) as an alternative synthetic preservative for food preservation. Herein, three essential oils (EOs) were blended to make composite essential oils with a more harmonious aroma and higher antibacterial ability and encapsulated into polyurethane (PU) to form EOs@PU microcapsules based on interfacial polymerization. The morphology of the constructed EOs@PU microcapsules was regular and uniform with an average size of approximately 3 μm, thus enabling high loading capacity (59.01 %). As such, we further integrated the obtained EOs@PU microcapsules into potato starch to prepare food packaging films for sustained food preservation. Consequently, the prepared starch-based packaging films incorporated with EOs@PU microcapsules had an excellent UV blocking rate (>90 %) and low cell toxicity. Notably, the long-term release of EOs@PU microcapsules gave the packaging films a sustained antibacterial ability, prolonging the shelf life of fresh blueberries and raspberries at 25 °C (> 7 days). Furthermore, the biodegradation rate of food packaging films cultured with natural soil was 95 % after 8 days, clarifying the excellent biodegradability of the packaging films for environmental protection. As demonstrated, the biodegradable packaging films provided a natural and safe strategy for food preservation.

A bioinspired polydopamine-FeS nanocomposite with high antimicrobial efficiency via NIR-mediated Fenton reaction

Ferrous and sulfur ions are essential elements for the human body, which play an active role in maintaining the body's normal physiology. Meanwhile, mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) possesses good hydrophilicity and biocompatibility. In the present work, ferrous sulfide embedded into polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA@FeS NPs) was designed and synthesized via a simple predoping polymerization-coprecipitation strategy and the intelligent PDA matrix successfully prevented the oxidation and agglomeration of FeS nanoparticles. Importantly, there was an obvious synergistic enhancement of the photothermal effect between polydopamine and ferrous sulfide. The PDA@FeS NPs exhibited excellent photothermal antibacterial effects against both E. coli and S. aureus. The near-infrared (NIR) light-mediated release of ferrous ions could reach about 26.5% under weakly acidic conditions, further triggering the Fenton reaction to produce toxic hydroxyl radicals (·OH) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The antibacterial mechanism could be attributed to cell membrane damage and cellular content leakage with the synergistic effect of PTT and CDT. This study highlighted the germicidal efficacy of PDA@FeS NPs and provided a new strategy for designing and developing next-generation antibacterial platforms.

Charged-cellulose nanofibrils as a nutrient carrier in biodegradable polymers for enhanced efficiency fertilizers

An enhanced efficiency fertilizer (EEF) is essential for sustainable agriculture, and here, we evaluated cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) as a nutrient carrier dispersed in biodegradable polymeric matrices. CNF were functionalized with negative (CNF-) and positive (CNF+) charges to improve (i) the CNF-nutrient and (ii) the CNF-polymeric matrix interactions. The CNF encapsulated the KNO3 nutrient by spray drying (microcapsules) and then inserted into a poly (hydroxybutyrate)/starch-based matrix by melt-compounding (tablets). These materials were morphologically, structurally, and thermally characterized before and after biodegradation. Nutrient release profiles showed the microcapsules released the nutrients for up to 1 h, while the tablets did for 8 h in water and over 80 days in soil. Tablets with CNF- released NO3- faster than K+, and those with CNF+ behaved inversely. Besides, the biodegradation efficiencies were up to 75 % in 120 days. The CNF charges affected nutrient release and the matrix biodegradation, ensuring the matrices were harmless to the environment.

Synthesis of Starch-Grafted Polymethyl Methacrylate via Free Radical Polymerization Reaction and Its Application for the Uptake of Methylene Blue

In this research, a new biodegradable and eco-friendly adsorbent, starch-grafted polymethyl methacrylate (St-g-PMMA) was synthesized. The St-g-PMMA was synthesized by a free radical polymerization reaction in which methyl methacrylate (MMA) was grafted onto a starch polymer chain. The reaction was performed in water in the presence of a potassium persulfate (KPS) initiator. The structure and different properties of the St-g-PMMA was explored by FT-IR, 1H NMR, TGA, SEM and XRD. After characterization, the St-g-PMMA was used for the removal of MB dye. Different adsorption parameters, such as effect of adsorbent dose, effect of pH, effect of initial concentration of dye solution, effect of contact time and comparative adsorption study were investigated. The St-g-PMMA showed a maximum removal percentage (R%) of 97% towards MB. The other parameters, such as the isothermal and kinetic models, were fitted to the experimental data. The results showed that the Langmuir adsorption and pseudo second order kinetic models were best fitted to experimental data with a regression coefficient of R² = 0.93 and 0.99, respectively.

New Model High Temperature Pasting Analysis of Fermented Cassava Granules

Cassava is a starchy food item eaten by millions worldwide in various forms. The product has been subjected to various analysis forms, including the viscosity capacity of different flours made from the product. In this study, cassava granules (Garri) were subjected to scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and laser diffraction particle size analysis to determine microstructure, after which the viscosity behavior was ascertained under high pressure with the new model high-temperature rapid viscosity analyzer (RVA HT 4800), which is capable of reaching a maximum of 140 °C. Viscosity comparisons were then made with the profiles obtained at 95 °C and 140 °C. The microstructure had intact starch cells and was free of extraneous materials or fungal hyphae. The granule size range was found to be 1–1800 µM. It was established that the holding, final, and setback viscosities were most affected and decreased by at least 80% when the samples were subjected to the 140 °C HT profile. The peak time at 95 °C in yellow and white Garri samples of both brands averaged nine minutes, whereas it was 5 min at 140 °C profile. The white Garri samples tolerated the high temperature better based on breakdown viscosity values and may be used for making food products that require tolerance to high temperatures. An opportunity exists to re-evaluate different Garri varieties with the new model RVA to establish behavior at very high temperatures.

Biodegradation behavior and digestive properties of starch-based film for food packaging - a review

Non-degradable plastic places a serious burden on the environment, so consumers and researchers are working to develop biodegradable, safe, and sustainable food packaging materials. The starch-based film has become emerging material for food packaging. Not only does it shows excellent physicochemical properties, but also provides the desired degradation characteristics after use or the digestive properties after consumption, thus needing to comprehensively evaluate the quality of starch-based food packaging materials. This review summarizes the degradation behavior of the starch-based film in different degradation environments, and compares the suitability of degradation environments. Besides, the physicochemical properties of the composite or blend film during the degradation process were further discussed. The factors affecting the digestibility of starch-based edible film were reviewed and analyzed. Finally, the application and the future trend of the biodegradable starch-based film in the food packaging field were proposed. Future studies should combine and evaluate the physical properties and biodegradability of the composite/blend film, to develop food packaging materials with good characteristics and biodegradability.

The Use of Chitosan and Starch-Based Flocculants for Filter Backwash Water Treatment

Inorganic aluminum or iron salts supported with synthetic polymers are commonly used to eradicate colloidal particles from water in coagulation and flocculation processes. Nevertheless, these agents have several disadvantages, such as large volumes of sludge produced or environmental toxicity. Recently biodegradable polymers have been suggested as eco-friendly flocculants for water treatment. This study aimed to investigate the possibilities of using starch and chitosan and their oxidized derivatives as flocculants for filter backwash water treatment. Dialdehyde starch (DST) and dialdehyde chitosan (DCT) were synthesized by periodate oxidization of natural starch from corn and low molecular weight chitosan. The obtained materials have been characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Furthermore, we studied the flocculation properties of polysaccharide flocculants in a series of jar tests. The effectiveness of chitosan and starched-based flocculants was compared to synthetic polymers commonly used to treat iron ions-rich filter backwash water. The environmental aspects of these chemicals, particularly the biodegradability of post-flocculation residues, were also addressed. It was found that oxidized starch and chitosan derivatives can be used as ecological flocculating materials to treat potable water or sludge.

Sustainable Bioactive Packaging Based on Thermoplastic Starch and Microalgae

This study combines the use of corn starch and Tetradesmus obliquus microalgae for the production of antioxidant starch films as flexible packaging material. Starch was plasticized with glycerol and blended with 1 w% polyallylamine chosen as an agent to modify the film physical properties. The addition of polyallylamine improved film water stability and water vapor transmission rate as well as mechanical stiffness and tenacity. The dried Tetradesmus obliquus microalgae, which showed an EC₅₀ value of 2.8 mg/mg DPPH (2.2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical), was then used as antioxidant filler. The addition of microalgae provided the films with good antioxidant activity, which increased with microalgae content increasing. To our knowledge, this is the first study reporting the development of sustainable bioactive packaging films composed of almost 100% starch, and follows the European union's goals on plastics strategy concerning the promotion of bio-based, compostable plastics and the setting up of approaches to prevent food waste with a simple plastic packaging.

Comparison of the aerobic biodegradation of biopolymers and the corresponding bioplastics: A review

Biodegradable plastics made from biopolymers (made in nature) or from bio-based polymers (made in a factory) are becoming increasingly important in replacing the massive amounts of conventional, non-degradable fossil-based plastics that have been produced and disposed over the past decades. In this review we compare the biodegradation rates and mechanisms of the bioplastics thermoplastic starch, cellulose acetate and lignin based bioplastics with the biodegradation rates and mechanisms of starch, cellulose and lignin, which are the unmodified biopolymers from which these bioplastics are produced. With this comparison we aim to determine to what extent the extensive knowledge on unmodified biopolymer biodegradation can be applied to the biodegradation of bioplastics (modified biopolymers) in the terrestrial environment. This knowledge is important, since it can be of great help in giving direction to the future research and development of bioplastics and for the development of bioplastic waste assessments and policies. We found that the similarities and differences in biodegradation are dependent on the structural changes imposed on a biopolymer during the bioplastic production process. A change in higher level structure, as found in thermoplastic starch, only resulted in a limited number of differences in the biodegradation process. However, when the chemical structure of a polymer is changed, as for cellulose acetate, different microorganisms and enzymes are involved in the biodegradation. Based on the cellulose acetate biodegradation process, a conceptual model was proposed that can be used as a starting point in predicting biodegradation rates of other chemically modified biopolymers used as bioplastics. Future bioplastic biodegradation research should focus on conducting long-term field experiments, since most studies are conducted in a laboratory setting and do not capture all processes occurring in the field situation. This applies even more to lignin based bioplastics, since very little experimental data were available on modified lignin biopolymer biodegradation.

The effect of natural fillers on the marine biodegradation behaviour of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV)

Worldwide, improper disposal of plastics is instigating environmental initiatives to combat plastics accumulation of in the environment and the world’s oceans. Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) biocomposites with Miscanthus (Misc) fibres and distillers’ dried grains with solubles (DDGS) were studied to ascertain if natural fibres and proteinaceous fillers can improve polyhydroxyalkanoate marine biodegradability. Using ASTM standard D7991-15, the biodegradation of PHBV, PHBV with Misc (15 and 25 wt%) and PHBV with DDGS (15 and 25 wt%) was performed in a simulated marine environment for the first time, as indicated by a literature survey. PHBV/Misc (85/15) and (75/25) biocomposites showed 15 and 25% more biodegradation compared to PHBV, respectively. Proteinaceous PHBV/DDGS (85/15) and (75/25) biocomposites showed 17 and 40% more biodegradation compared to PHBV, respectively. Furthermore, PHBV/Misc (75/25) and PHBV/DDGS (75/25) biocomposites were marine biodegraded in 412 and 295 days, respectively. In conclusion, proteinaceous fillers (DDGS) biocomposites have better marine biodegradability than miscanthus.

Biodegradation of Wasted Bioplastics in Natural and Industrial Environments: A Review

The problems linked to plastic wastes have led to the development of biodegradable plastics. More specifically, biodegradable bioplastics are the polymers that are mineralized into carbon dioxide, methane, water, inorganic compounds, or biomass through the enzymatic action of specific microorganisms. They could, therefore, be a suitable and environmentally friendly substitute to conventional petrochemical plastics. The physico-chemical structure of the biopolymers, the environmental conditions, as well as the microbial populations to which the bioplastics are exposed to are the most influential factors to biodegradation. This process can occur in both natural and industrial environments, in aerobic and anaerobic conditions, with the latter being the least researched. The examined aerobic environments include compost, soil, and some aquatic environments, whereas the anaerobic environments include anaerobic digestion plants and a few aquatic habitats. This review investigates both the extent and the biodegradation rates under different environments and explores the state-of-the-art knowledge of the environmental and biological factors involved in biodegradation. Moreover, the review demonstrates the need for more research on the long-term fate of bioplastics under natural and industrial (engineered) environments. However, bioplastics cannot be considered a panacea when dealing with the elimination of plastic pollution.

On the Use of Starch in Emulsion Polymerizations

The substitution of petroleum-based synthetic polymers in latex formulations with sustainable and/or bio-based sources has increasingly been a focus of both academic and industrial research. Emulsion polymerization already provides a more sustainable way to produce polymers for coatings and adhesives, because it is a water-based process. It can be made even more attractive as a green alternative with the addition of starch, a renewable material that has proven to be extremely useful as a filler, stabilizer, property modifier and macromer. This work provides a critical review of attempts to modify and incorporate various types of starch in emulsion polymerizations. This review focusses on the method of initiation, grafting mechanisms, starch feeding strategies and the characterization methods. It provides a needed guide for those looking to modify starch in an emulsion polymerization to achieve a target grafting performance or to incorporate starch in latex formulations for the replacement of synthetic polymers.

Effect of seaweed on mechanical, thermal, and biodegradation properties of thermoplastic sugar palm starch/agar composites

The aim of this paper is to investigate the characteristics of thermoplastic sugar palm starch/agar (TPSA) blend containing Eucheuma cottonii seaweed waste as biofiller. The composites were prepared by melt-mixing and hot pressing at 140°C for 10min. The TPSA/seaweed composites were characterized for their mechanical, thermal and biodegradation properties. Incorporation of seaweed from 0 to 40wt.% has significantly improved the tensile, flexural, and impact properties of the TPSA/seaweed composites. Scanning electron micrograph of the tensile fracture showed homogeneous surface with formation of cleavage plane. It is also evident from TGA results that thermal stability of the composites were enhanced with addition of seaweed. After soil burial for 2 and 4 weeks, the biodegradation of the composites was enhanced with addition of seaweed. Overall, the incorporation of seaweed into TPSA enhances the properties of TPSA for short-life product application such as tray, plate, etc.

Biodegradation of bioplastics in natural environments

The extensive production of conventional plastics and their use in different commercial applications poses a significant threat to both the fossil fuels sources and the environment. Alternatives called bioplastics evolved during development of renewable resources. Utilizing renewable resources like agricultural wastes (instead of petroleum sources) and their biodegradability in different environments enabled these polymers to be more easily acceptable than the conventional plastics. The biodegradability of bioplastics is highly affected by their physical and chemical structure. On the other hand, the environment in which they are located, plays a crucial role in their biodegradation. This review highlights the recent findings attributed to the biodegradation of bioplastics in various environments, environmental conditions, degree of biodegradation, including the identified bioplastic-degrading microorganisms from different microbial communities.
