Abstract
Chitosan is widely used in the production of various hydrogels due to its non-biological toxicity, good biocompatibility, and strong biodegradability. However, chitosan-based hydrogels have not been widely used in tissue engineering due to their poor mechanical strength, poor stability and high biotoxicity of cross-linking agents. As a green technology, low temperature plasma is rich in active groups that can be involved in various chemical reactions, such as replacing the components on the chitosan chain, contributing to the cross-linking of chitosan. In this study, a plasma-assisted preparation method of chitosan-based hydrogels was developed and the properties, including mechanics, water absorption, and degradation (or stability), were characterized and analyzed. It is proved that plasma treatment plays a significant role in improving the mechanical strength and stability of hydrogels.

Abstract
The biomedical and therapeutic importance of chitosan and chitosan derivatives is the subject of interdisciplinary research. In this analysis, we intended to consolidate some of the recent discoveries regarding the potential of chitosan and its derivatives to be used for biomedical and other purposes. Why chitosan? Because chitosan is a natural biopolymer that can be obtained from one of the most abundant polysaccharides in nature, which is chitin. Compared to other biopolymers, chitosan presents some advantages, such as accessibility, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and no toxicity, expressing significant antibacterial potential. In addition, through chemical processes, a high number of chitosan derivatives can be obtained with many possibilities for use. The presence of several types of functional groups in the structure of the polymer and the fact that it has cationic properties are determinant for the increased reactive properties of chitosan. We analyzed the intrinsic properties of chitosan in relation to its source: the molecular mass, the degree of deacetylation, and polymerization. We also studied the most important extrinsic factors responsible for different properties of chitosan, such as the type of bacteria on which chitosan is active. In addition, some chitosan derivatives obtained by functionalization and some complexes formed by chitosan with various metallic ions were studied. The present research can be extended in order to analyze many other factors than those mentioned. Further in this paper were discussed the most important factors that influence the antibacterial effect of chitosan and its derivatives. The aim was to demonstrate that the bactericidal effect of chitosan depends on a number of very complex factors, their knowledge being essential to explain the role of each of them for the bactericidal activity of this biopolymer.

Chitosan Plasma Chemical Processing in Beam-Plasma Reactors as a Way of Environmentally Friendly Phytostimulants Production. Processes (Basel) 2021. Abstract
A novel technique of phytoactive water-soluble chitooligosaccharide (COS) production in low-temperature plasma is described. Design, operation, and control of plasma chemical reactors used to produce COS from the powder of high molecular weight chitosan are presented. The electron beam plasma is strongly non-equilibrium and chemically active; plasma was excited by injecting the scanning electron beam into reaction volume filled with aerosol, containing oxygen and chitosan powder. Plasma chemical processes, responsible for the raw chitosan destruction and techniques of these processes to obtain control of products of optimal molecular weight, are considered. COS, in amounts sufficient for laboratory tests with some plants, were produced. Tests showed that the addition of COS into the liquid growing medium at 0.25 and 1 mg/mL stimulates root growth in Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings (Col-0) by up to 40%, with respect to control plants. Foliar application of these COS formulations at 0.25 mg/mL on tomato plants (cv. Micro-Tom) also resulted in increases between 11.9% and 36% in two important plant productivity indicators (flower and fruit numbers) compared to the control plants. Being environmentally friendly (and resource saving) the electron beam plasma technology of renewable natural biopolymer processing can be considered as a competitive way to produce biostimulants for commercial agriculture.

Abstract
The development of novel biocompatible and biodegradable materials for medical applications has been drawing significant interest in the scientific community for years. Particularly, chitosan loaded with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) has a strong antimicrobial potential and could be applied, for example, as wound dressing material. In this work, chitosan/Ag NP composites were produced utilizing a single-step plasma-solution process, which is simple and environmentally friendly. An acetic solution of chitosan containing AgNO3 was treated by the direct current (DC) atmospheric pressure glow discharge, with the liquid serving as either cathode or anode. The plasma-solution system with liquid anode is more useful for the production of Ag NPs. Nevertheless, the NP size is comparable for both cases. The plasma treatment with both polarities led to chitosan degradation. The cleavage of glucosidic chains mostly occurred in the system with the liquid cathode, whereas the side oxidation reactions took place when the solution served as the anode. The oxidation processes were possibly induced by the hydrogen peroxide H2O2 efficiently formed in the last case. The composite materials produced with both polarities of liquid electrode demonstrated the bactericidal action against Gram-negative Escherichia coli, Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus, and Gram-positive Bacillus subtilis.

Abstract
Isotactic-polypropylene (i-PP) films with inorganic minerals such as Sillikolloid, perlite, or glass beads were prepared. The obtained polymeric films were subjected to an orientation process. Moreover, this paper includes results how the artificial accelerated weathering influences surface properties of the unoriented and oriented i-PP films with the mineral fillers. Changes in the ultraviolet (UV) treated polymeric films were studied with attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and by measuring contact angles. The results revealed that photooxidation of i-PP was more effective in the presence of the fillers and depended on the type of the filler but not on its amount. Moreover, the oriented samples experienced more effective photooxidation compared with the unoriented ones. In all studied samples the same photoproducts were detected, suggesting the same route of polymer photooxidation with and without the filler. These polymeric films were produced for potential applications in the devices in which piezoelectric effect can be used.
