Abstract
Hydrogels fabricated by non-covalent interaction garnered significant attention for their eco-friendly and robust mechanical attributes, and are often used in food, medicine and other fields. Although starch-alginate hydrogels exhibit high adhesion and are environmentally sustainable, their applications are limited due to their low elasticity and hardness. Addressing this challenge, we introduce a solvent-induced strategy using glucolactone (GDL) to fabricate hydrogels with enhanced strength and thermal resilience. Utilizing corn starch with varying amylose contents, sodium alginate and calcium carbonate to prepare a double network structure. This GDL-induced hydrogel outperforms most previous starch-based hydrogels in mechanical robustness and thermal stability. Typical starch-alginate hydrogel had a homogeneous network structure and exhibited a high tensile stress of 407.57 KPa, and a high enthalpy value of 1857.67 J/g. This investigation furnishes a facile yet effective method for the synthesis of hydrogels with superior mechanical and thermal properties, thereby broadening the design landscape for starch-based hydrogels.

Abstract
Starch and modified starch, spanning various structural levels, are comprehensively reviewed, with a special emphasis on the advancement of starch and its derivative-based delivery systems for bioactive substances. The pivotal aspect highlighted is the controlled release of active ingredients by starch-based delivery systems with distinct hierarchical structures. At the molecular level, diverse categories of starch degradation products, such as dextrin and highly branched starch, serve as versatile amphiphilic carriers for encapsulating active ingredients. At the level of helical structure, the distinctive configuration of the starch-guest complex partly determines the mechanism of controlled release for diverse active components. At the crystal and particle structural level, starch assumes the role of a carrier, effectively modulating the release of active substances, and enhances the innate physiological activity of different active components. As a natural polymer molecule, starch can also generate hydrogel materials in polymer form, expanding its utility in the fields of food, materials, and even medicine.

Abstract
In their pristine state, starch and lignin are abundant and inexpensive natural polymers frequently considered green alternatives to oil-based and synthetic polymers. Despite their availability and owing to their physicochemical properties; starch and lignin are not often utilized in their pristine forms for high-performance applications. Generally, chemical and physical modifications transform them into starch- and lignin-based materials with broadened properties and functionality. In the last decade, the combination of starch and lignin for producing reinforced materials has gained significant attention. The reinforcing of starch matrices with lignin has received primary focus because of the enhanced water sensitivity, UV protection, and mechanical and thermal resistance that lignin introduces to starch-based materials. This review paper aims to assess starch-lignin materials' production and characterization technologies, highlighting their physicochemical properties, outcomes, challenges, and opportunities. First, this paper describes the current status, sources, and chemical modifications of lignin and starch. Next, the discussion is oriented toward starch-lignin materials and their production approaches, such as blends, composites, plasticized/crosslinked films, and coupled polymers. Special attention is given to the characterization methods of starch-lignin materials, focusing on their advantages, disadvantages, and expected outcomes. Finally, the challenges, opportunities, and future perspectives in developing starch-lignin materials, such as adhesives, coatings, films, and controlled delivery systems, are discussed.

Abstract
The advancement in the use of spectroscopic techniques to investigate coffee samples is of high interest especially considering the widespread problems with coffee adulteration and counterfeiting. In this work, the use of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is investigated as a means to probe the various chemically-distinct phases existent in roasted coffee samples and to detect the occurrence of counterfeiting or adulterations in coffee blends. Routine solid-state 1H and 13C NMR spectra allowed the distinction between different coffee types (Arabica/Robusta) and the evaluation of the presence of these components in coffee blends. On the other hand, the use of more specialized solid-state NMR experiments revealed the existence of phases with different molecular mobilities (e.g., associated with lipids or carbohydrates). The results illustrate the usefulness of solid-state NMR spectroscopy to examine molecular mobilities and interactions and to aid in the quality control of coffee-related products.

Abstract
In this paper, a series of fluorescent starches were prepared simply and effectively by Hantzsch multi-component reaction (MRC). These materials showed bright fluorescence emission. Notably, due to the existence of polysaccharide skeleton, starch molecules can effectively inhibit the common aggregation induced quenching effect caused by the aggregation of conjugated molecules in traditional organic fluorescent materials. Meanwhile, the stability of this material is so excellent that the fluorescence emission of the dried starch derivatives would not destroy after boiling at a high temperature in some common solvents, and even brighter fluorescence can be stimulated in alkaline solution. In addition to fluorescence, starch was also endowed with hydrophobic property by one-pot method connecting long alkyl chains. Compared with native starch, the contact angle of fluorescent hydrophobic starch increased from 29° to 134°. Furthermore, the fluorescent starch can be prepared into film, gel and coating by different processing methods. The preparation of these Hantzsch fluorescent starch materials provide a new way for the functional modification of starch materials and has great application potential in detecting, anti-counterfeiting, security printing and other related fields.

Abstract
Starch cryogel is a potential material for oil absorption. This study provided a facile and convenient polyelectrolyte-based preparation strategy of starch cryogel, in which the structural properties of the cryogel were regulated by amylose content and pre-freezing without long-time retrogradation. Sodium laurate was used as a guest model to form starch-fatty acid salt complex (polyelectrolyte). The amount of amylose content and sodium laurate added led more polyelectrolytes, significantly increased V-type crystallinity from 3.72 % to 22.40 % and complexing index from 4.32 % to 28.48 %. As the uniform pore structure improved the oil absorption ability of starch cryogel, the starch cryogel prepared by waxy maize starch followed by quick pre-freezing showed the highest specific surface area (9.87 m2/g) and oil absorption capacity (32.94 g/g). Our findings suggest that polyelectrolyte properties have great potential in the preparation of starch-based cryogels, which could be applied in the design of novel starch-based porous materials.

Abstract
High-performance hydrogels with favorable mechanical strength, high modulus, sufficient ionic conductivity and freezing resistance have far-ranging applications in flexible electronic equipment. Nevertheless, it is challenging to combine admirable mechanical properties and high ionic conductivity into one hydrogel. Herein, a facile strategy was developed for the preparation of the hydrogel with excellent strength (1.45 MPa), super Young's modulus (8.85 MPa) and high conductivity (1.47 S/m) using starch and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as raw materials. The starch/PVA/Gly/Na3Cit (SPGN) gel was firstly cross-linked by crystalline regions of PVA upon freezing-thawing cycles. It was further immersed in the saturated Na3Cit solution to enhance the interaction between the substrates through the salting-out effect. The effect of soaking time on the crystallinity, intermolecular interactions, mechanical and electrical properties of SPGN gel was demonstrated by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, tensile and impedance testing measurements. The introduction of glycerol and Na3Cit also endowed SPGN gels with favorable anti-freezing properties. The SPGN gel could maintain high mechanical flexibility and ionic conductivity at -15 °C.

Abstract
Flexible wearable sensors based on conductive hydrogels are attracting increasing interest. To meet the urgent demands of sustainability and eco-friendliness, biopolymer-based physically crosslinked hydrogels have drawn great attention. Starch has a great potential due to its renewability, biocompatibility, nontoxicity and low cost. However, poor mechanical property, low conductivity and lack of versatility are seriously limiting the applications of starch-based hydrogels in wearable sensors. Moreover, the development of starch hydrogel-based wearable sensors in harsh conditions remains a challenge. Herein, multifunctional and physical crosslinking hydrogels were developed by introducing ionic liquid (1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium acetate) and metal salt (AlCl3) into starch/polyvinyl alcohol double-network structure. The hydrogel exhibited excellent stretchability (567%), tensile strength (0.53 MPa), high conductivity (2.75 S·m-1), good anti-freezing, antibacterial and anti-swelling properties. A wearable sensor assembled from the starch-based hydrogel exhibited a wide working range, high sensitivity (gauge factor: 5.93) and excellent reversibility. Due to the versatility, the sensor effectively detected human motion in normal and underwater environment, and possessed a sensitive pressure and thermal response. Overall, the present work provided a promising route to develop multifunctional and "green" biopolymer-based hydrogels for wearable sensors in human health and sporting applications.

Abstract
Starch synthase III plays a key role in starch biosynthesis and is highly expressed in developing wheat grains. To understand the contribution of SSIII to starch and grain properties, we developed wheat ssIIIa mutants in the elite cultivar Cadenza using in silico TILLING in a mutagenized population. SSIIIa protein was undetectable by immunoblot analysis in triple ssIIIa mutants carrying mutations in each homoeologous copy of ssIIIa (A, B and D). Loss of SSIIIa in triple mutants led to significant changes in starch phenotype including smaller A-type granules and altered granule morphology. Starch chain-length distributions of double and triple mutants indicated greater levels of amylose than sibling controls (33.8% of starch in triple mutants, and 29.3% in double mutants vs. 25.5% in sibling controls) and fewer long amylopectin chains. Wholemeal flour of triple mutants had more resistant starch (6.0% vs. 2.9% in sibling controls) and greater levels of non-starch polysaccharides; the grains appeared shrunken and weighed ~ 11% less than the sibling control which was partially explained by loss in starch content. Interestingly, our study revealed gene dosage effects which could be useful for fine-tuning starch properties in wheat breeding applications while minimizing impact on grain weight and quality.

Abstract
Matricaria chamomilla L. extract is well-known for its therapeutic properties; thus, it shows potential to be used to modify materials designed for biomedical purposes. In this paper, acrylic hydrogels modified with this extract were prepared. The other modifier was starch introduced into the hydrogel matrix in two forms: room-temperature solution and elevated-temperature solution. Such hydrogels were synthesized via UV radiation, while two types of photoinitiator were used: 2-hydroxy-2-methylpropiophenone or phenylbis(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl) phosphine oxide. The main task of performed research was to verify the impact of particular modifiers and photoinitiator on physicochemical properties of hydrogels. Studies involved determining their swelling ability, elasticity, chemical structure via FTIR spectroscopy and surface morphology via the SEM technique. Incubation of hydrogels in simulated physiological liquids, studies on the release of chamomile extract from their matrix and their biological analysis via MTT assay were also performed. It was demonstrated that all investigated variables affected the physicochemical properties of hydrogels. The modification of hydrogels with chamomile extract reduced their absorbency, decreased their thermal stability and increased the cell viability incubated with this material by 15%. Next, hydrogels obtained by using phenylbis(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl) phosphine oxide as a photoinitiator showed lower absorbency, more compact structure, better stability in SBF and a more effective release of chamomile extract compared to the materials prepared by using 2-hydroxy-2-methylpropiophenone. It was proved that, by applying adequate reagents, including both photoinitiator and modifiers, it is possible to obtain hydrogels with variable properties that will positively affect their application potential.

Abstract
Bilayer hydrogels are attracting tremendous attention for their capability to integrate several different functions on the two sides of the gel, that is, imparting the gel with Janus characteristics, which is highly desired in many engineering and biomedical applications including soft actuators, hydrogel patches, and wearable electronics. However, the preparation process of the bilayer materials usually involves several complicated steps and is time-consuming, while the interfacial bonding is another main concern. Here, a simple and versatile method is proposed to obtain bilayer hydrogels within just one step based on the method of introducing viscosity contrast of the precursors for different layers. The bilayer structure can be well maintained during the whole preparation process with a constrained interfacial molecular exchange to ensure the strong bonding strength. The key requirements for forming distinct bilayer structures in situ are studied and discussed in detail. Bilayer hydrogels with different chemical designs are prepared via this strategy to tailor the good distribution of desired functions for soft actuators, wound healing patches, and wearable electronics. We believe that the strategy illustrated here will provide new insights into the preparation and application of bilayer materials.

Abstract
A polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel loaded with guava leaf extract (GLE) has potential applications as a wound dressing with good antibacterial activity. This study succeeded in fabricating a PVA hydrogel containing GLE using the freeze–thaw (FT) method. By varying the GLE concentration, we can adjust the physical properties of the hydrogel. The addition of GLE results in a decrease in cross-linking during gelation and an increase in the pore size of the hydrogels. The increase of the pore size made the swelling increase and the mechanical strength decrease. The weight loss of the hydrogel also increases because the phosphate buffer saline (PBS) dissolves the GLE. Increasing the GLE concentration caused the Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) absorbance peaks to widen due to hydrogen bonds formed during the FT process. The crystalline phase was transformed into an amorphous phase in the PVA/GLE hydrogel based on the X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) characterization showed a significant decrease in the hydrogel weight over temperatures of 30–150 °C due to the evaporation of water from the hydrogel matrix. The zone of inhibition of the PVA/GLE hydrogel increased with antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus of 17.93% per gram and 15.79% per gram against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. A polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel loaded with guava leaf extract (GLE) has potential applications as a wound dressing with good antibacterial activity.![]()

Abstract
All kinds of soil conditioners have been used to improve soil quality. The application of many traditional soil conditioners was limited by single performance. In this study, a novel multifunctional microspheric soil conditioner was prepared based on Arabic gum, gelatin, chitosan and β-cyclodextrin. Arabic gum and gelatin (AG-GL) microspheric carriers, which could load ferrous sulfate (FS), were synthesized via complex coagulation method. The AG-GL(FS) microspheres were covered by chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (CQAS) through single coagulation method. And β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was used as the outermost shell to improve chemical stability of the soil conditioner by saturated solution method. Finally, the novel multifunctional microspheric soil conditioner AG-GL/CQAS/β-CD-FS was obtained and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analyzer, polarizing microscope, scanning electron microscope and particle size analyzer. The novel soil conditioner shows good nutrient slowly-releasing, water retention, heavy metal ions adsorption and antibacterial performances with the particle size of 14-17 μm and high thermal decomposition temperature, which has the potential application in improving soil quality.
