Consolidation of cellulose nanofibrils with lignosulphonate bio-waste into excellent flame retardant and UV blocking membranes

Photothermal controlled-release microcapsule pesticide delivery systems constructed with sodium lignosulfonate and transition metal ions: construction, efficacy and on-demand pesticide delivery

BACKGROUND

Widespread application of controlled-release pesticide delivery systems is a feasible and effective method to improve the utilization efficiency of pesticides. However, owing to the high cost and complicated preparation technologies of controlled-release pesticide delivery systems, their applications in agricultural production have been seriously hindered.

RESULTS

This study aimed to construct inexpensive photothermally controlled-release pesticide delivery systems using chitosan (CS) and sodium lignosulfonate (LS) as the wall materials, and a coordination assembly strategy of LS with transition metal ions to encapsulate a model pesticide, avermectin (AVM). The resulting complex or nanoparticle photothermal layers in these systems effectively achieved photothermal conversions, and replaced the use of common photothermal agents. In the prepared pesticide-delivery systems, two systems had remarkable photothermal conversion performance and photothermal stabilities with a photothermal conversion efficiency (η) of 24.03% and 28.82%, respectively, under 808 nm, 2 W near-infrared irradiation. The slow-release and ultraviolet-shielding performance of these two systems were markedly enhanced compared with other formulations. The insecticidal activities of these two systems against Plutella xylostella under irradiation with light-emitting diode (LED)-simulated sunlight were also enhanced by 5.20- and 5.06-fold, respectively, compared with that without irradiation of LED-simulated sunlight.

CONCLUSION

Because of their convenient preparations, inexpensive and renewable raw materials, and excellent photothermally controlled-release performance, these on-demand pesticide delivery systems might have significant potential in improving the utilization efficiency of pesticides in modern agriculture. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Pullulan-based films impregnated with silver nanoparticles from the Fusarium culmorum strain JTW1 for potential applications in the food industry and medicine

Introduction: Biopolymers, such as pullulan, a natural exopolysaccharide from Aureobasidium pullulans, and their nanocomposites are commonly used in the food, pharmaceutical, and medical industries due to their unique physical and chemical properties. Methods: Pullulan was synthesized by the A. pullulans ATCC 201253 strain. Nanocomposite films based on biosynthesized pullulan were prepared and loaded with different concentrations of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized by the Fusarium culmorum strain JTW1. AgNPs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Zeta potential measurements, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. In turn, the produced films were subjected to physico-chemical analyses such as goniometry, UV shielding capacity, attenuated total reflection-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and their mechanical and degradation properties were assessed. The antibacterial assays of the nanoparticles and the nanocomposite films against both food-borne and reference pathogens, including Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella infantis, Salmonella enterica, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumoniae, were performed using standard methods. Results: AgNPs were small (mean 15.1 nm), spherical, and displayed good stability, being coated with protein biomolecules. When used in higher concentrations as an additive to pullulan films, they resulted in reduced hydrophilicity and light transmission for both UV-B and UV-A lights. Moreover, the produced films exhibited a smooth surface. Therefore, it can be concluded that the addition of biogenic AgNPs did not change the morphology and texture of the films compared to the control film. The nanoparticles and nanocomposite films demonstrated remarkable antibacterial activity against both food-borne and reference bacteria. The highest activity of the prepared films was observed against L. monocytogenes. Discussion: The obtained results suggest that the novel nanocomposite films prepared from biosynthesized pullulan and AgNPs can be considered for use in the development of medical products and food packaging. Moreover, this is the first report on pullulan-based nanocomposites with mycogenic AgNPs for such applications.

Synthesis of Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose/Poly(acrylic acid) Microgels via Visible-Light-Triggered Polymerization as a Self-Sedimentary Cationic Basic Dye Adsorbent

In this study, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose/poly(acrylic acid) (CMC/PAA) microgels were successfully synthesized via visible-light-triggered free-radical polymerization to remove methylene blue (MB) from water. The microgels had a loose and porous 3-D network structure, exhibiting excellent adsorption performance. The equilibrium adsorption capacity and the removal efficiency of the microgels reached approximately 1479 mg/g and 97%, respectively, when the initial concentration of MB was 300 mg/L. The adsorption kinetics was well described by the pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption isotherms followed the Langmuir isothermal model. Notably, CMC/PAA microgels could naturally settle and be separated from the MB solution. Furthermore, the recovery efficiency of the regenerated CMC/PAA microgels reached approximately 94% after five adsorption-desorption cycles. Therefore, the microgels could be used as promising adsorbents due to the advantages of high adsorption capacity, fast removal rate, and reusability.

Lignin-Cellulose Nanocrystals from Hemp Hurd as Light-Coloured Ultraviolet (UV) Functional Filler for Enhanced Performance of Polyvinyl Alcohol Nanocomposite Films

Lignin is a natural light-coloured ultraviolet (UV) absorber; however, conventional extraction processes usually darken its colour and could be detrimental to its UV-shielding ability. In this study, a sustainable way of fabricating lignin-cellulose nanocrystals (L-CNCs) from hemp hurd is proposed. A homogeneous morphology of the hemp particles was achieved by ball milling, and L-CNCs with high aspect ratio were obtained through mild acid hydrolysis on the ball-milled particles. The L-CNCs were used as filler in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film, which produced a light-coloured nanocomposite film with high UV-shielding ability and enhanced tensile properties: the absorption of UV at wavelength of 400 nm and transparency in the visible-light region at wavelength of 550 nm was 116 times and 70% higher than that of pure PVA, respectively. In addition to these advantages, the nanocomposite film showed a water vapour transmission property comparable with commercial food package film, indicating potential applications.

Sustainable and Superhydrophobic Lignocellulose-Based Transparent Films with Efficient Light Management and Self-Cleaning

Light-management (LM) films that can regulate transmitted light are significant to diverse fields, such as optoelectronics and energy-efficient buildings. However, for conventional LM films made from petroleum-based polymers, the nonbiodegradability and complicated fabrication process remain a challenge. Herein, we prepare sustainable lignocellulose-based films with excellent light-management capability by facile dissolution and regeneration of wood pulp and the corncob residue from xylitol production (CRXP). The obtained films exhibit high transparency (78%), high haze (61%), and especially remarkable UV-blocking performance (99.94% for UVB and 98.04% for UVA). They achieve consistent indoor light distribution and UV radiation shielding by light management for the application of smart buildings. Furthermore, by spray-coating with SiO₂ nanoparticles to construct hierarchical networks, the films are endowed with a superhydrophobic surface with a self-cleaning function to mitigate dust accumulation. Our work provides novel insights into the conversion of lignocellulosic waste to desirable and sustainable functional materials.
