Abstract
BackgroundThis study aims to investigate the association of monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and long-term mortality.MethodsData from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999 to 2004 were analyzed, with mortality follow-up tracked via the National Death Index until December 31, 2019. Logistic regression was used to examine the relationship between MHR and PAD, while Cox proportional hazards regression assessed the association of MHR with mortality in individuals with PAD.ResultsA total of 6319 participants were included, among whom 550 were identified as having PAD. In weighted multivariate logistic regression analysis, participants in the third (odds ratio [OR]: 1.031, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.009-1.053, p = 0.007) and fourth (OR: 1.034, 95% CI: 1.011-1.057, p = 0.006) quartiles of MHR demonstrated significantly higher risks of PAD compared to those in the first quartile. Among PAD individuals, during a median follow-up period of 136 (71, 197) months, 422 deaths occurred. Higher MHR was associated with an increased risk of long-term mortality in females (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.695, 95% CI: 1.222-2.350, p = 0.002) but not in males (HR: 0.761, 95% CI: 0.554-1.044 p = 0.090).ConclusionsElevated MHR is independently associated with PAD among U.S. population. The association between MHR and long-term prognosis of PAD exhibits gender differences, with a significant relationship observed between elevated MHR and long-term mortality risk in females, but not in males.

Abstract
Background Lower extremity peripheral arterial disease (LEPAD) significantly affects quality of life and is associated with severe cardiovascular risks. Studies on its long-term incidence trends are limited. Objective This study aims to analyze global trends in LEPAD incidence from 1990 to 2021 using the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 database and to forecast future trends between 2022 and 2030, providing insights for healthcare planning and resource allocation. Methods Data were extracted from the GBD 2021 database by genders, age groups, continents, and sociodemographic index (SDI) levels. Using Joinpoint regression analysis, annual percentage changes (APC) and average annual percentage changes (AAPC) were calculated to assess age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR) historical trends. Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model was applied to predict ASIR between 2022 and 2030. Results The global ASIR of LEPAD showed a slight decrease from 1990 to 2021, though regional differences were notable. In 2021, the highest ASIR was in the Americas, while Africa had the lowest. Gender and age disparities were significant, and females and older populations were at higher risk. ARIMA predictions indicate a stable ASIR trend from 2025 onward. Conclusion This study provides a comprehensive analysis of LEPAD incidence trends and a forecast through 2030. While global incidence may stabilize, the rising burden in lower-income countries calls for prioritizing early intervention and health education in high-risk regions. These findings emphasize the importance of targeted resource allocation and strategic prevention efforts.

Abstract
Below-the-knee (infrapopliteal) atherosclerotic disease, which presents as chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) in nearly 50% of patients, represents a treatment challenge when it comes to the endovascular intervention arm of management. Due to reduced tissue perfusion, patients usually experience pain at rest and atrophic changes correlated to the extent of the compromised perfusion. Unfortunately, the prognosis remains unsatisfactory with 30% of patients requiring major amputation and a mortality rate of 25% within 1 year. To date, randomized multicentre trials of endovascular intervention have shown that drug-eluting stents (DES) increase patency rate and lower target lesion revascularization rate compared to plain balloon angioplasty and bare-metal stents. The majority of these trials recruited patients with focal infrapopliteal lesions, while most patients requiring endovascular intervention have complex and diffuse atherosclerotic disease. Moreover, due to the nature of the infrapopliteal arteries, the use of long DES is limited. Following recent results of drug-coated balloons (DCBs) in the treatment of femoropopliteal and coronary arteries, it was hoped that similar effective results would be achieved in the infrapopliteal arteries. In reality, multicentre trials have failed to support the proposed hypothesis and no advantage was found in using DCBs in comparison to plain balloon angioplasty. This review aims to explore anatomical, physiological and pathological differences between lesions of the infrapopliteal and coronary arteries to explain the differences in outcome when using DCBs.

Abstract
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a common circulatory disorder characterized by the accumulation of fats, cholesterol, and other substances in the arteries that restrict blood flow to the extremities, especially the legs. The ankle brachial index (ABI) is a highly reliable and valid non-invasive test for diagnosing PAD. However, the traditional method has limitations. These include the time required, the need for Doppler equipment, the training of clinical staff, and patient discomfort. PWV refers to the speed at which an arterial pressure wave propagates along the arteries, and this speed is conditioned by arterial elasticity and stiffness. To address these limitations, we have developed a system that uses electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmography (PPG) signals to calculate pulse wave velocity (PWV). We propose determining the ABI based on this calculation. Validation was performed on 22 diabetic patients, and the results demonstrate the accuracy of the system, maintaining a margin of ±0.1 compared with the traditional method. This confirms the correlation between PWV and ABI and positions this technique as a promising alternative to overcome some of the limitations of the conventional method.

Abstract
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is an atherosclerotic disease associated with significant functional impairment, morbidity, and mortality. Among women, PAD remains poorly recognized and undermanaged. Compared with men, women with PAD tend to be underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed, have poorer quality of life, and experience higher rates of PAD-related morbidity and cardiovascular mortality. In this review, we describe the sex- and gender-related differences in the epidemiology, presentation, diagnosis, and management of PAD. We provide specific recommendations to overcome these factors, including greater awareness and an increased emphasis on tailored and more aggressive interventions for women with PAD. Such changes are warranted and necessary to achieve more equitable outcomes in women with PAD, including improved limb outcomes, enhanced lifestyle, and cardiovascular risk reduction.

Abstract
According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death among women worldwide, yet its magnitude is often underestimated. Biological and gender differences affect health, diagnosis, and healthcare in numerous ways. The lack of sex and gender awareness in health research and healthcare is an ongoing issue that affects not only research but also treatment and outcomes. The importance of recognizing the impacts of both sex and gender on health and of knowing the differences between the two in healthcare is beginning to gain ground. There is more appreciation of the roles that biological differences (sex) and sociocultural power structures (gender) have, and both sex and gender affect health behavior, the development of diseases, their diagnosis, management, and the long-term effects of an illness. An important issue is the knowledge and awareness of women about vascular diseases. The risk of cardiovascular events is drastically underestimated by women themselves, as well as by those around them. The purpose of this review is to draw attention to improving the medical care and treatment of women with vascular diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is a new, simple, and inexpensive marker of insulin resistance that is becoming increasingly important as a promising predictor of diseases such as atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is the main cause of lower extremity arterial disease (LEAD). In this study, we investigated the relationship between TyG index values and LEAD risk in patients with diabetes. METHODS Patients with diabetes hospitalized at the Endocrinology Department of our hospital from June 1, 2021, to May 31, 2022, were retrospectively included. Baseline data, biochemical indicators, and ankle-brachial index values were collected. Statistical methods were used to assess the relationship between TyG index values and the risk of LEAD. RESULTS A total of 1,040 hospitalized patients with diabetes were included, they were divided into the LEAD group with 168 patients and the no LEAD group with 872 patients. TyG index values in the LEAD group were higher than those in the no LEAD group (9.94 ± 0.78 vs. 9.36 ± 0.70, P < 0.001). TyG index values were independently correlated with LEAD risk in patients with diabetes (odds ratio = 3.92, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.92-5.26, P < 0.001) in multivariate logistic regression analysis after adjusting for different risk factors (all P < 0.05). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.72 (95% CI: 0.68-0.76) when TyG index values were used to diagnose LEAD in patients with diabetes. When Youden's index reached the maximum value of 0.34, the optimal TyG index threshold for predicting the onset of diabetic LEAD was 9.56, sensitivity was 71.1%, and specificity was 63.0%. CONCLUSIONS Increases in TyG index values were associated with the risk of LEAD in patients with diabetes and, thus, may be used as a predictor of LEAD in this patient population, especially in primary care institutions with relatively few resources.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Miyasato et al. show that peak oxygen consumption, walking economy, anaerobic threshold, and cardiovascular responses (heart rate, blood pressure, and rate pressure product) during walking were similar between men and women with peripheral artery disease and intermittent claudication. There were no differences in the physiological responses to walking between men and women with intermittent claudication. Sex per se is not a factor that demands changes in walking prescription for patients with intermittent claudication. OBJECTIVE Peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak), anaerobic threshold, walking economy, and cardiovascular responses during walking are used to guide and monitor walking training in patients with peripheral artery disease and intermittent claudication. Women with peripheral artery disease and intermittent claudication present greater impairments than men, and evaluating training markers according to sex for decisions regarding walking prescription in this population is important. This study aimed to compare VO2peak, walking economy, anaerobic threshold, and cardiovascular responses during walking in men and women with peripheral artery disease and intermittent claudication. METHODS Forty patients (20 men and 20 women with similar baseline characteristics) underwent a cardiopulmonary treadmill test (3.2km/h and 2% increase in slope every 2 minutes until maximal leg pain). The VO2 and rate-pressure product were assessed. Data from men and women were compared using t-tests. RESULTS There were no significant differences between men and women (VO2peak: 15.0±4.8 versus 13.9±2.9mL∙kg-1∙min-1, p=0.38; walking economy: 9.6±2.7 versus 8.4±1.6mL∙kg-1∙min-1, p=0.09; anaerobic threshold: 10.5±3.2 versus 10.5±2.2mL∙kg-1∙min-1, p=0.98; rate pressure product at 1st stage: 13,465± 2,910 versus 14,445±4,379bpm∙mmHg, p=0.41; and rate pressure product at anaerobic threshold:13,673±3,100 versus 16,390±5,870bpm∙mmHg, p=0.08 and rate pressure product at peak exercise: 21,253±6,141 versus 21,923±7,414bpm∙mmHg, p=0.76, respectively). CONCLUSION Men and women with peripheral artery disease and similar baseline characteristics presented similar responses to walking, suggesting that decisions regarding walking prescription and monitoring can be made regardless of sex in this specific population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This systematic review and meta-analysis sought to describe the prognostic implications of sex on the clinical outcomes of patients undergoing interventions for chronic limb threatening ischemia (CLTI). METHODS Studies were systematically searched across 7 databases from inception to August 25, 2021 and rerun on October 11, 2022. Studies focusing on patients with CLTI undergoing open surgery, endovascular treatment (EVT), or hybrid procedures were included if sex-based differences were associated with a clinical outcome. Two independent reviewers screened studies for inclusion, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Primary outcomes included inpatient mortality, major adverse limb events (MALE), and amputation-free survival (AFS). Meta-analyses were performed using random effects models and reported pooled odds ratio (pOR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS A total of 57 studies were included in the analysis. A meta-analysis of 6 studies demonstrated that female sex was associated with statistically higher inpatient mortality compared to male sex undergoing open surgery or EVT (pOR, 1.17; 95% CI: 1.11-1.23). Female sex also demonstrated a trend toward increased limb loss in those undergoing EVT (pOR, 1.15; 95% CI: 0.91-1.45) and open surgery (pOR 1.46; 95% CI: 0.84-2.55). Female sex also had a trend toward higher MALE (pOR, 1.06; 95% CI, 0.92-1.21) in 6 studies. Finally, female sex had a trend toward worse AFS (pOR, 0.85; 95% CI, 0.70-1.03) in 8 studies. CONCLUSIONS Female sex was significantly associated with higher inpatient mortality and a trend toward higher MALE following revascularization. Female sex trended toward worse AFS. The reasons for these disparities are likely multifaceted on patient, provider, and systemic levels and should be explored to identify solutions for decreasing these health inequities across this vulnerable patient population.

Abstract
While being a relatively prevalent condition particularly among aging patients, peripheral arterial disease (PAD) of lower extremities commonly goes undetected or misdiagnosed due to its symptoms being nonspecific. Additionally, progression of PAD in the absence of timely intervention can lead to dire consequences. Therefore, development of non-invasive and affordable diagnostic approaches can be highly beneficial in detection and treatment planning for PAD patients. In this study, we present a contrast-free ultrasound-based quantitative blood flow imaging technique for PAD diagnosis. The method involves monitoring the variations of blood flow in the calf muscle in response to thigh-pressure-cuff-induced occlusion. Four quantitative metrics are introduced for analysis of these variations. These metrics include post-occlusion to baseline flow intensity variation (PBFIV), total response region (TRR), Lag0 response region (L0RR), and Lag4 (and more) response region (L4 + RR). We examine the feasibility of this method through an in vivo study consisting of 14 PAD patients with abnormal ankle-brachial index (ABI) and 8 healthy volunteers. Ultrasound data acquired from 13 legs in the patient group and 13 legs in the healthy group are analyzed. Out of the four utilized metrics, three exhibited significantly different distributions between the two groups (p-value < 0.05). More specifically, p-values of 0.0015 for PBFIV, 0.0183 for TRR, and 0.0048 for L0RR were obtained. The results of this feasibility study indicate the diagnostic potential of the proposed method for the detection of PAD.

Abstract
Thanks to the advent of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (PLWH) experienced a marked increase in life expectancy but are now at higher risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD), the current leading cause of death in PLWH on cART. Although HIV preponderantly affects men over women, manifestations of HIV-related CVD differ by sex with women experiencing greater risks than men. Despite extensive investigation, the etiopathology of CVD, notably the respective contribution of viral infection and cART, remain ill-defined. However, both viral infection and cART have been reported to contribute to endothelial dysfunction, the precursor and major cause of atherosclerosis-associated CVD, through mechanisms involving endothelial cell activation, inflammation, and oxidative stress, all leading to reduced nitric oxide bioavailability. Therefore, preserving endothelial function in PLWH on cART should be a main target to reduce CVD morbidity and mortality, notably in females.

Abstract
The consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF) has been associated with cardiometabolic risk factors. However, there is scarce literature on the association between UPF consumption, cardiovascular events, and cardiometabolic risk factors in subjects undergoing secondary care for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Thus, we aimed to evaluate the association between UPF consumption, CVD, and cardiometabolic risk factors in subjects with established CVD. Baseline data from 2,357 subjects participating in a Brazilian multicenter study were analysed finding a mean UPF consumption of 18.7% of their energy intake. Higher figures of UPF consumption were founded associated with an increased presence of high waist circumference, overweight, peripheral arterial disease, and with a decreased odds of the simultaneous presence of coronary arterial disease, peripheral arterial diseases, and stroke when comparing among tertiles of UPF contribution to energy intake. These associations were observed when analyzing the whole sample and women but not men. Thus, these findings should help improve strategies for CVD patients in secondary care.

Abstract
Background Arterial diseases represent a severe public health problem in the 21st century. Although men have a higher overall prevalence, reports have suggested that women may exhibit atypical manifestations, be asymptomatic, and have hormonal peculiarities, resulting in worse outcomes and severe emergencies, such as acute limb ischemia (ALI). Objectives To analyze the morbidity and mortality profile of ALI emergencies in Brazil between 2008 and 2019. Methods An ecological study was carried out with secondary data from SIH/SUS, using ICD-10 code I.74 The proportions of emergency hospital admissions and in-hospital mortality rates (HMR) by gender, ethnicity, and age were extracted from the overall figures. P<0.05 was considered significant. Results From 2008 to 2019, there were 195,567 urgent hospitalizations due to ALI in Brazil, 111,145 (56.8%) of which were of men. Women had a higher HMR (112:1,000 hospitalizations) than men (85:1,000 hospitalizations) (p<0.05), and a higher chance of death (OR=1.36; p<0.05). Furthermore, mean survival was significantly higher among men (8,483/year versus 6,254/year; p<0.05). Stratified by ethnicity, women who self-identified as white (OR=1.44; p<0.05), black (OR=1.33; p<0.05), and brown (RR=1.25; p <0.05) had greater chances of death than men in the same ethnicity categories. Moreover, women over the age of 50 years had a higher chance of death, with a progressive increment in risk as age increased. Conclusions There was a trend to worse prognosis in ALI emergencies associated with women, especially in older groups. The literature shows that the reasons for these differences are still poorly investigated and more robust studies of this relevant disease in the area of vascular surgery are encouraged.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Ankle brachial index (ABI) is a simple and cheap parameter to assess the presence of atherosclerosis. It could also help correctly reclassify the cardiovascular risk when added to the Framingham risk score (FRS). Recent evidence has demonstrated improvement in prediction performance of ABI when added to FRS, particularly in women. However, no studies have been published yet evaluating the cost-effectiveness of this approach. This study attempts to fill in this gap by assessing the cost-effectiveness of ABI measurements in primary prevention in women. METHODS We developed a Markov model to compare two different strategies for assessing the cardiovascular risk (low, intermediate and high) among women in the general population: 1) FRS strategy, and 2) FRS + ABI strategy; and the relative impact associated with interventions for preventing CV events in intermediate and high-risk categories. RESULTS In the base-case analysis, FRS + ABI reported an additional cost of € 110 and a gain of 0.0039 QALYs per patient, resulting in an ICER of € 27.986/QALY, when compared to FRS alone. The ICER improved to €1.641/QALY when using a lifetime horizon. The effectiveness of preventive CV disease interventions reported also a significant impact. A 32% reduction of CV events was the minimum value estimated to maintain FRS + ABI as a cost-effective strategy. CONCLUSIONS The addition of ABI to FRS is a cost-effective approach in women classified at low and intermediate risk with FRS only. This new approach gives the possibility to reclassify and allocate them into the appropriate risk group and treatment.

Abstract
Aims/hypothesis Previous meta-analyses have suggested that diabetes confers a greater excess risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, vascular dementia, and heart failure in women compared to men. While the underlying mechanism that explains such greater excess risk is unknown, in the current meta-analysis we hypothesized that we would find a similar sex difference in the relationship between diabetes and peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Methods PubMed MEDLINE, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and Embase were systematically searched for prospective population-based cohort studies, with no restriction on publication date, language, or country. We included studies that reported the relative risk (RR), and its variability, for incident PAD associated with diabetes in both sexes. We excluded studies that did not adjust at least for age, and in which participants had pre-existing PAD. In cases where sex-specific results were not reported, study authors were contacted. Random-effects meta-analyses with inverse variance weighting were used to obtain summary sex-specific RRs and the women: men ratio of RRs for PAD. The Newcastle–Ottawa scale was used to assess study quality. Results Data from seven cohorts, totalling 2071,260 participants (49.8% women), were included. The relative risk for incident PAD associated with diabetes compared with no diabetes was 1.96 (95% CI 1.29–2.63) in women and 1.84 (95% CI 1.29–2.86) in men, after adjusting for potential confounders. The multiple-adjusted RR ratio was 1.05 (95% CI 0.90–1.22), with virtually no heterogeneity between studies (I2 = 0%). All studies scored 6–8, on the Newcastle–Ottawa scale of 0–9, indicating good quality. Eleven of the 12 studies that met review inclusion criteria did not report sex-specific relative risk, and these data were collected through direct correspondence with the study authors. Conclusion/interpretation Consistent with other studies, we found evidence that diabetes is an independent risk factor for PAD. However, in contrast to similar studies of other types of cardiovascular disease, we did not find evidence that diabetes confers a greater excess risk in women compared to men for PAD. More research is needed to explain this sex differential between PAD and other forms of CVD, in the sequelae of diabetes. In addition, we found that very few studies reported the sex-specific relative risk for the association between diabetes and PAD, adding to existing evidence for the need for improved reporting of sex-disaggregated results in cardiovascular disease research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The influence of intensive glucose control in diabetic patients on the macrovascular outcomes is controversial. Thus, this study aimed to elucidate the effect of preprocedural hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) on clinical outcomes after endovascular therapy for lower extremity artery disease (LEAD) in diabetic patients. METHODS Diabetic patients were enrolled from the retrospective cohorts of a Korean multicenter endovascular therapy registry and were divided according to the HbA1c level during index admission into the optimal (< 7.0%) or suboptimal (≥ 7.0%) glycemic control groups. The primary endpoints were major adverse limb events (MALE, a composite of major amputation, minor amputation, and reintervention). RESULTS Of the 1103 patients enrolled (897 men, mean age 68.2 ± 8.9 years), 432 (39.2%) were classified into the optimal glycemic control group and 671 (60.8%) into the suboptimal glycemic control group. In-hospital events and immediate procedural complications were not different between the two groups. The suboptimal group showed a trend towards a higher incidence of MALE than the optimal group (log-rank p = 0.072). Although no significant differences were found between the two groups in terms of overall survival or amputation, the risk of reintervention was significantly higher in the suboptimal group (log-rank p = 0.048). In the multivariate Cox regression model, suboptimal glycemic control was one of the independent predictors for reintervention. When our data were analyzed according to the initial presentation, suboptimal preprocedural HbA1c significantly increased the incidence of MALE compared with optimal preprocedural HbA1c only in patients with intermittent claudication. CONCLUSION In diabetic patients undergoing endovascular therapy for LEAD, suboptimal preprocedural HbA1c is associated with an increased risk of adverse limb events, especially in patients with intermittent claudication. Further prospective research will be required to validate the role of more intensive glycemic control on the reduction of adverse limb events in diabetic patients undergoing endovascular therapy for LEAD.

Abstract
In the last two decades, new insights have been gained regarding sex/gender-related differences in cardiovascular disease (CVD). CVD represents the leading cause of death worldwide in both men and women, accounting for at least one-third of all deaths in women and half of deaths in women over 50 years in developing countries. Important sex-related differences in prevalence, presentation, management, and outcomes of different CVDs have been recently discovered, demonstrating sex/gender-specific pathophysiologic features in the presentation and prognosis of CVD in men and women. A large amount of evidence has highlighted the role of sex hormones in protecting women from CVDs, providing an advantage over men that is lost when women reach the menopause stage. This hormonal-dependent shift of sex-related CVD risk consequently affects the overall CVD epidemiology, particularly in light of the increasing trend of population aging. The benefits of physical activity have been recognized for a long time as a powerful preventive approach for both CVD prevention and aging-related morbidity control. Exercise training is indeed a potent physiological stimulus, which reduces primary and secondary cardiovascular events. However, the underlying mechanisms of these positive effects, including from a sex/gender perspective, still need to be fully elucidated. The aim of this work is to provide a review of the evidence linking sex/gender-related differences in CVD, including sex/gender-specific molecular mediators, to explore whether sex- and gender-tailored physical activity may be used as an effective tool to prevent CVD and improve clinical outcomes in women.

Abstract
PURPOSE Hyperhomocysteinemia is an independent risk factor for cardio- and cerebrovascular diseases. However, the relationship between plasma homocysteine (Hcy) concentration and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) has not been completely characterized. The aim of the present study was to determine the relationship between plasma Hcy concentration and new-onset PAD and to assess the effects of combinations of Hcy and traditional cardiovascular risk factors. PATIENTS AND METHODS We conducted a prospective community-based cohort study of 3119 Chinese participants who did not have PAD at baseline, with a median follow-up period of 2.30 years. We used multivariate logistic regression models to evaluate the relationship between high Hcy (≥10µmol/L) and new-onset PAD. The effects of combinations of high Hcy and traditional cardiovascular risk factors were assessed using logistic regression analysis. RESULTS After adjustment for 14 covariates, high Hcy concentration was significantly associated with new-onset PAD (odds ratio [OR]=2.08, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.08-4.03, P=0.030). Smokers with high Hcy concentration were substantially more likely to have new-onset PAD than non-smokers with normal Hcy concentration (OR=4.44, 95% CI: 1.77-11.12, P=0.001). The effect of diabetes on PAD became significant when present in combination with high Hcy concentration (OR=3.67, 95% CI: 1.25-10.80, P=0.018). Participants with both elevated Hcy levels and older age had the highest risk of new-onset PAD (OR=4.28, 95% CI: 1.83-10.01, P<0.001). With regard to the joint effect of Hcy and hypertension, dyslipidemia or sex, there was also a trend towards increased risk across four different groups (P for trend=0.026, 0.035, 0.016, respectively). CONCLUSION High plasma Hcy concentration independently predicts the incidence of PAD. Furthermore, there is a joint effect of high Hcy concentration and traditional cardiovascular risk factors such as smoking, diabetes and aging on the incidence of PAD.
