Ordered macroporous Co3O4-supported Ru nanoparticles: A robust catalyst for efficient hydrodeoxygenation of anisole

Efficient Hydrodeoxygenation of Lignin-Derived Phenolic Compounds Over Ru-Based Catalyst with Biochar and Al2O3 as Composite Support

Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is a common strategy for upgrading lignin-derived phenolic compounds into high-quality liquid fuels, and the support rational design of HDO catalysts is critical to achieve a good reaction performance. This work proposed a novel Ru-based catalyst with biochar and Al2O3 as composite support. The addition of biochar can enlarge the porous structure, and the addition of Al2O3 can enhance the acid property of the support. By regulating the content of biochar and Al2O3 components, Ru/CA-2 catalyst achieved the best HDO performance of lignin-derived phenolic compounds, with the optimal component balance of 50 %C and 50 %Al2O3. This catalyst possesses the high Ru metal dispersion (1.38 nm particle size) to activate the hydrogen source, the moderate acid property to suppress carbon deposition and the abundant oxygen vacancy to promote substrate adsorption at the same time. 99.9 % conversion of guaiacol is obtained at 230 °C, with 99.9 % selectivity towards cyclohexane. Ru/CA-2 catalyst also has a good recyclability, with no obvious activity loss after five runs. Furthermore, in the application of catalytic lignin-oil HDO, the content of hydrocarbons increase from 10.7 % to 95.7 %, showing great potential on the industrial usage.

A Critical Review of the Synthesis and Applications of Spinel-Derived Catalysts to Bio-Oil Upgrading

The transformation of renewable bio-oil into value-added chemicals and bio-oil through catalytic processes embodies an efficient approach within the realm of advancing sustainable energy. Spinel-based catalysts have garnered significant attention owing to their ability to precisely tune metals within the framework, thereby facilitating adjustments to structural, physical, and electronic properties, coupled with their remarkable thermal stability. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in spinel-based catalysts tailored specifically for upgrading bio-oil. Its objective is to shed light on their potential to address the limitations of conventional catalysts, thereby advancing sustainable biofuel production. Initially, a comprehensive analysis is conducted on different metal oxide composites in terms of their similarity and dissimilarity on properties. Subsequently, the synthesis methodologies of spinels are scrutinised and potential avenues for their modification are explored. Following this, an in-depth discussion ensues regarding the utilisation of spinels as catalysts or catalyst precursors for catalytic cracking, ketonisation, catalytic hydrodeoxygenation, steam and aqueous-phase reforming, as well as electrocatalytic upgrading of bio-oil, with a specific emphasis on elucidating their catalytic reactivity, and underlying structure-activity correlation and catalysis mechanisms. Finally, the challenges and potential prospects in utilising spinels for the catalytic valorisation of renewable biofuel are addressed, with a specific focus on the use of machine learning - based approaches to optimise the structure and activity of spinel catalysts. This review aims to provide specific directions for further exploration and maximisation of the spinel catalysts in the bio-oil upgrading field.

Promoting selective water decontamination via boosting activation of periodate by nanostructured Ru-supported Co3O4 catalysts

The superior catalytic efficiency of ruthenium (Ru)-based nanocomposites in advanced oxidation processes for water decontamination has attracted accumulating attention worldwide. However, rather limited knowledge is currently available regarding their roles in activating periodate (PI), an emerging oxidant with versatile environmental applications. This study firstly delineated that Ru-supported Co₃O₄ (Ru/Co₃O₄), a typical Ru-based nanomaterial, can efficiently accomplish PI activation to eliminate multiple organic micropollutants and inactivate different pathogenic bacteria. Almost all eight micropollutants can be completely removed within 2 min of Ru/Co₃O₄-PI oxidation except sulfamethoxazole (SMX), which was degraded ∼70 % at 2 min with 100 % mineralization after 10 min. The excellent catalytic performance was independent of PI dosages, initial pH, and coexisting water constituents, demonstrating its prominent capability as a selective oxidation strategy. Diverse lines of evidence indicated the dominant role of single oxygen in the Ru/Co₃O₄-PI system, which triggered the generation of five transformation products of SMX with reduced environmental risks. Concurrently, PI was stoichiometrically converted to the eco-friendly IO₃^-. Additionally, Ru/Co₃O₄-PI system achieved 6-log inactivation of different pathogenic bacteria within 1 min, implying the feasibility of rapid water disinfection. Overall, this work demonstrated the excellent promise of Ru-based composites in PI activation for highly efficient and selective water decontamination.

Hydrogenolysis of Lignin and C–O Linkages Containing Lignin-Related Compounds over a Macroporous Silicalite-1 Array-Supported Ru-Ni Phosphide Composite

Hydrogenolysis via targeted depolymerization of C–O linkages is a techno-economic beneficial process for converting lignin into highly valuable chemicals and clean fuels. In this work, a macroporous silicalite-1 (S-1) array-supported Ru-Ni metallic phosphide composite (Ru-Ni12P5/S-15) was prepared as a catalyst and hydrogenolysis activity under relative mild conditions was investigated using a series of compounds containing ether linkages as lignin-related model compounds. The Lewis acid sites originating from the unreduced Ru species and the macroporous geometry of S-1 significantly influenced hydrogenolysis activity and product selectivity. Analysis of the mechanism demonstrated that both the aryl ether and aliphatic ether linkages were directly hydrogenated over Ru-Ni12P5/S-15. 2D-HSQC-NMR spectroscopy demonstrated that the ether linkages of lignin were efficiently cleaved by Ru-Ni12P5/S-15. Furthermore, the obtained liquid hydrogenolysis products are high value-added chemicals used for pharmaceutical production and can be facilely tuned via the reaction conditions.
