Abstract
The secondary outbreak of cyanobacteria after algicide treatment has been a serious problem to water ecosystems. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an algaecide widely used in practice, but similar re-bloom problems are inevitably encountered. Our work found that Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa) temporarily hibernates after H2O2 treatment, but there is still a risk of secondary outbreaks. Interestingly, the dormant period was as long as 20 and 28 days in 5 mg L-1 and 20 mg L-1 H2O2 treatment groups, respectively, but the photosynthetic activity was both restored much earlier (within 14 days). Subsequently, a quantitative imaging flow cytometry-based method was constructed and confirmed that the re-bloom had undergone two stages including first recovery and then re-division. The expression of ftsZ and fabZ genes showed that M. aeruginosa had active transcription processes related to cell division protein and fatty acid synthesis during the dormancy stat. Furthermore, metabolomics suggested that the recovery of M. aeruginosa was mainly by activating folate and salicylic acid synthesis pathways, which promoted environmental stress resistance, DNA synthesis, and cell membrane repair. This study reported the comprehensive mechanisms of secondary outbreak of M. aeruginosa after H2O2 treatment. The findings suggest that optimizing the dosage and frequency of H2O2, as well as exploring the potential use of salicylic acid and folic acid inhibitors, could be promising directions for future algal control strategies.

Abstract
Chloramination is an effective strategy for eliminating pathogens from drinking water and repressing their regrowth in water distribution systems. However, the inevitable release of NH4+ potentially promotes nitrification and associated ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) contamination. In this study, AOB (Nitrosomona eutropha) were isolated from environmental water and treated with two disinfection stages (chloramine disinfection and chloramine residues) to investigate the occurrence mechanisms of AOB in chloramination. The results showed that N. eutropha had considerable resistance to monochloramine compared to Escherichia coli, whose inactivation rate constant was 19.4-fold lower. The higher resistance was attributed to high levels of extracellular polymer substances (EPS) in AOB, which contribute to AOB surviving disinfection and entering the distribution system. In AOB response to the chloramine residues stage, the respiratory activity of N. eutropha remained at a high level after three days of continuous exposure to high chloramine residue concentrations (0.5-1.5 mg/L). Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) suggested that the mechanism of N. eutropha tolerance involved a significantly high expression of the intracellular oxidative stress-regulating (sodB, txrA) and protein-related (NE1545, NE1546) genes. Additionally, this process enhanced EPS secretion and promoted biofilm formation. Adhesion predictions based on the XDLVO theory corroborated the trend of biofilm formation. Overall, the naturally higher resistance contributed to the survival of AOB in primary disinfection; the enhanced antioxidant response of surviving N. eutropha accompanied by biofilm formation was responsible for their increased resistance to the residual chloramines.

Abstract
The omnipresence of microplastics (MPs) in potable water has become a major concern due to their potential disruptive effect on human health. Therefore, the effective removal of MPs in drinking water is essential for life preservation. In this study, tap water containing microplastic <10 μm in size was treated using constructed pilot-scale rapid sand filtration (RSF) system to investigate the removal efficiency and the mechanisms involved. The results show that the RSF provides significant capacity for the removal and immobilization of MPs < 10 μm diameter (achieving 98 %). Results showed that silicate sand reacted with MPs through a cooperative assembly process, which mainly involved interception, trapping, entanglement, and adsorption. The MPs were quantified by Flow cytometry instrument. A kinetics study underlined the pivotal role of physio-chemisorption in the removal process. MP particles smaller than absorbents, saturation of adsorbents, and reactor hydrodynamics were identified as limiting factors, which were alleviated by backwashing. Backwashing promoted the desorption of up to 97 % MPs, conducive for adsorbent active site regeneration. These findings revealed the critical role of RSF and the importance of backwashing in removing MPs. Understanding the mechanisms involved in removing microplastics from drinking water is crucial in developing more efficient strategies to eliminate them.

Abstract
Disinfection is essential for the control of waterborne pathogens (WPs), especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. WP can enter the viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state to evade disinfection, seriously threatening water safety. VBNC WPs should be considered as an emerging contaminant to ensure a higher level of safety of the water environment. Here, this study systematically reviewed the water disinfection methods that could induce WPs into the VBNC state, and clarified the risks of different species of VBNC WPs in the relevant water environment. The physicochemical and physiological properties of VBNC cells (e.g., morphology, physiology, and resuscitation potential) were then evaluated to better understand their potential health risks. In addition, the dominant detection methods of VBNC WPs were discussed, and real-time and label-free technologies were recommended for the study of VBNC WPs in the aquatic environment. The possible mechanisms of formation and persistence at the genetic level were highlighted. It concluded that the VBNC state has a deeper level of dormancy than the persistent state, which is associated with the general stress response and stringent response systems, and its persistence is also associated with the active efflux of harmful substances. Finally, the current shortcomings and research perspectives of VBNC bacteria were summarized. This review provides new insights into the characteristics, detection methods, persistence mechanisms, and potential health risks of VBNC WPs induced by water disinfection processes, and also serves as a basis for microbial risk control in the aquatic environment.

Abstract
Antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections are a growing global threat to public health. Chlorine-based water disinfection and some advanced oxidation processes significantly increase the risk of ARGs release and transmission in the aquatic environment. Therefore, it is critical to develop or optimize disinfection methods to reduce the conversion and transmission of ARGs in natural water. This study investigated whether the solar/periodate (PI) system inhibited the natural transmission of ARGs and its mechanism. The results showed that solar/PI systems could effectively inhibit the propagation of ARGs in two simulated natural transformation systems, up to more than 100 times. By characterizing the cellular process of bacteria treated by the solar/PI system, we found that the solar/PI system could directly cause damage to DNA bases and its dual effect with almost no damage to the bacterial cell membrane, which was the main reason why this technology could inhibit natural transformation processes. Specifically, the inhibition effect of solar/PI on bacteria did not result in enhanced membrane permeability under appropriate PI dosage (<200 μM), which greatly reduced the risk of secondary contamination of eARGs released by traditional disinfection. Our findings could help improve existing disinfection strategies to ensure that antibiotic resistance is not spread in the natural water environment.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the short-term efficacy of perioperative fecal microbiota transplantation combined with nutritional support in patients with radiation-induced enteritis complicated by intestinal obstruction. Methods: The cohort of this prospective cohort study comprised 45 patients (nine men and 36 women) with radiation-induced enteritis complicated by intestinal obstruction admitted to Shanghai Tenth People's Hospital Affiliated to Tongji University from January 2022 to October 2022. The median age was 53 (42-65) years. Thirty-five of the patients had gynecological tumors and 10 colorectal malignancies. The patients were randomly allocated to a fecal microbiota transplantation group of 20 patients who underwent fecal microbiota transplantation starting 2 weeks before surgery for 6 days, in addition to receiving conventional perioperative treatment, and a conventional treatment group of 25 patients who only received nutritional support during the perioperative period. There were no significant differences in baseline characteristics (sex, age, preoperative nutritional indices, and surgical procedure) between the two groups (all P>0.05). Postoperative recovery (time to passing flatus or a bowel movement, length of stay) and complications were compared between the two groups. Postoperative complications within 30 days after surgery classified in accordance with the international Clavien-Dindo classification of surgical complications (I-V) were statistically analyzed. Improvement in gastrointestinal symptoms, namely abdominal pain, distension, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding) and gastrointestinal quality of life scores (which include 36 problems rated 0-144 points related to physical, psychological, social activities and family life; the lower the score, the more severe the symptoms) were compared between the two groups. Nutritional recovery was assessed by body mass, body mass index, total protein, albumin, prealbumin, and hemoglobin. Results: Compared with the conventional treatment group, the postoperative hospital stay was shorter in the fecal microbiota transplantation group (8.0±4.3 days vs. 11.2±5.4 days, t=2.157, P=0.037) and the time to passage of flatus or having a bowel movement was earlier (2.2±3.2 days vs. 3.9±2.3 days, t=2.072, P=0.044). There were 26 postoperative complications in the fecal microbiota transplantation group and 59 in the conventional treatment group. There were 20 and 36 Grade I to II complications and no and three Grade III to V complications in the transplantation and conventional treatment group, respectively. The overall grade of complication did not differ significantly between the two groups (P=0.544). However, the incidence of postoperative intestinal inflammatory obstruction was lower in the fecal microbiota transplantation than the conventional treatment group (10.0% [2/20] vs. 40.0% [10/25], P=0.040). One patient in the conventional treatment group died. This patient had complete intestinal obstruction complicated by severe malnutrition preoperatively, and an intestinal fistula complicated by abdominal infection postoperatively, and died despite active treatment. Nineteen and 23 patients in the transplantation and conventional treatment group, respectively, attended for follow-up 1 month after surgery; 19 and 21, respectively, attended for follow-up 3 months after surgery, and 17 and 20, respectively, attended for follow-up 6 months after surgery. There were no significant differences between the two groups in abdominal pain or rectal bleeding 1, 3, or 6 months after surgery (all P>0.05). One month after surgery, the incidence of abdominal distension and diarrhea was lower in the fecal microbiota transplantation than in the conventional treatment group (3/19 vs. 48.0% [11/23], P=0.048; 3/19 vs. 52.2% [12/23], P=0.023). However, at the 3 and 6 month follow-ups the incidence of abdominal distension and diarrhea had gradually decreased in both groups and the differences between the groups were not statistically significant (P>0.05 for all). Scores for gastrointestinal quality of life improved significantly in both treatment groups compared with preoperative values (F=71.250, P<0.001; F=79.130, P<0.001, respectively). Scores for gastrointestinal quality of life were higher in the fecal microbiota transplantation than the conventional treatment group at all follow-up time points (P<0.05). One-way ANOVA showed that body mass, body mass index, and total protein, albumin and hemoglobin concentrations improved in both groups compared with preoperative values (all P<0.05). Prealbumin concentration improved significantly in the transplantation (F=5.514, P=0.002), but not in the conventional, group (F=1.535, P=0.211). The improvements in body mass, body mass index, total protein, and albumin were better in the fecal microbiota transplantation than conventional treatment group at 3 and 6 months of follow-up (all P<0.05). Conclusion: Perioperative fecal microbiota transplantation combined with nutritional support is effective in improving early postoperative nutritional status and quality of life in patients with radiation-induced enteritis complicated by intestinal obstruction.

Abstract
Frequent outbreak of cyanobacteria is a serious problem for drinking water treatment. The microcystins released from Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa) could cause irreversible damage to human health. Catalyst-free solar/periodate (PI) system has recently presented great potential for bacterial inactivation, whereas the application potential and underlying mechanisms of the effective M. aeruginosa control remain unclear. Our work delineated the key role of ROS that inactivating/harmless disposing M. aeruginosa in the simulated sunlight (SSL)/PI system. Singlet oxygen may specifically cause DNA damage but maintain membrane integrity, preventing the risk of microcystins leakage. The SSL/PI 300 μM system could also effectively inhibit M. aeruginosa recovery for >7 days and completely degrade microcystin-LR (50.0 μg/L) within 30 min. Non-targeted metabolomic analysis suggested that the SSL/PI system inactivated M. aeruginosa mainly by interrupting the Calvin-Benson cycle, which damaged the metabolic flux of glycolysis and its downstream pathways such as the oxidative PPP pathway and glutathione metabolism. Furthermore, the activated PI system exhibited an even better algal inhibition under natural sunlight irradiation, evidenced by the seriously damaged cell membrane of M. aeruginosa. Overall, this study reported the comprehensive mechanisms of algal control and application potentials of solar/PI systems. The findings facilitated the development of emerging algicidal technology and its application in controlling environmental harmful algae.

Abstract
The occurrence of viable but non-culturable (VBNC) bacteria in drinking water may result in significant underestimation of viable cell counts detected by culture-based method, thus raising microbiological safety concern. Chlorine disinfection has been widely used in drinking water treatment to ensure microbiological safety. However, the effect of residual chlorine on inducing bacteria in biofilms into a VBNC state remains unclear. We determined cell numbers of Pseudomonas fluorescence in different physiological states (culturable, viable, dead) by heterotrophic plate count method and flow cytometer in a flow cell system under 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 mg/L chlorine treatment. Numbers of culturable cells were 4.66 ± 0.47 Log10, 2.82 ± 0.76 Log10, 2.30 ± 1.23 Log10 (CFU/112.5 mm3) in each chlorine treatment group. However, viable cell numbers remained at 6.32 ± 0.05 Log10, 6.11 ± 0.24 Log10, 5.08 ± 0.81 Log10 (cells/112.5 mm3). Significant difference between numbers of viable and culturable cells demonstrated chlorine could induce bacteria in biofilms into a VBNC state. In this study, flow cells combination with Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) were applied to construct an Automated experimental Platform for replicate Biofilm cultivation and structural Monitoring (APBM) system. The OCT imaging results demonstrated that changes of biofilm structure under chlorine treatment were closely related to their inherent characteristics. Biofilms with low thickness and high roughness coefficient or porosity were easier to be removed from the substrate. Biofilm with high rigid properties were more resistant to chlorine treatment. Even though >95 % bacteria in biofilms entered a VBNC state, the biofilm physical structure was still remained. This study revealed the possibility of bacteria to enter a VBNC state in drinking water biofilms and changes of biofilm structure with different characteristics under chlorine treatment, which provide reference for biofilms control in drinking water distribution system.

Abstract
A rising outbreak of waterborne diseases caused by global warming requires higher microbial stability in the drinking water distribution system (DWDS). Chloramine disinfection is gaining popularity in this context due to its good persistent stability and fewer disinfection byproducts. However, the microbiological risks may be significantly magnified by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in distribution systems during global warming, which is rarely noticed. Hence, this work mainly focuses on AOB to explore its impact on water quality biosafety in the context of global warming. Research indicates that global warming-induced high temperatures can directly or indirectly promote the growth of AOB, thus leading to nitrification. Further, its metabolites or cellular residues can be used as substrates for the growth of heterotrophic bacteria (e.g., waterborne pathogens). Thus, biofilm may be more persistent in the pipelines due to the presence of AOB. Breakpoint chlorination is usually applied to control such situations. However, switching between this strategy and chloramine disinfection would result in even more severe nitrification and other adverse effects. Based on the elevated microbiological risks in DWDS, the following aspects should be paid attention to in future research: (1) to understand the response of nitrifying bacteria to high temperatures and the possible association between AOB and pathogenic growth, (2) to reveal the mechanisms of AOB-mediated biofilm formation under high-temperature stress, and (3) to develop new technologies to prevent and control the occurrence of nitrification in drinking water distribution system.

Abstract
On-site hospital wastewater treatment system widely applying chlorination has been regarded as an important barrier to curb the dissemination of antibiotic resistance. Chlorination-residual viable and viable but non-culturable (VBNC) bacteria probably lead to overestimate the effect of disinfection, while their antibiotic resistance risks imported from hospital effluents to municipal pipe network may be ignored. In this study, we quantified viable/VBNC Escherichia coli and Enterococcus in chlorination of an on-site hospital wastewater treatment system and assessed their antibiotic resistance risks. The numbers of viable/VBNC Escherichia coli and Enterococcus in raw wastewater were detected as high as 5.76-6.34/5.76-6.33 and 5.44-5.76/5.44-5.75 log10(cells/mL). Meanwhile, high proportions of antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli and Enterococcus to culturable Escherichia coli and Enterococcus were observed, especially carrying ampicillin resistance (22.25-41.70 % and 28.09-54.05 %). Chlorination could remove 0.44-1.88-/0.43-1.88- and 0.29-1.29-/0.28-1.28-log of viable/VBNC and complete culturable Escherichia coli and Enterococcus, but cause antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) to be released outside cells, and possibly further enhance the antibiotic resistance of viable bacteria. Low detections of antibiotics suggested that the occurrence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) may not be accompanied by the corresponding antibiotics. Different sampling months had some impacts on above results, while the results were basically stable at different sampling times of hospital daily working period. The high release rates (11.26-13.02 and 11.59-12.98 log10(cells/h)) and cumulative amounts (15.41-16.12 and 15.75-16.14 log10(cells)) of chlorination-residual viable/VBNC Escherichia coli and Enterococcus indirectly assessed the potential risks of bacterial antibiotic resistance entering municipal pipe network. Additionally, the contributions from the corresponding antibiotic ceftazidime, ciprofloxacin, and vancomycin with the cumulative amounts of 2.57-4.85, 5.73-7.50, and 5.21-7.14 kg should also be taken seriously. Residual chlorine could serve as an important signal indicator for the risk assessment.

Abstract
Nitrous oxide (N2O) is an effective ozone-depleting substance and an important greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. Fertilization is a major factor that dictates agricultural N2O emissions. In this work, as opposed to the commonly-seen highly-soluble nitrogen (N) fertilizers, the feasibility of using struvite as a slow-releasing N-fertilizer and its mechanism for mitigating N2O emissions were investigated. During the 149-d field cultivation of water spinach (Ipomoea Aquatica Forsk), struvite exhibited comparable crop yields, with a 40.8-58.1% N2O reduction compared with commercial fertilizers. In addition, struvite fertilization increased soil bacterial diversity and denitrification genes levels (narG, nirS, nirK, norB and nosZ) effectively, but decreased nitrification genes contents (amoA). By conducting partial least-square path modeling, it was found that the use of struvite would satisfy the soil N control and pH regulation, which altered N-cycling related bacteria and ultimately mitigated N2O emissions. From an economic aspect, using struvite as a N-fertilizer may increase the struvite market price from 50 to 131.7 €/ton. These findings help change the inherent impression that struvite is only suitable as a P-fertilizer, the application of struvite as N-fertilizer could effectively mitigate the agriculture N2O emission and inspire the application of struvite-based P-recovery technologies.

Abstract
Disinfection plays an essential role in waterborne pathogen control and disease prevention, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Catalyst-free solar light/periodate (PI) system has recently presented great potential in water disinfection, whereas the in-depth chemical and microbiological mechanisms for efficient bacterial inactivation remain unclear. Our work delineated firstly the critical role of singlet oxygen, instead of reported hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals, in dominating bacterial inactivation by the PI/simulated sunlight (SSL) system. Multi-evidence demonstrated the prominent disinfection performance of this system for Staphylococcus aureus in terms of culturability (> 6 logs CFU), cellular integrity, and metabolic activity. Particularly, the excellent intracellular DNA removal (> 95%) indicated that PI/SSL system may function as a selective disinfection strategy to diminish bacterial culturability without damaging the cell membrane. The PI/SSL system could also effectively inhibit bacterial regrowth for > 5 days and horizontal gene transfer between E. coli genera. Nontargeted metabolomic analysis suggested that PI/SSL system inactivated bacteria by triggering the accumulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species and the depletion of reduced glutathione. Additionally, the PI/SSL system could accomplish simultaneous micropollutant removal and bacterial inactivation, suggesting its versatility in water decontamination. Overall, this study deciphers more comprehensive antibacterial mechanisms of this environmentally friendly disinfection system, facilitating the technical development and application of the selective disinfection strategy in environmental pathogen control.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the genetic diversity and genetic differentiation of different geographical isolates of Gohieria fusca. METHODS G. fusca isolates were sampled from Wuhu (WH), Bengbu (BB) and Bozhou cities (BZ) of Anhui Province and Jiaxing City of Zhejiang Province (JX). Mitochondrial cytochrome b (Cytb) and ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) genes were amplified in WH, BB, BZ and JX isolates of G. fusca using PCR assay. The gene sequences were edited and aligned using the software Chromas 2 and DNASTAR 1.00, and the haplotype, haplotype diversity (Hd) and nucleotide polymorphism (Pi) of each isolate were calculated using the software DnaSP 5.10.00. The genetic differentiation among isolates (Fst) and gene flow value (Nm) were estimated using the software MEGA 10.2, and a phylogenetic tree was built. Tests of neutrality and analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) were performed using the software Arlequin 3.1 and a haplotype network was built based on the Median-Joining network using the software Network 10.2. RESULTS PCR assay showed that the sizes of the Cytb and ITS genes were 372 bp and 1 301 to 1 320 bp, respectively. All four isolates of G. fusca presented high genetic diversity based on mitochondrial Cytb and ITS genes (Hd = 0.804, Pi = 0.006 91). AMOVA showed genetic differentiation among geographical isolates of G. fusca (Fst = 0.202 40, P < 0.05), and the genetic variation was mainly caused by intra-population variations (79.76%). Gene flow analysis showed a high level of gene flow among G. fusca isolates (Nm > 1). Tests of neutrality based on Cytb gene measured a Tajima's D value of -1.796 31 (P < 0.05) and a Fu's FS value of -3.293 98 (P < 0.05) in WH isolate of G. fusca, indicating population expansion in WH isolate of G. fusca. Haplotype network analysis and phylogenetic analysis revealed no remarkable geographical distribution pattern among different geographical isolates of G. fusca. All four isolates of G. fusca presented high genetic diversity (Hd = 0.985, Pi = 0.011 97). AMOVA showed moderate level of genetic differentiation between four isolates (Fst = 0.104 62, P < 0.05). The tests of neutrality based on ITS genes measured a Tajima's D value of -6.088 20 and a Fu's FS value of -1.935 99 (both P > 0.05) in the whole isolate of G. fusca, indicating no obviously population expansion. CONCLUSIONS The four geographical isolates of G. fusca have high genetic diversity and remarkable genetic differentiation. Since a high level of gene flow is detected among different geographical isolates of G. fusca, no obvious geographical distribution pattern of G. fusca is found.

Abstract
The superior catalytic efficiency of ruthenium (Ru)-based nanocomposites in advanced oxidation processes for water decontamination has attracted accumulating attention worldwide. However, rather limited knowledge is currently available regarding their roles in activating periodate (PI), an emerging oxidant with versatile environmental applications. This study firstly delineated that Ru-supported Co3O4 (Ru/Co3O4), a typical Ru-based nanomaterial, can efficiently accomplish PI activation to eliminate multiple organic micropollutants and inactivate different pathogenic bacteria. Almost all eight micropollutants can be completely removed within 2 min of Ru/Co3O4-PI oxidation except sulfamethoxazole (SMX), which was degraded ∼70 % at 2 min with 100 % mineralization after 10 min. The excellent catalytic performance was independent of PI dosages, initial pH, and coexisting water constituents, demonstrating its prominent capability as a selective oxidation strategy. Diverse lines of evidence indicated the dominant role of single oxygen in the Ru/Co3O4-PI system, which triggered the generation of five transformation products of SMX with reduced environmental risks. Concurrently, PI was stoichiometrically converted to the eco-friendly IO3-. Additionally, Ru/Co3O4-PI system achieved 6-log inactivation of different pathogenic bacteria within 1 min, implying the feasibility of rapid water disinfection. Overall, this work demonstrated the excellent promise of Ru-based composites in PI activation for highly efficient and selective water decontamination.

Abstract
Chloramphenicol antibiotics are widely applied in human and veterinary medicine. They experience natural attenuation and/or chemical degradation during oxidative water treatment. However, the environmental risks posed by the transformation products of such organic contaminants remain largely unknown from the literature. As such, this review aims to summarize and analyze the elimination efficiency, reaction mechanisms, and resulting product risks of three typical chloramphenicol antibiotics (chloramphenicol, thiamphenicol, and florfenicol) from these transformation processes. The obtained results suggest that limited attenuation of these micropollutants is observed during hydrolysis, biodegradation, and photolysis. Comparatively, prominent abatement of these compounds is accomplished using advanced oxidation processes; however, efficient mineralization is still difficult given the formation of recalcitrant products. The in silico prediction on the multi-endpoint toxicity and biodegradability of different products is systematically performed. Most of the transformation products are estimated with acute and chronic aquatic toxicity, genotoxicity, and developmental toxicity. Furthermore, the overall reaction mechanisms of these contaminants induced by multiple oxidizing species are revealed. Overall, this review unveils the non-overlooked and serious secondary risks and biodegradability recalcitrance of the degradation products of chloramphenicol antibiotics using a combined experimental and theoretical method. Strategic improvements of current treatment technologies are strongly recommended for complete water decontamination.

Abstract
Panax notoginseng round spot disease (PRSD), caused by Mycocentrospora acerina, is the main leaf disease occurring in cultured P. notoginseng. Aiming to find a safe and efficient control method for PRSD, we studied the disease characteristics of PRSD and the optimal growth conditions of M. acerina and evaluated the efficacy of rain-shelter cultivation in PRSD control. Moreover, we described M. acerina based on morphological characterization and molecular analyses (ITS, ACT, LSU, and TEF-1α). The optimum temperature for M. acerina conidial germination was found to be 14 to 22°C. Furthermore, leaf surface wetness for at least 4 h is required for conidial germination, and conidia can successfully infect P. notoginseng when the leaf wetness lasts for more than 8 h. Additionally, rainwater splashing determines the conidial transfection distance, which is less than 2 m. Finally, our study revealed that rain-shelter cultivation is an effective and simple physical prevention strategy to control PRSD, with an average efficacy of up to 100%.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in the treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Methods: A longitudinal study was conducted. Clinical data from ASD patients with gastrointestinal symptoms and who underwent FMT in the Tenth People's Hospital affiliated to Tongji University or Jinling Hospital between May 2012 to May 2021 were retrospectively collected. Scores derived from the autism behavior checklist (ABC), the childhood autism rating scale (CARS), the Bristol stool form scale (BSFS), and the gastrointestinal symptom rating scale (GSRS) were analyzed at baseline and at the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 12th, 24th, 36th, 48th and 60th month after FMT. Records of any adverse reactions were collected. Generalized estimating equations were used for analysis of data on time points before and after FMT. Results: A total of 328 patients met the inclusion criteria for this study. Their mean age was 6.1±3.4 years old. The cohort included 271 boys and 57 girls. The percentage of patients remaining in the study for post-treatment follow-up at the 1st, 3rd, 12th, 24th, 36th, 48th and 60th month were as follows: 303 (92.4%), 284 (86.7%), 213 (64.9%), 190 (57.9%), 143 (43.6%), 79 (24.1%), 46 (14.0%), 31 (9.5%). After FMT, the average ABC score was significantly improved in the first 36 months and remained improved at the 48th month. However, the average score was not significantly different from baseline by the 60th month (1st-36th month, P<0.001; 48th month, P=0.008; 60th month, P=0.108). The average CARS score improved significantly during the first 48 months and remained improved at the 60th month (1st-48th month, P<0.001; 60th month, P=0.010). The average BSFS score was also significantly improved in the first 36 months (with an accompanying stool morphology that resembled type 4). This improvement was maintained at the 48th month. However, the average score was similar to baseline at the 60th month (1st-36th month, P<0.001; 48th month, P=0.008; 60th month, P=0.109). The average GSRS score was significantly improved during the first 24 months, but not afterwards (1st-24th month, P<0.001; 36th month, P=0.209; 48th month, P=0.996; 60th month, P=0.668). The adverse events recorded during treatment included abdominal distension in 21 cases (6.4%), nausea in 14 cases (4.3%), vomiting in 9 cases (2.7%), abdominal pain in 15 cases (4.6%), diarrhea in 18 cases (5.5%), fever in 13 cases (4.0%), and excitement in 24 cases (7.3%). All adverse reactions were mild to moderate and improved immediately after suspension of FMT or on treatment of symptoms. No serious adverse reactions occurred. Conclusion: FMT has satisfactory long-term efficacy and safety for the treatment of ASD with gastrointestinal symptoms.

Abstract
Objective: To summarize and analyze the clinical effect of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) combined with nutritional support and psychotherapy in patients with "Tetralogy of Tongji" (comprising chronic gastrointestinal dysfunction, mental and psychological disorders, malnutrition, and endocrine disorders). Methods: A longitudinal study was conducted. The inclusion criteria were as follows: (1) patients were under 70 years of age; (2) patients exhibited chronic gastrointestinal dysfunction (in accordance with the Rome IV diagnostic criteria for irritable bowel syndrome ie. chronic functional constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain and abdominal distention) with onset occurring more than one year previously; (3) patients exhibited malnutrition (body mass index ≤ 18.5 kg/m2); (4) patients exhibited depression, anxiety, or state as diagnosed by a psychologist using the Hamilton anxiety rating scale (HAMA) and the Hamilton depression scale (HAMD); (5) patients were women of childbearing age with amenorrhea or menstrual disorder with a duration ≥6 months. Patients were excluded if they exhibited gastrointestinal bleeding, short bowel syndrome, radiation-induced intestinal injury, intestinal obstruction or inflammatory bowel disease, recurrent/metastatic tumors, systemic infectious diseases, life-threatening systemic comorbidities, intorlerate to nasojejunal, percutaneous gastrostomy / jejunostomy or FMT. The clinical data of 43 patients at Shanghai Tenth People's Hospital exhibiting the "Tetralogy of Tongji" and who received microflora transplantation combined with nutritional support and psychotherapy from June 2017 to June 2021 was prospectively collected. There were 12 males and 31 females with a mean age of 35.2±16.7 years. All 43 patients had chronic gastrointestinal dysfunction. Of these, 24 patients had depression and 19 had anxiety. There were 26 women of reproductive age, including 13 cases of menstrual disorder and 9 cases of amenorrhea. The treatment intervention was a combination of FMT (microflora solution or microflora capsule), nutritional support (enteral nutrition) and psychological intervention. The following were assessed before treatment and 1, 3, 6 months after treatment: (1) gastrointestinal function was assessed using the gastrointestinal symptoms rating scale (GSRS), where a higher score is indicative of more serious gastrointestinal symptoms, and the gastrointestinal quality of life index (GIQLI), where a higher score is indicative of higher quality of life; (2) psychological status was assessed using HAMA and HAMD scores, where a lower score is indicative of reduced severity of anxiety or depression symptoms, respectively; (3) nutritional status was assessed by measurements of total blood protein, albumin, fibrinogen and prealbumin, as well as measurements of body mass and body mass index (BMI); (4) neuroendocrine function was assessed by measurement of blood levels of cortisol, dopamine and noradrenaline, as well as menstruation in women of reproductive age. Results: The follow-up rates at 1, 3 and 6 months after treatment were 90.7% (39/43), 72.1% (31/43) and 55.8% (24/43), respectively. The total effective rate for chronic gastrointestinal dysfunction was 81.4% (35/43), of which the average GSRS score decreased from 29.35±3.56 before treatment to 18.25±2.56 in the sixth month (P<0.001). The average GIQLI score increased from 56.23±10.34 before treatment to 91.04±20.39 in the sixth month (P<0.001). All patients had malnutrition before treatment. After 6 months, their body weight had increased from 40.61±8.88 kg to 50.45±6.23 kg (P<0.001), and BMI had increased from 15.17±1.87 kg/m2 to 19.58±1.42 kg/m2 (P<0.001). The average total protein level was 60.99± 5.99 g/L before treatment. After 6 months, this had increased to 64.21±4.23 g/L (F=2.715, P=0.022). The average prealbumin level increased from 150.14±56.04 mg/L before treatment to 258.17±86.94 mg/L after 6 months (F=15.124, P<0.001). In this study, 24 patients with depression/depressed state were included. After treatment, the average HAMD score in these patients decreased from 22.79±6.63 before treatment to 9.92±7.24 after 6 months (P<0.001). There were 19 patients with anxiety disorder/anxiety state. After treatment, the average HAMA score in these patients decreased from 17.15±4.34 before treatment to 7.73±4.10 after 6 months (P<0.001). Observing the endocrine efficacy of 26 women of childbearing age, it was found that the effective rate of this treatment on endocrine regulation was 69.2% (18/26). Although there was no significant change in blood cortisol levels after 6 months, average blood dopamine levels decreased from 32.91±10.65 nmol/L before treatment to 13.02±5.58 nmol/L after 6 months (P<0.001). Average blood norepinephrine levels decreased from 49.75±15.23 ng/L before treatment to 19.21±9.58 ng/L after 6 months (P<0.001). Conclusion: The strategy of FMT combined with nutritional support and psychological intervention is effective in improving the symptoms of the "Tetralogy of Tongji".

Abstract
Objective: To explore and establish the preparation system of human intestinal fluid transplantation (HIFT) and HIFT capsule, and to preliminarily apply it to clinic. Methods: Strict standards for donor screening and management were established. The nasojejunal tube was catheterized into the distal jejunum, and then it was connected with an improved disposable sterile negative pressure collection device for the collection of human intestinal fluid. After that, it was prepared into capsules by filtering, adding 10% glycerin protectant and freeze-drying method. The amount of living bacteria was used as the standard of therapeutic dose. The living bacteria amount in fluid is ≥ 5.0×108 /mL and the living bacteria proportion is ≥ 83%; the living bacteria amount in powder is ≥ 2.0×106 /g and the living bacteria proportion is ≥ 81%; The observational indicators included: (1) the basic information of the donor, the amount of living bacteria in the HIF and powder. (2) Preliminary analysis of the treatment for ASD, which combined HIFT capsule with standard FMT capsule, from February to December 2021 (Clinical trial Registration Number: ChiCTR2100043929). Evaluation criteria: Trypan blue staining method was used to detect the living bacteria amount in fluid and powder. The Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC) and Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) were used to evaluate the efficacy. Results: Compared with the parent donor, the standard donor was younger [(25.4±0.9) y vs. (30.7±3.2) y, t=-19.097, P=0.001] and had a lower body mass index [(19.7±0.5) kg/m2 vs. (20.8±1.3) kg/m2, t=-8.726, P=0.001], more in the living bacteria amount in powder [(7.47±1.52)×106/g vs. (5.03±1.38)×106/g, t=11.331, P=0.031], Chao index (205.4±6.8 vs. 194.2±7.2, t=10.415, P=0.001), and Shannon index (3.25±0.14 vs 2.72±0.27, t=19.465, P=0.001). The differences were statistically significant (all P<0.05). However, there were no significant differences in gender, drainage volume and total number of bacterial liquid colonies between the two groups (all P>0.05). Both the standard donor and the parent donor met the donor screening criteria, and the preparation fluid and powder met the treatment criteria. Eight patients received the treatment of HIFT combined with fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). Preliminary statistical results showed that HIFT combined with FMT improved ABC and CARS at the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th months. The differences were statistically significant (all P<0.05). No severe adverse reaction occurred. Conclusion: Based on the previous research on FMT preparation system and the clinical technology in our center, this study developed a high standard HIFT preparation system, and explored the clinical study of HIFT combined with FMT, in order to provide an innovative therapy for the treatment of diseases.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Scanner mismatch occurs frequently with follow-up dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans. Nearly one-in-five follow-up DXA scans were conducted on non-cross-calibrated scanners (scanner mismatch) and more than a quarter of patients who had a follow-up DXA scan had experienced scanner mismatch. INTRODUCTION Detecting significant changes in bone mineral density (BMD) with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scanners relies on the least significant change (LSC). Results from two different DXA scanners can only be compared, albeit with decreased sensitivity for change, if the LSC between the two scanners has been directly determined through cross-calibration. Performing follow-up DXA scans on non-cross-calibrated scanners (scanner mismatch) has safety and economic implications. This study aims to determine the proportion of scanner mismatch occurring at a population level. METHODS All patients who completed at least two DXA scans between 1 April 2009 and 31 December 2018 in the province of Alberta, Canada, were identified using population-based health services databases. Scanner mismatch was defined as a follow-up DXA scan completed on a DXA scanner that differed from and was not cross-calibrated to the previous DXA scanner. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to assess predictive factors that may contribute to scanner mismatch. RESULTS A total of 264,866 patients with 470,641 follow-up DXA scans were identified. Scanner mismatch occurred in 18.9% of follow-up DXA scans; 28.7% of patients experienced at least one scanner mismatch. Longer duration between scans (OR 1.25, 95% CI 1.24-1.26) and major osteoporotic fracture history before index scan (OR 1.06, 95% CI 1.03-1.08) increased risk of scanner mismatch. Osteoporosis medication use before index scan (OR 0.89; 95% CI 0.88-0.91), recency of follow-up scans (OR 0.98, 95% CI 0.73-0.98), female sex (OR 0.97, 95% CI 0.94-1.00), and age at last scan (OR 0.99, 95% CI 0.99-1.00) were associated with lower risk of scanner mismatch. CONCLUSION Scanner mismatch is a common problem, occurring in one-in-five follow-up DXA scans and affecting more than a quarter of patients. Interventions to reduce this large proportion of scanner mismatch are necessary.

Abstract
Disinfection is known to greatly alter bacterial characteristics in water, and high horizontal gene transfer (HGT) frequency occurs in eutrophic conditions. Interestingly, these two seemingly irrelevant phenomena were closely linked by a lagging response of the increased conjugation frequency probably via daily water disinfection in this study. Three disinfection methods (UV, chlorine, and UV/chlorine) were selected to investigate the increased frequency of conjugation of ARGs during the stage of continuing culture after disinfection. The results showed that the conjugative transfer frequency was inhibited for all disinfection treatments after 24 h of co-incubation. Unexpectedly, after 3-7 days of co-cultivation, the HGT frequencies were increased by 2.71-5.61-fold and 5.46-13.96-fold in chlorine (30 min) and UV/chlorine (1 min) groups compared to the control, but not in UV-irradiated groups. A neglected lagging response was found for the first time, i.e., oxidative disinfection-induced dormancy promotes conjugative transfer of ARGs. Furthermore, mechanistic insights were gained from (1) membrane permeability, (2) conjugation-regulated system, (3) efflux pump system, and (4) oxidative stress system, suggesting the critical role of enhancing efflux and oxidative stress in the propagation of ARGs. Finally, the known instantaneous effect of oxidation disinfection was compared to address the controversial debate in this research field, proposing that the dormancy level of donor bacteria is the key to evaluating whether it can promote the HGT process. This study has important environmental implications for elucidating the transmission of ARGs after oxidation disinfection.

Abstract
BackgroundImmune Checkpoint Inhibitors (ICI) have altered the landscape of cancer therapy. However, toxicities are common and up to 80% of patients will develop immune-related adverse events (irAE), including rheumatic irAEs (Rh-irAE), which can often limit their cancer treatment. Our knowledge of clinical manifestations and optimal management of patients with Rh-irAE continues to evolve as these agents are being used to treat a wider variety of cancers. Currently available data is limited to retrospective case series and case reports. There is also scarce data on the use of ICI in patients with pre-existing autoimmune disease (PAD) as these patients are often excluded from clinical trials.ObjectivesTo describe the clinical presentation, management and early outcomes of patients exposed to ICI with Rh-irAE or PAD recruited and followed prospectively from multiple sites across Canada.MethodsAdult patients with Rh-irAE from cancer immunotherapy (CTLA-4, PD-1 or PDL-1 inhibitors) or those with PAD exposed to cancer immunotherapy are prospectively recruited across 9 academic sites in Canada. Standardized clinical and biologic data are also collected. We describe clinical characteristics and management of patients recruited between January 2020 and October 2021, stratified based on the presence or absence of PAD.Results103 patients were recruited from 9 sites. From those, 85 had Rh-irAE, 47 had pre-existing musculoskeletal and rheumatic diseases, and 20 had other PAD. The most frequent Rh-irAE were joint manifestations (n = 73). Other Rh-irAE included muscle symptoms (n = 7), connective tissue disease (n = 6), vasculitis (n=2) and sarcoid (n = 3). Prednisone was the most common treatment (n = 53). Intraarticular corticosteroids were used in 7 patients. Eleven patients required conventional synthetic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARD) and only one required biologic DMARD to control the Rh-irAE. Anti-PD-1 therapies were the most used ICI (56.3%), followed by combination therapy (35.9%). Response to index immunotherapy at 6 months was available for 21 patients. Most patients had partial response (57.1%) and only 4 patients had tumor progression (19.1%). The ICI was permanently discontinued due to an irAE in 21 patients (38.1% with PAD and 61.9% without PAD). There were no deaths related to Rh-irAE.ConclusionThe initial sample of the CanRIO prospective national cohort suggests that demographic characteristics and tumor representation in people with PAD and without PAD is similar. Patients with PAD are less likely to receive combination therapy (n= 12 vs. n=25) and are less likely to have tumor progression on ICI (n=1) compared to those without PAD (n=3). Selection bias is noted in this initial sample since half of recruited patients have PAD. Abstract
UNLABELLED Fractures are associated with increased long-term mortality in patients surviving to undergo baseline DXA. Notably, excess mortality risk does not decline with increasing time since prior hip or humerus fractures, even after accounting for comorbid medical conditions and other risk factors. INTRODUCTION Mortality risk increases following most types of fracture. In routine clinical practice, patients with prior fractures seen for dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scan (DXA) are "survivors;" whether they remain at increased mortality risk is unknown. We tested the association between prior fracture and all-cause mortality, stratified by time since fracture, in patients undergoing baseline DXA. METHODS We conducted a DXA registry-based cohort study and linked to population-based health services data for the Province of Manitoba, Canada. We identified women and men ≥ 40 years with minimum 10 years of prior healthcare coverage undergoing baseline DXA and ascertained prior fracture codes since 1984 and mortality to 2017. Time since prior fracture was calculated between the clinical encounter for the fracture and baseline DXA (index date). Cox proportional hazards models estimated hazard ratios for all-cause mortality in those with compared to those without prior fracture adjusted for (1) age and sex, and (2) age, sex, comorbidities, and other covariates. RESULTS The study cohort consisted of 74,474 individuals (mean age 64.6 years, 89.7% female). During mean follow-up 9.2 years, we ascertained 14,923 (20.0%) deaths. Except for forearm fractures, all fracture sites were associated with increased mortality risk compared to those without prior fracture, even after multivariable adjustment. Excess mortality risk tended to decline slightly with time since fracture and was no longer significant > 10 years after vertebral fracture. However, excess mortality persisted > 10 years following hip or humerus fracture. CONCLUSIONS Prior fractures are associated with increased long-term mortality in patients surviving to undergo baseline DXA. Excess mortality risk does not decline with time since prior hip or humerus fractures, after accounting for potential confounders. Fracture prevention may have important long-term benefits preserving life expectancy.

Abstract
BackgroundClinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) disease activity score (DAS) are measuring different aspects of axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA), they are essential in disease activity assessment. The radiomics was on facilitating readings by clinical specialists via enhancing the medical images in which subtle data differences could be distinguished.ObjectivesIf the additional information of MRI imaging can be considered as a predictor for axSpA disease activity? In this study, we sought to construct a nomogram integrating the sacroiliac joint (SIJ)- MRI radiomics features and the inflammatory biomarkers to assess disease activity and compare it with clinical disease acitivity index in axSpA patients.Methods203 patients data were collected prospectively and confirmed as axSpA were randomly divided into training (n = 143) and validation cohorts (n = 60). 1316 radiomics features were extracted from the 3.0T SIJ-MRI. A Nomogram model was constructed using multivariate logistic regression analysis Incorporating independent clinical factors and radiomics features score (Rad-score). The performance of clinics, Rad-score and nomogram models were evaluated by ROC analysis, calibration curve and decision curve analysis (DCA), and compared with the disease activity index(Ankylosing Spondylitis DAS (ASDAS)-C reactive protein (CRP), ASDAS-erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI)) and Spondyloarthritis Research Consortium of Canada (SPARCC) MRI scoring system.ResultsThe Rad-score allowed a good discrimination in the training (AUC, 0.91; 95% CI, 0.85-0.96) and the validation cohort (AUC, 0.84; 95% CI, 0.73-0.96). The CRP-radiomics nomogram model also showed favorable discrimination in the training (AUC, 0.96; 95% CI, 0.93-0.99) and the validation cohort (AUC, 0.89; 95% CI, 0.80-0.98), better than BASDAI(AUC, 0.58), ASDAS-CRP(AUC, 0.72), ASDAS-ESR(AUC, 0.77), ESR(AUC, 0.72), CRP(AUC, 0.77) and BASFI(AUC, 0.73), had no statistical difference with SPARCC(AUC, 0.87). Calibration curves and DCA demonstrated the nomogram fit well (p > 0.05) and was useful for activity evaluation.ConclusionRad-score showed good discriminative ability to assess disease activity in axSpA. Abstract
BackgroundBone marrow oedema (BMO) of the sacroiliac joints (SIJs) is evaluated to diagnose, classify and monitor disease activity in patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). Available quantitative methodologies rely on human visual assessment, and errors can’t be completely avoided. Radiomics can extract and select discriminative and quantified features from regions of interest (ROIs), making a more accurate and objective description of BMO.ObjectivesTo develop a more objective and efficient method based on radiomics to evaluate BMO of the SIJs by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with axSpA in comparison with Spondyloarthritis Research Consortium of Canada (SPARCC) scoring system.MethodsFrom September 2013 to July 2021, 523 patients with axSpA underwent 3.0T SIJ-MRI were included, who were randomly classified as training cohort(n=367) and validation cohort(n=156). The optimal radiomics features, selected from the 3.0T SIJ-MRI in the training cohort, were included to build the radiomics model. Four clinical risk predictors were adopted to build the clinical model. The performance of the clinical and radiomics models was evaluated by ROC analysis and decision curve analysis (DCA). Rad-scores were calculated by the radiomics model and SPARCC scores were performed to quantify the BMO of SIJs. We also assessed the correlation between Rad-score and SPARCC score.ResultsThe radiomics model, built by 15 optimal features, showed favorable discrimination about SPARCC score <2 or ≥2 both in the training (AUC, 0.91; 95% CI: 0.88-0.94) and the validation cohort (AUC, 0.89; 95% CI, 0.84-0.94). DCA confirmed that the radiomics model was clinically useful. Furthermore, Rad-score has significant correlation with SPARCC score for scoring the status of BMO (rs=0.78, P< 0.001), and moderation correlation for scoring the change (r=0.40, P=0.005).ConclusionThe radiomics can accurately assess the BMO of the SIJs in axSpA, providing an alternative to SPARCC scoring system. Abstract
Cyanobacterial blooms are always treated in exponential phase, which demands high dosages of algicides (e.g., CuSO4). Actually, cyanobacterial blooms in late lag phase exhibit low cell-density and specific physiological/biochemical characteristics, implying the possibility of controlling blooms in a more efficient and economical way with CuSO4 treatment if cyanobacterial cells in late lag phase can be treated. In this study, the outbreakof a Microcystis bloom was simulated, and Microcystis samples in late lag and exponential phases were treated with CuSO4. The results showed that M. aeruginosa in late lag phase had a higher ratio of dividing-cells, Fv/Fm and intracellular total organic carbon content (TOC) than that in exponential phase, indicating that its metabolic activity was vigorous. M. aeruginosa in late lag phase could more easily be blocked, since a higher decrease in chlorophyll-a, Fv/Fm and membrane integrity occurred under the same dosages of CuSO4 exposure compared to M. aeruginosa in exponential phase. Meanwhile, microcystin release in late lag phase was less than that in exponential phase. Moreover, higher sensitivity in late lag phase was confirmed at the individual level, as the photosynthesis related genes psaB and rbcL were more down-regulated than those in exponential phase. In general, cyanobacteria in late lag phase exhibited higher sensitivity to CuSO4, indicating that CuSO4 treatments in late lag phase can achieve a higher control efficiency and fewer release of microcystin with low-dosages algicide. Hence, it is a more environmentally friendly strategy to control cyanobacterial blooms than the traditional strategy applied in exponential phase.

Abstract
Ozone is widely used to inactivate bacteria, fungi, and viruses. In recent years, the treatment of itchy skin diseases (eczema and atopic dermatitis) using trace ozone has also received attention. However, the feasibility of using trace ozone to replace personal care products (PCPs) has rarely been analyzed. In this study, the applicability of trace ozone was evaluated in terms of its efficiency for microbial inactivation in three types of skin microbiomes, cleaning performance on simulated human hair and epidermis, safety for simulated human hair, and contribution to emission reduction. The results revealed that at a 10:1 ratio of ozonated water to bacterial suspension, the inactivation ratios of Malassezia, C. albicans, and S. epidermidis reached 99.63%, 83.47%, and 100%, respectively. In addition, the cleaning performance of an ozone solution (0.4 mg/L) for simulated human skin contaminated with carbon black and sebum could reach 95.89% and 95.63%, respectively, with 5 min of washing. The average scores were 0.40 and 0.37 after 5 min and 10 min of ozone treatments, respectively, indicating that trace ozone does not significantly damage simulated human hair. Results also revealed that the total emissions of COD, TP, and TN would be reduced by 1.29×106, 3.55×103, and 3.63×103 mg/ (household · year), respectively, if PCPs are replaced by trace ozone. In short, our findings indicate that trace ozone is a potential alternative to PCPs. By replacing PCPs with trace ozone, the use of synthetic chemical products can be reduced and carbon emissions from oil extraction can be countered.

Abstract
Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in municipal drinking water may not be effectively removed during centralized treatment. To reduce potential health risks, water disinfection at the point-of-use scale is warranted. This study investigated the performance of boiling, a prevalent household water disinfection means, in response to ARGs contamination. We found that boiling was more efficient in inactivating both Escherichia coli and environmental bacteria compared to chlorination and pasteurization. Boiling of environmental bacteria suspension removed a much broader spectrum of ARGs and mobile genetic elements (up to 141 genes) than chlorination (up to 13 genes), such better performance was largely attributed to a stronger inactivation of chlorine-tolerant bacteria including Acinetobacter and Bacillus. Accumulation of extracellular ARGs was found during low-temperature heating (≤ 80°C) and in the initial stage of chlorination (first 3 min when initial chlorine was 5 mg/L and first 12 min when initial chlorine was 1 mg/L). These extracellular ARGs as well as the intracellular ARGs got removed as the heating temperature increased or the chlorination time prolonged. Under the same treatment time (30 min), high-temperature heating (≥ 90.1°C) damaged the DNA structure more thoroughly than chlorination (5 mg/L). Taking into account the low transferability of ARGs after DNA melting, boiling may provide an effective point-of-use approach to attenuating bacterial ARGs in drinking water and is still worth promoting in the future.

Abstract
Stagnant water can cause water quality deterioration and, in particular, microbiological contaminations, posing potential health risks to occupants. University buildings were unoccupied with little water usage during the COVID-19 pandemic. It's an opportunity to study microbiological quality of long-term stagnant water (LTSW) in university buildings. The tap water samples were collected for three months from four types of campus buildings to monitor water quality and microbial risks after long-term stagnation. Specifically, the residual chlorine, turbidity, and iron/zinc were disqualified, and the heterotrophic plate counts (HPC) exceeded the Chinese national standard above 100 times. It took 4-54 days for these parameters to recover to the routine levels. Six species of pathogens were detected with high frequency and levels (101-105 copies/100 mL). Remarkably, L. pneumophilia occurred in 91% of samples with turbidity > 1 NTU. The absence of the culturable cells for these bacteria possibly implied their occurrence in a viable but non-culturable (VBNC) status. The bacterial community of the stagnant tap water differed significantly and reached a steady state in more than 50 days. Furthermore, a high concentration of endotoxin (>10 EU/mL) was found in LTSW, which was in accordance with the high proportion of dead bacteria. The results suggested that the increased microbiological risks require more attention and the countermeasures before the building reopens should be taken.

Abstract
Antibiotic resistance has created obstacles in the treatment of infectious diseases with antibiotics. The horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) can exacerbate the dissemination of antibiotic resistance in water environments. In addition to antibiotic selective pressure, multiple non-antibiotic factors can affect the horizontal transfer of ARGs. Herein, we seek to comprehensively review the effects and relevant mechanisms of non-antibiotic factors on the horizontal transfer of ARGs in water environments, especially contaminants from human activities and water treatment processes. Four pathways have been identified to accomplish horizontal gene transfer (HGT), i.e., conjugation, transformation, transduction, and vesiduction. Changes in conjugative frequencies by non-antibiotic factors are mainly related to their concentrations, which conform to hormesis. Relevant mechanisms involve the alteration in cell membrane permeability, reactive oxygen species, SOS response, pilus, and mRNA expression of relevant genes. Transformation induced by extracellular DNA may be more vulnerable to non-antibiotic factors than other pathways. Except bacteriophage infection, the effects of non-antibiotic factors on transduction exhibit many similarities with that of conjugation. Given the secretion of membrane vesicles stimulated by non-antibiotic factors, their effects on vesiduction can be inferred. Furthermore, contaminants from human activities at sub-inhibitory or environmentally relevant concentrations usually promote HGT, resulting in further dissemination of antibiotic resistance. The horizontal transfer of ARGs is difficult to be inhibited by individual water treatment processes (e.g., chlorination, UV treatment, and photocatalysis) unless they attain sufficient intensity. Accordingly, the synergistic application containing two or more water treatment processes is recommended. Overall, we believe this review can elucidate the significance for risk assessments of contaminants from human activities and provide insights into the development of environment-friendly and cost-efficient water treatment processes to inhibit the horizontal transfer of ARGs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Cognitive impairment commonly occurs among older people worldwide. Although the Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet was associated with better cognitive function and lower risk of cognitive impairment, it could not be applied to older Chinese due to the traditional dietary characteristics in China. We aimed to develop the Chinese version of the MIND (cMIND) diet and verify its association with cognitive impairment among older Chinese individuals. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS We included a total of 11,245 participants from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Study (CLHLS) follow-up survey in 2018. The mean age of the participants at study baseline was 84.06 (±11.46) years. MEASUREMENTS We established the cMIND diet based on current evidence in the diet-cognition field, combined with Chinese dietary characteristics. The verification of its association with cognitive impairment was conducted using the data from the CLHLS follow-up survey. Adherence to the cMIND diet was assessed by the cMIND diet score, which was calculated from a food frequency questionnaire. Cognitive impairment was identified by the Mini-Mental State Examination. Instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) disability was defined according to the self-reported performance of eight activities. RESULTS The cMIND diet comprised 11 brain-healthy food groups and 1 unhealthy food group. The median cMIND diet score of all participants was 4.5 (from a total of 12 points) and the prevalence of cognitive impairment was 15.2%. Compared with the lowest tertile, the highest tertile score was associated with lower odds of cognitive impairment (odds ratio (OR)=0.60, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.51-0.72) and IADL disability (OR=0.86, 95% CI: 0.75-0.98) in the full-adjusted model. CONCLUSION We developed the cMIND diet that was suitable for older Chinese individuals, and our results suggested that higher adherence to the cMIND diet was associated with reduced odds of cognitive impairment and IADL disability. In view of the limitations of cross-sectional design in the study, further research is clearly warranted.

Abstract
Antineoplastic compounds, designed for chemotherapeutic anticancer therapy, have become emerging contaminants of global concern over the past decade due to their ubiquitous occurrence, environmental persistence, and multiple adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems. Increasing efforts have been devoted to developing efficient strategies for remediating water containing these micropollutants. In this study, the physicochemical properties, natural attenuation, and chemical reactivity with aqueous oxidizing species of five antineoplastic drugs with the highest environmental prevalence (i.e., tamoxifen, cyclophosphamide, ifosfamide, 5-fluorouracil, and methotrexate) were summarized. The removal performance, transformation products (TPs) of varying structures, overall reaction pathways, and toxicity evolution during different treatments were evaluated and discussed. Additionally, the biodegradability and multi-endpoint toxicity of each TP were predicted using in silico QSAR software. Depending on their distinct inherent structures, the reactivity of the antineoplastics with oxidizing species varied, with hydroxyl radicals exhibiting unparalleled merits in rapid oxidation. Complete elimination of these contaminants was observed during oxidative treatments, but with inadequate mineralization. Notably, the increase in toxicity within multiple processes was determined based on both experimental bioassays and theoretical predictions. This may be attributed to the adverse effects induced by the large number of identified and unknown TPs individually and in combination. Together with the environmental persistence and low biodegradability of most TPs, these results necessitate the application of efficient post-treatments in conjunction with a more thorough water safety evaluation (e.g., using high-throughput screening) of the mixtures of treated water and wastewater.

Abstract
Objective: To describe the distribution and characteristics of peripheral anterior synechiae (PAS) in patients with primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG). Methods: Retrospective case study. A total of 285 PACG patients (406 eyes) diagnosed in the Eye Hospital, School of Ophthalmology and Optometry, Wenzhou Medical University from January 2017 to August 2019 were included. They were 102 males and 183 females, with a median age of 67 years old (range, 21 to 95 years old). The PAS range was detected by gonioscopy examination, and the frequency distribution of PAS at 12 clock points was counted by clockwise. The PAS distribution at the middle point of PAS with continuous distribution and ≤6 clock points was assessed. Results: In all cases, PAS of the right eye was concentrated at 11:00 to 4:00 regions [range, 62.0% (129/208) to 78.8% (164/208)]. PAS of the left eye was concentrated at 7:00 to 1:00 regions [range, 50.0% (99/198) to 75.8% (150/198)]. When the PAS range of the atrial angle was ≤6 clock regions, it was mainly at 12:00 to 3:00 [range, 58.3% (74/127) to 67.7% (86/127)] in the right eye and at 10:00 to 12:00 [range, 54.8% (68/124) to 66.1% (82/124)] in the left eye. Among 121 cases (242 eyes) with both eyes involved, the PAS region was at 11:00 to 5:00 [range, 52.1% (63/121) to 79.3% (96/121)] in the right eye and at 8:00 to 1:00 [range, 50.4% (61/121) to 76.9% (93/121)] in the left eye. When the PAS range of the atrial angle was ≤6 clock regions, it was mainly at 12:00 to 4:00 [range, 53.2% (41/77) to 71.4% (55/77)] in the right eye and at 10:00 to 12:00 [range, 50.6% (39/77) to 64.9% (50/77)] in the left eye. In all cases, there were 171 cases of right eyes and 175 cases of left eyes with continuous angle PAS. The central PAS clock position of the right eye was mainly at 11:00 to 3:00 [range, 15.2% (26/171) to 24.0% (41/171)], and that of the left eye was mainly at 8:00 to 12:00 [range, 15.4% (27/175) to 20.6% (36/175)]. Among cases with both eyes involved, there were 98 cases of right eyes and 104 cases of left eyes with continuous angle PAS. The clock distribution of the middle position of the right eye angle PAS was concentrated at 11:00 to 3:00 [range, 17.3% (17/98) to 26.5% (26/98)], and that of the left eye was concentrated at 8:00 to 12:00 [range, 13.5% (14/104) to 20.2% (21/104)]. Conclusions: The PAS of PACG patients is mainly located in the upper and nasal sides, and the closer to the temporal side, the smaller the PAS frequency, showing a gradual downward trend. Abstract
The emergence of antibiotics and their corresponding antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have posed great challenges to the public health. The paper demonstrates the removal of co-existing tetracycline (TC), its resistant Escherichia coli (E. coli), and ARGs (tetA and tetR) in a mixed system by applying ferrate(VI) (FeVIO42-, Fe(VI)) at pH 7.0. TC was efficiently degraded by Fe(VI), and the rapid inactivation of the resistant E. coli was found with the complete loss of culturability. The results of flow cytometry suggested that the damage of membrane integrity and respiratory activity were highly correlated with the Fe(VI) dosages. Moreover, high-dose Fe(VI) eliminates 6 log10 viable but non-culturable (VBNC) cells and even breaks the cells into fragments. ARGs in extracellular form (e-ARGs) exhibited a high sensitivity of 4.44 log10 removal to Fe(VI). Comparatively, no removal of intracellular ARGs (i-ARGs) was observed due to the multi-protection of cellular structure and rapid decay of Fe(VI). The oxidized products of TC were assessed to be less toxic than the parent compound. Overall, this study demonstrated the superior efficiency and great promise of Fe(VI) on simultaneous removal of antibiotics and their related ARB and ARGs in water.

Abstract
Aerobic composting is widely used on transforming organic solid waste into proliferating products. However, the removal of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the process of co-composting of food waste with sewage sludge has been rarely reported to date. Therefore, we investigated a laboratory-scale composting using food waste and sewage sludge as substrates to study changes in antibiotics and ARGs during composting. Varying dose of antibiotics were added to allow the evaluation of changes in antibiotics, the microbial community and ARGs. The results revealed that composting effectively removed fluoroquinolones and macrolides, while showed poor efficiency in removing sulfonamides. Results from the 16S rRNA sequencing revealed that Firmicutes dominated on D0, while Proteobacteria and Actinomycetes dominated on D28, and a high concentration of antibiotics affected the microbial succession. The quantitative PCR demonstrated that the abundance of sul3, sulA, qnrB, qnrS, and ermB was reduced after 28 days composting, while an increase in the abundance of sul1, sul2, qnrD, ermC, and ermF was induced by high concentrations of antibiotics. Redundancy analysis revealed that total organic matter was the most important factor for the variation in the ARGs abundance. Overall, our findings indicated that the aerobic co-composting of food waste with sewage sludge can effectively remove antibiotics and ARGs. Our study sheds a new idea light on the strategy for the removal of antibiotics and ARGs from organic solid waste.

Abstract
This study aims to explore the mechanism of cyclic tensile stress (CTS) on human chondrocytes (CHs) relating to the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and extracellular matrix (ECM) stability in vitro. A well-established CTS model with 5%, 10%, or 20% elongation was performed for CHs stretching. After CTS, the cell viability, total ROS level, main ECM components, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP), F-actin density, and some anti-oxidative enzymes were analyzed. Additionally, the antioxidant N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and cytochalasin D were used to suppress the ROS production and F-actin polymerization when the CHs underwent CTS, respectively. The treatment of 20% elongation-CST significantly decreased the CH viability and the expressions of collagen II, aggrecan, anti-oxidative enzymes and TIMP3/4, however, it increased the ROS accumulation, F-actin polymerization, and the expression of collagen I and MMP3/13. In contrast, the application of NAC and cytochalasin D could partly rescue the CHs from the injury caused by the high CTS. Therefore, high CTS disrupts the ECM by remodeling the F-actin cytoskeleton and promoting ROS production. Cytochalasin D and NAC are effective in rejecting F-actin cytoskeleton polymerization, and ROS accumulation through a potential synergetic process, which alleviates the ECM injury caused by High CTS.

Abstract
UV irradiation and chlorination have been widely used for water disinfection. However, there are some limitations, such as the risk of generating viable but nonculturable bacteria and bacteria reactivation when using UV irradiation or chlorination alone. This study comprehensively evaluated the feasibility of the UV/chlorine process in drinking water disinfection, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was selected as the target microorganism. The number of culturable cells was effectively reduced by more than 5 orders of magnitude (5-log10) after UV, chlorine, and UV/chlorine treatments. However, intact and VBNC cells were detected at 103 to 104 cells/mL after UV and chlorine treatments, whereas they were undetectable after UV/chlorine treatment due to the primary contribution of reactive chlorine species (Cl•, Cl2•-, and ClO•). After UV/chlorine treatment, the metabolic activity determined using single cell Raman spectroscopy was much lower than that after UV. The level of toxic opr gene in P. aeruginosa decreased by more than 99% after UV/chlorine treatment. Importantly, bacterial dark reactivation was completely suppressed by UV/chlorine treatment but not UV or chlorination. This study suggests that the UV/chlorine treatment can completely damage bacteria and is promising for pathogen inactivation to overcome the limitations of UV and chlorine treatments alone.

Abstract
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) has been reported to improve bone density and the number of trabeculae in postmenopausal osteoporosis, but the mechanism remains to be elucidated. We aimed to investigate the effects of CoQ10 on receptor activator of NF-κB ligand (RANKL)-induced osteoclastogenesis and the underlying molecular mechanisms. RAW264.7 cells were treated with different concentrations of RANKL to differentiate into osteoclasts, and then these cells were treated with different concentrations of CoQ10 with or without H2 O2 . Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase staining was performed to detect osteoclasts. Cell viability was tested by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay, cell apoptosis was examined by flow cytometry, and the effects of CoQ10 on protein and messenger RNA expression of mitochondrial apoptosis-associated proteins and osteoclast marker proteins were measured by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and western blot, respectively. Furthermore, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was conducted to analyze the activities of malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT). RANKL significantly induced osteoclastogenesis in RAW264.7 cells, with the greatest efficiency at 50 ng/ml. CoQ10 had no significant effects on cell viability but it significantly increased the percentages of cell apoptosis. Mechanically, CoQ10 statistically decreased the levels of Bcl-2 and cytochrome C in mitochondria and upregulated the levels of Bax, cleaved caspase 3, and cytochrome C in the cytoplasm. Moreover, CoQ10 significantly decreased RANKL-induced osteoclastogenesis regardless of exposure to H2 O2 . In addition, CoQ10 statistically reduced MDA activity and elevated the activities of SOD and CAT, as well as the expression of oxidative stress-related proteins. CoQ10 may inhibit RANKL-induced osteoclastogenesis by regulation of mitochondrial apoptosis and oxidative stress in RAW264.7 cells.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the quality of life of patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and its related factors in Wenzhou. Methods: Cross-sectional analysis. A total of 339 POAG patients diagnosed in the Wenzhou glaucoma progression study conducted in the Eye Hospital, School of Ophthalmology and Optometry, Wenzhou Medical University from March 2014 to October 2019 were included. Quality of life of POAG patients was assessed by EQ-5D including the visual analogue scale (VAS). The effects of gender, age, visual field loss (VFL), family history of glaucoma, hypertension, diabetes, migraine, sleep quality, and amateur exercise on the quality of life were analyzed. The utility value (UV) and VAS score were expressed as the median (P25, P75), and Mann-Whitney U was used for the comparison between two groups. Kruskal-Wallis H was performed to compare the differences among multiple groups. Results: A total of 339 POAG patients were included in the study; 164 were males (48.4%), and 175 were females (51.6%). The mean age was (63±10) years. Thirty-four patients (10.0%) had received medication (including one with combined surgical treatment), while the remaining 305 patients (90.0%) had received no anti-glaucoma treatment. Among the patients, 10.5% (32/305) had no VFL, 68.9% (210/305) had mild VFL, 17.0% (52/305) had moderate VFL, and 3.6% (11/305) had severe VFL. In all patients, the median of UV was 1.000 (1.000, 1.000), the mean of UV was 0.964, and the median of VAS score was 80 (75, 90), the mean of VAS score was 81.58. Anxiety or depression and pain or discomfort occurred in 45.7% (43/94) and 34.1% (32/94), respectively, of POAG patients with decreased UVs, as well as mobility constraints in 13.8 % (13/94) and usual activity constraints in 6.4% (6/94). The median of UV of the eye with a better visual field in the group without VFL or with mild or moderate VFL was 1.000 (1.000, 1.000), and in the group with severe VFL was 1.000 (0.862, 1.000), but there was no significant difference in the UV and the VAS score of the eye with a better visual field among groups with different degrees of VFL (both P>0.05). There was statistically significant difference in the UV among groups with different sleep qualities (H=17.465; P<0.01). Using pairwise comparison, the median of UV of the very good sleep group was 1.000 (1.000, 1.000), significantly different to the slightly poor sleep group 1.000 (0.866, 1.000) (z=3.613; P<0.05). The median of UV in patients with migraine was 1.000 (0.875, 1.000), without migraine 1.000 (1.000, 1.000), and in patients with hypertension was 1.000 (0.875, 1.000), without hypertension 1.000 (1.000, 1.000), and in patients with diabetes was 1.000 (0.875, 1.000), without diabetes was 1.000 (1.000, 1.000), the difference was statistically significant (Z=-2.189, -3.864, -2.417; all P<0.05). The UV was not related to age, gender, family history of glaucoma, amateur exercise, alcohol and tobacco, and history of anti-glaucoma medication (all P>0.05). Conclusions: VFL is related to the UV of POAG patients in Wenzhou. Quality of life in mild POAG patients is good but decrease in advanced POAG patients. Sleep quality, systemic complications and physical or psychological discomfort impact on quality of life in POAG patients. (Chin J Ophthalmol, 2021, 57: 207-214).

Abstract
Viable but non-culturable (VBNC) bacteria have attracted widespread attention since they are inherently undetected by traditional culture-dependent methods. Importantly, VBNC bacteria could resuscitate under favorable conditions leading to significant public health concerns. Although the total number of viable bacteria has been theorized to be far greater than those that can be cultured, there have been no reports quantifying VBNC pathogenic bacteria in full-scale drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs). In this work, we used both culture-dependent and quantitative PCR combination with propidium monoazide (PMA) dye approaches to characterize cellular viability. Further, we established a method to quantify viable pathogens by relating specific gene copies to viable cell numbers. Ratios of culturable bacteria to viable 16S rRNA gene copies in water and biological activated carbon (BAC) biofilms were 0-4.75% and 0.04-56.24%, respectively. The VBNC E. coli, E. faecalis, P. aeruginosa, Salmonella sp., and Shigella sp. were detected at levels of 0-103 cells/100 mL in source water, 0-102 cells/100 mL in chlorinated water, and 0-103 cells/g in BAC biofilms. In addition, differences between the total and viable community structures after ozonation and chlorination were investigated. The relative abundance of opportunistic pathogens such as Mycobacterium, Sphingomonas, etc. increased in final water, likely due to their chlorine resistance. In summary, we detected significant quantities of viable/VBNC opportunistic pathogens in full-scale DWTPs, confirming that traditional, culture-dependent methods are inadequate for detecting VBNC bacteria. These findings suggest a need to develop and implement rapid, accurate methods for the detection of VBNC pathogenic bacteria in DWTPs to ensure the safety of drinking water.

Abstract
Biological activated carbon (BAC) filtration, a process widely used in drinking water treatment, was recently reported to harbor antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). This emerging contamination is poorly understood. This study was conducted to investigate the occurrence of ARGs and bacterial community in full-scale BAC filters during the backwash cycle using high-throughput qPCR and high-throughput sequencing. A total of 178 ARGs were detected in all biofilm samples, with relative abundance ranging from 0.1 to 1.37 copies per 16S rRNA and absolute abundance ranging from 4.48 × 107 to 3.09 × 109 copies/g carbon. Biofilms sampled from different filters shared most detected ARGs and dominant genera including Bryobacter, Pedomicrobium, Reyranella, and Terrimonas, though their bacterial community structure differed significantly. After backwashing, the relative ARGs abundance increased by 1.5- to 3.8-folds and the absolute ARGs abundance increased by 0.90- to 1.12-logs in all biofilm samples during filter ripening, indicating that ARGs accumulated in filters during this period. Redundancy analysis suggested that such ARGs accumulation was mainly driven by horizontal gene transfer in winter, but highly correlated with the increasing relative abundance of genera Bryobacter and Acidibacter in summer. It was observed that 80.6 %-89.3% of the detected ARGs persisted in the filters despite of the backwashing. Given the high richness and relative abundance of ARGs in BAC filter and the ineffectiveness of backwashing in ARG removal, more stringent downstream disinfection strategies are deserved and more research is necessary to assess potential human health risks due to the persistence of ARGs in drinking water.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of antibiotics on environmental factors, hydrolase activity, and microbial community during aerobic co-composting of food waste and sewage sludge. The results showed that 5 mg/kg of antibiotics decreased cellulase activity and increased lipase and proteinase activity, while 20 mg/kg of antibiotics also decreased cellulase activity and increased the contents of Zn, Cu, and Hg. The dominant bacterial genera of the four treatment groups were Enterococcus, Pseudomonas, Idiomarina, Lactobacillus, and Bacillus. The addition of antibiotics affected the succession of microbial community structure. Microbial communities treated with 5 mg/kg antibiotics had the highest in diversity, while those treated with 20 mg/kg antibiotics had the lowest in richness. Redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that the pH and temperature were the most important environmental factors that affected microbial community succession, followed by total nitrogen and moisture content during co-composting of food waste and sewage sludge.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE These were two folds: at first, to develop an automatic grading system specifically dedicated to some facial signs of men, similar to the one previously validated on women of different ethnic ancestry and second, to assess its potential in detecting and grading the possible impacts of a severe aerial urban pollution on some facial signs of Chinese men. METHODS In both studies, selfie images were obtained from differently aged men. Nine facial signs were automatically graded through a specific A.I-based algorithm and clinically assessed by a panel of experts and dermatologists. Selfie pictures were taken from individual smartphones of variable optical properties. The first study, designed for developing an automatic grading system, involved three comparable cohorts of men from three different regional ancestries (African, Asian, Caucasian, 110 each) the selfie images of which were acquired under four different lighting conditions. As a second use case study, the facial signs of two cohorts of Chinese men (101 and 100, each), differently aged, regularly exposed to very different aerial urban pollution conditions (UP) were analysed by the same algorithm, selfies being taken under only one lighting condition. RESULTS -The new automatic grading system of facial signs suits well to men, showing comparable results than that the one dedicated to women and provides data in close agreement with experts' assessments. -In both cases (expert's or automatic methodology), the accuracy of the scores appeared ethnic-dependent. -The applied case confirmed previous results obtained clinically, that is, that many facial signs were found of an increased severity among men exposed to a severe urban pollution, as compared to those living in a less polluted city. -In both studies, statistical agreements between the automatic grading system and expert's assessments were reached. In some facial signs, the automatic grading system seems offering a slightly better accuracy than the assessments made by the experts. CONCLUSION Apart from some minor limitations, this A.I-based automatic grading system, free from human intervention, performed as well as the one previously developed in women, in close agreement with expert's assessments. In epidemiological studies, this system offers an easy, fast, affordable and confidential approach in the detection and quantification of male facial signs.
