Defects engineering of bimetallic Ni-based catalysts for electrochemical energy conversion

Bimetallic MOF-Derived Solar-Triggered Monolithic Adsorbent for Enhanced Atmospheric Water Harvesting

The development of economical, energy-saving, and efficient metal-organic framework (MOF)-based adsorbents for atmospheric water collection is highly imperative for the rapid advancement of renewable freshwater resource exploitation. Herein, a feasible one-step solvothermal formation strategy of bimetallic MOF (BMOF) is proposed and applied to construct a solar-triggered monolithic adsorbent for enhanced atmospheric water collection. Benefiting from the reorganization and adjustment of topology structure by Al atoms and Fe atoms, the resultant BMOF(3) consisting of Al-fumarate and MIL-88A has a higher specific surface area (1202.99 m2  g-1 ) and pore volume (0.51 cm3  g-1 ), thereby outperforming the parental MOFs and other potential MOFs in absorbing water. Expanding upon this finding, the solar-triggered monolithic adsorbent is further developed through a bottom-up assembly of polyaniline/chitosan layers and hybridized BMOF(3) skeletons on a glass fiber support. The resultant monolithic adsorbent exhibits superior sorption-desorption kinetics, leading to directional water transport and rapid solar-assisted vapor diffusion. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, an exquisite water harvester is constructed to emphasize a high water yield of 1.19 g g-1 per day of the designed monolithic adsorbent. Therefore, the design and validation of bimetallic MOF-derived solar-triggered adsorbent in this work are expected to provide a reference for the large-scale applications of MOF-based atmospheric water harvesting.

Dealloying Synthesis of Bimetallic (Au-Pd)/CeO2 Catalysts for CO Oxidation

The nanorod-structured (Au-Pd)/CeO₂ catalysts with different Au/Pd ratios were prepared from Al-Ce-Au-Pd precursor alloys through combined dealloying and calcination treatment. XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, Raman spectroscopy, and N₂ adsorption-desorption measurements were applied to test the structure and physicochemical properties of samples. Catalytic evaluation results imply that the (Pd_0.15-Au_0.15)/CeO₂ catalyst calcined at 500 °C possesses optimal catalytic activity for CO oxidation when compared with other catalysts with different Au/Pd ratios or (Pd_0.15-Au_0.15)/CeO₂ calcined at other temperatures, whose 50% and 99% reaction temperature can be reached as low as 50 and 85 °C, respectively. This superior catalytic property is attributed to their robust nanorod structure and the introduction of noble bimetal Pd and Au, which can construct a nanoscale interface to access fast electron motion, thus enhancing catalytic efficiency.

Oriented interlayered charge transfer in NiCoFe layered double hydroxide/MoO3 stacked heterostructure promoting the oxygen-evolving behavior

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the rate-limiting half reaction of water electrolysis, plays as a crucial role in improving the overall efficiency of the coupled hydrogen evolution. To date, earth-abundant OER catalysts have been extensively studied, while unfortunately their catalytic activity and operational stability still need to be further optimized. In this work, we fabricated a highly efficient OER catalyst based on two-dimensional (2D) NiCoFe layered double hydroxide (LDH)/MoO₃ stacked heterostructure with enriched active sites and optimal electronic structure via an electrostatic-driven self-assembly process. The rough surface of the 2D heterostructure could offer abundant reactive sites for the pre-oxidation reaction, thereby leading to fast generation of the high-valence active species for OER, and the multi-metal synergy and oriented interlayered charge transfer could further enhance the intrinsic OER activity, finally resulting in enhanced OER performance with low overpotential, large current density, high intrinsic activity and excellent operational stability.

Recent advances in the pre-oxidation process in electrocatalytic urea oxidation reactions

The electrocatalytic urea oxidation reaction (UOR) has attracted substantial research interests over the past few years owing to its critical role in coupled electrochemical systems for energy conversion, for example, coupling with the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to realize urea-assisted hydrogen production and assembling direct urea fuel cells (DUFC) by coupling with the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The UOR process has been proved to be a two-step process which involves an electrochemical pre-oxidation reaction of the metal sites and a subsequent chemical oxidation of the urea molecules on the as-formed high-valence metal sites. Hence, designing advanced (pre-)catalysts with a boosted pre-oxidation reaction is of great importance in improving the UOR performance and thus accelerating the coupled reactions. In this feature article, we discuss the significant role of the pre-oxidation process during the urea electro-oxidation reaction, and summarize detailed strategies and recent advances in promoting the pre-oxidation reaction, including the modulation of the crystallinity, active phase engineering, defect engineering, elemental incorporation and constructing hierarchical nanostructures. We anticipate that this feature article will offer helpful guidance for the design and optimization of advanced (pre-)catalysts for UOR and related energy conversion applications.

3D Printing of Black Bioceramic Scaffolds with Micro/Nanostructure for Bone Tumor-Induced Tissue Therapy

It is common to improve the relevant performance in the field of energy storage materials or catalytic materials by regulating the number of defects. However, there are few studies on the biomaterials containing defects for tissue engineering. Herein, a new type of defect-rich scaffolds, black akermanite (B-AKT) bioceramic scaffolds with micro/nanostructure, the thickness of which is from 0.14 to 1.94 µm, is fabricated through introducing defects on the surface of bioceramic scaffolds. The B-AKT scaffolds have advantages on the degradation rate and the osteogenic capacity over the AKT (Ca₂ MgSi₂ O₇ ) scaffolds due to the surface defects which stimulate the osteogenic differentiation of rabbit bone mesenchymal stem cells via activating bone morphogenetic protein 2 （BMP2） signaling pathway and further promote bone formation in vivo. In addition, the prepared B-AKT scaffolds, the temperature of which can be over 100 °C under the near infrared （NIR） irradiation (0.66 W cm^-2 ), possess excellent performance on photothermal and antitumor effects. The work develops an introducing-defect strategy for regulating the biological performance of bioceramic scaffolds, which is expected to be applied in the next generation of bioceramic scaffolds for regenerative medicine.

Plant polyphenols induced the synthesis of rich oxygen vacancies Co3O4/Co@N-doped carbon hollow nanomaterials for electrochemical energy storage and conversion

Reasonable hollow structure design and oxygen vacancy defects control play an important role in the optimization of electrochemical energy storage and electrocatalytic properties. Herein, a plant polyphenol tannic acid was used to etch Co-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) followed by calcination to prepare a porous Co₃O₄@Co/NC hollow nanoparticles (Co₃O₄@Co/NC-HN) with rich oxygen vacancy defects. Owing to the metal-phenolic networks (MPNs), rich oxygen vacancy defects and the synergistic effect between Co₃O₄ and Co/NC, the box-like Co₃O₄@Co/NC-HN nanomaterials with large specific surface areas exhibit excellent supercapacitor performance and electrocatalytic activity. As expected, Co₃O₄@Co/NC-HN shows high specific capacity (273.9 mAh g^-1 at 1 A g^-1) and remarkable rate performance. Moreover, the assembled Hybrid supercapacitor (HSC, Co₃O₄@Co/NC-HN//Active carbon) device obtained a maximum energy density of 57.8 Wh kg^-1 (800 W kg^-1) and exhibited superior cycle stability of 92.6% after 4000 cycles. Notably, as an electrocatalyst, the nanocomposites exhibit small overpotential and Tafel slope. These results strongly demonstrate that both unique hollow structure and abundant oxygen vacancies designed from plant polyphenols provide superiorities for the synthesis of efficient and green multifunctional electrode materials for energy storage and conversion.

In Situ Construction of Flexible VNi Redox Centers over Ni-Based MOF Nanosheet Arrays for Electrochemical Water Oxidation

Atomic-level design and construction of synergistic active centers are central to develop advanced oxygen electrocatalysts toward efficient energy conversion. Herein, an in situ construction strategy to introduce flexible redox sites of VNi centers onto Ni-based metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheet arrays (NiV-MOF NAs) as a promising oxygen electrocatalyst is developed. The abundant redox VNi centers with flexible metal valence states of V^+3/+4/+5 and Ni^+3/+2 enable NiV-MOF NAs excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity and a long-term stability under high current densities, achieving current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm^-2 at recorded overpotentials of 189 and 290 mV, respectively, and showing ignorable decay of initial activity at 100 mA cm^-2 after 100 h OER operation. Operando synchrotron radiation Fourier transform infrared combined with quasi in situ X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopies reveal at atomic level that the flexible V sites can continuously accept electrons from adjacent active Ni sites to accelerate OER kinetics for NiV-MOF NAs during the reaction process, accompanied by a self-optimized structural distortion of VO₆ octahedron for promoting the electrochemical stability.

Co/Ni-polyoxotungstate photocatalysts as precursor materials for electrocatalytic water oxidation

An open-core cobalt polyoxometalate (POM) [(A-α-SiW9O34)Co4(OH)3(CH3COO)3]8-Co(1) and its isostructural Co/Ni-analogue [(A-α-SiW9O34)Co1.5Ni2.5(OH)3(CH3COO)3]8-CoNi(2) were synthesized and investigated for their photocatalytic and electrocatalytic performance. Co(1) shows high photocatalytic O2 yields, which are competitive with leading POM water oxidation catalysts (WOCs). Furthermore, Co(1) and CoNi(2) were employed as well-defined precursors for heterogeneous WOCs. Annealing at various temperatures afforded amorphous and crystalline CoWO4- and Co1.5Ni2.5WO4-related nanoparticles. CoWO4-related particles formed at 300 °C showed substantial electrocatalytic improvements and were superior to reference materials obtained from co-precipitation/annealing routes. Interestingly, no synergistic interactions between cobalt and nickel centers were observed for the mixed-metal POM precursor and the resulting tungstate catalysts. This stands in sharp contrast to a wide range of studies on various heterogeneous catalyst types which were notably improved through Co/Ni substitution. The results clearly demonstrate that readily accessible POMs are promising precursors for the convenient and low-temperature synthesis of amorphous heterogeneous water oxidation catalysts with enhanced performance compared to conventional approaches. This paves the way to tailoring polyoxometalates as molecular precursors with tuneable transition metal cores for high performance heterogeneous electrocatalysts. Our results furthermore illustrate the key influence of the synthetic history on the performance of oxide catalysts and highlight the dependence of synergistic metal interactions on the structural environment.

Current trends and perspectives on emerging Fe-derived noble-metal-free oxygen electrocatalysts

This article discusses recent progress in the development of Fe-derived noble metal-free electrocatalysts, including the strategies used for design, synthesis, and assessment of their performance in alkaline conditions.

Synthesis and Optimization of Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Metal-organic frameworks/zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (MOFs/ZIFs) and their post-synthesis modified nanostructures, such as oxides, hydroxides, and carbons have generated significant interest for electrocatalytic reactions. In this work, a high and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance directly from bimetallic Zn_100-x Co_x -ZIF samples is reported, without carrying out high-temperature calcination and/or carbonization. ZIFs can be reproducibly and readily synthesized in large scale at ambient conditions. The bimetallic ZIFs show a systematic and gradually improved OER activity with increasing cobalt concentration. A further increase in OER activity is evidenced in ZIF-67 polyhedrons with controlled particle size of <200 nm among samples of different sizes between 50 nm and 2 μm. Building on this, a significantly enhanced, >50 %, OER activity is obtained with ZIF-67/carbon black, which shows a low overpotential of approximately 320 mV in 1.0 m KOH electrolyte. Such activity is comparable to or better than numerous MOF/ZIF-derived electrocatalysts. The optimized ZIF-67 sample also exhibits increased activity and durability over 24 h, which is attributed to an in situ developed active cobalt oxide/oxyhydroxide related nanophase.
