Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate parental reports of anxiety and depression in typically developing school-aged children with and without siblings with special health care needs (SHCNs). The study also examined how the age gap between siblings impacts anxiety and depression levels. METHOD This cross-sectional study involved 242 parents of children aged 8 to 12 years, including 133 parents of children with a SHCN. Data were collected using the Parent Version of the Revised Children's Anxiety and Depression Scale. RESULTS Children with a sibling with a SHCN had higher anxiety and depression levels than those without. However, the sibling age gap did not influence these mental health outcomes. CONCLUSION Findings emphasize the importance of nurses and health care professionals assessing children's mental well-being and the need for preventive interventions to help manage stress. Abstract
Adolescence is a window of vulnerability for the development of anxiety disorders but also a window of opportunity for treatments to minimize the long-term impact of such disorders. Current first-line treatments, primarily exposure-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), have limited long-term efficacy in adolescents. The urgent need for more effective interventions is underscored by the frequent reports of extinction impairments in adolescents as well as the rising anxiety rates in youth, particularly post-COVID-19. Preclinical research on the extinction of learned fear in adolescents may contribute to developing better treatment approaches to anxiety in this age group. Unfortunately, this is still a largely under-explored area. However, both pharmacological and behavioral augmentation strategies can be used to enhance extinction learning and consolidation. Here we describe work exploring such adjuncts, focusing on pre-clinical work with rodents. Much of the research to date shows striking developmental differences in response to various pharmacological treatments, with only a few shown to be effective in adolescents. Further, recent experience of stress reduces the efficacy of these treatments in adolescence. This review highlights the necessity for tailored strategies, especially when it comes to pharmacological adjuncts, that address developmental differences in drug responses as well as the impact of stressful experiences on treatment efficacy.

Abstract
Studies indicate the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in rises in adolescent mental health symptoms globally, although the impact of the pandemic on subjective wellbeing is under-researched in this population. Psychological capital (PsyCap), a cluster of four positive psychological constructs comprising hope, efficacy, resilience and optimism (HERO), has demonstrated preventative and promotive qualities on mental health symptoms and subjective wellbeing outcomes with adult populations (employees, university students). However, PsyCap's influence on these outcomes in young people is unclear. The present exploratory study investigated changes in self-reported anxiety and depressive symptoms (measured via the RCADS-SV) and subjective wellbeing (measured by the Flourishing Scale) from pre-pandemic levels to 3 months into the pandemic and explored gender differences at each time point in a sample of Australian Year 10 students (N = 56, Mage = 14.93 years, SD = 0.50, 51.8% male). The longitudinal predictive role of baseline PsyCap on follow-up assessments of anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms and flourishing were also examined. There were no significant changes in levels of anxiety and depressive symptoms between the timepoints, but flourishing significantly declined from T1 to T2. Baseline PsyCap was not a significant predictor of T2 anxiety and depressive symptoms but was a significant predictor of T2 flourishing. Further, different baseline HERO constructs predicted T2 mental health symptoms and flourishing. Future larger studies building on the current preliminary findings investigating the roles of student PsyCap, mental health and subjective wellbeing are warranted to better understand these constructs in the COVID-19 era and beyond.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rising rates of anxiety among teens necessitate innovative approaches for implementing evidence-based mental health support. Public libraries, seen as safe spaces for patrons with marginalized identities, offer free public services such as broadband internet access. Many teens spend significant amounts of time in their local libraries due to the safety of this space as well as the trusted adults working there. The American Library Association has shifted its priorities to focus more on mental health through employing social workers and providing mental health programs. As such, public libraries may be promising sites for the implementation of digital mental health (DMH) programs for teens. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to examine how teens who attended their local public library experienced and managed their anxiety, what mental health supports they were interested in receiving, and how DMH programs and public libraries can meet their needs. METHODS We interviewed 16 teens aged 12-18 (mean 15.2, SD 2.0) years who used the library frequently at the time of the interviews. Of these teen patrons, 56% (9/16) identified as female, 31% (5/16) identified as male, and 12% (2/16) identified as nonbinary. Most (11/16, 69%) identified as either White or Black or African American individuals, with the remainder (5/16, 31%) identifying as Hispanic or Latino or Chinese American individuals or with ≥2 races. The interviews were individual and semistructured, designed to elicit recommendations for designing and implementing digital tools in libraries to improve teen mental health. Interview transcripts were coded by multiple coders using thematic analysis to synthesize key themes. RESULTS Teens reported experiencing uncontrollability, unpredictability, and anger related to their anxiety, which they managed using strategies such as guided breathing, distress tolerance, and social connection. They also talked about other helpful management techniques (eg, progressive muscle relaxation, journaling, and mood tracking). Teens underscored the importance of pairing mood tracking with daily activities to reveal patterns. They also stressed the significance of context and anxiety severity when choosing anxiety management strategies. Teens underscored the centrality of the public library in their lives and their view of it as a safe space where they can easily access resources and connect with friends and trusted adults. When considering the design of a DMH program implemented in libraries, they suggested including personalization for different identities, gamification, and simple navigation. Teens emphasized the importance of protecting their privacy within digital programs and that their end goal was to use the skills learned in the DMH program offline. CONCLUSIONS Teens who frequently used their local public library expressed interest in receiving digital tools via libraries to help them manage anxiety. Their recommendations will help inform future research on the adaptation and implementation of DMH programs for teens in public libraries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of anxiety among adolescents has seen a notable increase in recent years, becoming a significant public health concern. In fact, anxiety is substantially more prevalent in Generation Z (individuals born between 1997 and 2012) than in any of the past three generations. We aimed to examine what factors contribute to the increased prevalence in teen anxiety and identify points of intervention. METHODS This study employed a narrative review method. We performed a literature search of the PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Medline databases and identified original research and review articles discussing increased anxiety and other mental health disorders in Generation Z. RESULTS We provide a comprehensive overview of the factors contributing to the increased rates of adolescent anxiety, including academic pressures, social media influence, family dynamics, and broader societal stressors. CONCLUSIONS In this narrative review, we examine the multifaceted nature of adolescent anxiety, identifying contributing factors. Additionally, we discuss potential clinical, educational, and community-based interventions to prevent and treat adolescent anxiety. By understanding and addressing the underlying causes of anxiety, it is possible to mitigate its impact and promote healthier developmental trajectories for young individuals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this scoping review is to identify strategies from existing literature, for school-based professionals to share with parents, that may be used on a family-level to help the recovery from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on pediatric mental health. DATA SOURCE This scoping review consists of a comprehensive PubMed, CINAHL, and Google Scholar database search. STUDY INCLUSION AND EXCLUSION CRITERIA Studies published between 2020 and 2023 that were written in English, originated in the United States, and evaluated pediatric mental health in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic were considered for inclusion in the scoping review. DATA EXTRACTION AND DATA SYNTHESIS One researcher independently conducted the PubMed, CINAHL, and Google Scholar literature search. Subsequently, results were reviewed independently by two additional researchers. RESULTS Title and abstract review were conducted for 2563 articles. After excluding studies not written in English, studies with international origin, and studies which were not relevant to this scoping review, 101 studies remained for full-text review. After full-text review, 32 studies (31.68%) were deemed relevant and concordant with the inclusion criteria and were included in this scoping review. We identified five prominent themes: 1) maintaining daily life and routines, 2) the importance of physical activity and the pandemic's effect on student athletes' mental health, 3) the use of screen time, 4) the effect of parent and caregiver stress on their children's mental health, and 5) the effect of pandemic-related health disparities and racism on pediatric mental health. DISCUSSION This scoping review focused on interventions and practices which can be implemented at the family level to help children and adolescents recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on their mental health.

Abstract
Background Anxiety disorders is a significant contributor to the Global Burden of Diseases (GBD), particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has exacerbated the issue. Previous studies have not examined the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on anxiety disorders over the entire time series, nor have they offered predictions regarding future trends of global anxiety disorders in the aftermath of the pandemic. This study aims to present the Age-Standardized Prevalence Rates (ASPR), Age-Standardized Incidence Rates (ASIR), and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) associated with anxiety disorders from 1990 to 2021 across 204 countries and regions, emphasizing the age structure and the disease burden following the pandemic. Additionally, it examines the relationship between the burden of anxiety disorders and the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as trend predictions for the incidence of anxiety disorders from 2022 to 2050. Methods We analysed data from the GBD 2021 study, employed the GBD method to integrate epidemiological data on ASPR, ASIR, and DALYs to accurately assess the global burden of anxiety disorders across various regions, genders, and age groups. Additionally, joint point regression analysis was applied to rigorously examine the time trends of anxiety disorders from 1990 to 2021, calculating the annual percentage change (APC), annual average percentage change (AAPC), and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Furthermore, path analysis was utilized to investigate the impact pathways between the COVID-19 pandemic and anxiety disorders. Finally, a Bayesian age-period-cohort (BAPC) model was employed to predict the prevalence trends of anxiety disorders from 2022 to 2050. Findings From 1990 to 2021, the ASPR, ASIR, and DALYs associated with anxiety disorders worldwide exhibited a significant upward trend, particularly evident from 2019 to 2021, during which all three metrics experienced a sharp increase. The most pronounced changes in the burden of anxiety disorders from 2019 to 2021 were observed in high socio-demographic index (SDI) regions, where the ASIR surpassed expected levels in tropical Latin America, high-income North America, and Australia in 2021. Bulgaria recorded the highest increase in anxiety disorders burden during this period, with a change rate of 0.32, while Bhutan experienced the smallest increase, with a total change rate of 0.02. Notably, the global anxiety disorders burden among women is greater than that among men. From 2019 to 2021, women aged 20-24 years were particularly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with a change rate of 0.21. Additionally, the ASIR of COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 had a significant positive correlation with the prevalence of anxiety disorders, standardized path coefficient value of 0.224 (z = 2.708, P < 0.01). Projections indicate that by 2050, the number of individuals affected by anxiety disorders may reach 87.36 million (95% UI: 59.28-115.44). It is also anticipated that the prevalence of anxiety disorders among the 15-19 age group will exceed that of other age groups by 2050. Interpretation The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the future burden of anxiety disorders, necessitating greater attention towards young individuals, particularly women. There is an urgent need for the adoption of targeted prevention and treatment strategies on a global scale, especially in high SDI regions, to effectively address the escalating issue of anxiety disorder burden. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Dyslexia is a widespread Specific Learning Difficulty, and children with dyslexia often face significant psychological difficulties due to their challenges with reading, spelling, and writing. Objective This study examines the psychological functioning of children with dyslexia and compares it with typically developing children. METHOD This cross-sectional study used the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) to evaluate behavioral issues and the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) to assess anxiety levels. Primary school teachers, who had known the children for at least a year, provided the reports. Data were analyzed using an independent sample t-test. RESULTS Forty children with dyslexia (n = 40) and fifty typically developing children (n = 50) were assessed, in which both groups are predominantly boys (70%, 54%) aged 7-12 years (Mean age:9.3 ± 1.5). The results indicate a significantly greater degree of behavioural problems t(88) = 8.39,p < 0.001 among children with dyslexia compared to typically developing children. They also had higher level of anxiety t(88) = 6.81,p < 0.001 compared to typically developing children. CONCLUSION The findings highlight a strong connection between emotional and behavioral issues in children with dyslexia. Generally, these children are more prone to depression, anxiety, and disruptive behaviors compared to their peers. The study underscores the importance of a multidisciplinary approach that integrates emotional needs assessment and management into the interventions for children with dyslexia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are many articles reporting that the component of intestinal microbiota implies a link to anxiety disorders (AD), and the brain-gut axis is also a hot topic in current research. However, the specific relevance between gut microbiota and AD is uncertain. We aimed to investigate causal relationship between gut microbiota and AD by using bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR). METHODS Genetic instrumental variable (IV) for the gut microbiota were obtained from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) involving 18,340 participants. Summary data for AD were derived from the GWAS and included 158,565 cases and 300,995 controls. We applied the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method as the main analysis. Cochran's Q values was computed to evaluate the heterogeneity among IVs. Sensitivity analyses including intercept of MR-Egger method and MR-PRESSO analysis were used to test the horizontal pleiotropy. RESULT We discovered 9 potential connections between bacterial traits on genus level and AD. Utilizing the IVW method, we identified 5 bacterial genera that exhibited a direct correlation with the risk of AD: genus Eubacteriumbrachygroup, genus Coprococcus3, genus Enterorhabdus, genus Oxalobacter, genus Ruminiclostridium6. Additionally, we found 4 bacterial genera that exhibited a negative association with AD: genus Blautia, genus Butyricicoccus, genus Erysipelotrichaceae-UCG003 and genus Parasutterella. The associations were confirmed by the sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSION Our study found a causal relation between parts of the gut microbiota and AD. Further randomized controlled trials are crucial to elucidate the positive effects of probiotics on AD and their particular protection systems.

Abstract
Although research has confirmed that the first COVID-19-related lockdown has increased stress and mental health problems in children, less is known about the longer-term effects of the pandemic on children's COVID-related future anxiety (CRFA). Because of CRFA's potentially debilitating effects, risk and resilience factors against this anxiety were investigated. To this end, n = 140 children (49% female) in 3rd and 4th grade classrooms in Germany were asked to perform a working memory task and to self-report about their CRFA and emotion regulation in December 2020 and in May 2021. More maladaptive emotion regulation in December 2020 contributed to the explanation of a high CRFA score in May 2021, whereas a better performance on working memory updating contributed a lower CRFA score later when controls were in place. These results were confirmed when children's CRFA in December 2020 was included in the prediction of their later CRFA. They suggest that maladaptive strategies of emotion regulation, such as rumination, may explain higher or increasing levels of CRFA, whereas efficient working memory updating may be an indicator of processing information in a way which shields children from CRFA-related thoughts. The concepts underlying these variables should be included in prevention and intervention efforts.

Abstract
Anxiety and depression among young people had already increased in the years before the COVID-19 pandemic and then experienced a significant increase again during the pandemic. In this article the different clinical forms of expression of these emotional syndromes are presented in detail and the developmental paths of a combination of both disorders are also explained. Even subclinical forms of anxiety and depression already have clear clinical implications and impair the developmental tasks of adolescence. The "avolitional depression" (depression with severe drive disorders) is mentioned as a special form. Pathogenetic building blocks-from genetic vulnerability to psychosocial stressors-come up for discussion in light of the fact that anxiety and depression are about twice as common in adolescent females as in males. The embedding of the disorders in current events shows the special importance of the self-reflective emotion of shame in the adolescent development process. The scarcity and dysfunctionality of emotional dialogue between significant caregivers and children must be cautioned against. Its role in adolescents' self-regulation and affect regulation should not be underestimated. Finally, an overview of the most important therapeutic measures for anxiety and depression in adolescence is presented.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescence is a crucial phase for early intervention and prevention of mental health problems. Casual video games are popular and have promise as a novel mechanism for reaching young people, but this potential has seldom been explored. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore the acceptability, feasibility, and possible indicators of therapeutic changes after playing a purpose-built novel casual video game (Match Emoji) with simple mental health and well-being content among young adolescents. METHODS We conducted a single-arm, nonrandomized trial of Match Emoji with 12- to 14-year-old school students (N=45; 26 [57%] New Zealand European, 12 [26%] Māori; 7 [15%] Asian or Pacific; 27 [60%] boys, 3 [6%] non-binary). Participants were invited to play Match Emoji for 15 minutes, 2-3 times a week over 2 weeks (a total of 60 minutes). Acceptability was assessed through the frequency and duration of use (analytics analyzed at the end of the 2-week intervention period and at weeks 4 and 6) and through participant reports. The Child and Adolescent Mindfulness Measure (CAMM), General Help-Seeking Questionnaire (GHSQ), Flourishing Scale (FS), and Revised Children's Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS) were assessed at baseline and week 2 to indicate possible effects. Focus groups were held in week 4. RESULTS Most participants (n=39, 87%) used Match Emoji for at least 60 minutes over the 2-week intervention, with 80% (36/45) continuing to play the game after the intervention period. Mean change (from baseline to 2 weeks) on each measure was 1.38 (95% CI -0.03 to 2.79; P=.06) for CAMM; 0.8 (95% CI -2.71 to 4.31; P=.64) for GHSQ; -1.09 (95% CI -2.83 to 0.66; P=.21) for FS; and -3.42 (95% CI -6.84 to -0.001; P=0.49) for RCADS. Focus group feedback suggested that Match Emoji was enjoyable and helpful. CONCLUSIONS The casual video game with mental health content appeared to be acceptable and provided a promising indication of possible therapeutic effects. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The study's primary aim was to compare the utilization rates of services by minors with depression/anxiety in a county mental health clinic before (from December 1, 2019, to March 15, 2020) and during the COVID-19 pandemic (from March 16 to June 30, 2020). The secondary aim was to study demographics and psychiatric symptomatology. METHODS Service utilization rates were estimated. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression was used to identify significant predictors of worsening psychiatric symptoms, anxiety, and change in the frequency of therapy between the pre-COVID-19 period and the COVID-19 period. RESULTS Service utilization rates increased during the pandemic period. During the pandemic, the presence of mood symptoms, suicidal ideation, and relationship conflicts predicted worsening psychiatric symptoms. In addition, the presence of preexisting sleep problems and physical health issues that continued during COVID-19 exhibited correlations with worsening psychiatric symptoms during COVID-19. COVID-related stressors and physical health issues were associated with anxiety; suicidal ideation predicted a change in the frequency of therapy. CONCLUSIONS Prospective studies to recognize risk factors for worsening mental health in minors with psychiatric illness during a crisis are warranted to identify and allocate services to the high-risk groups.
