Linking sedimentary total organic carbon to 210Pbex chronology from Changshou Lake in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region, China

Mercury contamination in the riparian ecosystem during the reservoir discharging regulated by a mega dam

Mercury (Hg) is extremely poisonous and can be absorbed through touch, inhalation, or consumption. In the living environment, Hg in contaminated sediment can be transferred into grass by the direct absorption through the roots or shoots. The intake of Hg due to Hg emissions may pose a threat to living bodies especially to human beings. The present study aims to provide a novel insight about total mercury (THg) and methyl mercury (MeHg) in a riparian grass (Cynodon dactylon (L).Pers) and sediments during the discharging phase (summertime at 145 m water level) in Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR-China); where C. dactylon is a dominant perennial herb in the riparian zone. Yet, the potential risk of Hg contamination in the riparian ecosystem is not thoroughly assessed in the dam regulated reservoir. This study was conducted in the riparian zones of the reservoir formed by a mega dam (Three Gorge Dam) which regulates the water levels during the summer and winter period in the TGR. Our results showed that riparian sediments were acting as a sink for THg and MeHg. Insignificant correlation of THg and MeHg was found between the amphiphyte C. dactylon and its surrounding sediments in the TGR. Bioconcentration factors values for MeHg were found higher than 1 in all study locations in the riparian zones in TGR, which could be due to action of certain bacteria/purely chemical-based methylation on inorganic form of Hg. Additionally, translocation factor indices also highlighted that the amphiphyte C. dactylon was MeHg accumulator in riparian zones. These results suggested that since riparian sediment was found acting as the sink for THg and MeHg during discharging phase, MeHg contamination in the amphiphyte C. dactylon in riparian zones was not caused by the riparian sediments but by other factors, for instance, the anthropogenic activities in the TGR. Finally, this study leads to conclude that amphiphyte C. dactylon can be used as biomonitoring agent for Hg pollution in the TGR.

Chronological records of sediment organic carbon at an entrance of Dongting Lake: Response to historical meteorological events

Lake sediments are the products of soil erosion and are strongly influenced by climate variability, particularly extreme meteorological events. Sediment organic carbon (SOC) can reflect environmental changes that affect sediment transport. However, the response of SOC chronological records to major meteorological events is relatively unknown. This study explored the chronological regularity of SOC and verified its variations using major historical meteorological events. Based on three sediment profiles with a depth of 230 cm at the Yuan River entrance to the West Dongting Lake (Hanshou entrance), the SOC chronology was reconstructed by employing the sedimentation rates calculated by ¹³⁷Cs and ²¹⁰Pb. The sedimentary environment then was interpreted via comparisons and quantitative analysis. The grain distribution and the S-shaped distribution of SOC reflected the general deposition regularity of organic carbon in lake sediments, which gradually stabilized with depth. The average sedimentation rates based on ¹³⁷Cs and ²¹⁰Pb were 1.310 and 1.319 cm a^-1, respectively. Accordingly, SOC records covered the past 76 years via dating (0-100 cm), during which the SOC content first increased and subsequently stabilized. By comparing the data with the occurrence of 11 major historical meteorological events, we found that SOC generally increased after these events. Moreover, the frequent occurrence of meteorological events stabilized the SOC content. Severe floods had a greater impact on SOC content than severe droughts, causing SOC to change by up to 20.24% and 8.77%, respectively. Our findings suggest that major historical meteorological events can verify SOC chronological records, thereby highlighting their significant impacts on organic carbon variations in sediments.

Watershed diffuse pollution dynamics and response to land development assessment with riverine sediments

Sediment cores can reflect diffuse pollution history due to the accumulation of pollutants over time, therefore, the quantitative relationship between the sedimentation flux of pollutants and diffuse loads can identify the historical change. Sediment cores were collected from two river reaches in a small agricultural watershed (143 km²), and the total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) concentrations were determined. The sediments were dated using ²¹⁰Pb isotope radioactivity and the TN and TP sedimentation flux was calculated with Constant Rate of Supply (CRS) and Constant Initial Concentration (CIC) models. Watershed loss loads were simulated using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) in the same temporal period. As the similar natural condition in the post-depositional period of sediments, a linear regression model was used to analyze the relationship between TN and TP sedimentation flux and the hindcast model data. The TP sedimentation flux showed a clear positive relationship with its simulated load (R² = 0.600 and 0.664) using the CRS model, and better reflected long-term diffuse pollution loss dynamics than nitrogen. The impacts of land use change on diffuse pollution loading were identified with the combination of sedimentation flux from different reaches and watershed modeling. During the expansion of paddy land in the lower reach, the difference of TP sedimentation flux between upper and lower reaches narrowed, while gap of TN sedimentation flux increased. Base on the lateral correlations of two sections, the sediment concentration of TP was more reliable for the long term diffuse pollution assessment under land development.

From floodplain to aquatic sediments: Radiogeochronological fingerprints in a sediment core from the mining impacted Sancho Reservoir (SW Spain)

The Sancho Reservoir (SW Spain) was built in 1962, about the time of maximum ¹³⁷Cs fallout, and it has been affected by acid mine drainage (AMD) particularly since the mining cease in 2001. This is a unique scenario for studying the radiogeochronological fingerprints in AMD-affected sediments deposited over the former flood plain. A sediment core sampled in 2011 was analysed for bulk density, ¹³⁷Cs, ²³⁹Pu, ²⁴⁰Pu, ²¹⁰Pb, ²²⁶Ra, ²²⁸Ra, ²³⁴Th (²³⁸U) and ⁴⁰K, and studied with various radiometric dating models. Bulk density revealed unsteady compaction and likely depositional events. The activity concentrations of ²²⁶Ra, ²²⁸Ra, ²³⁴Th (²³⁸U) and ⁴⁰K were uniform down-core, but declining overall in the upper 0-25cm, revealing changes in provenance except for ²³⁸U, which increased in the top 10cm likely due to its supply by AMD. The AMD fingerprint was also found in the ^239+240Pu/¹³⁷Cs activity ratio, which increased in the top sediment layers. The ¹³⁷Cs and ^239+240Pu profiles show well defined peaks at the same depth, with inventories being about four times higher than the expected integrated atmospheric deposition in the area. The unsupported ²¹⁰Pb (²¹⁰Pb_exc) showed a complex non-monotonic profile interrupted at several sections, particularly around the ¹³⁷Cs peak. The whole dataset cannot be interpreted in terms of continuous sedimentation processes. Based upon correlated features in the bulk density and ²¹⁰Pb_exc profiles, a series of depositional events (likely linked to peaks in the rainfall records) have been identified in the core. These events date back to the period comprised since the construction of the dam until its increase in height in 1972, which likely displaced upstream the main depositional area of riverine loads, as inferred from sediment trap data. The CRS (with a reference date) and (a piecewise) CIC models have been used for complementing and discussing the chronology.

Sedimentary chronology reinterpreted from Changshou Lake of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area reveals natural and anthropogenic controls on sediment production

Sedimentary archives preserved in geomorphic sinks provide records of historical sediment dynamics and its related natural and anthropogenic controls. This study reinterpreted sedimentary processes in Changshou Lake of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area in China by combining a rainfall erosivity index with multiple tracing proxies, and the impacts of natural and anthropogenic drivers on sediment production were also explored. Erosive rainfalls with low frequency and large magnitude in the rainy season contribute to a substantial proportion of annual total rainfall, which thus can be used to infer erosion and sediment yield events. The sedimentary chronology was determined by comparing rainfall erosivity index with depth distribution of ¹³⁷Cs and absolute particle size, which revealed annual sedimentation rates ranging from 1.1 to 2.3 cm a^-1. The multi-proxy dating index and variation of sedimentation rate divided the sediment profile into three major periods. The reference period (1956-1982) displays low variability of TOC, TN, trace metal concentrations, and mean sedimentation rate. In the stressed period (1982-1998), industrial and sewerage discharge led to input and deposition of TOC, TN, and trace metals (e.g., Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, and Ni). The highest annual sediment accumulation rate of 2.3 cm a^-1 may be ascribed to the 1982 big flood event. In the present period (1998-2013), increased TOC, TN and decreased trace metals in the top layers of the sediment core indicated changes in lake ecology. Fish farming promoted algal growth and primary productivity which caused eutrophication until 2004-2005. The reduced mean sedimentation rate of 1.7 cm a^-1 between 1998 and 2004, and thereafter, may be attributed to soil and water conservation and reforestation policies implemented in the Longxi catchment. Human activities such as deforestation, cultural and industrial revolution, and lake eutrophication associated with fish farming since 1989, therefore led to appreciable limnological variations. Overall, the dated sedimentary profile from Changshou Lake displays high consistency with archived historical events and reflects the impact of both natural and anthropogenic controls on sediment production.
