Thermo-activated peroxydisulfate oxidation of indomethacin: Kinetics study and influences of co-existing substances

Degradation of antiviral drug acyclovir by thermal activated persulfate process: Kinetics study and modeling

Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) pose a great threat to water environment security. In this study, acyclovir (ACV) was efficiently degraded by thermally activated persulfate (TAP) system. The ACV degradation increased with rising reaction temperature and persulfate dosage. With the existence of inorganic anions and humic acid, ACV removal was retarded to varying degrees. Under strong alkaline condition, it was observed that the degradation of ACV was significantly inhibited. In addition, Kintecus software was employed to simulate ACV removal and achieved a good fit with the experimental results. The contribution rates of main reactive radicals under acidic, neutral, and alkaline conditions were investigated, and the contribution of hydroxyl radical (⋅OH) increased significantly under alkaline condition. The main active species were identified as sulfate radical (SO₄⋅^-) and ⋅OH through quenching experiment, and the second-order reaction rate constants of SO₄⋅^- and ∙OH reacted with ACV were calculated to be 9.17 × 10⁹ M^-1 s^-1 and 2.74 × 10⁹ M^-1 s^-1, respectively. The main degradation pathways included addition of free radicals, oxidation of branch chain and ring opening. The acute and chronic toxicity of intermediates to organisms predicted by ECOSAR were significantly reduced compared with that of ACV.

Underlying mechanisms of promoted formation of haloacetic acids disinfection byproducts after indometacin degradation by non-thermal discharge plasma

Indometacin (IDM), as a kind of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, has ecological and health risks, which is the potential precursor of chlorination disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Non-thermal discharge plasma was attempted to eliminate IDM and control subsequent DBPs formation. Satisfactory removal performance for IDM was realized by the plasma oxidation; almost 100% of IDM was removed within 2 min. Relatively greater removal efficiency was gained at a higher plasma voltage and a lower pH level. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometer revealed that reactive species ·OH, O₂·^-, and ¹O₂ were responsible for IDM decomposition. Based on analyses of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy, three-dimensional fluorescence spectrum, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometer, attacks of reactive species resulted in sequence breakages in functional groups of IDM, leading to production of small molecular alcohols, acids, and amines. Possible decomposition pathways of IDM were proposed. The produced acetamide and 1H-indol-5-ol were important precursors of DBPs. Formation and toxicity of nitrogen-containing DBPs were dramatically inhibited after IDM degradation; however, those of haloacetic acids were strengthened. The relevant roadmaps among DBPs and degradation intermediates were figured out. This study revealed the underlying mechanisms of IDM degradation by discharge plasma and its potential risks in chlorination disinfection.

Using Fe-Cu/HGF composite cathodes for the degradation of Diuron by electro-activated peroxydisulfate

An iron-copper graphite felt (Fe-Cu/HGF) electrode was successfully prepared by heat treatment and impregnation of graphite felt as the support followed by calcination, and an electro-activated peroxydisulfate (E-PDS) system with Fe-Cu/HGF as the cathode was constructed to degrade Diuron. This system synergistically activated PDS through electrochemical processes and transition metal catalysis. High-valence metal ions could be converted into low-valence metal ions by reduction at the cathode, and low-valence metal ions continuously activated PDS to generate more sulfate radicals (SO₄^-) and hydroxyl radicals (OH) to accelerate Diuron degradation. The Fe-Cu/HGF composite cathode exhibited a performance superior to graphite felt (RGF) obtained using pretreatment only, including increased hydrophilicity, significantly increased number of defect sites and larger electroactive surface area. Under optimized experimental degradation conditions, Diuron could be completely removed in 35 min, at which time copper ion leaching was not detected in the solution, while the total iron ion concentration was 0.27 mg L^-1. Extending the reaction time to 6 h, the amount of total organic carbon was reduced to 32.2%. In addition, the free radicals that degraded Diuron were identified as mainly SO₄^- and OH with a slightly higher contribution of SO₄^-. The mechanism and pathways of Diuron degradation in the E-PDS system were determined. The E-PDS system was successfully applied to the degradation of other pollutants and the degradation of Diuron in different simulated water environments. In summary, the E-PDS system using Fe-Cu/HGF as the cathode is a promising treatment method for Diuron-containing wastewater.

COVID-19 drugs in aquatic systems: a review

The outbreak of the human coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has induced an unprecedented increase in the use of several old and repurposed therapeutic drugs such as veterinary medicines, e.g. ivermectin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, protein and peptide therapeutics, disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs and antimalarial drugs, antiretrovirals, analgesics, and supporting agents, e.g. azithromycin and corticosteroids. Excretion of drugs and their metabolites in stools and urine release these drugs into wastewater, and ultimately into surface waters and groundwater systems. Here, we review the sources, behaviour, environmental fate, risks, and remediation of those drugs. We discuss drug transformation in aquatic environments and in wastewater treatment systems. Degradation mechanisms and metabolite toxicity are poorly known. Potential risks include endocrine disruption, acute and chronic toxicity, disruption of ecosystem functions and trophic interactions in aquatic organisms, and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance.

Integration of oxygen vacancies into BiOI via a facile alkaline earth ion-doping strategy for the enhanced photocatalytic performance toward indometacin remediation

Bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) has garnered intense attention in the field of photocatalysis for environmental remediation; however, it suffers from a high electron-hole recombination rate. In this study, for the first time, we report on a facile strategy for the creation of oxygen vacancies in BiOI via strontium (Sr²⁺) doping. The as-prepared 0.45-SrBiOI demonstrated significantly enhanced photocatalytic degradation of indometacin under visible light exposure, which was almost 10 folds higher than pristine BiOI. This augmented photocatalytic performance was ascribed to the accelerated separation of charge carriers by oxygen vacancies, as well as Sr ion trapping electrons. Reactive species determination experiments revealed that O₂^▪-, ¹O₂, and h⁺ were the dominant active species. Finally, potential indometacin degradation pathways were proposed based on the identification of degradation by-products and theoretical calculations. This study offers new perspectives for the synthesis of highly efficient and cost effective BiOI-based photocatalysts, and provides a promising strategy toward advanced environmental remediation.

Sulfate radical-based oxidation of the aminopyralid and picloram herbicides: The role of amino group on pyridine ring

The widespread utilization of pesticides has attracted increasing attention to their environmental impacts and effective removal strategies. In the present study, the degradation of herbicides picloram (PCLO) and aminopyralid (AMP) with similar structures were investigated systematically by thermo activated persulfate. Overweight SO₄^•- was determined to be the predominant oxidizing species by quenching experiment. Obtained by laser-flash photolysis (LFP), reaction rate constants of SO₄^•- towards AMP and PCLO were determined at 1.56 × 10⁹ M^-1s^-1 and 1.21 × 10⁹ M^-1s^-1, respectively. Product analysis revealed that both substances underwent similar oxidation paths, namely, successive oxidation on pyridine ring and formation of coupling-products as well as further hydroxylation and decarboxylation. Amino group on the pyridine ring was identified as the main reactive site, which was further confirmed by DFT calculation. It was susceptible attacked by SO₄^•- to form deamination, nitration, and self-coupling products. These couples could be further oxidatively dehydrated to form azo and a series of azo derivatives. EOCSAR program predicted significant hazards on aquatic species during the formation of these couplings and azo derivatives. Our work emphasized the potential ability and toxicity of contaminates to produce azo substances in the presence of amino groups on the pyridine ring.

Synthesis of a carbon dots modified g-C3N4/SnO2 Z-scheme photocatalyst with superior photocatalytic activity for PPCPs degradation under visible light irradiation

As an emerging carbon nanomaterial, carbon dots (CDs) have superior prospects for applications in the area of photocatalysis due to their unique optical and electronic properties. In this study, a novel CDs modified g-C₃N₄/SnO₂ photocatalyst (CDs/g-C₃N₄/ SnO₂) was successfully synthesized by the thermal polymerization. Under visible light irradiation, the resulting CDs/g-C₃N₄/SnO₂ photocatalyst exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of indomethacin (IDM). It was demonstrated that a 0.5 % loading content of CDs led to the highest IDM degradation rate, which was 5.62 times higher than that of pristine g-C₃N₄. This improved photocatalytic activity might have been attributed to the unique up-conversion photoluminescence (PL) properties and efficient charge separation capacities of the CDs. Moreover, the combination of g-C₃N₄ with SnO₂ improved the separation of photoinduced carriers and augmented the specific surface area. Reactive species (RSs) scavenging experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) revealed that superoxide radical anions (O₂^·-) and photogenerated holes (h⁺) played critical roles during the photocatalytic process. The results of the detection of H₂O₂ and ESR confirmed that CDs/g-C₃N₄/ SnO₂ was a Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst. Further, HRAM LC-MS/MS was employed to identify the byproducts of IDM, and the major IDM degradation pathways of the CDs/g-C₃N₄/SnO₂ photocatalyst were proposed. This study provides new ideas for the design of novel CDs modified photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

Microwave-assisted method to degrade phenol using persulfate or hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by Cu-bearing silicon carbide

The radical generation properties of hydrogen peroxide and persulfate for phenol degradation were investigated under microwave irradiation using copper-doped silicon carbide (Cu/SiC) composites as catalyst. The results showed that 90% and 70% of phenol and total organic carbon (TOC), respectively, were removed within 7 min. Microwave activation of hydrogen peroxide and sodium persulfate in terms of thermal effects and accelerated electron transfer was analyzed by degradation kinetics and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The microwave activation of Na₂S₂O₈ demonstrated that the hot spots promote decomposition of persulfate more rapidly and the rate of persulfate decomposition was more than three times the activation rate of a normal heating method. There is a synergistic effect between Cu and microwave radiation, which is highlighted by the H₂O₂ activation; ·OH was generated due to the redox cycle between Cu(I)/Cu(II) and was responsible for phenol degradation using H₂O₂. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis indicated that hydroxylation and sulfate radicals addition of phenol were the initial oxidation reaction steps of hydrogen peroxide and persulfate, respectively, followed by further oxidation to form short-chain carboxylic acids.

Ultrathin Ag2WO4-coated P-doped g-C3N4 nanosheets with remarkable photocatalytic performance for indomethacin degradation

As a metal-free photocatalyst, the photocatalytic activity of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) remains restricted due to an insufficient visible-light absorption capacity, the rapid recombination of photoinduced carriers, and low surface area. Consequently, P-doped g-C₃N₄ (PCN) was successfully prepared via a single -step thermal polymerization technique using phytic acid biomass and urea, which exhibited remarkable photocatalytic activity for the degradation of indometacin (IDM). The IDM degradation rate was 7.1 times greater than that of pristine g-C₃N₄ (CN). Furthermore, Ag₂WO₄ was loaded onto the surface of the PCN, which formed a Z-scheme heterostructure that promoted the separation of photogenerated carriers. According to analyses of the chemical binding states of PCN, P atoms replaced carbon atoms in the CN framework. According to electron localization function analysis, the low ELF values of P-N facilitated the transfer of photoelectrons. The results of active species scavenging experiments confirmed that superoxide radicals were the primary active species in the photocatalytic degradation system. Finally, the photocatalytic degradation pathways of IDM were predicted through the identification of by-products and IDM reaction sites.

Hydrothermal Enhanced Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron Activated Peroxydisulfate Oxidation of Chloramphenicol in Aqueous Solutions: Fe-Speciation Analysis and Modeling Optimization

The efficiencies of the nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) and hydrothermal and nZVI-heat activation of peroxydisulfate (PS) were studied for the decomposition of chloramphenicol (CAP) in aqueous solutions. The nZVI heat combined with activation of PS provided a significant synergistic effect. A central composite design (CCD) with response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to explore the influences of single parameter and interactions of selected variables (initial pH, PS concentration, nZVI and temperature) on degradation rates with the purpose of condition optimization. A quadratic model was established based on the experimental results with excellent correlation coefficients of 0.9908 and 0.9823 for R2 and R2adj. The optimized experimental condition for 97.12% CAP removal was predicted with the quadratic model as 15 mg/L, 0.5 mmol/L, 7.08 and 70 °C for nZVI dosage, PS, initial pH, and temperature, respectively. This study demonstrated the effectiveness of RSM for the modeling and prediction of CAP removal processes. In the optimal condition, Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 were the predominant solid products after reactions based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, which could also act as the activators along with the reaction. Overall, it could be concluded that hydrothermal enhanced nZVI activation of PS was a promising and efficient choice for CAP degradation.

One-step synthesis of nitrogen-doped sludge carbon as a bifunctional material for the adsorption and catalytic oxidation of organic pollutants

Nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) materials have been extensively investigated for their great potential applications in adsorption, catalysis, etc. Herein, we report a facile one-step pyrolysis process for NC synthesis using abundant bio-waste of excess sludge as carbon source and cheap precursor of urea as nitrogen source. The developed materials were evaluated for organic pollutants removal through adsorption and catalytic oxidation by peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Experimental results demonstrated that nitrogen doping significantly affected the elemental composition and microstructure of NC, leading to improved adsorption capability as well as PMS activation activity for methylene blue (MB) removal. The adsorption capacity for MB reached 35.831 mg g^-1 over NC-700 sample (NC prepared at 700 °C). In MB catalytic oxidation experiments, effects of sample calcination temperature, catalyst dosage, PMS loading, and co-existing ions were investigated. Under optimal reaction conditions, 98.70% of MB could be removed in 20 min. Through radical quenching and electron spin resonance (ESR) tests, it was confirmed that singlet oxygen (¹O₂) was the main reactive species for MB degradation. Additionally, NC-700 performed well in recycle studies without significant efficiency loss. Other typical organic pollutants including malachite green (MG), methyl orange (MO), bisphenol A (BPA), phenol (PE), and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) could also be removed using NC-700 as adsorbent and catalyst. These features manifest that excess sludge-derived NC could be a promising material for organic pollutants remediation.

Thermochemical degradation of furfural by sulfate radicals in aqueous solution: optimization and synergistic effect studies

In this study, thermochemical degradation of furfural by sulfate radical has been investigated to find the best-operating conditions. For this purpose, the response surface methodology (RSM) based on central composite design (CCD) was applied to optimize the five independent variables of thermally activated persulfate (TAP)/nZVI oxidation process including pH, PS concentration, furfural concentration, nZVI dosage, and heat. The ANOVA results ("P > F value" < 0.0001 and [Formula: see text] = 0.9701) showed the obtained quadratic model is acceptable to predict furfural removal. Based on the reduced quadratic model PS concentration, nZVI dosage, and heat revealed the positive effects on removal efficiency, while pH and furfural concentration had a negative effect. Accordingly, 98.4% of furfural could be removed within 60 min of reaction under the optimum conditions: pH 5.26, PS concentration of 20.52 mM, furfural concentration of 84.32 mg/L, nZVI dosage of 1.15 mg/L, and a temperature of 79 °C. In such circumstances, the furfural removal efficiency for TAP, PS/nZVI, PS, and nZVI was 94.5, 9, 3, and 2%, respectively. Therefore, based on the synergy index (SI) values, the combination of PS, nZVI, and heat can lead to a synergistic effect in the performance of the thermochemical process.
