Analysis of 17α-ethinylestradiol and bisphenol A adsorption on anthracite surfaces by site energy distribution

Enhanced adsorption of phosphate by rice straw-based biochar prepared via metal impregnation and bio-template technology

Phosphate removal from water through green, highly efficient technologies has received much attention. Biochar is an effective adsorbent for phosphate removal. However, adsorption capacity of phosphate on pristine rice straw-based biochar was not optimistic due to low anion exchange capacity. In this study, Fe-modified, Mg-modified and MgFe-modified rice straw-based biochar (Fe-BC, Mg-BC and MgFe-BC) were prepared by combining metal impregnation and biological template methods to improve the adsorption capacity of phosphate. The surface characteristics of biochar and the adsorption behavior of phosphate on biochar were investigated. The modified biochar had the specific surface area of 17.910-39.336 m2/g, and their surfaces were rich in a large number of functional groups and metal oxides. Phosphate release was observed on pristine rice straw-based biochar without metal impregnation. The maximum adsorption capacities of phosphate on MgFe-BC, Mg-BC and Fe-BC at 298 K were 6.93, 5.75 and 0.23 mg/g, respectively. Adsorption was a spontaneous endothermic process, while chemical adsorption dominated and electrostatic attraction and pores filling existed simultaneously. Based on the site energy distribution theory study, the standard deviation of MgFe-BC decreased from 6.96 to 4.64 kJ/mol with temperature increasing, which proved that the higher the temperature would cause the lower heterogeneity. Moreover, the effects of pH, humic acid, co-existing ions and ionic strength on phosphate adsorption of MgFe-BC were also discussed. MgFe-BC with fine pores and efficient adsorption sites is an ideal adsorbent for phosphate removal from water.

Green synthesis of magnetic azo-linked porous organic polymers with recyclable properties for enhanced Bisphenol-A adsorption from aqueous solutions

Porous organic polymers (POPs) present superior adsorption performance to steroid endocrine disruptors. However, the effective recovery and high cost have been a big limitation for their large-scale applications. Herein, magnetic azo-linked porous polymers (Fe3O4@SiO2/ALP-p) were designed and prepared in a green synthesis approach using low-price materials from phloroglucinol and pararosaniline via a diazo-coupling reaction under standard temperature and pressure conditions, which embedded with Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles to form three-dimensional interlayer network structure with flexible-rigid interweaving. The saturated adsorption capacity to bisphenol-A (BPA) was 485.09 mg/g at 298 K, which increased by 1.4 times compared with ALP-p of relatively smaller mass density. This enhanced adsorption was ascribed to increment from surface adsorption and pore filling with 2.3 times of specific surface area and 2.6 times of pore volume, although the total organic functional groups decreased with Fe3O4@SiO2 amendment. Also, the adsorption rate increased by about 1.1 and 1.5-fold due to enhancement in the initial stage of surface adsorption and subsequent stage pore diffusion, respectively. Moreover, this adsorbent could be used in broad pH (3.0-7.0) and salinity adaptability (<0.5 mol/L). The loss of adsorption capacity and magnetic recovery were lower than 1.1% and 0.8% in each operation cycle because of the flexible-rigid interweave. This excellent performance was contributed by synergistic effects from physisorption and chemisorption, such as pore filling, electrostatic attraction, π-π stacking, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interaction. This study offered a cost-effective, high-performing, and ecologically friendly material along with a green preparation method.

Novel fibrous Ag(NP) decorated clay-polymer composite: Implications in water purification contaminated with predominant micro-pollutants and bacteria

Due to the potential harm caused by emerging micro-pollutants to living organisms, contaminating water supplies by micro-pollutants like EDCs, pharmaceuticals, and microorganisms has become a concern in many countries. Considering both microbiological and micro-pollutant exposure risks associated with water use for agricultural/or household purposes, it is imperative to create a strategy for improving pollutant removal from treated wastewater that is both effective and affordable. Natural clay minerals efficiently remove contaminants from wastewater, though the pristine clay has less affinity to several organic pollutants. Hydrophilic polymers, viz., poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), improve the dispersion of particles, flocculation processes, and surface properties. In this study, PEG grafted with attapulgite, thereby providing a high-specific surface-area, mesoporous materials for the adsorption of micro-pollutants like ciprofloxacin (CIP) and 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) at high rates. A gentle washing process regenerates the clay-polymer material several times with no performance loss, and the natural water implications show fair applicability of solid in decontaminating the CIP and EE2 in an aqueous medium. Further, greenly synthesized silver nanoparticles in situ disperse with the clay polymer efficiently remove the gram-positive and gram-negative bacterium viz., Bacillus subtilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which are commonly persistent in aquatic environments. The clay polymer outperformed a modified clay composite to eliminate microorganisms and organic micro-pollutants in significant quantities quickly. These results clearly show the importance of fibrous clay-polymer composite for water purification technologies.

Effect of iron nanoparticles on chromium adsorption in aqueous solution using magnetic biochar: A site energy distribution analysis

The effects of adding green-synthesized magnetic iron-containing nanoparticles (GSMFe) onto biochar in aqueous solution for the adsorptive removal of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] were investigated in this study. Nanocomposites, denoted as green synthesis magnetic biochar (GSMB), were created using a green synthesis technique with white tea residue to introduce GSMFe into biochar. Six adsorbents, varying in GSMFe content, were tested for their effectiveness in eliminating Cr(VI), a globally significant hazardous heavy metal. The results demonstrated that incorporating GSMFe into biochar led to significant improvements in adsorption capacity and saturation magnetization. With an increasing amount of GSMFe, the maximum adsorption capacity increased from 2.47 mg/g (EWTWB) to 9.11 mg/g (GSMB4). The highest saturation magnetization was achieved at 13.4 Am2/kg at GSMB4. Similarly, surface areas rose up to 72.9 m2/g at GSMB3 but declined thereafter due to GSMFe aggregation and pore blockage. Sorption behavior for Cr(VI) was assessed using five isotherm models, with the Redlich-Peterson model showing the best fit. The analysis of approximate site energy distribution (SED) indicates that the incorporation of GSMFe enhances the frequency of the entire range of sorption energy sites, while the biochar matrix contributes to a slight increase in medium sorption energy sites within the GSMFe. Among the GSMBs, the difference were more pronounced at low-energy sites than at high-energy sites. At higher energy sites (27,500-40,000 J/mol), sorption site frequencies remained similar, regardless of GSMFe content and associated physicochemical properties. For sorption energy site values exceeding 17,500 J/mol (Cr(VI) concentration below 50 mg/L), GSMB2 is regarded as a more practical choice due to its relatively large area under the frequency distribution curve and commendable cost-effectiveness.

Enhanced removal of organophosphate esters by iron-modified biochar with developed mesoporous: Performance and mechanism based on site energy distribution theory

Removing the widely concerned pollutant of organophosphate esters (OPEs) by agriculture waste biochar is an effective way to address the waste and pollutant problem simultaneously. In this work, an iron-modified coconut shell biochar (MCSB) was prepared by co-pyrolysis method and used to adsorb tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) and tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP), which were two typical OPEs. The attention was focused on comprehensively investigating the adsorption behaviors to study the adsorption mechanisms of TCEP and TCPP onto MCSB. With the development of mesoporous and formation of γ-Fe₂O₃ in MCSB, the adsorption equilibrium was quickly reached in 60 min with the Langmuir maximum adsorption capacities of 211.3 mg/g for TCEP and 223.7 mg/g for TCPP, respectively. Results of adsorption kinetics and isotherm showed the heterogeneous and multilayer of the adsorption process. Pore-filling interaction, the Lewis acid-base interaction, and the hydrophobic interaction were considered to drive the adsorption. And the site energy distribution theory was introduced to further reveal that the physisorption was the main adsorption mechanism, while the Lewis acid-base interaction was responsible for the differences in adsorption of TCEP and TCPP onto MCSB. Additionally, the excellent adsorption performances of MCSB in various circumstances and fixed-bed column experiments suggested that the MCSB would be a promising adsorbent for OPEs removal.

Photoaging processes of polyvinyl chloride microplastics enhance the adsorption of tetracycline and facilitate the formation of antibiotic resistance

Microplastics (MPs), antibiotics and microorganism ubiquitously coexist in aquatic environments. MPs inevitably undergo photoaging processes in aquatic environments, affecting the interactions between MPs and antibiotics and the antibiotic resistance of microorganism. In this study, the impact of photoaging processes of MPs on their adsorption behavior of tetracycline (TC) and related formation of antibiotic resistance were investigated. It was found that the photoaging processes significantly increased the adsorption capacity of TC onto MPs, with the Q_e increasing from 0.387 to 0.507 mg/g at 288 K and from 0.507 to 0.688 mg/g at 308 K. The site energy distribution (SED) analysis further confirmed that the enhanced adsorption capacity was attributed to more high-energy adsorption sites acquired from MPs photoaging processes. Moreover, the enhanced adsorption of TC further facilitated the formation of seven antibiotic resistance genes (i.e., tetA, tetB, tetC, tetD, tetE, tetG, tetK) when MPs adsorbed with TC was covered by biofilm. This study helps comprehensively understand the environmental behaviors of co-existing MPs, antibiotics and microorganisms, providing a theoretical basis for evaluating and mitigating their coexistence risks.

Estrogen adsorption from an aqueous solution on the chitosan nanoparticles

In this research, chitosan nanoparticles as an efficient and reusable adsorbent with adsorption capacity of 5.79 mg/g, surface area of 62 m²/g and pH_pzc of 8.07 were applied to remove the ethinylestradiol (as a sample of estrogen) from an aqueous wastewater. The chitosan nanoparticles were characterized by SEM, XRD and FT-IR analyses. Four independent variables involving contact time, adsorbent dosage, pH, and initial concentration of estrogen were applied to design the experiments by Design Expert software (CCD under RSM). In fact, number of experiments was minimized and the operating conditions were optimized for the maximum estrogen removal. The results indicated that three independent variables (contact time, adsorbent dosage, and pH) increment increased the estrogen removal while the estrogen initial concentration enhancement decreased the removal due to the concentration polarization phenomenon. The optimum conditions for the estrogen removal (92.50 %) on the chitosan nanoparticles were found at contact time of 220 min, adsorbent dosage of 1.45 g/l, pH of 7.3 and estrogen initial concentration of 5.7 mg/l. Moreover, the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second order models could properly legitimize estrogen adsorption process on the chitosan nanoparticles.

A critical review of adsorption isotherm models for aqueous contaminants: Curve characteristics, site energy distribution and common controversies

The quantitative description of the equilibrium data by the isotherm models is an indispensable link in adsorption studies. The previous review papers focus on the underlying assumptions, fitting methods, error functions and practical applications of the isotherm models, usually ignoring their curve characteristics, selection criteria and common controversies. The main contents of this review include: (i) effect of the model parameters on the isotherm curves; (ii) determination of the site energy distribution; (iii) selection criteria of the isotherm models; and (iv) elimination of some common controversies. It is of great significance to reveal the curve characteristics for selecting a proper isotherm model. The site energy distribution is conducive to understanding the physicochemical properties of the adsorbent surface. The complete isotherm is recommended to be correlated with the experimental data. The model parameter q_max should be cautiously adopted for comparison of the adsorbent performance. The residual plot can be used to diagnose the fitting quality of the isotherm models further. This review also addresses some common mistakes and controversies and thereby avoids their propagation in future publications.

Anthracite Releases Aromatic Carbons and Reacts with Chlorine to Form Disinfection Byproducts in Drinking Water Production

Anthracite is globally used as a filter material for water purification. Herein, it was found that up to 15 disinfection byproducts (DBPs) were formed in the chlorination of anthracite-filtered pure water, while the levels of DBPs were below the detection limit in the chlorination of zeolite-, quartz sand-, and porcelain sandstone-filtered pure water. In new-anthracite-filtered water, the levels of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), and ammonia nitrogen (NH₃-N) ranged from 266.3 to 305.4 μg/L, 37 to 61 μg/L, and 8.6 to 17.1 μg/L, respectively. In aged anthracite (collected from a filter at a DWTP after one year of operation) filtered water, the levels of the above substances ranged from 475.1 to 597.5 μg/L, 62.1 to 125.6 μg/L, and 14 to 28.9 μg/L, respectively. Anthracite would release dissolved substances into filtered water, and aged anthracite releases more substances than new anthracite. The released organics were partly (around 5%) composed by the μg/L level of toxic and carcinogenic aromatic carbons including pyridine, paraxylene, benzene, naphthalene, and phenanthrene, while over 95% of the released organics could not be identified. Organic carbon may be torn off from the carbon skeleton structure of anthracite due to hydrodynamic force in the water filtration process.

Adsorption kinetics of 20 glucocorticoids at environmentally relevant concentrations in wastewater by powdered activated carbons and development of surrogate models

Glucocorticoids (GCs) are widely used in the treatment of the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19), and the toxicity of GCs to aquatic organisms has aroused widespread concern. Powdered activated carbon (PAC) has proven effective in removing various trace organic pollutants. In this study, the adsorption behaviors of 20 typical GCs onto PACs were investigated at environmentally relevant concentrations (ng/L) in real wastewater, using four commercially available PACs (HDB, WPH, 20BF, PWA). The results showed that PAC adsorption was feasible for GC removal at ng/L concentrations. After adsorption for 60 min, the GC removal efficiencies obtained by HDB, WPH, 20BF, and PWA were 90-98 %, 89-97 %, 84-96 %, and 71-90 %, respectively. The adsorption processes of 20 GCs on PACs were well fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetics model (with R ² >0.98). Among the four PACs, HDB achieved the highest rates because of the electrostatic attraction between HDB (positively charged) and the complex of GCs and natural organic matter (GC-NOM, negatively charged). Among the 20 GCs, compounds with substitutions of halogen atoms or five-membered rings at C-17 achieved higher adsorption rates because of the enhanced formation of hydrogen bonds and a resulting increase in electron density. In addition, surrogate models with total fluorescence (TF) and ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm (UV₂₅₄) were developed to monitor the attenuation trend of GCs during adsorption processes. Compared with the UV₂₅₄ model, the TF model showed better sensitivity to GC monitoring, which could greatly simplify the water quality monitoring process and facilitate online monitoring of GCs in water.

Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose-sugarcane bagasse adsorbents for removal of 17α-ethinylestradiol from aqueous solution and freshwater

Adsorbents made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and sugarcane bagasse (BG) microparticles were applied for the separation of 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) from aqueous solution in batch, and from aqueous solution and freshwater in fixed-bed columns. HPMC chains and BG microparticles were crosslinked by the esterification with citric acid. The adsorbents presented compression modulus values that increased from 208 ± 20 kPa (pure HPMC) to 917 ± 90 kPa, when the content of BG particles added to HPMC was 50 wt% (HPMC50BG). The porosity (~ 97%), specific surface area (1.16 ± 0.10 m²/g) and swelling degree (20 ± 1 g water/g) values were not affected by the addition of BG particles. The adsorption isotherms determined for EE2 on HPMC and on HPMC50BG fitted to the Langmuir and Freundlich models; the adsorption capacity of HPMC was slightly higher than that of composite HPMC50BG. Nevertheless, the addition of BG particles rendered outstanding mechanical reinforcement and dimensional stability to the adsorbents. The adsorption was driven by (i) hydrophobic interactions between EE2 methylene and aromatic groups and HPMC methyl groups, as evidenced by FTIR spectroscopy, and (ii) H bonds between HPMC and EE2 hydroxyl groups, as revealed by the adsorption enthalpy change (ΔH_ads) of - 45 kJ/mol. Column adsorption experiments of EE2 from aqueous solution on HPMC and HPMC50BG indicated adsorptive capacity (q₀) values of 8.06 mg/g and 4.07 mg/g, respectively. These values decreased considerably for the adsorption of EE2 from river water, probably due to the competition of EE2 with humic substances dissolved in natural water. The HPMC adsorbents could be recycled retaining up to 83% of the original efficiency.

Assessment of fouling mechanisms on reverse osmosis (RO) membrane during permeation of 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) solutions

Fouling mechanisms are mainly caused by the deposition of organic compounds that reduce the removal efficiency on reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. It can be described by mathematical models. The aim of this study was to evaluate the membrane fouling and rejection mechanisms when aqueous solutions containing 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) in different concentrations are permeated at 5 and 10 bar in a bench-scale dead-end RO system. Adsorption tests were performed and the fouling mechanism was assessed by Hermia's model for solutions of EE2 at concentrations typically found in the environment (µg L^-1). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) has indicated the presence of EE2 on the fouled membrane surface. Membrane rejection of EE2 ranged from 90% to 98% and the main rejection mechanism was size exclusion at all experimental conditions. However, for the higher concentration of EE2 permeated at 5 and 10 bar, adsorption of 7 and 32 mg m^-2, respectively, also took place. The rejection was influenced by fouling and concentration polarisation. Fouled membranes present higher rejection of hydrophobic neutral compounds and the concentration polarisation reduces rejection. Hermia's model demonstrated that the permeation values fitted better the standard blocking filtration and cake filtration equations for describing fouling mechanism. This study showed that fouling also occurs in the TFC RO membrane after permeation of EE2, which corroborates with studies using other pollutants.

Combined reverse osmosis and UV/H2O2 treatment of aqueous solutions of bisphenol A and 17α-ethinylestradiol: assessment of estrogenic activity

Bisphenol-A (BPA) and 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) are considered endocrine disrupting compounds (EDC) and they may be harmful to the normal functioning of endocrine systems of humans and animals. Moreover, the presence of these compounds in superficial and groundwater may represent serious risks, even in low concentrations like ng·L^-1. The objectives of this study were to remove BPA and EE2 from solutions containing a mixture of these compounds in ultrapure water at low concentrations through reverse osmosis (RO) membrane combined with a UV/H₂O₂ process. Furthermore, to assess the estrogenic activity reduction after such treatments, in vitro recombinant yeast-estrogen screen (YES) assay was used. The removal efficiencies of target micropollutants increased with the increase of H₂O₂ dosage. For RO permeate stream, they enhanced from 91% to 96% for EE2 and from 76% to 90% for BPA while, for the concentrate stream, from 70% to 81% for EE2 and 41% to 84% for BPA as the H₂O₂ concentration were increased from 100 to 1000 µg·L^-1. The OH radicals' generation was the dominant factor in the degradation of EDC during the UV/H₂O₂ treatment since the photolysis itself was not enough to degrade BPA or EE2. The estrogenic activity reduction after UV/H₂O₂ treatment was high, ranging from 92% to 98% for the permeate stream and from 50% to 93% for the concentrate stream. The EE2 was responsible for the whole observed estrogenic activity since BPA does not present estrogenicity, by in vitro YES assay, in the concentrations observed.

Polystyrene microplastics increase estrogenic effects of 17α-ethynylestradiol on male marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma)

Microplastics (MPs) and endocrine disrupting chemicals are ubiquitous pollutants in marine environments, but their combined ecological risk is unclear. This study exposed male marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) to 10 ng/L 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE₂) alone or EE₂ plus 2, 20, and 200 μg/L polystyrene MPs for 28 days to investigate the impacts of MPs on the reproductive disruption of EE₂. The results showed that 10 ng/L EE₂ alone did not affect biometric parameters, while co-exposure to EE₂ and 20, 200 μg/L MPs suppressed the growth and decreased gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic indices. Compared to EE₂ alone, EE₂ plus MPs exposure significantly increased plasma 17β-estradiol (E₂) levels in a dose-dependent manner, and co-exposure to EE₂ and 20, 200 μg/L MPs significantly increased the ratios of E₂/testosterone (T). Moreover, EE₂ plus MPs exposure elevated the transcription levels of estrogen biomarker genes vitellogenin and choriogenin, and estrogen receptor (ERα and ERβ). Morphological analysis also showed that co-exposure to EE₂ and MPs induced more severe damage to the testes and livers, indicating that MPs increased the toxicity of EE₂. The actual EE₂ concentrations in the solution increased with the exposure concentrations of MPs, suggesting that MPs changed the fate and behavior of EE₂ in the seawater. These findings demonstrate that MPs could increase the estrogenic effects of EE₂ on marine fish, suggesting that the combined health risk of MPs and endocrine disrupting chemicals on marine organisms should be paid great attention.

Nitrogen removal from domestic wastewater using core-shell anthracite/Mg-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) in constructed wetlands

To investigate the mechanism of nitrogen removal by anthracites and enhance the nitrogen removal efficiency in constructed wetland, three kinds of layered double hydroxides (MgFe-LDHs, MgCo-LDHs, MgAl-LDHs) were prepared by co-precipitation under alkaline conditions and coated in situ on the surface of anthracites to synthesize core-shell anthracites/Mg-LDHs composites. Experiments with different treatments (columns loaded with original anthracites and anthracite/Mg-LDH composites) were conducted to study the nitrogen removal efficiency of domestic wastewater in constructed wetlands. The results of nitrogen removal experiments showed that the anthracite/MgAl-LDH composite had the best performance with average removal rates of 53.69%, 72.91%, and 47.43% for TN, NH₄⁺-N, and organic nitrogen, respectively. Modification changed the denitrification mode of the anthracites. The data of adsorption isothermal experiments were fitted better with the Freundlich model. The amount of ammonifier, nitrosobacteria, nitrobacter, and denitrifier on the surface of the Mg-LDH-modified anthracite was higher than that of the original anthracite. The performance of the anthracite in removing nitrogen was attributed to physical interception, chemical adsorption, and biological degradation. Moreover, the modified anthracites were superior to the original anthracite in the chemical adsorption and biodegradation, which indicated that coating the Mg-LDHs on the surface of common anthracite was a potential method to improve the nitrogen removal efficiency of domestic wastewater and to restore the eutrophic water body.

A mechanistic study on removal efficiency of four antibiotics by animal and plant origin precursors-derived biochars

Extensive research has been performed on the utilization of biochar for pollutant removal via sorption. Additionally, the relationship between sorption strength of organic pollutants by organic matter and nanomaterials and their sorption site energy distribution has been studied. However, the linkage between removal efficiency of organic pollutants and the sorption site energy distribution on biochars is unknown. As a first attempt to address this knowledge gap, three biochars were derived from two plant-origin precursors (corn straw-CS; birch sawdust-BS) and one animal-origin precursor (meat and bone meal-MBM) at 500 °C (CS-500, BS-500, and MBM-500). In addition, two biochars were prepared with CS at 300 and 800 °C (CS-300 and CS-800) to examine the relationship between their site energy distribution and removal efficiency of antibiotics including sulfadiazine (SDZ), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), tetracycline (TC) and ciprofloxacin (CFX) by these materials. Our findings showed that the antibiotic-biochar interactions can be well interpreted with site energy distribution and XPS analysis results. Polar interactions between CS-300, CS-500, and CS-800 and SDZ and SMX occurring at the high-energy sites dominated their removal. However, TC and CFX removal by these biochars was driven by their polar interactions occurring at high-energy sites and π-π interactions at low-energy sites. The π-π stacking mechanism tended to dominate their removal with increasing charring temperature. Abundance of polar functionalities on CS-500, BS-500, and MBM-500 and TC removal efficiency of these materials consistently followed an order of MBM-500 > CS-500 > BS-500, highlighting importance of precursors for making biochars and polar interactions in its removal.

Adsorption of fulvic acid onto polyamide 6 microplastics: Influencing factors, kinetics modeling, site energy distribution and interaction mechanisms

Information on the interactions of microplastics (MPs) with dissolved organic matter (DOM) is essential for understanding their environmental impacts. This study selected fulvic acid (FA) as a typical DOM to investigate the influence of contact time, temperature, dosage, solution pH, salinity, and coexisting metal ions on the adsorption of FA onto polyamide 6 (PA6) MPs. The adsorption kinetic and isotherm can be successfully described by mixed-order (MO) and Freundlich models. The adsorption site energy distribution based on the Freundlich equation was applied to analyze the interaction between FA and PA6-MPs and the adsorption site heterogeneity. Thermodynamic analysis demonstrated that the values of parameters (ΔG_ads^°, ΔS_ads^°, ΔH_ads^°) were significantly affected by initial solution concentrations and the adsorption process was spontaneous, endothermic, and randomness-increased. Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed the importance of amide functional groups of PA6-MPs in controlling FA adsorption. Hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic, electrostatic, and n-π electron donor-acceptor (n-π EDA) interactions played different roles on adsorption of FA under different conditions of solution chemistry. These findings are beneficial to provide new insights involving the adsorption behavior and interaction mechanisms of FA onto PA6-MPs for the environmental risk assessment of MPs.

Optimizing Adsorption of 17α-Ethinylestradiol from Water by Magnetic MXene Using Response Surface Methodology and Adsorption Kinetics, Isotherm, and Thermodynamics Studies

Magnetic MXene composite Fe3O4@Ti3C2 was successfully prepared and employed as 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) adsorbent from water solution. The response surface methodology was employed to investigate the interactive effects of adsorption parameters (adsorption time, pH of the solution, initial concentration, and the adsorbent dose) and optimize these parameters for obtaining maximum adsorption efficiency of EE2. The significance of independent variables and their interactions were tested by the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and t-test statistics. Optimization of the process variables for maximum adsorption of EE2 by Fe3O4@Ti3C2 was performed using the quadratic model. The model predicted maximum adsorption of 97.08% under the optimum conditions of the independent variables (adsorption time 6.7 h, pH of the solution 6.4, initial EE2 concentration 0.98 mg L-1, and the adsorbent dose 88.9 mg L-1) was very close to the experimental value (95.34%). pH showed the highest level of significance with the percent contribution (63.86%) as compared to other factors. The interactive influences of pH and initial concentration on EE2 adsorption efficiency were significant (p < 0.05). The goodness of fit of the model was checked by the coefficient of determination (R2) between the experimental and predicted values of the response variable. The response surface methodology successfully reflects the impact of various factors and optimized the process variables for EE2 adsorption. The kinetic adsorption data for EE2 fitted well with a pseudo-second-order model, while the equilibrium data followed Langmuir isotherms. Thermodynamic analysis indicated that the adsorption was a spontaneous and endothermic process. Therefore, Fe3O4@Ti3C2 composite present the outstanding capacity to be employed in the remediation of EE2 contaminated wastewaters.

Evaluation of a hybrid process of magnetic ion-exchange resin treatment followed by ozonation in secondary effluent organic matter removal

The presence of effluent organic matter (EfOM) and organic micro-pollutants (OMPs) in secondary effluent is receiving increasing concern due to their potential impacts on the aquatic environment and human health. In this study, the removal characteristics of EfOM by magnetic ion-exchange resin (MIEX), ozonation, and the hybrid process of MIEX followed by ozonation (M + O) were compared by measuring the bulk organic indicators (BOIs), OMPs, bio-toxicity, and fluorescence. Furthermore, the desorption characteristics of MIEX were comprehensively studied. Ozonation could reduce the OMPs, total fluorescence (TF), genotoxicity, and oestrogenic activity more effectively than MIEX, with reductions of 80.3%, 97.8%, 98.9%, and 94.6%, respectively. The M + O process was capable of removing more EfOM than the individual MIEX or ozonation processes and could reduce the genotoxicity and oestrogenic activity to the detection limit. By implementing MIEX as a pre-treatment, the generation of ammonia-nitrogen and nitrate-nitrogen was effectively reduced in the subsequent ozonation process as MIEX adsorbed organic nitrogen and nitrite-nitrogen. The different regenerants influenced the OMP desorption performance of MIEX by changing the desorption mechanisms, and NaCl + NaOH was the best regenerant due to its high total OMP desorption efficiency. Parallel factor analysis coupled with self-organising maps further explained the differences in fluorescence desorption due to the addition of NaOH to the regenerated solution. Pearson correlation analysis indicated the potential of using spectroscopic indicators, such as ultraviolet absorbance and TF, to assess the evolution of OMPs and bio-toxicity during the M + O and MIEX desorption processes.

Adsorption of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on polystyrene microplastics in aquatic environments: Kinetic, isotherm and site energy distribution analysis

Microplastics and dissolved organic matter (DOM) are ubiquitous in aquatic environments. The adsorption behavior of DOM on microplastics in aquatic environments is a prominent concern. In this study, the adsorption of two types of DOM, Suwannee River Humic Acid (HA) and Suwannee River Fulvic Acid (FA), on polystyrene microplastics (PSMPs, 10 μm) in aquatic environments was investigated. The adsorption of both HA and FA on PSMPs could be well described by using pseudo second-order and Freundlich models. The adsorption of HA and FA on PSMPs was low pH-dependent, particularly for FA adsorption. However, the elevated ionic strength slightly increased the adsorption of HA and FA on PSMPs. Based on Freundlich model, the site energy distribution of HA and FA adsorption on PSMPs under the experimental conditions were estimated. HA and FA first occupied the high-energy adsorption sites and then diffused to the low-energy adsorption sites on PSMPs. With higher site energies, HA demonstrated a much stronger adsorption affinity to PSMPs than FA. The adsorption site heterogeneity (σ_e*) on PSMPs under the experimental conditions were close. Hydrophobic interaction and π-π electron donor acceptor interaction acted simultaneously in the HA and FA adsorption on PSMPs. The results of this study suggested that the environmental behaviors of microplastics would be influenced by the amount and the type of DOM as well as solution chemistry.

Incredulity on assumptions for the simplified Bohart-Adams model: 17a-ethinylestradiol separation in lab-scale anthracite columns

In this study, the original Bohart-Adams model was employed to analyze the experimental data of 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) separation in lab-scale anthracite columns with low initial concentration. Besides, the assumptions for the simplified Bohart-Adams model were calculated and discussed. The results revealed that the breakthrough curves of EE2 separation in anthracite columns under different conditions were asymmetrical N-shaped and could be divided into three parts. The third part of the breakthrough curves was successfully fitted by the original Bohart-Adams model with high R² values (higher than 0.918) and low ARS values (less than 0.141). As expected, the assumptions for the simplified Bohart-Adams model were not tenable during the whole experiment process. As a result, the EE2 separation capacities (N₀° and N₀^s) obtained from the original and simplified Bohart-Adams model were quite different, and most N₀° values were greater than N₀^s values. The N₀° value used to evaluate the pollutant separation capacity in lab-scale column would be more accurate. In addition, physical interception and chemical adsorption simultaneously worked in the EE2 separation in anthracite columns. Physical interception and bed depth in anthracite columns at low flow rate were related in quadratic function (R² > 0.988).

A novel Biochar modified by Chitosan-Fe/S for tetracycline adsorption and studies on site energy distribution

A novel wasted sludge-based Biochar modified by Chitosan and Fe/S (BCFe/S) was prepared for tetracycline (TC) removal from water. To investigate the similarities and differences in adsorption behaviors between Biochar and BCFe/S, characterization, kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics were discussed. The studies on site energy distribution (SED) were also presented. The results showed that the maximum TC adsorption amount was 51.78 mg/g for Biochar, while it was 183.01 mg/g for BCFe/S-4. Meanwhile, electrostatic attraction, π-π stacking, pore filling, silicate bonding and hydrogen bonding were the main adsorption mechanisms for TC removal by Biochar. Besides above mechanisms, chelating and ion exchange were also accounted for adsorption mechanisms for TC uptake by BCFe/S-4. Moreover, SED results revealed that the surface of Biochar was more homogeneous while the surface of BCFe/S-4 was more heterogeneous at higher temperature. Findings of this work could offer valuable information in designing adsorbents and investigating adsorption mechanisms.
