Reducing substances-enhanced degradation of pollutants by permanganate: The role of in situ formed colloidal MnO2

Enhanced permanganate oxidation of phenolic pollutants by alumina and potential industrial application

In this study, we found that alumina (Al2O3) may improve the degradation of phenolic pollutants by KMnO4 oxidation. In KMnO4/Al2O3 system, the removal efficiency of 2,4-Dibromophenol (2,4-DBP) was increased by 26.5%, and the apparent activation energy was decreased from 44.5 kJ/mol to 30.9 kJ/mol. The mechanism of Al2O3-catalytic was elucidated by electrochemical processes, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization and theoretical analysis that the oxidation potential of MnO4- was improved from 0.46 V to 0.49 V. The improvement was attributed to the formation of coordination bonds between the O atoms in MnO4- and the empty P orbitals of the Al atoms in Al2O3 crystal leading to the even-more electron deficient state of MnO4-. The excellent reusability of Al2O3, the good performance on degradation of 2,4-DBP in real water, the satisfactory degradation of fixed-bed reactor, and the enhanced removal of 6 other phenolic pollutants demonstrated that the KMnO4/Al2O3 system has satisfactory potential industrial application value. This study offers evidence for the improvement of highly-efficient MnO4- oxidation systems.

Degradation of Sulfamethoxazole by Manganese(IV) Oxide in the Presence of Humic Acid: Role of Stabilized Semiquinone Radicals

In this work, we demonstrate for the first time the abatement of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) induced by stabilized ortho-semiquinone radicals (o-SQ•-) in the MnO2-mediated system in the presence of humic acid. To evaluate the performance of different MnO2/mediator systems, 16 mediators are examined for their effects on MnO2 reactions with SMX. The key role of the bidentate Mn(II)-o-SQ• complex and MnO2 surface in stabilizing SQ•- is revealed. To illustrate the formation of the Mn(II)-o-SQ• complex, electron spin resonance, cyclic voltammetry, and mass spectra were used. To demonstrate the presence of o-SQ• on the MnO2 surface, EDTA was used to quench Mn(II)-o-SQ•. The high stability of o-SQ•- on the MnO2 surface is attributed to the higher potential of o-SQ•- (0.9643 V) than the MnO2 surface (0.8598 V) at pH 7.0. The SMX removal rate constant by different stabilized o-SQ• at pH 7.0 ranges from 0.0098 to 0.2252 min-1. The favorable model is the rate constant ln (kobs, 7.0) = 6.002EHOMO(o-Qred) + 33.744(ELUMO(o-Q) - EHOMO(o-Qred)) - 32.800, whose parameters represent the generation and reactivity of o-SQ•, respectively. Moreover, aniline and cystine are competitive substrates for SMX in coupling o-SQ•-. Due to the abundance of humic constituents in aquatic environments, this finding sheds light on the low-oxidant-demand, low-carbon, and highly selective removal of sulfonamide antibiotics.

Permanganate activation with Mn oxides at different oxidation states: Insight into the surface-promoted electron transfer mechanism

The development of new strategies to improve the removal of organic pollutants with permanganate (KMnO₄) is a hot topic in water treatment. While Mn oxides have been extensively used in Advanced Oxidation Processes through an electron transfer mechanism, the field of KMnO₄ activation remains relatively unexplored. Interestingly, this study has discovered that Mn oxides with high oxidation states including γ-MnOOH, α-Mn₂O₃ and α-MnO₂, exhibited excellent performance to degrade phenols and antibiotics in the presence of KMnO₄. The MnO₄^- species initially formed stable complexes with the surface Mn(III/IV) species and showed an increased oxidation potential and electron transfer reactivity, caused by the electron-withdrawing capacity of the Mn species acting as Lewis acids. Conversely, for MnO and γ-Mn₃O₄ with Mn(II) species, they reacted with KMnO₄ to produce cMnO₂ with very low activity for phenol degradation. The direct electron transfer mechanism in α-MnO₂/KMnO₄ system was further confirmed through the inhibiting effect of acetonitrile and the galvanic oxidation process. Moreover, the adaptability and reusability of α-MnO₂ in complicated waters indicated its potential for application in water treatment. Overall, the findings shed light on the development of Mn-based catalysts for organic pollutants degradation via KMnO₄ activation and understanding of the surface-promoted mechanism.

Could manganate be an alternative of permanganate for micropollutant abatement?

Permanganate (MnO₄^-), an oxidant that has been applied in water treatment, has highly varied reactivity toward pollutants. In this study, we found manganate (MnO₄^2-) could destruct diverse functional groups, with oxidation rates being higher than that of permanganate under acidic and neutral conditions. Mechanistic study revealed manganate rapidly disproportionated to permanganate and colloidal MnO₂ in solution. Under acidic conditions, the in-situ formed colloidal MnO₂ possess higher reactivity than permanganate and primarily contributed to the degradation of pollutants. The reactivity of in-situ formed colloidal MnO₂ is highly sensitive to pH and decreased dramatically with increasing pH. Consequently, the contribution of MnO₂ to pollutant removal decreased with elevating pH, which also leads to the decreased degradation efficiency of micropollutants at high pH. Manganate is an intermediate produced during the manufacturing process of permanganate. This study indicates that manganate might be an alternative of permanganate for water purification under acidic and neutral conditions.

Roles of MnO2 Colloids and Mn(III) during the Oxidation of Organic Contaminants by Permanganate

Although intermediate manganese species can be generated during the reactions of permanganate (Mn(VII)) with organic pollutants in water, the role of the in situ generated MnO₂ colloids in the Mn(VII) oxidation process remained controversial and the contribution of Mn(III) was largely neglected. This study showed that the apparent second-order rate constants (k_app) of Mn(VII) oxidation of methyl phenyl sulfoxide and carbamazepine remained constant with time. However, the degradation of four selected phenolic contaminants by Mn(VII) exhibited an autoaccelerating trend and a linear trend at pH 3.0-6.0 and pH 7.0-9.0, respectively. Multiple lines of evidence revealed that the occurrence of the autoaccelerating trend in the Mn(VII) oxidation process was ascribed to the oxidation of the phenolic organics by MnO₂ colloids. The influence of pyrophosphate on the oxidation of different organic contaminants by MnO₂ colloids suggests that Mn(III) was also responsible for the autoaccelerating oxidation of organic contaminants by Mn(VII) under specific reaction conditions. The kinetic models revealed that the overall contributions of MnO₂ colloids and Mn(III) ranged within 6.6-67.9% during the autoaccelerating oxidation of phenolic contaminants by Mn(VII). These findings advance the understanding of the roles of MnO₂ colloids and Mn(III) in the Mn(VII) oxidation process.

Abatement of Organic Contaminants by Mn(VII)/TEMPOs: Effects of TEMPOs Structure, Organic Contaminant Speciation, and Active Oxidizing Species

In this study, a representative redox mediator, 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl (TEMPO), and its para-substituted derivatives (TEMPOs: 4-hydroxyl-TEMPO, 4-acetylamino-TEMPO, and 4-amino-TEMPO) significantly accelerated the abatement of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs, i.e., bisphenol-A (BPA), phenol, amines, and phenylbutazone) by Mn(VII) over a wide pH range of 4.0-9.0. The addition of substituents at para to the > N-O^• moiety significantly influenced the degradation kinetics of TrOCs by changing the reduction potentials of TEMPOs and the corresponding oxoammonium cations (TEMPOs⁺); a linear relationship was observed between the substituents' para Hammett sigma constants and the reduction potentials of TEMPOs and TEMPOs⁺. Pseudo-first-order reaction rate constants (k_obs, min^-1) of TrOC degradation by Mn(VII)/TEMPOs were also affected by the pK_a of the TrOCs. Generally, the highest k_obs values for individual TrOCs were observed at pH near the pK_a even for TEMPOs⁺ with relatively pH-invariant reduction potentials. Overall, TrOC abatement kinetics were related to a combination of reactive species (Mn(VII), in situ formed MnO₂, and TEMPOs⁺). For BPA, the relative contributions (R) of reactive species ranked as R(TEMPOs⁺) > R(Mn(VII)) > R(in situ formed MnO₂) at pH 4.0-8.0, whereas R(Mn(VII)) > R(TEMPOs⁺) at pH 9.0 mainly owing to a change in BPA speciation as the pH approached the pK_a1 value for BPA. The results of this study are useful for the development of heterogeneous TEMPO-based redox mediators and future applications of TEMPO-mediated oxidation systems for accelerated abatement of TrOCs in water.

Enhanced degradation of emerging contaminants by permanganate/quinone process: Case study with bisphenol A

Permanganate (Mn(VII)) is widely used as a mild oxidant in water treatment. However, the reaction rates of some emerging contaminants with Mn(VII) are extremely low. In this study, benzoquinone (BQ), a redox mediator with the important component in dissolved organic matter (DOM), enhanced the oxidation of bisphenol A (BPA) by Mn(VII) in a wide pH range of 4.0-10.0. The redox cycle of BQ would produce semiquinone radicals, which could act as ligands to stabilize the formed Mn(III) in the system to promote the oxidation of BPA. Notably, the presence of BQ might promote the formation of MnO₂. A novel mechanism was proposed that singlet oxygen (¹O₂), Mn(III)-ligands (Mn(III)-L) and in-situ formed MnO₂ were the main contributors to accelerate BPA degradation in the Mn(VII)/BQ system. Under acidic conditions, the in-situ formed MnO₂ involved in the redox reaction and part of the Mn(IV) was reduced to Mn(III), indicating that the electron transfer of BQ promoted the formation of active Mn species and enhanced the Mn(VII) oxidation performance. Semiquinone radicals generated by BQ transformation would couple with the hydrogen substitution products of BPA to inhibit BPA self-coupling and promote the ring-opening reactions of BPA. Mn(VII)/BQ had better effect in raw water than in pure water, indicating that the Mn(VII)/BQ system has high potential for practical application. This study provided insights into the role of DOM in enhancing the Mn(VII) oxidation in water treatment.

Mn2O3 as an Electron Shuttle between Peroxymonosulfate and Organic Pollutants: The Dominant Role of Surface Reactive Mn(IV) Species

The environmentally benign Mn oxides play a crucial role in the transformation of organic contaminants, either through catalytically decomposing oxidants, e.g., peroxymonosulfate (PMS), or through directly oxidizing the target pollutants. Because of their dual roles and the complex surface chemical reactions, the mechanism involved in Mn oxide-catalyzed PMS activation processes remains obscure. Here, we clearly elucidate the mechanism involved in the Mn₂O₃ catalyzed PMS activation process by means of separating the PMS activation and the pollutant oxidation process. Mn₂O₃ acts as a shuttle that mediates the electron transfer from organic substrates to PMS, accompanied by the redox cycle of surface Mn(IV)/Mn(III). Multiple experimental results indicate that PMS is bound to the surface of Mn₂O₃ to form an inner-sphere complex, which then decomposes to form long-lived surface reactive Mn(IV) species, without the generation of sulfate radicals (SO₄^•-) and hydroxyl radicals (HO^•). The surface reactive Mn(IV) species are proposed to be responsible for the degradation of organic contaminants (e.g., phenol) and the formation of singlet oxygen (¹O₂), followed by the regeneration of the surface Mn(III) sites on Mn₂O₃. This study advances the fundamental understanding of the underlying mechanism involved in transition metal oxide-catalyzed PMS activation processes.

Methyl silicate promotes the oxidative degradation of bisphenol A by permanganate: Efficiency enhancement mechanism and solid-liquid separation characteristics

Permanganate (Mn (VII)) is an environmentally-friendly mild oxidant in the field of advanced oxidation treatment, however, manganese colloids are produced as byproducts, which is difficult to separate from water, resulting in secondary pollution. This study used potassium methyl silicates (PMS) as surface modifiers to improve the aggregation of colloidal particles by increasing the hydrophobicity of the colloidal surface, and then explored the oxidation of bisphenol A (BPA) by Mn (VII) under the influence of potassium methyl silicate and the solid-liquid separation performance of the reaction system. The results showed that PMS and sodium silicate (SS) substantially enhanced the degradation of BPA by Mn (VII), and the promotion effect of potassium methyl silicate was greater than that of sodium silicate. PMS provided not only enough adsorption sites for MnO₂ colloidal particles formed in the reaction process, but also reaction space for Mn (VII) to catalyze the oxidation of BPA. PMS combined with the hydroxyl group of MnO₂ through hydrogen bonds and forms hydrophobic PMS-MnO₂ complexes which accelerated sedimentation by polycondensation. The strong adsorption ability of in situ formed MnO₂ colloids also accelerated the deposition of PMS-MnO₂ complex. This study solved the low efficiency problem of Mn (VII) oxidation degradation of organic pollutants and difficult separation of manganese containing colloids and provided a new strategy for the efficient utilization of Mn (VII).

Dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction and diffuse reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy for iodate determination in food grade salt and food samples

A novel method based on diffused reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (DRS-FTIR) was employed for iodate determination in food grade salt and food products. The method attained sensitivity that was comparable to or better than that in most of the contemporary spectrophotometric methods. This was realized through a combination of azo dye formation and dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction of dye when a 37-fold enrichment was obtained. FT-IR enabled integrating alternative target peak, and freedom in sample solvent composition relative to UV-visible spectrophotometry where the solvent polarity, pH, and presence of ions may affect the spectral properties of the measurable coloured species. Food samples containing iodide or covalently bonded iodine were oxidized with alkaline permanganate for mineralization and iodate formation. Optimization of both reaction conditions was carried out by means of response surface methodology. The method had a linear range 0.04-10 mg kg^-1 iodate and limit of detection of 4.4 µg kg^-1.

Degradation pathways of penthiopyrad by δ-MnO2 mediated processes: a combined density functional theory and experimental study

Penthiopyrad is a widely used succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor (SDHI) fungicide and frequently detected in natural environments. In order to better understand its fate in natural systems, the degradation of penthiopyrad by manganese dioxide (MnO₂) was investigated in this study. The results show that penthiopyrad is rapidly degraded in the δ-MnO₂ system. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the atoms of C18, C12, and S1 in penthiopyrad have relatively high reactive active sites. The degradation products mainly include sulfoxides, sulfones, and diketone. A sulfoxide and sulfone are formed by the oxidation of the thioether group, and diketone is formed by the oxidation of the olefin group, respectively. Based on the DFT calculations and degradation products, the degradation pathway of penthiopyrad by MnO₂ is proposed. This study also reveals that the degradation of penthiopyrad by δ-MnO₂ is affected by various environmental factors. A warm environment, low pH, and co-existing humic acid are beneficial to the degradation of penthiopyrad in the δ-MnO₂ system, whereas, co-existing metal cations inhibit penthiopyrad degradation. This result provides theoretical guidance for predicting the potential fate of penthiopyrad in natural environments.

Novel manganese cycling at very low ionic strengths in the Columbia River Estuary

Mixing of waters of different ionic strengths induces the geochemical cycling of reactive elements. The most reactive zone is where the gradient in ionic strength is steepest. In oxygenated systems, the redox-active metal manganese cycles between soluble and particulate fractions through three oxidation states, manganese(II), manganese(III) and manganese(IV). This cycling strongly affects the mobility of inorganic and organic chemicals. The most accessible environmental system where waters with different ionic strengths mix are estuaries. During six Eulerian studies in the Columbia River Estuary, each up to 26 h, we measured manganese speciation and concentration across a salinity (S_P) gradient centred around S_P = 0.06-6, equivalent to a seawater ionic strength (I_Sp) of 1.2-120 mM. This zone, representing the region between freshwater and the more intensively studied estuarine turbidity maximum, presents a highly dynamic geochemical environment in which the manganese cycle propagates through four steps as I_Sp increases due to mixing: 1. Before a measurable change in I_Sp, manganese, as particulate manganese(III/IV) oxides (MnO_x), undergoes reduction, independent of photochemical processes, to soluble manganese(III) stabilized in organic complexes (Mn(III)-L) and manganese(II); 2. As I_Sp increases between 5 and 80 mM, Mn(III)-L reduction continues and manganese(II) adsorbs onto particle surfaces; 3. As I_Sp increases further, though remaining below 80 mM (S_P ≈ 4), adsorbed manganese(II) desorbs and/or is oxidized and is released as Mn(III)-L or oxidises further to MnO_x; 4. The breakdown of Mn(III)-L complexes leads to higher manganese(II) and MnO_x, which at Mid-Estuary-Salinities (I_Sp = 320-480 mM) precipitates. This manganese cycling in low I_Sp waters directly affects a system's redox chemistry and provides a window into understanding the extensive, yet hidden, freshwater/saline water interface in aquifers, soils, sediments and estuaries.

Evaluation of Corrosion Inhibition of 316L Stainless Steel by Permanganate Ions in Chloride Solution

The efficiency of permanganates to inhibit the scale deposit captured the attention for more investigation on their role as corrosion inhibitor. In this article, the effect of permanganate as corrosion inhibitor on 316L stainless steel in NaCl solution is investigated. The potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) have been performed by varying the electrode stirring speed, the concentration of permanganate ions, pH and the temperature. The results show that the permanganate ions increase the cathodic and anodic currents under effect of stirring speed, due to oxygen reduction reaction and the reduction of permanganate ions. Electrochemical results indicate that the deposit of manganese oxide (MnO2) inhibits the pitting corrosion. The inhibition efficiency is up to 98 % for 10−4 mol.dm−3 of permanganate. The temperature reduces the effectiveness of permanganates against pitting corrosion, the pitting potential shifts cathodically from +0.395 V vs. Saturated Calomel Electrode (SCE) at 298 K to +0.275 V vs. SCE at 343 K. Surface morphology of the deposit oxide films and electrode are studied by emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared and Differential Scanning Calorimetry. The analysis of the deposit layer by X-ray diffraction revealed the presence of δ-MnO2 form, with a crystallite size of 3.17 nm.  Copyright © 2021 by Authors, Published by BCREC Group. Role of TEMPO in Enhancing Permanganate Oxidation toward Organic Contaminants

Permanganate (Mn(VII)) has been widely applied as an oxidant in water treatment plants. However, compared with ozone, Fenton, and other advanced oxidation processes, the reaction rates of some trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) with Mn(VII) are relatively low. Therefore, further studies on the strategies for enhancing the oxidation of organic contaminants by Mn(VII) are valuable. In this work, 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl (TEMPO), as an electron shuttle, enhanced Mn(VII) oxidation toward various TrOCs (i.e., bisphenol A (BPA), phenol, estrone, sulfisoxazole, etc.). TEMPO sped up the oxidative kinetics of BPA by Mn(VII) greatly, and this enhancement was observed at a wide pH range of 4.0-11.0. The exact mechanism of TEMPO in Mn(VII) oxidation was described briefly as follows: (i) TEMPO was oxidized by Mn(VII) to its oxoammonium cation (TEMPO⁺) by electron transfer, which was the reactive species responsible for the accelerated degradation of TrOCs and (ii) TEMPO⁺ could decompose TrOCs rapidly with itself back to TEMPO or TEMPOH (TEMPO hydroxylamine). To further illustrate the interaction between TEMPO and target TrOCs, we explored the transformation pathways of BPA in Mn(VII)/TEMPO oxidation. Compared to Mn(VII) alone, adding TEMPO into the Mn(VII) solution significantly suppressed BPA's self-coupling and promoted hydroxylation, ring-opening, and decarboxylation. Moreover, the Mn(VII)/TEMPO system was promising for the abatement of TrOCs in real waters for humic acid, and ubiquitous cations/anions had no adverse or even beneficial impact on the Mn(VII)/TEMPO system.
