Advanced super-hydrophobic polymer-based porous absorbents for the treatment of oil-polluted water

Isotherm and kinetic studies on adsorption of gasoline and kerosene using jujube and barberry tree stem powder and commercially available activated carbon

Herein, the application of granular activated carbon, jujube, and barberry tree stem powder for the removal of gasoline and kerosene from water was investigated. Kerosene removal rates upwards of 68.48, 83.87, and 99.02% were achieved using jujube tree stem powder, barberry tree stem powder, and granular activated carbon, respectively. Besides, gasoline removal rates upwards of 69.35, 55.02, and 95.59% were attained using jujube tree stem powder, barberry tree stem powder, and granular activated carbon, respectively. Isotherm data were further investigated and fitted using Langmuir, Freundlich, and Elovich models. The results indicated that the adsorption onto jujube adsorbent is a multilayer adsorption process over a heterogeneous surface, which is best illustrated by the Temkin (Ave. R2= 0.95) model. It was found that the Temkin isotherm (Ave. R2= 0.81) best describes the properties of barberry stem powder in the adsorption of gasoline and kerosene from water. Moreover, the best models to describe the characteristics of granular activated carbon in the adsorption of gasoline and kerosene from water were Freundlich (Ave. R2= 0.74) and Langmuir (Ave. R2= 0.73) isotherms, respectively. The adsorption kinetics showed that the pseudo-second-order was appropriate in modeling the adsorption kinetics of gasoline and kerosene to the studied adsorbents (R2>0.74).

New Approach for Preparation of Porous Polymers with Reversible Pore Structures for a Highly Safe Smart Supercapacitor

Porous polymers have many industrial applications, but their pore structures (open or closed) are usually fixed during polymerization. In this study, polymers with reversible and controllable pore structures, namely, thermosensitive porous hydrogels with regulated volume phase transition temperature, were prepared using a Pickering high-internal-phase emulsion as the template. Upon heating, the hydrogels transformed not only in their wettability (between hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity with water contact angles of 21.8 and 100.9°) but also their pore structure (between open through-holes and closed holes with pore throat sizes of 15.58 and 0 μm, respectively) in a short time (<10 s). When the hydrogel was used as a separator in smart supercapacitors (SCs), this behavior effectively limited the path of electrolyte migration, reducing the chance of conflagration accidents. Moreover, by utilizing the highly reversible pore structures and wettability of the porous hydrogel, reversible charging and discharging were restored after the system cooled down. This work not only provides great guidance for preparing porous polymers with reversible pore structures but also paves the way for designing smart SCs with enhanced safety.

Sustainable polyurethane for the remediation of oil spills: a review

Catastrophic oil spill is one of the major issues to the environment. Various methods have been used to treat oil spillage including in situ burning, the use of skimmers, dispersants, bioremediation, dispersing agents, oil sorbents, and biological agents. Application of oil sorbent is one of the effective solutions in oil spill clean-up. Polymers are sustainable extraordinary materials for the treatment of oil spillage due to their special physicochemical characteristics such as high porosity, good hydrophobicity, and reusability. Polymers are modified using suitable chemical reagents and their hydrophobicity is enhanced, making them suitable for oil spill clean-up. The present manuscript is an attempt to summarize the study of chemical modifications done on a polymer polyurethane (PU) for achieving the desirable properties, for efficient oil spill clean-up. A patent analysis has been carried out for the leading countries, top inventors, leading assignees, trends of patent publications, citation analysis, and summary of granted patents in the area of the use of a polymer Polyurethane (PU) for oil spill clean-up.

3D Oleophilic Sorbent Films Based on Recycled Low-Density Polyethylene

Recycling low-end, one-time-use plastics-such as low-density polyethylene (LDPE)-is of paramount importance to combat plastic pollution and promote sustainability in the modern green economy. This study valorizes LDPE waste by transforming it into 3D oleophilic swellable thin films through a process involving dissolution, phase separation, and extraction. These films are subsequently layered using a customized polypropylene (PP) based nonwoven fabric separator and securely sealed in a zigzag pattern. The zigzag-shaped seal enhances the adhesion of pollutants to the sorbent by providing wire curvatures that increase retention time and uptake capacity. As a result, the sorbent exhibits impressive oil uptake capacities, with immediate and equilibrium values of 120 g/g and 85 g/g, respectively. Notably, the as-prepared sorbent demonstrates low water retention and high selectivity for oil, outperforming commercially available oil sorbents. The unique design involving a 3D-film structure, superposed films, and a zigzag-shaped seal offers a sustainable and value-added solution to the issues of LDPE waste and oil spills on water surfaces.

Aggregation, toxicity, and biodegradability study of an ionic liquid-based formulation for effective oil spill remediation

Chemical dispersants are extensively used for marine oil spill remediation. However, the increased toxicity and low biodegradability of these dispersants restrict their employment in the marine environment. Hence, in this work, we have developed an eco-friendly formulation composed of an ionic liquid,1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium lauroyl sarcosinate [BMIM][Lausar] and sorbitan monooleate (Span) 80. Micellar and interfacial parameters, dispersion effectiveness, as well as the toxicity and biodegradability of the developed formulation were investigated. Micellar properties confirmed a high degree of synergism among the surfactant molecules and the formation of stable micelle. The dispersion effectiveness, at dispersant-to-oil ratio (DOR) of 1:25 (v/v), against three crude oils (Arab, Ratawi, and Doba) was assessed. We achieved a dispersion effectiveness of 68.49%, 74.05%, and 83.43% for Ratawi, Doba, and Arab crude oil, respectively, using a 70:30 (w/w) ratio of Span 80 to [BMIM][Lausar]. Furthermore, the results obtained from optical microscopy and particle size analysis (PSA) indicated that the oil droplet size decreased with higher DOR. Additionally, acute toxicity experiments were conducted on zebrafish (Danio rerio) using the developed formulation, confirming its non-toxic behavior, with LC50 values of 800 mg/L after 96 h. The formulation also exhibited high biodegradability, with only 25.01% of the original quantity remaining after 28 days. Hence, these results suggest that the new formulation has the potential to be a highly effective and environmentally friendly dispersant for oil spill remediation.

The effect of chemical bond and solvent solubility parameter on stability and absorption value of functionalized PU sponge

Seawater pollution from various sources such as industrial effluents, ship washing at sea, and oil spills harm humans and the marine environment. Therefore, finding ways to eliminate this pollution is crucial. This study successfully modified a polyurethane sponge through a simple dip-coating method with functionalized graphene oxide incorporating octadecylamine and oleic acid, resulting in a hydrophobic sponge capable of absorbing crude oil and various organic solvents. Characterization analyses confirmed the synthesis. The absorption capacity of the modified sponges was examined, for example, the PU sponge has absorbed 4 g/g engine oil, while the modified GO-ODA-PU sponge has increased its absorption to 36 g/g. The GO-ODA-PU sponge demonstrated great reusability compared to the GO-OA-PU sponge owing to the strong covalent bond formed between GO and ODA, which is superior to the weak hydrogen bond formed between GO and OA. The absorption capacity of the GO-OA-PU sponge decreased by 30%. The contact angle test showed that GO-ODA-PU and GO-OA-PU sponges had contact angles of 131° and 115°, respectively. Additionally, the GO-ODA-PU sponge performed optimally for semi-polar solvents in the solubility parameter range of 18-19, with its absorption capacity reaching its maximum value. The amount of oil recycling is even possible up to 98%.

A biomimetic design for efficient petrochemical spill disposal: CoFe-PBA modified superhydrophobic melamine sponge with mechanical/chemical durability and low fire risk

Due to frequent petrochemical spills, environmental pollution and the threat of secondary marine fires have arisen, necessitating an urgent need for petrochemical spill treatment strategies with high-performance oil-water separation capabilities. To address the challenges of poor durability, instability in hydrophobic conditions, and difficulty in absorbing high-viscosity crude oil associated with hydrophobic absorbent materials, the authors of this study took inspiration from the unique micro and nanostructures of springtails' water-repellent skin. We engineered a superhydrophobic melamine sponge using interfacial assembly techniques designated as Si@PBA@PDA@MS. This material demonstrated improved mechanical and chemical durability, enhanced photothermal performance, and reduced fire risk. The metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived cobalt-iron Prussian blue analog (CoFe-PBA) was firmly anchored to the sponge framework by the chelation of cobalt ions using polydopamine (PDA). The results demonstrated that Si@PBA@PDA@MS demonstrated excellent superhydrophobicity (WCA=163.5°) and oil absorption capacity (53.4-97.5 g/g), maintaining high durability even after 20 cycles of absorption-squeezing. Additionally, it could still exhibit excellent mechanical properties, hydrophobic stability, and absorption performance across a wide temperature range (0-100 °C), pH range (1-14), and high compression strength (ε = 80%), with excellent mechanical/chemical durability. Furthermore, Si@PBA@PDA@MS demonstrated remarkable photothermal performance and low fire risk, offering efficient, safe, and sustainable practical value for effective petrochemical spill treatment.

Designing super-fast trimodal sponges using recycled polypropylene for organics cleanup

Sorbent pads and films have been commonly used for environmental remediation purposes, but designing their internal structure to optimize access to the entire volume while ensuring cost-effectiveness, ease of fabrication, sufficient strength, and reusability remains challenging. Herein, we report a trimodal sorbent film from recycled polypropylene (PP) with micropores, macro-voids, and sponge-like 3D cavities, developed through selective dissolution, thermally induced phase separation, and annealing. The sorbent has hundreds of cavities per cm2 that are capable of swelling up to twenty-five times its thickness, allowing for super-fast saturation kinetics (within 30 s) and maximum oil sorption (97 g/g). The sorption mechanism follows a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Moreover, the sorbent is easily compressible, and its structure is retained during oil sorption, desorption, and resorption, resulting in 96.5% reuse efficiency. The oil recovery process involves manually squeezing the film, making the cleanup process efficient with no chemical treatment required. The sorbent film possesses high porosity for effective sorption with sufficient tensile strength for practical applications. Our integrated technique results in a strengthened porous polymeric structure that can be tailored according to end-use applications. This study provides a sustainable solution for waste management that offers versatility in its functionality.

Environmentally Friendly Plastic Boats - A Facile Strategy for Cleaning Oil Spills on Water with Excellent Efficiency

In this report, we demonstrate a novel plastic boat capable of selectively and efficiently collecting spilled oils while floating on water. The boat has macroscopic openings in its vertical and curved sidewalls. It is easily, quickly, and inexpensively fabricated using an environmentally friendly polymer via a three-dimensional printing technique. Its surface is sequentially coated with nano-ceramic coating liquid and oil, which imparts favorable hydrophobic, oleophilic, and high oil-wettability properties. Using the boat prototype, a small pump system, and an oil boom-like device, we demonstrate that spilled oils with a wide range of viscosities (2.0-1000 cSt at 25-40 °C) are rapidly collected from the surface of both pure water and seawater. Remarkably, it efficiently collects oil spills on seawater under wavy conditions, and the retrieved oil does not mix with any drop of water. Moreover, the boat can be scaled up to a large size easily and has a long-term usage. By exhibiting these characteristics, our developed boat is a prominent potential device for practical oil retrieval applications.

Threats, challenges and sustainable conservation strategies for freshwater biodiversity

Increasing human population, deforestation and man-made climate change are likely to exacerbate the negative effects on freshwater ecosystems and species endangerment. Consequently, the biodiversity of freshwater continues to dwindle at an alarming rate. However, this particular topic lacks sufficient attention from conservation ecologists and policymakers, resulting in a dearth of data and comprehensive reviews on freshwater biodiversity, specifically. Despite the widespread awareness of risks to freshwater biodiversity, organized action to reverse this decline has been lacking. This study reviews prospective conservation and management strategies for freshwater biodiversity and their associated challenges, identifying current key threats to freshwater biodiversity. Engineered nanomaterials pose a significant threat to aquatic species, and will make controlling health risks to freshwater biodiversity increasingly challenging in the future. When fish are exposed to nanoparticles, the surface area of their respiratory and ion transport systems can decline to 60% of their total surface area, posing serious health risks. Also, about 50% of freshwater fish species are threatened by climate change, globally. Freshwater biodiversity that is heavily reliant on calcium perishes when the calcium content of their environments degrades, posing another severe threat to world biodiversity. To improve biodiversity, variables such as species diversity, population and water quality, and habitat are essential components that must be monitored continuously. Existing research on freshwater biota and ecosystems is still lacking. Therefore, data collection and the establishment of specialized policies for the conservation of freshwater biodiversity should be prioritized.

Introducing Polar Groups in Porous Aromatic Framework for Achieving High Capacity of Organic Molecules and Enhanced Self-Cleaning Applications

Due to the frequent oil/organic solvent leakage, efficient oil/water separation has attracted extensive concern. However, conventional porous materials possess nonpolar building units, which reveal relatively weak affinity for polar organic molecules. Here, two different polarities of superhydrophobic porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) were synthesized with respective orthoposition and paraposition C=O groups in the PAF linkers. The conjugated structure formed by a large number of alkynyl and benzene ring structures enabled porous and superhydrophobic quality of PAFs. After the successful preparation of the PAF solids, PAF powders were coated on polyester fabrics by a simple dip-coating method, which endowed the resulting polyester fabrics with superhydrophobicity, porosity, and excellent stability. Based on the unique structure, the oil/water separation efficiency of two superhydrophobic flexible fabrics was more than 90% for various organic solvents. Polar LNU-26 PAF showed better separation performance for the polar oils. This work takes the lead in adopting the polar groups as building units for the preparation of porous networks, which has great guiding significance for the construction of advanced oil/water separation materials.

Super-Hydrophobic Magnetic Fly Ash Coated Polydimethylsiloxane (MFA@PDMS) Sponge as an Absorbent for Rapid and Efficient Oil/Water Separation

In this study, magnetic fly ash was prepared with fly ash and nano-magnetic Fe₃O₄, obtained by co-precipitation. Then, a magnetic fly ash/polydimethylsiloxane (MFA@PDMS) sponge was prepared via simple dip-coating PDMS containing ethanol in magnetic fly ash aqueous suspension and solidifying, whereby Fe₃O₄ played a vital role in achieving the uniformity of the FA particle coating on the skeletons of the sponge. The presence of the PDMS matrix made the sponge super-hydrophobic with significant lubricating oil absorption capacity; notably, it took only 10 min for the material to adsorb six times its own weight of n-hexane (oil phase). Moreover, the MFA@PDMS sponge demonstrated outstanding recyclability and stability, since no decline in absorption efficiency was observed after more than eight cycles. Furthermore, the stress–strain curves of 20 compression cycles presented good overlap, i.e., the maximum stress was basically unchanged, and the sponge was restored to its original shape, indicating that it had good mechanical properties, elasticity, and fatigue resistance.

Superhydrophilic–superhydrophobic patterned surfaces: From simplified fabrication to emerging applications

Superhydrophilic–superhydrophobic patterned surfaces constitute a branch of surface chemistry involving the two extreme states of superhydrophilicity and superhydrophobicity combined on the same surface in precise patterns. Such surfaces have many advantages, including controllable wettability, enrichment ability, accessibility, and the ability to manipulate and pattern water droplets, and they offer new functionalities and possibilities for a wide variety of emerging applications, such as microarrays, biomedical assays, microfluidics, and environmental protection. This review presents the basic theory, simplified fabrication, and emerging applications of superhydrophilic–superhydrophobic patterned surfaces. First, the fundamental theories of wettability that explain the spreading of a droplet on a solid surface are described. Then, the fabrication methods for preparing superhydrophilic–superhydrophobic patterned surfaces are introduced, and the emerging applications of such surfaces that are currently being explored are highlighted. Finally, the remaining challenges of constructing such surfaces and future applications that would benefit from their use are discussed.

Remediation of heavy metal polluted waters using activated carbon from lignocellulosic biomass: An update of recent trends

The use of a cheap and effective adsorption approach based on biomass-activated carbon (AC) to remediate heavy metal contamination is clearly desirable for developing countries that are economically disadvantaged yet have abundant biomass. Therefore, this review provides an update of recent works utilizing biomass waste-AC to adsorb commonly-encountered adsorbates like Cr, Pb, Cu, Cd, Hg, and As. Various biomass wastes were employed in synthesizing AC via two-steps processing; oxygen-free carbonization followed by activation. In recent works related to the activation step, the microwave technique is growing in popularity compared to the more conventional physical/chemical activation method because the microwave technique can ensure a more uniform energy distribution in the solid adsorbent, resulting in enhanced surface area. Nonetheless, chemical activation is still generally preferred for its ease of operation, lower cost, and shorter preparation time. Several mechanisms related to heavy metal adsorption on biomass wastes-AC were also discussed in detail, such as (i) - physical adsorption/deposition of metals, (ii) - ion-exchange between protonated oxygen-containing functional groups (-OH, -COOH) and divalent metal cations (M²⁺), (iii) - electrostatic interaction between oppositely-charged ions, (iv) - surface complexation between functional groups (-OH, O^2-, -CO-NH-, and -COOH) and heavy metal ions/complexes, and (v) - precipitation/co-precipitation technique. Additionally, key parameters affecting the adsorption performance were scrutinized. In general, this review offers a comprehensive insight into the production of AC from lignocellulosic biomass and its application in treating heavy metals-polluted water, showing that biomass-originated AC could bring great benefits to the environment, economy, and sustainability.

Evolution in mitigation approaches for petroleum oil-polluted environment: recent advances and future directions

Increasing petroleum consumption and a rise in incidental oil spillages have become global concerns owing to their aquatic and terrestrial toxicity. Various physicochemical and biological treatment strategies have been studied to tackle them and their impact on environment. One of such approaches in this regard is the use of microbial processes due to their being "green" and also apparent low cost and high effectiveness. This review presents the advancement in the physical and biological remediation methods and their progressive efficacy if employed in combination of hybrid modes. The use of biosurfactants and/or biochar along with microbes seems to be a more effective bioremediation approach as compared to their individual effects. The lacuna in research at community or molecular level has been overcome by the recent introduction of "-omics" technology in hydrocarbon degradation. Thus, the review further focuses on presenting the state-of-art information on the advancement of petroleum bioremediation strategies and identifies the research gaps for achieving total mitigation of petroleum oil.

Novel fabrication of hydrophobic/oleophilic human hair fiber for efficient oil/water separation through one-pot dip-coating synthesis route

Frequent oil spill accidents and industrial wastewater discharge has always been one of the most severe worldwide environmental problems. To cope with this problem, many fluorine-containing and high-cost materials with superwettability have been extensively applied for oil-water separation, which hinders its large-scale application. In this work, a novel human hair fiber (HHF)-polymerized octadecylsiloxane (PODS) fiber was fabricated with a facile one-pot dip-coating synthesis approach, inspired by the self-assembly performance and hydrophobicity of OTS modification. The benefits of prominent hydrophobic/lipophilic behavior lie in the low surface energy, and a rough PODS coating was rationally adhered on the surface of HHF. Driven solely by gravity and capillary force, the HHF-PODS showed excellent oil/water separation efficiency (> 99.0%) for a wide range of heavy and light oil/water mixtures. In addition, HHF-PODS demonstrated durability toward different harsh environments like alkaline, acid, and salty solutions.

Superhydrophobic nanohybrid sponges for separation of oil/ water mixtures

The industrial revolution has led to different types of environmental pollution, including frequent leakage of crude oil to marine waters and the contamination of wastewater with immiscible or emulsified oils and organic liquids from various industrial residues. Hence, developing multifunctional materials for oil/water separation is a field of high significance for the remediation of oil-polluted water. Recently, advanced superwetting materials have been employed for oily wastewater treatment. This review summarizes the recent development in fabricating superhydrophobic/superoleophilic nanohybrid polyurethane, melamine, and cellulose sponges for oil/water separation. The use of organic and/or inorganic nanohybrid materials opens the horizon for designing a diverse and wide range of superhydrophobic sponges due to the synergistic effect between the surface roughness and chemical composition. The discussion is organized based on different classes of low surface energy materials including thermoplastics, thermosets, elastomers, fluorinated polymers, conductive polymers, organosilanes, long alkyl chain compounds, and hydrophobic carbon-based materials. Recent examples for the separation of both immiscible and emulsified oil/water mixtures are presented, with a focus on fabrication strategies, separation efficiency, recyclability, mechanical performance, and durability. Currently, most studies did not focus on the mechanical/chemical stability of the fabricated sponges, and hence, future research directions shall address the fabrication of robust and long-term durable superhydrophobic sponges with proper guidelines. Similarly, more research focus is required to design superhydrophobic sponges for the separation of emulsified oil/water mixtures and heavy crude oil samples. Superhydrophobic sponges can be employed for treatment of oily wastewater, emulsion separation, and cleanup of crude oil spills.

Critical review on negative emerging contaminant removal efficiency of wastewater treatment systems: Concept, consistency and consequences

Emerging contaminants (ECs) are not completely removed by wastewater treatment owing to their capabilities of making complexes, toxic derivatives, byproduct formation, and dynamic partitioning. Negative contaminant removal i.e., higher concentrations (up to 5731%) of these ECs in the effluent with respect to the influent sampled on the same occasions, is globally prevalent in almost all types of treatment systems. Conventional WWTPs showed the highest negative removal (NR) for Carbamazepine, and Carbadox. Conjugation-deconjugation, types of WWTPs, transformations, leaching, operational parameters, sampling schemes, and nature of substance governs the NR efficiencies. Among the various categories of micropollutants, pesticides and beta-blockers are reported to exhibit the maximum percentage of NR, posing threat to human and the environment. With > 200% of NR for beta-blockers, low blood-pressure related symptoms may likely to get more prevalent in the near future. Study red-flags this phenomenon of negative removal that needs urgent attention.

High positively charged Fe3O4 nanocomposites for efficient and recyclable demulsification of hexadecane-water micro-emulsion

Oily wastewater not only causes major environmental issues, but also threatens human health. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are an attractively alternative commercial demulsifiers for their recyclability and high surface area. The wettability and surface charge of magnetic materials are significant factors in oily wastewater treatment. However, the specific influence of surface charge on the demulsification performance has not been rigorously investigated. Herein, a series of MNPs coated by dimethyl-diallyl-ammonium chloride (PDDA) and fulvic acid (FA) (Fe₃O₄/FA/PDDA) with different surface positive charges were synthesized by adjusting the PDDA concentrations and applied in demulsification of hexadecane-water micro-emulsion. The oil-water separation efficiency (Es) was enhanced gradually with increasing the surface positive charge of demulsifiers. Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory confirmed that with increasing surface positive potential, the electrostatic attraction between demulsifiers and oil droplets increased, and thus, Es increased. In addition, the superior Es of Fe₃O₄/FA MNPs for hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB)-stabilized micro-emulsions and Fe₃O₄/FA/PDDA MNPs for sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-stabilized micro-emulsions further confirmed that electrostatic force was critical in demulsification. The high positively charged Fe₃O₄/FA/PDDA MNPs can be used as an efficient and recyclable demulsifier for hexadecane-water micro-emulsion. This study provides a theoretical basis for designing demulsifiers.

Heavy metal removal by biomass-derived carbon nanotubes as a greener environmental remediation: A comprehensive review

The concentrations of heavy metal ions found in waterways near industrial zones are often exceed the prescribed limits, posing a continued danger to the environment and public health. Therefore, greater attention has been devoted into finding the efficient solutions for adsorbing heavy metal ions. This review paper focuses on the synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) from biomass and their application in the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions. Techniques to produce CNTs, benefits of modification with various functional groups to enhance sorption uptake, effects of operating parameters, and adsorption mechanisms are reviewed. Adsorption occurs via physical adsorption, electrostatic interaction, surface complexation, and interaction between functional groups and heavy metal ions. Moreover, factors such as pH level, CNTs dosage, duration, temperature, ionic strength, and surface property of adsorbents have been identified as the common factors influencing the adsorption of heavy metals. The oxygenated functional groups initially present on the surface of the modified CNTs are responsible towards the adsorption enhancement of commonly-encountered heavy metals such as Pb²⁺, Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺, Co²⁺, Zn²⁺, Ni²⁺, Hg²⁺, and Cr⁶⁺. Despite the recent advances in the application of CNTs in environmental clean-up and pollution treatment have been demonstrated, major obstacles of CNTs such as high synthesis cost, the agglomeration in the post-treated solutions and the secondary pollution from chemicals in the surface modification, should be critically addressed in the future studies for successful large-scale applications of CNTs.

Recent Advances in the Fabrication and Environmental Science Applications of Cellulose Nanofibril-Based Functional Materials

Cellulose is one of the important biomass materials in nature and has shown wide applications in various fields from materials science, biomedicine, tissue engineering, wearable devices, energy, and environmental science, as well as many others. Due to their one-dimensional nanostructure, high specific surface area, excellent biodegradability, low cost, and high sustainability, cellulose nanofibrils/nanofibers (CNFs) have been widely used for environmental science applications in the last years. In this review, we summarize the advance in the design, synthesis, and water purification applications of CNF-based functional nanomaterials. To achieve this aim, we firstly introduce the synthesis and functionalization of CNFs, which are further extended for the formation of CNF hybrid materials by combining with other functional nanoscale building blocks, such as polymers, biomolecules, nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, and two-dimensional (2D) materials. Then, the fabrication methods of CNF-based 2D membranes/films, three-dimensional (3D) hydrogels, and 3D aerogels are presented. Regarding the environmental science applications, CNF-based nanomaterials for the removal of metal ions, anions, organic dyes, oils, and bio-contents are demonstrated and discussed in detail. Finally, the challenges and outlooks in this promising research field are discussed. It is expected that this topical review will guide and inspire the design and fabrication of CNF-based novel nanomaterials with high sustainability for practical applications.
