Recent progress of UCNPs-MoS2 nanocomposites as a platform for biological applications

Composite materials can take advantages of the functional benefits of multiple pure nanomaterials to a greater degree than single nanomaterials alone. The UCNPs-MoS2 composite is a nano-application platform that combines upconversion luminescence and photothermal properties. Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are inorganic nanomaterials with long-wavelength excitation and short-wavelength tunable emission capabilities, and are able to effectively convert near-infrared (NIR) light into visible light for increased photostability. However, UCNPs have a low capacity for absorbing visible light, whereas MoS2 shows better absorption in the ultraviolet and visible regions. By integrating the benefits of UCNPs and MoS2, UCNPs-MoS2 nanocomposites can convert NIR light with a higher depth of detection into visible light for application with MoS2 through fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), which compensates for the issues of MoS2's low tissue penetration light-absorbing wavelengths and expands its potential biological applications. Therefore, starting from the construction of UCNPs-MoS2 nanoplatforms, herein, we review the research progress in biological applications, including biosensing, phototherapy, bioimaging, and targeted drug delivery. Additionally, the current challenges and future development trends of UCNPs-MoS2 nanocomposites for biological applications are also discussed.

Fluorescence/electrochemical dual-mode strategy for Golgi protein 73 detection based on molybdenum disulfide/ferrocene/palladium nanoparticles and nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots

Golgi protein 73 (GP73) is a new serum marker associated with early diagnosis and postoperative assessment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Herein, an electrochemical/fluorescence dual-signal biosensor was designed for determination of GP73 based on molybdenum disulfide/ferrocene/palladium nanoparticles (MoS2-Fc-PdNPs) and nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs). GP73 aptamer (Apt) was labeled with NGQDs to form the NGQDs-Apt fluorescence probe. MoS2-Fc-PdNPs served not only as the fluorescence quencher but also as electrochemical enhancer. The sensing platform (NGQDs-Apt/MoS2-Fc-PdNPs) was formed based on the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanism. In the presence of GP73, the specific binding of NGQDs-Apt to GP73 interrupted FRET, restoring the fluorescence of NGQDs-Apt at λex/em = 348/438 nm and enhancing the oxidation current of Fc in MoS2-Fc-PdNPs at 0.04 V through differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Under the optimal conditions, the DPV current change and fluorescence recovery have a good linear relationship with GP73 concentration from 1.00 to 10.0 ng/mL. The calibration equation for the fluorescence mode was Y1 = (0.0213 ± 0.00127)X + (0.0641 ± 0.00448) and LOD was 0.812 ng/mL (S/N = 3). The calibration equation of the electrochemical mode was Y2 = (3.41 ± 0.111)X + (1.62 ± 0.731), and LOD of 0.0425 ng/mL (S/N = 3). The RSDs of fluorescence mode and electrochemical mode after serum detection were 1.62 to 5.21% and 0.180 to 6.62%, respectively. By combining the electrochemical and fluorescence assay, more comprehensive and valuable information for GP73 was provided. Such dual-mode detection platform shows excellent reproducibility, stability, and selectivity and has great application potential.

Development of an Innovative Colorimetric DNA Biosensor Based on Sugar Measurement

The development of biosensors for target detection plays a crucial role in advancing various fields of bioscience. This work presents the development of a genosensor that exploits the colorimetric phenol-sulfuric acid sugar reaction for the detection of DNA, and RNA as specific targets, and DNA intercalator molecules. The biosensor combines simplicity and reliability to create a novel bioassay for accurate and rapid analysis. A 96-well microplate based on a polystyrene polymer was used as the platform for an unmodified capture DNA immobilization via a silanization process and with (3-Aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES). After that, a hybridization step was carried out to catch the target molecule, followed by adding phenol and sulfuric acid to quantify the amount of DNA or RNA sugar backbone. This reaction generated a yellow-orange color on the wells measured at 490 nm, which was proportional to the target concentration. Under the optimum conditions, a calibration curve was obtained for each target. The developed biosensor demonstrated high sensitivity, good selectivity, and linear response over a wide concentration range for DNA and RNA targets. Additionally, the biosensor was successfully employed for the detection of DNA intercalator agents that inhibited the hybridization of DNA complementary to the immobilized capture DNA. The developed biosensor offers a potential tool for sensitive and selective detection in various applications, including virus diagnosis, genetic analysis, pathogenic bacteria monitoring, and drug discovery.

Biochar derived carbonaceous material for various environmental applications: Systematic review

Biochar is the solid material produced from the carbonization of organic feedstock biomass. This material has several unique characteristics such as greater carbon content, good electrical conductivity, high stability and large surface area, which can be applied in several research areas such as generation of power and wastewater treatment. In connection with this, recently, the investigations on biochar significantly focus on the removal of toxic heavy metals since the biochar material is easily available and environmentally friendly. According to an environmental analytical device, biochar-derived carbonaceous material has been additionally applied to the synthesis of an effective, sensitive, and low-cost electrochemical sensor. Biochar with an assessment of electrochemical properties has engaged with different redox reactions in water. In this survey, electrochemical ways of behaving of biochar in light of the electrochemical structures were analytically compiled as well as the impact from biomass sources and manufacturing process including carbonization strategies, pre-treatment/changed techniques. This review emphasizes the various synthesis methods of biochar form organic feedstock, properties and different modulations of biochar for the bioremediation of heavy metals. This review study emphasizes the utilization of biochar as sensing platform and supercapacitor for electrode fabrication in electrochemical biosensor to enhance the remediation of toxic contaminants from water streams and by switching the less ecological traditional materials. Brief information on the techniques employed for packaging biochar as carbon electrode is summarized. Scope in the aspect of environmental concern of biochar, future challenges and prospects are proposed in detail.

Differential pulse voltammetry determination of salbutamol using disulfite tungsten/activated carbon modified glassy carbon electrode

In the present article, the disulfide tungsten/activated carbon derived from Eichhornia crassipes (WS₂/AC) was synthesized by the hydrothermal process. The received materials were examined by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray - mapping, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms. The morphology of WS₂/AC was tailored to have a micro/meso/macro structure that facilized large electric conductivity and quick ion diffusion. The WS₂/AC sample was used as an electrode modifier for developing an electrochemical sensor for salbutamol detection. WS₂/AC exhibited excellent oxidation toward salbutamol. Through some optimized conditions, the electrochemical signal of the proposed sensor varied linearly to the salbutamol concentration ranging from 1 to 210 μM with a low LOD (detection limit) of 0.52 μM. The developed sensor showed several merits: easy producing, convenient usage, fabulous selectivity, and good repeatability as well as reproducibility. Finally, the suggested technique can be applied to determine salbutamol in people's biological fluid with satisfactory recoveries of 98.5-104.4% and without statistics different from standard HPLC.

Biosensor for heavy metals detection in wastewater: A review

Pollution due to heavy metals is a global issue in recent years. Initially, there were fewer contaminants, which has increased exponentially owing to rapid industrialization and various anthropogenic activities. Toxicity due to heavy metals causes a lot of health problems and organ system failure in human beings. It also affects other forms of living beings such as plants, animals and even the microbiota. This has been reported by various press reports and research findings. In this review, the production of heavy metals, associated effects on the environment and the technologies employed for detecting these heavy metals are comprehensively discussed. The analytical instruments, including biosensors, have been found to be more beneficial than other techniques. Biosensor exhibits numerous special features, such as reproducibility, reusability, linearity, sensitivity, selectivity, and stability. Over the last three years, biosensors have also had a detection limit of 65.36 ng/mL for heavy metals. The design of biosensors, features and types were also explained in detail. The limit of detection for the heavy metals in wastewater using biosensors was also included with recent references up to the last five years.

Unraveling the hazardous impact of diverse contaminants in the marine environment: Detection and remedial approach through nanomaterials and nano-biosensors

Marine pollution is one of the most underlooked forms of pollution as it affects most aquatic lives and public health in the coastal area. The diverse form of the hazardous pollutant in the marine ecosystem leads the serious genetic level disorders and diseases which include cancer, diabetes, arthritis, reproductive, and neurological diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and several microbial infections. Therefore, a recent alarming study on these pollutants, the microplastics have been voiced out in many countries worldwide, it was even found to be in the human placenta. In recent times, nanomaterials have demonstrated their potential in the detection and remediation of sensitive contaminants. In this review, we presented a comprehensive overview of the source, and distribution of diverse marine pollution on both aquatic and human health by summarizing the concentration of diverse pollutions (heavy metals, pesticides, microbial toxins, and micro/nano plastics) in marine samples such as soil, water, and seafood. Followed by emphasizing its ecotoxicological impact on aquatic animal life and coastal public health. Also discussed are the applicability and advancements of nanomaterials and nano-based biosensors in the detection, prevention, and remediation of diverse pollution in the marine ecosystem.

Recent Trends in Biosensors for Environmental Quality Monitoring

The monitoring of environmental pollution requires fast, reliable, cost-effective and small devices. This need explains the recent trends in the development of biosensing devices for pollutant detection. The present review aims to summarize the newest trends regarding the use of biosensors to detect environmental contaminants. Enzyme, whole cell, antibody, aptamer, and DNA-based biosensors and biomimetic sensors are discussed. We summarize their applicability to the detection of various pollutants and mention their constructive characteristics. Several detection principles are used in biosensor design: amperometry, conductometry, luminescence, etc. They differ in terms of rapidity, sensitivity, profitability, and design. Each one is characterized by specific selectivity and detection limits depending on the sensitive element. Mimetic biosensors are slowly gaining attention from researchers and users due to their advantages compared with classical ones. Further studies are necessary for the development of robust biosensing devices that can successfully be used for the detection of pollutants from complex matrices without prior sample preparation.

Recyclable Target Metal-Enhanced Fluorometric Naked Eye Aptasensor for the Detection of Pb2+ and Ag+ Ions Based on the Structural Change of CaSnO3@PDANS-Constrained GC-Rich ssDNA

Reliable, label-free, and ultraselective detection of Pb2+ and Ag+ ions is of paramount importance for toxicology assessment, human health, and environmental protection. Herein, we present a novel recyclable fluorometric aptasensor based on the Pb2+ and Ag+-induced structural change of the GC-rich ssDNA (guanine cytosine-rich single-strand DNA) and the differences in the fluorescence emission of acridine orange (AO) from random coil to highly stable G-quadruplex for the detection of Pb2+ and Ag+ ions. More interestingly, the construction and principle of the aptasensor explore that the GC-rich ssDNA and AO can be strongly adsorbed on the CaSnO3@PDANS surface through the π-π stacking, hydrogen-bonding, and metal coordination interactions, which exhibit high fluorescence quenching and robust holding of the GC-rich ssDNA. However, in the presence of Pb2+, the specific G-rich ssDNA segment could form a stable G-quadruplex via G4-Pb2+ coordination and capture of AO from the CaSnO3@PDANS surface resulting in fluorescence recovery (70% enhancement). The subsequent addition of Ag+ ion induces coupled cytosine base pairs in another segment of ssDNA to get folded into a duplex structure together with the G-quadruplex, which highly stabilizes the G-quadruplex resulting in the maximum recovery of AO emission (99% enhancement). When the Cys@Fe3O4Nps are added to the above solution, the sensing probe was restored by complexation between the Cys in the Cys@Fe3O4Nps and target metal ions, resulting in the fabrication of a highly sensitive recyclable Pb2+ and Ag+ assay with detection limits of 0.4 and 0.1 nM, respectively. Remarkably, the Cys@Fe3O4Nps can also be reused after washing with EDTA. The utility of the proposed approach has great potential for detecting the Pb2+ and Ag+ ions in environmental samples with interfering contaminants.
