Abstract
Nanomaterials are widely employed in wastewater treatment, among which nanoferrites and their composites hold significant prominence. This study adopts a green approach to synthesize zinc ferrite nanoparticles, subsequently integrating them with polyaniline (PANI) to fabricate the ZnFe2O4-PANI nanocomposite. Characterization of the prepared ZnFe2O4-PANI nanocomposite was conducted using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) techniques. Using Scherrer's equation, the crystallite size of the synthesized zinc ferrite nanoparticles was found to be 17.67 nm. SEM micrographs of the ZnFe2O4-PANI nanocomposite revealed that in situ polymerization of ZnFe2O4 with polyaniline transforms the amorphous surface morphology of the polymer into a homogeneous nanoparticle structure. The adsorption of crystal violet (CV) dye onto the surface of the ZnFe2O4-PANI nanocomposite depends on pH, adsorbent dosage, temperature, concentration levels and duration. The Langmuir adsorption model fitted the data well, indicating adherence to a pseudo-second-order kinetic pattern. Thermodynamic values ΔG°, ΔH° and ΔS° indicated that the adsorption process occurred spontaneously. Advantages and disadvantages of the technique have also been highlighted. Mechanism of adsorption is discussed. From the obtained results, it is evident that the ZnFe2O4-PANI nanocomposite holds promise as a sorbent for the removal of dye from wastewater.

Abstract
In this work, the Mn, Co, Ce co-doped corn cob biochar (MCCBC) as catalytic particle electrodes in a three-dimensional heterogeneous electro-Fenton-like (3D-HEFL) system for the efficient degradation of coking wastewater was investigated. Various characterization methods such as SEM, EDS, XRD, XPS and electrochemical analysis were employed for the prepared materials. The results showed that the MCCBC particle electrodes had excellent electrochemical degradation performances of COD in coking wastewater, and the COD removal and degradation rates of the 3D/HEFL system were 85.35% and 0.0563 min-1 respectively. RSM optimized conditions revealed higher COD removal rate at 89.23% after 31.6 min of electrolysis. The efficient degradability and wide adaptability of the 3D/HEFL system were due to its beneficial coupling mechanism, including the synergistic effect between the system factors (3D and HEFL) as well as the synergistic interactions between the ROS (dominated by •OH and supplemented by O2•-) in the system. Moreover, the COD removal rate of MCCBC could still remain at 81.41% after 5 cycles with a lower ion leaching and a specific energy consumption of 11.28 kWh kg-1 COD. The superior performance of MCCBC, as catalytic particle electrodes showed a great potential for engineering applications for the advanced treatment of coking wastewater.

Abstract
Modern society pays further and further attention to environmental protection and the promotion of sustainable energy solutions. Heterogeneous photocatalysis is widely recognized as one of the most economically viable and ecologically sound technologies to combat environmental pollution and the global energy crisis. One challenge is finding a suitable photocatalytic material for an efficient process. Inorganic nanotubes have garnered attention as potential candidates due to their optoelectronic properties, which differ from their bulk equivalents. Among them, clay nanotubes (halloysite, imogolite, and chrysotile) are attracting renewed interest for photocatalysis applications thanks to their low production costs, their unique physical and chemical properties, and the possibility to functionalize or dope their structure to enhance charge-carriers separation into their structure. In this review, we provide new insights into the potential of these inorganic nanotubes in photocatalysis. We first discuss the structural and morphological features of clay nanotubes. Applications of photocatalysts based on clay nanotubes across a range of photocatalytic reactions, including the decomposition of organic pollutants, elimination of NOx, production of hydrogen, and disinfection of bacteria, are discussed. Finally, we highlight the obstacles and outline potential avenues for advancing the current photocatalytic system based on clay nanotubes. Our aim is that this review can offer researchers new opportunities to advance further research in the field of clay nanotubes-based photocatalysis with other vital applications in the future.

Reshaping environmental sustainability: Poultry by-products digestate valorization for enhanced biochar performance in methylene blue removal. JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT 2024; 351:119870. [PMID: 38141348 DOI: 10.1016/j.jenvman.2023.119870] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/08/2023] [Revised: 12/08/2023] [Accepted: 12/13/2023] [Indexed: 12/25/2023]
Abstract
Anaerobic digestion is a highly effective and innovative method for treating organic waste while simultaneously generating energy. However, the treatment of the resulting digestate remains a challenging endeavor. To address this issue, poultry by-products digestate is used in this study to prepare biochars at two different pyrolysis temperatures (500/600 °C). Despite their potential, the utilization of untreated biochar is restricted due to its inadequate adsorption capacity. Therefore, each biochar was chemically activated using either HNO3 or KOH to synthesize four activated biochars (BC5@KOH, BC6@HNO3, BC5@HNO3, and BC6@HNO3). The aim is to investigate how the nature of chemical activation and pyrolysis temperature influence the adsorption of methylene blue dye. Characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman analysis, and pHpzc determination, were exploited to comprehensively elucidate the structure and composition of both unprocessed and chemically activated biochars. Among the activated biochars, the adsorbent BC5@HNO3 exhibits the highest methylene blue (MB) adsorption capacity, reaching 101.72 mg.g-1 at 298 K under (pH = 2, ads dose = 0.6 g.L-1, shaking time of 20 min, as optimal conditions for MB adsorption. Adsorption data for each adsorbent strongly aligns with both the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Moreover, the thermodynamic study reveals that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. The adsorption mechanism of MB dye was explored using various analytical techniques, including FTIR, SEM, PZC, and pH impact assessment. The findings suggest correlations with electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, pore filling, as well as n-π and π-π interactions. Apparently, activated biochars play a crucial role in efficiently removing methylene blue dye, showcasing their potential as environmentally friendly and effective adsorbents.

Abstract
Polyaniline is widely used in the field of electrochemistry due to its excellent electrical conductivity. However, its effectiveness and mechanism of enhancing adsorption property are unclear. Herein, chitosan/polyaniline nanofibrous composite membranes with average diameter ranging from 200 to 300 nm were fabricated by electrospinning technology. The as-prepared nanofibrous membranes exhibited significantly improved adsorption capacity of 814.9 mg/g and 618.0 mg/g towards acid blue 113 and reactive orange dyes, which were 121.8 % and 99.4 % higher than that of pure chitosan membrane. The doped polyaniline promoted the dye transfer rate and capacity due to the enhanced conductivity of the composite membrane. Kinetic data showed that chemisorption was the rate-limiting step, and thermodynamic data indicated the adsorption of the two anionic dyes was spontaneous monolayer adsorption. This study provides a feasible strategy to introduce conductive polymer into adsorbent to construct high performance adsorbents for wastewater treatment.

Abstract
In this study, quartz sand (QS) incorporated into a crosslinked chitosan-glutaraldehyde matrix (QS@Ch-Glu) was prepared and employed as an efficient adsorbent for the elimination of Orange G (OG) dye from water. The sorption process is adequately described by the pseudo-second order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model with maximum adsorption capacities of 172.65, 188.18, and 206.65mg/g at 25, 35, and 45 °C, respectively. A statistical physics model was adopted to elucidate the adsorption mechanism of OG on QS@Ch-Glu. Calculated thermodynamic factors revealed that the adsorption of OG is endothermic, spontaneous, and occurs via physical interactions. Overall, the proposed adsorption mechanism was based on electrostatic attractions, n-π stacking interaction, hydrogen bonding interaction, and Yoshida hydrogen bonding. The adsorption rate of QS@Ch-Glu was still above 95 % even after 6 cycles of adsorption and desorption. Furthermore, QS@Ch-Glu demonstrated high efficiency in real water samples. All these findings demonstrate that QS@Ch-Glu is qualified for practical applications.

Abstract
Magnetic responsive hydrogels (CMX-cl-P4VP/M-NPs) were successfully synthesized through in situ co-precipitation procedure and investigated using various techniques. The surface morphology analysis revealed that the M-NPs were uniformly distributed within the hydrogel matrix and had average sizes ranging from 4.98 to 15.02 nm. The graft copolymer containing nanoparticles exhibited a sensitive magnetic response, and their recovery could be facilitated by applying a magnetic field. The purpose of this research is to study the ability of the prepared magnetic hydrogel to remove AO-10 dye and hexavalent chromium ions (Cr(VI)) from the aqueous solution under various factors, namely contact time, pH, amount of adsorbent, coexisting ions and AO-10 and Cr(VI) concentrations. The outcomes of the batch adsorption demonstrated that the adsorbent hydrogel incorporated with a low percentage (10 %) of M-NPs had a strong affinity for the removal of AO-10 dye and Cr(VI) ions at an optimum pH = 3, and the removal percentage reached 99.3 and 97.4 % for 500 mg L-1 and 300 mg L-1 of AO-10 dye and Cr(VI) ions within 90, 50 min, respectively. The data were well-fitted by pseudo-first-order kinetics. The maximum adsorption capacities of AO-10 dye and Cr(VI) ions onto adsorbent were 2448 and 574.7 mg g-1 at 298 K, calculated from the Langmuir model.

Abstract
In this paper, an advanced statistical physics adsorption model (double-layer model with two energies) is successfully established. On the basis of this model, statistical thermodynamic functions (e.g., entropy (S), Gibbs free enthalpy (G), and internal energy (Eint)), pore size distribution (PSD), and site energy distribution (SED) functions were successfully developed and applied to investigate the adsorption mechanisms of nanopore-structured ashitaba waste-based activated carbons (AWAC) and walnut shell-based activated carbons (WSAC) on Congo red (CR) and methylene blue (MB) dyes in aqueous solutions. Statistical thermodynamic results indicated that the adsorption reactions involved in this study are entropy-increasing, endothermic, and spontaneous in nature. Furthermore, PSD and SED described the heterogeneity of these adsorbents in terms of geometry or structure and energy and illustrated that the aforementioned adsorption processes are endothermic physisorption. All in all, this study contributed to broadening the understanding of the adsorption mechanisms of dye molecules onto biomass-based activated carbons.

Abstract
Metal sulfides are a type of reduction semiconductor photocatalysts with narrow bandgap and negative conduction band potential, which make them have unique photocatalytic performance in solar-to-fuel conversion and environmental purification. However, metal sulfides also suffer from low quantum efficiency and photocorrosion. In this review, the strategies to improve the photocatalytic activity of metal sulfide photocatalysts by stimulating the charge separation and improving light-harvesting ability are introduced, including morphology control, semiconductor coupling and surface modification. In addition, the recent research progress aiming at improving their photostability is also illustrated, such as, construction of hole transfer heterojunctions and deposition of hole transfer cocatalysts. Based on the electronic band structures, the applications of metal sulfides in photocatalysis, namely, hydrogen production, degradation of organic pollutants and reduction of CO2, are summarized. Finally, the perspectives of the promising future of metal-sulfide based photocatalysts and the challenges remaining to overcome are also presented.

Abstract
This work aims to investigate the adsorption performance of orange G (OG) dye from aqueous solutions employing PANI@sawdust biocomposite enrobed by calcium-alginate bio-beads (Alg-PANI@SD). The as-prepared adsorbent was characterized by scanning-electron-microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier transforms infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and used to remove orange G dye from aqueous water. Batch tests were performed as a function of adsorbent dosage, pH, contact time, interfering ions, and initial OG dye concentration. Experimental results show that the kinetic model of pseudo-first-order (PFO) and Freundlich isotherm perfectly fit the entire experimental data. Additionally, the prepared composite exhibited an excellent regeneration capacity and reusability for OG dye removal. The results revealed that the as-prepared Alg-PANI@SD bio-beads have the potential to be applied as a low-cost adsorbent for the adsorption of OG dye from aqueous media.

Abstract
Over more than three decades, the scientific community has been contentiously interested in structuring varying photocatalytic materials with unique properties for appropriate technology transfer. Most of the existing reported photocatalysts in the literature show pros and cons by considering the type of application and working conditions. Bismuth titanate oxides (BTO) are novel photocatalysts that raised recently towards energy and environmental-related applications. Most recent advances to developing bismuth titanate-based photocatalysts for the oxidation of organic pollutants in the water phase were reviewed in this report. To counter the potential drawbacks of BTO materials, i.e., rapid recombination of photoproduced charges, and further promote the photoactivity, most reported approaches were discussed, including creating direct Z-scheme junctions, conventional heterojunctions, metal/non-metal doping, coupling with carbon materials, surface modification and construction of oxygen vacancies. In the end, the review addresses the future trends for better engineering and application of BTO based photocatalysts towards the photodegradation of organic pollutants in water under controlled lab and large scales conditions.

Doping of TiO2 Using Metal Waste (Door Key) to Improve Its Photocatalytic Efficiency in the Mineralization of an Emerging Contaminant in an Aqueous Environment. WATER 2022. Abstract
Photocatalysis is an effective advanced oxidation process to mineralize recalcitrant contaminants in aqueous media. TiO2 is the most used photocatalyst in this type of process. To improve the deficiencies of this material, one of the most used strategies has been to dope TiO2 with metallic ions. Chemical reagents are often used as dopant precursors. However, due to the depletion of natural resources, in this work it was proposed to substitute chemical reagents and instead use a metallic residue (door key) as a doping precursor. The materials were synthesized using the sol–gel method and calcined at 400 °C to obtain the crystal structure of anatase. The characterization of the materials was carried out using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), scanning electron microscopy–energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) methods X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The results obtained indicate that Cu+/Cu2+ and Zn2+ ions coexist in the support, which modifies the physicochemical properties of TiO2 and improves its photocatalytic efficiency. The synergistic effect of the dopants in TiO2 allowed the mineralization of diclofenac in an aqueous medium when T-DK (1.0) was used as photocatalyst and simulated solar radiation as an activation source.
