A review on removal strategies of microorganisms from water environment using nanomaterials and their behavioural characteristics

Synergistic Effects of Polydopamine/Medical Stone Bio-Adsorbents for Enhanced Interfacial Adsorption and Dynamic Filtration of Bacteria

Polymer-based wastewater disinfection, which is typically performed using chemical oxidation or irradiation, can result in various toxic byproducts and corrosion under harsh environments. This study introduces a robust bio-adsorbent prepared from naturally abundant polydopamine-modified medical stone (MS@PDA) for the high-efficiency removal of bacteria from water. The PDA nanocoating can be easily applied through an in situ self-polymerization process, resulting in a considerably high bacterial adsorption capacity of 6.6 k pcs mm-2 for Staphylococcus aureus. A cyclic flow-through dynamic filtration and a disinfection system was implemented using an MS@PDA porous filter with an average pore size of 21.8 ± 1.4 µm and porosity of ~83%, achieving a 5.2-6.0-fold enhancement in the cumulative removal efficiency for MS@PDA2. The underlying mechanisms were elucidated through the synergistic effects of interfacial bio-adsorption and size-dependent interception. Notably, the bacteria captured on the surface could be killed using the enhanced photothermal effects of the PDA nanocoating and the inherent antimicrobial properties of the mineral stone. Thus, this study not only provides a new type of advanced bio-adsorbent but also provides new perspectives on an efficient and cost-effective approach for sustainable wastewater treatment.

Potable water production through a low-cost single chamber solar still in north India

The main aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of a single slope solar still and to assess the effect of nanofluid on its performance. A single basin single slope solar still was designed and fabricated at the Department of Chemical Engineering, IET Lucknow. Its performance was assessed in terms of the yield of potable water. The effect of various climatic parameters was also studied. Al2O3 nanofluid was used to enhance the yield of the solar still. In the presence of nanofluid, the total yield of the solar still improved by 16.6%. Its economic feasibility was analyzed and reported. The portability of the small size of solar stills, its better economics, easy fabrication, and good performance make them very useful for industrial as well as household purposes.

Floating photocatalysts as promising materials for environmental detoxification and energy production: A review

The oxygenation process of the catalyst surface, the incident-light harvesting capability, and facile recycling of utilized photocatalysts play key role in the outstanding photocatalytic performances. The typical existing photocatalysts in powder form have many drawbacks, such as difficult separation from the treated water, insufficient surface oxygenation, poor active surface area, low incident-light harvesting ability, and secondary pollution of the environment. A great number of scientific works introduced novel and fresh ideas related to designing floating photocatalytic systems by immobilizing highly active photocatalysts onto a floatable substrate. Thanks to direct contact with the illuminated light and oxygen molecules in the interface of water/air, the photocatalytic performance is maximized through production of more reactive species, employed in the photocatalytic reactions. Furthermore, facile recovering of the utilized photocatalysts for next processes avoids secondary pollution as well as diminishes the process's price. This review highlights the performance of developed floating photocatalysts for diverse applications. Furthermore, different floating substrates and possible mechanisms in floating photocatalysts are briefly mentioned. In addition, several emerging self-floating photocatalytic systems are taken attention and discussed. Specially, coupling photo-thermal and photocatalytic effects seems to be a good strategy for introducing a new class of floating photocatalyst to utilize the free, abundant, and green sunlight energy for the aims of water desalination and purification. Despite of a large number of attempts about the floating photocatalysts, there are still plenty of rooms for more in-depth research to be carried out for attaining the required characteristics of the large scale utilizations of these materials.

Perspectives of nanomaterials in microbial remediation of heavy metals and their environmental consequences: A review

Nanomaterials (NMs) have diverse applications in various sectors, such as decontaminating heavy metals from drinking water, wastewater, and soil. Their degradation efficiency can be enhanced through the application of microbes. As microbial strain releases enzymes, which leads to the degradation of HMs. Therefore, nanotechnology and microbial-assisted remediation-based methods help us develop a remediation process with practical utility, speed, and less environmental toxicity. This review focuses on the success achieved for the bioremediation of heavy metals by nanoparticles and microbial strains and in their integrated approach. Still, the use of NMs and heavy metals (HMs) can negatively affect the health of living organisms. This review describes various aspects of the bioremediation of heavy materials using microbial nanotechnology. Their safe and specific use supported by bio-based technology paves the way for their better remediation. We discuss the utility of nanomaterials for removing heavy metals from wastewater, toxicity studies and issues to the environment with their practical implications. Nanomaterial assisted heavy metal degradation coupled with microbial technology and disposal issues are described along with detection methods. Environmental impact of nanomaterials is also discussed based on the recent work conducted by the researchers. Therefore, this review opens new avenues for future research with an impact on the environment and toxicity issues. Also, applying new biotechnological tools will help us develop better heavy metal degradation routes.

The role of nanotherapy in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma by targeting tumor microenvironment

Head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs) refers to a group of highly malignant and pathogenically complex tumors. Traditional treatment methods include surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. However, with advancements in genetics, molecular medicine, and nanotherapy, more effective and safer treatments have been developed. Nanotherapy, in particular, has the potential to be an alternative therapeutic option for HNSCC patients, given its advantageous targeting capabilities, low toxicity and modifiability. Recent research has highlighted the important role of the tumor microenvironment (TME) in the development of HNSCC. The TME is composed of various cellular components, such as fibroblasts, vascular endothelial cells, and immune cells, as well as non-cellular agents such as cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, extracellular matrix (ECM), and extracellular vesicles (EVs). These components greatly influence the prognosis and therapeutic efficacy of HNSCC, making the TME a potential target for treatment using nanotherapy. By regulating angiogenesis, immune response, tumor metastasis and other factors, nanotherapy can potentially alleviate HNSCC symptoms. This review aims to summarize and discuss the application of nanotherapy that targets HNSCC's TME. We highlight the therapeutic value of nanotherapy for HNSCC patients.

Polymeric membranes functionalized with nanomaterials (MP@NMs): A review of advances in pesticide removal

The excessive contamination of drinking water sources by pesticides has a pernicious impact on human health and the environment since only 0.1% of pesticides is utilized effectively to control the and the rest is deposited in the environment. Filtration by polymeric membranes has become a promising technique to deal with this problem; however, the scientific community, in the need to find better pesticide retention results, has begun to meddle in the functionalization of polymeric membranes. Given the great variety of membrane, polymer, and nanomaterial synthesis methods present in the market, the possibilities of obtaining membranes that adjust to different variables and characteristics related to a certain pesticide are relatively extensive, so it is expected that this technology will represent one of the main pesticide removal strategies in the future. In this direction, this review focused on, - the main characteristics of the nanomaterials and their impact on pristine polymeric membranes; - the removal performance of functionalized membranes; and - the main mechanisms by which membranes can retain pesticides. Based on these insights, the functionalized polymeric membranes can be considered as a promising technology in the removal of pesticides since the removal performance of this technology against pesticide showed a significant increase. Obtaining membranes that adjust to different variables and characteristics related to a certain pesticide are relatively extensive, so it is expected that functionalized membrane technology will represent one of the main pesticide removal strategies in the future.

Recent advances in electrochemical sensor developments for detecting emerging pollutant in water environment

In the latest times, considerable studies have been performed closer to detecting emerging pollutant such as paracetamol in wastewater. Electrochemical sensor developments have recently started to determine in fewer concentrations effectively. The detection of paracetamol using standard protocols corresponding to electroanalytical techniques has a greater impact noticed in directing the detecting process toward biosensors. Non-enzymatic sensors are the peak of all electro analysis approaches. Functionalized materials, such as metal oxide nanoparticles, conducting polymers, and carbon-based materials for electrode surface functionalization have been used to create a fortification for distributing passive enzyme-free biosensors. Synergic effects are possible by enhancing loading capacity and mass transfer of reactants for attaining high analytical sensitivity using a variety of nanomaterials with large surface areas. The main focus of this study is to address the prevailing issues in the identification of paracetamol with the tasks in the non-enzymatic sensors field, followed by the useful methods of electro analysis studies.

Environmental health and risk assessment metrics with special mention to biotransfer, bioaccumulation and biomagnification of environmental pollutants

The environment pollutants, which are landed up in environment because of human activities like urbanization, mining and industrializations, affects human health, plants and animals. The living organisms present in environment are constantly affected by the toxic pollutants through direct contact or bioaccumulation of chemicals from the environment. The toxic and hazardous pollutants are easily transferred to different environmental matrices like land, air and water bodies such as surface and ground waters. This comprehensive review deeply discusses the routes and causes of different environmental pollutants along with their toxicity, impact, occurrences and fate in the environment. Environment health and risk assessment tools that are used to evaluate the harmfulness, exposure of living organisms to pollutants and the amount of pollutant accumulated are explained with help of bio-kinetic models. Biotransfer, toxicity factor, biomagnification and bioaccumulation of different pollutants in the air, water and marine ecosystems are critically addressed. Thus, the presented survey would be collection of correlations those addresses the factors involved in assessing the environmental health and risk impacts of distinct environmental pollutants.
