Effects and bioaccumulation of Cr(III), Cr(VI) and their mixture in the freshwater mussel Corbicula fluminea

Study on the Mechanism and Potential of Corbicula fluminea (Asian Clam) in Removing Copper and Cadmium from Aquaculture Ponds

The issue of heavy metal pollution in aquaculture ponds is becoming increasingly severe, posing a significant threat to the healthy development of the aquaculture industry. Heavy metals such as cadmium and copper accumulate in ponds, not only exerting toxic effects on aquatic organisms and affecting their growth and reproduction but also endangering human health through the food chain. Bioremediation, as a green and environmentally friendly technology, utilizes specific organisms to absorb, transform, and immobilize heavy metals. We examined metal accumulation, traditional metal-related biomarkers, alongside transcriptomic and tissue histological analyses, in the hepatopancreas of Corbicula fluminea following a 14-day exposure to copper (20 µg/L), cadmium (20 µg/L), or combined copper-cadmium treatments (20 µg/L Cu and 20 µg/L Cd). Metal exposure led to notable metal accumulation in the clam's hepatopancreas. Analysis of traditional biomarkers revealed signs of cellular injury and oxidative stress in clams post-metal exposure. Transcriptomic analysis across the three treatment groups revealed disruptions in immune response, response to metal ion, and energy metabolism, characterized by differential expression levels of key genes such as ABCA3, MYD88, TOLLIP, TBK1, C2, C4, c-Myc, SYK, and SAMHD1. These findings deepen our understanding of the adverse effects of metal exposure on freshwater organisms and evaluate the potential of Corbicula fluminea for removing heavy metals from aquaculture ponds.

Distribution of Inorganic Contaminants Along the Coast of Ciudad de la Costa, Uruguay

The aim of this work was to study the distribution of relevant inorganic contaminants in environmental samples from Ciudad de la Costa, the second most populated city of Uruguay. For this task aluminum (Al), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni) and lead (Pb) levels were determined in sand, water, and plant material from six beaches that are located in the area. Analytical methods were successfully validated. Accuracy was ensured by using certified reference materials and spiking procedures. Average metal concentrations in sand and water samples were compared with the maximum limits established by international or national regulations (when available), being far below these limits in all cases. This may indicate that the inorganic contamination in the studied area is rather low, despite the rapid increase in anthropic activities in recent years. To give a deeper characterization of the ecosystem, metal accumulation and mobility within a common plant of the zone, Ammophila arenaria, were studied. Results showed that concentrations in roots were one order of magnitude higher in comparison to aerial parts. In addition, the bioaccumulation coefficient (BAC) showed that the plant accumulates Cd, Cr and Ni, while a low accumulation for Pb was observed. Finally, a Cr(VI) speciation analysis in Ammophila arenaria was performed, showing Cr(VI) percentages below 4.6%, which is relevant from the (eco)toxicological point of view due to the high environmental mobility and bioavailability of this valence state. This work constitutes the first environmental surveillance report of this kind, regarding this populated area of the country.

One-step preparation of Fe/N co-doped porous biochar for chromium(VI) and bisphenol a decontamination in water: Insights to co-activation and adsorption mechanisms

Herein, magnetic nitrogen doped porous biochar (Fe/N-PBC) was prepared by mixing KHCO₃, K₂FeO₄ and CO(NH₂)₂ through one-step pyrolysis, and was employed for adsorbing Cr(VI) and BPA in water. The whole co-activated process was accompanied with pore-forming, carbon thermal reduction and element doping. Specifically, the developed microporous structures and high surface area of Fe/N-PBC (1093.68 m²/g) were achieved under synergistic activation of KHCO₃ and K₂FeO₄. Meanwhile, carbon thermal reduction process successfully converted K₂FeO₄ to Fe⁰ with introduction of heterocyclic-N (pyrrolic N and pyridinic N) structures by CO(NH₂)₂ doping. Fe/N-PBC exhibited outstanding uptake for Cr(VI) (340.96 mg/g) and BPA (355.14 mg/g), and possessed favorable regeneration properties after three cycles. Notably, the high-performance Cr(VI) removal was associated to reduction, electrostatic interaction, complexation, pore filling and ion exchange, while pore filling, hydrogen-bonding interaction and π-π stacking were responsible for BPA binding. This work presents reasonable design of Fe/N-carbon materials for Cr(VI)/BPA polluted water remediation.
