Combined sorption-biodegradation for removal of energetic compounds from stormwater runoff

Munition constituents (MC) in stormwater runoff have the potential to move these pollutants into receiving bodies at military installations. Here we present further evaluation of a passive and sustainable biofilter technology for removal of dissolved MC from simulated surface runoff by combined sorption-biodegradation processes under dynamic flow conditions. Columns were packed with MC sorbents Sphagnum peat moss and cationized (CAT) pine shavings with and without wood-based biochar. Some columns also received biodegradable polymers as a slow-release carbon source and MC degrading bacterial cultures. MC removal was greater under combined sorption-biodegradation conditions than under sorption only conditions, ranging from 2.5-fold for 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) to > 25-fold for hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-s-triazine (RDX). Biochar improved removal for some MC, which was attributed to it acting as a buffer by its ability to sorb/degrade these compounds, thus delaying their elution from the columns until the biodegradation activity increased. It was also found that labile carbon source availability, rather than microbial culture viability, was responsible for the apparent reduction in energetic removal over time. These results provide a foundation for further development of technologies for remediation of energetic compounds in military range stormwater runoff.

Effect of gypsum on transport of IMX-104 constituents in overland flow under simulated rainfall

Residue of energetic formulations, which is deposited on military training grounds following incomplete detonation, poses biotic hazards. This residue can be transported off-site, adsorb to soil clays and organic matter, transform or degrade, or taken up by plants and animals. Its harmful effects can be mitigated by localizing the energetics at the site of initial deposition using soil amendments and allowing them to bio- and photodegrade in situ. Small plots with coarse loamy soil were used to study the effect of gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) on transport and redistribution under simulated rainfall of various sizes of insensitive munition explosive (IMX)-104 particles, which consist of 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO), 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN), hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX), and octahydro-1,3,5,7-tertranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX). The addition of gypsum more than doubled infiltration and decreased sediment loss by 16% compared to the control. The post-rainfall mass balance of IMX-104 in the order from greater to smaller pools was as follows: (1) soil surface retention, (2) off-site loss to overland flow, and (3) sub-surface infiltration. Overall, the application of gypsum significantly decreased concentration and the total mass loss of dissolved DNAN, RDX, and HMX in surface runoff. In addition, gypsum significantly decreased (for NTO, DNAN, and HMX) or delayed (for NTO, DNAN, RDX, and HMX) the peak discharge of <2 mm particulate energetics. The infiltration of NTO in the gypsum treatment was fivefold greater than in the control. Moreover, DNAN and RDX were also present in infiltration, while in the gypsum-free control none were found. Gypsum shifted the total mass balance of energetics toward subsurface flow. This study indicates that gypsum may decrease off-site transport of energetic constituents in the soils that are subject to surface sealing.

Movement of TNT and RDX from composition B detonation residues in solution and sediment during runoff

Energetics used in military exercises can potentially contaminate ground and surface waters. This study was conducted to evaluate the movement of Composition B, a formulation that includes TNT (2,4,6-trinitrotoluene), RDX (hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine), and HMX (octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine), in runoff. Mechanisms of transport we examined include movement of energetics dissolved in runoff, as particles and adsorbed to suspended sediment, and in infiltration. Rainfall simulations were conducted under controlled conditions with two rainfall rates (approximately 30 and 50 mm h-1), two soils with different infiltration capacities, and four energetic particle sizes (4.75-9.51 mm, 2.83-4.75 mm, 2-2.83 mm, and <2 mm). Particles remaining on the soil surface after rainfall were measured as well as energetics dissolved in runoff, in suspended sediment, and in infiltration. Greater concentrations of TNT than RDX and HMX were found dissolved in runoff due to its higher solubility and dissolution rates. We also found that particle transport in runoff increased with decrease in particle size. Smaller particle sizes also led to greater transport dissolved in solution. Relationships were found relating runoff and sediment yield to the transport of RDX and TNT. The results of this study allow improved prediction of Composition B transport in runoff and therefore its contamination potential.
