Insights into the heavy metal adsorption and immobilization mechanisms of CaFe-layered double hydroxide corn straw biochar: Synthesis and application in a combined heavy metal-contaminated environment

Progress on layered double hydroxides as green materials in sustainable agricultural production

As the global population continues to grow, there is increasing demand for high-quality and high-yield food. However, traditional agrochemicals such as fertilizers and pesticides suffer from low utilization rates and can be hazardous to non-target organisms and the soil environment. Two-dimensional layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have attracted considerable attention in the agricultural sector owing to their excellent properties. To alleviate the general concern about the use of LDH materials in combination with agrochemicals, this paper presents a comprehensive overview of the structure, properties, preparation methods, and cytotoxicity of LDHs, with a focus on the advantages and disadvantages of different synthesis methods. In addition, the current research status of the application of LDHs as green materials in modern agricultural production is presented, and the applications of nano fertilizers for promoting crop growth, nano pesticides for efficient herbicide and insecticide, efficient adsorption of pollutants and soil heavy metal ions to maintain soil stability, and applications in genetic modification and enhancement of plant photosynthesis are discussed in detail. Finally, future research directions for LDH are envisioned. We hope that this study will promote the use of LDH materials in agricultural practices.

Adsorption of heavy metals by biochar in aqueous solution: A review

Heavy metal pollution (e.g., Cd, Hg, Pb, Cu, Ni, Zn, As and Cr) has become a crucial issue worldwide. Among various remediation strategies, adsorption is widely recognized for its environmental sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and operational simplicity. In this context, biochar has gained significant attention due to its promising adsorption performance. To systematically support adsorption studies, this review compiled essential models for adsorption experiments, including commonly used adsorption kinetics models, isotherm models, and thermodynamic analysis methods. Moreover, we systematically analyzed key factors affecting heavy metal adsorption by biochar, such as its physicochemical properties, environmental pH, temperature, initial concentration, dosage, and the presence of coexisting ions, to identify the conditions that govern adsorption capacity. In addition, the adsorption performance of biochar toward eight significant heavy metals is reviewed in detail, with a focus on elucidating the underlying mechanisms, including complexation, ion exchange, cation-π bonding, electrostatic interactions, and precipitation. Finally, based on identified research gaps and critical challenges, we discuss emerging research tools, including machine learning and advanced surface modifications, to guide the targeted design of biochar materials for enhanced adsorption capacity.

Recycling Fe and improving organic pollutant removal via in situ forming magnetic core-shell Fe3O4@CaFe-LDH in Fe(II)-catalyzed oxidative wastewater treatment

Due to its high efficiency, Fe(II)-based catalytic oxidation has been one of the most popular types of technology for treating growing organic pollutants. A lot of chemical Fe sludge along with various refractory pollutants was concomitantly produced, which may cause secondary environmental problems without proper disposal. We here innovatively proposed an effective method of achieving zero Fe sludge, reusing Fe resources (Fe recovery = 100%) and advancing organics removal (final TOC removal > 70%) simultaneously, based on the in situ formation of magnetic Ca-Fe layered double hydroxide (Fe3O4@CaFe-LDH) nano-material. Cations (Ca2+ and Fe3+) concentration (≥ 30 mmol/L) and their molar ratio (Ca:Fe ≥ 1.75) were crucial to the success of the method. Extrinsic nano Fe3O4 was designed to be involved in the Fe(II)-catalytic wastewater treatment process, and was modified by oxidation intermediates/products (especially those with COO- structure), which promoted the co-precipitation of Ca2+ (originated from Ca(OH)2 added after oxidation process) and by-produced Fe3+ cations on its surface to in situ generate core-shell Fe3O4@CaFe-LDH. The oxidation products were further removed during Fe3O4@CaFe-LDH material formation via intercalation and adsorption. This method was applicable to many kinds of organic wastewater, such as bisphenol A, methyl orange, humics, and biogas slurry. The prepared magnetic and hierarchical CaFe-LDH nanocomposite material showed comparable application performance to the recently reported CaFe-LDHs. This work provides a new strategy for efficiently enhancing the efficiency and economy of Fe(II)-catalyzed oxidative wastewater treatment by producing high value-added LDHs materials.

Adsorptive removal of toxic heavy metals from wastewater using water hyacinth and its biochar: A review

Heavy metal contamination in aquatic ecosystems worsens due to rapid industrial expansion. Biochar, an efficient and economical adsorbent, has attracted much interest in environmental science, particularly in removing heavy metals (HMs). The paper covers basic details on biochar, its preparation, and potential chemical and inorganic modifications. Possible adsorption mechanisms of HMs on biochar, which include electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, surface complexation, chemical precipitation, and hydrogen bonding, are also discussed. These mechanisms are affected by the type of biochar used and the species of HMs present. Research findings suggest that while biochar effectively removes HMs, modifications to the carbon-rich hybrid can enhance surface properties such as surface area, pore size, functional groups, etc., and magnetic properties in a few cases, making them more efficient in HM removal. The choice of feedstock materials is one of the key parameters influencing the sorption capacity of biochars. This review aims to investigate the use of various forms of water hyacinth (WH), including aquatic plants, biomass, biochar, and modified biochar, as effective adsorbents for removing HMs from aqueous solutions and industrial effluents through a comparative analysis of their adsorption processes. However, further studies on the diverse effects of functional groups of modified biochar on HMs adsorption are necessary for future research.

One-Pot Preparation of Layered Double Hydroxide-Engineered Boric Acid Root and Application in Wastewater

Heavy metals and organic pollutants are prevalent in water bodies, causing great damage to the environment and human beings. Hence, it is urgent to develop a kind of adsorbent with good performance. Anion interlacing layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are a promising adsorbent for the sustainable removal of heavy metal ions and dyes from wastewater. Using aluminum chloride, zinc chloride and ammonium pentaborate tetrahydrate (NH4B5O8 · 4H2O, BA) as raw materials, the LDHs complex (BA-LDHs) of B5O8- intercalation was prepared by one-step hydrothermal method. The BA-LDHs samples were characterized by a X-ray powder diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR) and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. The results showed that B5O8- was successfully intercalated. Adsorption experimental results suggested that BA-LDHs possess a maximum adsorption capacity of 18.7, 57.5, 70.2, and 3.12 mg·g-1 for Cd(II), Cu(II), Cr(VI) and Methylene blue (MB) at Cs = 2 g·L-1, respectively. The adsorption experiment conforms to the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models, and the kinetic adsorption data are well fitted by the pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetic equation. The as-prepared BA-LDHs have potential application prospects in the removal of heavy metals and dyes in wastewater. More importantly, they also provide a strategy for preparing selective adsorbents.

Physicochemical properties and performance of non-woody derived biochars for the sustainable removal of aquatic pollutants: A systematic review

Biochar is a carbon-rich material produced from the partial combustion of different biomass residues. It can be used as a promising material for adsorbing pollutants from soil and water and promoting environmental sustainability. Extensive research has been conducted on biochars prepared from different feedstocks used for pollutant removal. However, a comprehensive review of biochar derived from non-woody feedstocks (NWF) and its physiochemical attributes, adsorption capacities, and performance in removing heavy metals, antibiotics, and organic pollutants from water systems needs to be included. This review revealed that the biochars derived from NWF and their adsorption efficiency varied greatly according to pyrolysis temperatures. However, biochars (NWF) pyrolyzed at higher temperatures (400-800 °C) manifested excellent physiochemical and structural attributes as well as significant removal effectiveness against antibiotics, heavy metals, and organic compounds from contaminated water. This review further highlighted why biochars prepared from NWF are most valuable/beneficial for water treatment. What preparatory conditions (pyrolysis temperature, residence time, heating rate, and gas flow rate) are necessary to design a desirable biochar containing superior physiochemical and structural properties, and adsorption efficiency for aquatic pollutants? The findings of this review will provide new research directions in the field of water decontamination through the application of NWF-derived adsorbents.

CaAl-Layered Double Hydroxides-Modified Biochar Composites Mitigate the Toxic Effects of Cu and Pb in Soil on Pea Seedlings

Compound contamination of soil with heavy metals copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) triggered by mining development has become a serious problem. To solve this problem, in this paper, corncob kernel, which is widely available and inexpensive, was used as the raw material of biochar and modified by loading CaAl-layered double hydroxides to synthesize biochar-loaded CaAl-layered double hydroxide composites (CaAl-LDH/BC). After soil remediation experiments, either BC or CaAl-LDH/BC can increase soil pH, and the available phosphorus content and available potassium content in soil. Compared with BC, CaAl-LDH/BC significantly reduced the available content of Cu and Pb in the active state (diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid extractable state) in the soil, and the passivation rate of Cu and Pb by a 2% dosage of CaAl-LDH/BC reached 47.85% and 37.9%, respectively. CaAl-LDH/BC can significantly enhance the relative abundance of beneficial microorganisms such as Actinobacteriota, Gemmatimonadota, and Luteimonas in the soil, which can help to enhance the tolerance and reduce the enrichment ability of plants to heavy metals. In addition, it was demonstrated by pea seedling (Pisum sativum L.) growing experiments that CaAl-LDH/BC increased plant fresh weight, root length, plant height, catalase (CAT) activity, and protein content, which promoted the growth of the plant. Compared with BC, CaAl-LDH/BC significantly reduced the Cu and Pb contents in pea seedlings, in which the Cu and Pb contents in pea seedlings were reduced from 31.97 mg/kg and 74.40 mg/kg to 2.92 mg/kg and 6.67 mg/kg, respectively, after a 2% dosage of CaAl-LDH/BC, which was a reduction of 90.84% and 91.03%, respectively. In conclusion, compared with BC, CaAl-LDH/BC improved soil fertility and thus the plant growth environment, and also more effectively reduced the mobility of heavy metals Cu and Pb in the soil to reduce the enrichment of Cu and Pb by plants.

Immature persimmon residue as a novel biosorbent for efficient removal of Pb(II) and Cr(VI) from wastewater: Performance and mechanisms

Owing to the powerful affinity of tannin toward heavy metal ions, it is frequently immobilized on adsorbents to enhance their adsorption properties. However, natural adsorbents containing tannin have been overlooked owing to its water solubility. Herein, a novel natural adsorbent based on the immature persimmon residue (IPR) with soluble tannin removed was fabricated to eliminate Pb(II) and Cr(VI) in aquatic environments. The insoluble tannin in IPR endowed it with prosperous properties for eliminating Pb(II) and Cr(VI), and the IPR achieved maximum Pb(II) and Cr(VI) adsorption quantities of 68.79 mg/g and 139.40 mg/g, respectively. Kinetics and isothermal adsorption analysis demonstrated that the removal behavior was controlled by monolayer chemical adsorption. Moreover, the IPR exhibited satisfactory Pb(II) and Cr(VI) removal efficiencies even in the presence of multiple coexisting ions and showed promising regeneration potential after undergoing five consecutive cycles. Additionally, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) analysis unveiled that the elimination mechanisms were primarily electrostatic attraction, chelation and reduction. Overall, the IPR, as a tannin-containing biosorbent, was verified to possess substantial potential for heavy metal removal, which can provide new insights into the development of novel natural adsorbents from the perspective of waste resource utilization.

Progress in layered double hydroxides (LDHs): Synthesis and application in adsorption, catalysis and photoreduction

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), also known as anionic clays, have attracted significant attention in energy and environmental applications due to their exceptional physicochemical properties. These materials possess a unique structure with surface hydroxyl groups, tunable properties, and high stability, making them highly desirable. In this review, the synthesis and functionalization of LDHs have been explored including co-precipitation and hydrothermal methods. Furthermore, extensive research on LDH application in toxic pollutant removal has shown that modifying or functionalizing LDHs using materials such as activated carbon, polymers, and inorganics is crucial for achieving efficient pollutant adsorption, improved cyclic performance, as well as effective catalytic oxidation of organics and photoreduction. This study offers a comprehensive overview of the progress made in the field of LDHs and LDH-based composites for water and wastewater treatment. It critically discusses and explains both direct and indirect synthesis and modification techniques, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages. Additionally, this review critically discusses and explains the potential of LDH-based composites as absorbents. Importantly, it focuses on the capability of LDH and LDH-based composites in heterogeneous catalysis, including the Fenton reaction, Fenton-like reactions, photocatalysis, and photoreduction, for the removal of organic dyes, organic micropollutants, and heavy metals. The mechanisms involved in pollutant removal, such as adsorption, electrostatic interaction, complexation, and degradation, are thoroughly explained. Finally, this study outlines future research directions in the field.

Enhanced copper (II) bioremediation from wastewater using nano magnetite (Fe3O4) modified biochar of Ascophyllum nodosum

Despite the remarkable Cu(II) sorption biochar potential, it is challenging to desorb them for repeated biochar usage. The present study aims to develop engineered biochar by polarizing Ascophyllum nodosum (seaweed) biomass and magnetizing it with Fe3O4 nanoparticles coating. SEM, EDX, XRD, BET, and FT-IR helped to characterize engineered biochar. Unlike conventional, magnetite biochar exhibited a significant Cu(II) removal potential from an aqueous solution at pH 5. The native and magnetic biochar removal efficiency was 75.2 % (36.99 mgg-1) and 90.27% (45.13 mgg-1), respectively. No significant change in temperature effect was observed. Adsorption study showed that magnetic biochar followed the Langmuir isotherm model with Qmax 53.19 mgg-1. Adsorption kinetics study indicates that magnetic biochar chemisorption dominates over physisorption. Thus, this study shows that seaweed-derived modified biochar could be the best alternative bioresource for removing heavy metals from wastewater. It can be reused to reduce the overall treatment cost of the process.

Enhancing sorption of layered double hydroxide-based magnetic biochar for arsenic and cadmium through optimized preparation protocols

The impact of multiple preparation protocols on properties and performance of modified biochar remains unclear. This study prepared layered double hydroxide (LDH)-based magnetic biochars (LMBCs) with different LDH loading rates (LLR), pyrolysis temperatures, and biomass sources to explore their performance-characterization relationships toward As(III) and Cd(II). Higher LLR and pyrolysis temperature enhanced LMBCs᾿ adsorption capacities by increasing specific surface area (SSA) and metal/O-containing groups. Hence, LMBC produced at 2:1 LLR (LDH: magnetic biochar) and 800 ℃ pyrolysis exhibited maximum adsorption over 2 times that of LMBC with 0.5:1 LLR and 400 ℃ pyrolysis. Bamboo-sourced LMBC demonstrated superior adsorption than sewage sludge and garlic-sourced LMBCs due to its increased SSA, enabling a higher loading of nano-LDH. Adsorption of As(III) and Cd(II) onto LMBCs was governed by metal-mineral and metal-containing group through co-precipitation and complexation. This study provides a reference for adjusting the preparation protocols to improve sorption performance of modified biochar toward multiple heavy metals.

Biosorption Potential of Arachis hypogaea-Derived Biochar for Cd and Ni, as Evidenced through Kinetic, Isothermal, and Thermodynamics Modeling

Biochar derived from plant biomass has great potential for the decontamination of aqueous media. It is the need of the hour to test biochar derived from economical, easily available, and novel materials. In this regard, the present study provides insight into the sorption of two heavy metals, i.e., cadmium (Cd) and nickel (Ni), using native Arachis hypogaea and its biochar prepared through pyrolysis. The effect of different factors, including interaction time, initial concentration of adsorbate, and temperature, as well as sorbent dosage, was studied on the sorption of Cd and Ni through a batch experiment. Characterization of the native biowaste and prepared biochar for its surface morphology and functional group identification was executed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results revealed the presence of different functional groups such as -OH on the surface of the adsorbent, which plays an important role in metal attachment. SEM reveals the irregular surface morphology of the adsorbent, which makes it easy for metal attachment. Thermogravimetric analysis shows the stability of A. hypogaea biochar up to 380 °C as compared with native adsorbent. The adsorption efficacy of A. hypogaea was found to be higher than that of native A. hypogaea for both metals. The best adsorption of Cd (94.5%) on biochar was observed at a concentration of 40 ppm, an adsorbent dosage of 2 g, a contact time of 100 min, and a temperature of 50 °C. While the optimum conditions for adsorption of Ni on biochar (97.2% adsorption) were reported at a contact time of 100 min, adsorbent dosage of 2.5 g, initial concentration of 60 ppm, and temperature of 50 °C. Results revealed that biochar offers better adsorption of metal ions as compared with raw samples at low concentrations. Isothermal studies show the adsorption mechanism as physical adsorption, and the negative value of Gibb's free energy confirms the spontaneous nature of the adsorption reaction. An increase in entropy value favors the adsorption process. Results revealed that the sorbent was a decent alternative to eliminate metal ions from the solution instead of costly adsorbents.

KOH-modified bamboo charcoal loaded with α-FeOOH for efficient adsorption of copper and fluoride ions from aqueous solution

In this work, bamboo charcoal (BC) is prepared by pyrolysis of bamboo. Then, KOH modification and surface deposition of Goethite (α-FeOOH) are performed to obtain a new KOH-modified BC loaded with α-FeOOH (FKBC) adsorbent for copper (Cu2+) and fluoride (F-) ion adsorption from aqueous solution. Surface morphology and physiochemical properties of the prepared adsorbent are characterized by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometer, X-ray diffraction, and N2 adsorption-desorption. The effect of pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, and initial concentration on Cu2+ and F- adsorption is also investigated. In addition, adsorption kinetics and isotherms are fitted to pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir model, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters suggest that the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption mechanism is further characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The Cu2+ absorption mainly occurs through ion exchange, coordination reactions, and surface precipitation, while the F- adsorption mainly occurs via ion exchange and hydrogen bonding. The selective adsorption experiments reveal that FKBC has good selectivity for Cu2+ and F-. The adsorption-desorption experimental results indicate that FKBC can be reused for Cu2+ and F- adsorption after regeneration. Results indicate that FKBC can be a promising adsorbent for Cu2+ and F- removal from aqueous solutions.

Optimization of LDO-Pectin Synthesis Conditions for the Removal of Metals from Wastewater: A Comparison of Response Surface Methods and Taguchi Approaches

With the continuous growth of industrialization, the presence of heavy metals (HMs) in the environment has become a critical issue, necessitating cost-effective and efficient techniques for their removal. The present study aimed to determine the optimal preparation conditions for synthesizing pectin (PC) as a polymer sorbent, combined with Magnesium (Mg) Aluminum (Al) layered double oxides (LDOs), using a fast and facile co-precipitation method. Both the response surface method (RSM) and the Taguchi method were employed to optimize the influence of key independent variables, including the molar ratio of cations Mg:Al, the ratio of pectin to LDO, and the temperature for removing multiple elements from wastewater. The results indicated that RSM is more accurate and examines more interactions, while Taguchi reduces the number of tests and is more economical than RSM. However, both statistical methods showed good potential for predicting the adsorption capacity (Qe) of HMs. The optimal preparation conditions were identified as a molar ratio of 3:1, a ratio of pectin to LDO of 7% w/w, and a temperature of approximately 600 °C. In conclusion, the application of RSM and Taguchi approaches was found to be feasible and effective in optimizing the preparation conditions of modified LDO, which can be utilized as a potential adsorbent for removing multiple elements from wastewater.

Insight into the roles of soluble, loosely bound and tightly bound extracellular polymeric substances produced by Enterobacter sp. in the Cd2+ and Pb2+ biosorption process: Characterization and mechanism

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) are macromolecular polymers formed by metabolic secretion, and they have great potential for removing heavy metal (HM) ions from the aquatic phase. In this study, the contributions of soluble EPSs (S-EPSs), loosely bound EPSs (LB-EPSs) and tightly bound EPSs (TB-EPSs) secreted by Enterobacter sp. to Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺ adsorption were analyzed. The results indicated that in a solution containing both Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺, pH= 6.0 was best suited for the adsorption process, and adsorption equilibrium was reached in approximately 120 min. Moreover, the mechanism for adsorption of Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺ by the different layers of EPSs involved spontaneous chemical processes. However, Cd²⁺ adsorption by the three layers of the EPSs was an exothermic process (∆H⁰ <0), but Pb²⁺ adsorption by the three layers of the EPSs was an endothermic process (∆H⁰ >0). The variations in zeta potentials indicated that ion exchange occurred during Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺ adsorption. FT-IR, XPS and 3D-EEM analyses indicated that the functional groups of the EPSs involved in adsorption were mainly the CO, C-O and C-O-C groups of the polysaccharides; furthermore, fulvic acid-like substances, humic-like substances and tyrosine-like proteins played important roles in the adsorption of Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺ by the different EPS layers.

CaFe-layered double hydroxide corn straw biochar reduced heavy metal uptake by Brassica campestris L. and Ipomoea aquatic F.: Rhizosphere effects and oxidative stress alleviation

In the present study, CaFe-layered double hydroxide corn straw biochar (CaFe-LDH@CSB) was applied to the rhizosphere soil of both pakchoi (Brassica campestris L. ssp. Chinensis Makino, B. campestris L.) and water spinach (Ipomoea aquatic F., I. aquatic F.) to explore and clarify the potential mechanism by which CaFe-LDH@CSB helps vegetables reduce heavy metal (HM) uptake and alleviate oxidative stress. Pot experiments were conducted with CaFe-LDH@CSB applied at four levels: control (CK), T1 (5 g kg^-1), T2 (10 g kg^-1) and T3 (20 g kg^-1). The results indicated that the application of CaFe-LDH@CSB significantly increased pH and decreased the acid-soluble forms of Cd, Pb, Zn and Cu in the rhizosphere soil of both B. campestris L. and I. aquatic F.; decreases of 39.4%, 18.0%, 10.0% and 33.3% in B. campestris L. and of 26.6%, 49.1%, 13.2% and 36.8% in I. aquatic F., respectively, were observed at the T3 level. Moreover, CaFe-LDH@CSB application reduced HM uptake by B. campestris L. and decreased HM-induced oxidative stress through the regulation of soil physicochemical properties and microbial abundance. For B. campestris L., variations in Sordariomycetes helped alleviate the accumulation of HMs in the aerial part, while GSH and -SH from the nonenzymatic system played an important role in scavenging H₂O₂ in leaves, thus helping B. campestris L. alleviate HM-induced oxidative stress. For I. aquatica F., variations in Vicinamibacteria and Mortierellomycetes helped alleviate the accumulation of HMs in plants, while GSH and PCs from nonenzymatic systems played an important role in removing ·O₂^- in leaves, thereby helping I. aquatica F. alleviate HM-induced oxidation stress. Our study indicated that the application of CaFe-LDH@CSB improved the rhizosphere soil environment and rebuilt the soil microbial community, helping B. campestris L. and I. aquatica F. alleviate HM-induced oxidative stress and promoting the growth of both vegetables.
