Organic ultraviolet absorbents in soils and typical plants from an industrial metropolis in China: Concentrations, profiles and environmental implications

Distribution characteristics and sources of ultraviolet absorbents in facility agricultural soils in China

The environmental contamination of ultraviolet absorbents (UVAs) has attracted global attention for the persistence, bioaccumulation and ecotoxicity. However, little is known about the content and distribution characteristics of UVAs in agricultural soils, especially in facility agricultural soils. In this study, the contents and distribution characteristics of 16 UVAs were surveyed in agricultural facility soils (N = 61) and field soil samples (N = 61) from 27 provinces in China. The total content of 16 UVAs (Σ16UVAs) in facility soils (mean 64.2 ± 55.4 ng/g) was higher than that in field soils (mean 9.66 ± 7.66 ng/g), suggesting that UVAs in facility soils are associated with mulch film. The Σ16UVAs content in the soil mulched with biodegradable (PBAT) film was higher than that in the soil mulched with polyethylene (PE) film, which indicated that the UVA pollution in the soil mulched with biodegradable film was more serious. With the continuous promotion of the use of biodegradable films may pose a threat to soil and ecological health. Therefore, studies on the content and distribution characteristics of UVAs in facility soils are needed to provide scientific basis for the controlling and monitoring of novel pollutants.

Understudied and underestimated impacts of organic UV filters on terrestrial ecosystems

Organic UV filters (OUVFs) are vital components in various personal care products (PCPs) and commercial goods, with the annual consumption estimated at 10,000 tons. Consequently, the unavoidable use of OUVFs in PCPs and other unregulated commercial applications could present a considerable risk to human and environmental health. These chemical entities enter terrestrial ecosystems through wastewater discharge, agriculture, atmospheric deposition, and recreational activities. Compared to aqueous ecosystems, the effects of OUVFs on terrestrial environments should be more studied and potentially underestimated. The present review addresses the abovementioned gap by summarizing 189 studies conducted between 2006 and 2024, focusing on the analytical measures, occurrence, and ecotoxicological effects of OUVFs on terrestrial ecosystems. These studies underscore the harmful effects of certain OUVFs on the development, reproduction, and endocrine systems of terrestrial organisms, highlighting the necessity for comprehensive toxicological assessments to understand their impacts on non-target species in terrestrial ecosystems. Besides, by underscoring the ecological effects of OUVFs, this review aims to guide future research and inform regulatory measures to mitigate the risks posed by these widespread contaminants. Meanwhile, interdisciplinary research is essential, integrating environmental science, toxicology, ecology, and chemistry to tackle OUVF challenges in terrestrial ecosystems.

Solvent extraction of UV stabilizers in plastics: A step towards methodology harmonization

The environmental pollution caused by plastics and their chemical additives has drawn global attention. UV stabilizers are among the major plastic additives that were used to protect against discoloration and degradation under sunlight. They are recognized as harmful due to its persistence, bioaccumulation, adverse effects, and potential for long-range environmental transport via plastics. However, non-harmonized methodology to analysis UV stabilizers in plastics has brought remarkable challenge to compile data across studies and conduct further risk assessment. Especially, the extraction solvent was diverse, whereas their extract efficiency was unknown. To address this knowledge gap, this study assessed the extraction efficiency of three commonly used organic solvents (dichloromethane (DCM), methanol (MeOH) and toluene (PhMe)) for UV stabilizers in different type of plastics, including foil-based polymer (Polyethylene, Polypropylene, Polystyrene, and Polyethylene terephthalate), bio-based plastics (Polylactic acid) and tire rubber. A total of 8 UV stabilizers were detected with a concentration range between 0.01 and 257.94 μg/g. OC had the highest detection rate (100%) and concentration (0.21-257.94 μg/g). The extraction performance of the three extractants was further evaluated, and it was found that not only the extraction performance but also the stability, DCM performed significantly better than MeOH and PhMe.

Uptake, accumulation and metabolism of UV-320 in vegetables and its impact on growth and quality

UV-320 is classified as a Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC) by the European Chemicals Agency and has attracted significant attention due to its presence in the environment. Understanding the uptake, translocation and metabolic patterns of UV-320 in vegetables is essential for assessing their ability to bioaccumulate and potential risks to human health. In this study, we investigated the uptake and translocation of UV-320 in lettuce and radish by hydroponic experiments. The results showed that the root concentration factors (Croot/Csolution, RCF) of lettuce and radish were in the range of 47.9 to 464 mL/g and 194 to 787 mL/g, respectively. The transfer factors (Cshoot/Croot, TF) were observed to be 0.001-0.012 for lettuce and 0.02-0.05 for radish. Additionally, non-targeted screening identified twelve phase I and one phase II metabolites of UV-320 in vegetables, which were confirmed based on their molecular formulas and structures. The metabolic pathways involving oxidation, ketonylation and deamination were proposed in vegetables. Also, we have observed that UV-320 inhibits the growth of vegetables. Meanwhile, we evaluated the health risk of UV-320 in lettuce and radish and found that the consumption of lettuce is relatively safe, while the consumption of radish has a risk of HQ >1 for both adults and children, which should be seriously considered. This study provides valuable insights into the behavior and ecological risks of UV-320 in the environment.
