Highly Efficient Room-Temperature Light-Induced Synthesis of Polymer Dots: A Programming Control Paradigm of Polymer Nanostructurization from Single-Component Precursor

Polymer dots (PDs) have raised considerable research interest due to their advantages of designable nanostructures, high biocompatibility, versatile photoluminescent properties, and recyclability as nanophase. However, there remains a lack of in situ, real-time, and noncontact methods for synthesizing PDs. Here we report a rational strategy to synthesize PDs through a well-designed single-component precursor (an asymmetrical donor-acceptor-donor' molecular structure) by photoirradiation at ambient temperature. In contrast to thermal processes that normally lack atomic economy, our method is mild and successive, based on an aggregation-promoted sulfonimidization triggered by photoinduced delocalized intrinsic radical cations for polymerization, followed by photooxidation for termination with structural shaping to form PDs. This synthetic approach excludes any external additives, rendering a conversion rate of the precursor exceeding 99%. The prepared PDs, as a single entity, can realize the integration of nanocore luminescence and precursor-transferred luminescence, showing 41.5% of the total absolute luminescence quantum efficiency, which is higher than most reported PD cases. Based on these photoluminescent properties, together with the superior biocompatibility, a unique membrane microenvironmental biodetection could be exemplified. This strategy with programming control of the single precursor can serve as a significant step toward polymer nanomanufacturing with remote control, high-efficiency, precision, and real-time operability.

Isomerization-induced fluorescence enhancement of two new viologen derivatives: mechanism insight and DFT calculations

The dark-colored viologen radical cations are unstable in air and easily fade, thus greatly limiting their applications. If a suitable substituent is introduced into the structure, it will have the dual function of chromism and luminescence, which will broaden its application field. Here, Vio1·2Cl and Vio2·2Br were synthesized by introducing aromatic acetophenone and naphthophenone substituents into the viologen structure. The keto group (-CH₂CO-) on the substituents is prone to isomerize into the enol structure (-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]COH-) in organic solvents, especially in DMSO, resulting in a larger conjugated system to stabilize the molecular structure and enhance fluorescence. The time-dependent fluorescence spectrum shows obvious keto-to-enol isomerization-induced fluorescence enhancement. The quantum yield also increased significantly (T = 1 day, Φ_Vio1 = 25.81%, Φ_Vio2 = 41.44%; T = 7 days, Φ_Vio1 = 31.48%, and Φ_Vio2 = 54.40%) in DMSO. The NMR and ESI-MS data at different times further confirmed that the fluorescence enhancement was caused by isomerization, and no other fluorescent impurities were produced in solution. DFT calculations show that the enol form is almost coplanar throughout the molecular structure, which is conducive to stabilizing the structure and enhancing fluorescence. The fluorescence emission peaks of the keto and enol structures of Vio1²⁺ and Vio2²⁺ were at 416-417 nm and 563-582 nm, respectively. The fluorescence relative oscillator strength of Vio1²⁺ and Vio2²⁺ enol structures is significantly higher than that of keto structures (f value changes from 1.53 to 2.63 for Vio1²⁺ and from 1.62 to 2.81 for Vio2²⁺), indicating stronger fluorescence emission of the enol structure. The calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental results. Vio1·2Cl and Vio2·2Br are the first examples of isomerization-induced fluorescence enhancement of viologen derivatives, which shows strong solvatofluorochromism under UV light, making up for the disadvantage that it is easy for a viologen radical to fade in air, and providing a new strategy for designing and synthesizing viologen materials with strong fluorescence.

Augmenting the Performance of Hydrogenase for Aerobic Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution via Solvent Tuning

This work showcases the performance of [NiFeSe] hydrogenase from Desulfomicrobium baculatum for solar-driven hydrogen generation in a variety of organic-based deep eutectic solvents. Despite its well-known sensitivity towards air and organic solvents, the hydrogenase shows remarkable performance under an aerobic atmosphere in these solvents when paired with a TiO2 photocatalyst. Tuning the water content further increases hydrogen evolution activity to a TOF of 60±3 s-1 and quantum yield to 2.3±0.4 % under aerobic conditions, compared to a TOF of 4 s-1 in a purely aqueous solvent. Contrary to common belief, this work therefore demonstrates that placing natural hydrogenases into non-natural environments can enhance their intrinsic activity beyond their natural performance, paving the way for full water splitting using hydrogenases.

The Green Box: Selenoviologen-Based Tetracationic Cyclophane for Electrochromism, Host-Guest Interactions, and Visible-Light Photocatalysis

The novel selenoviologen-based tetracationic cyclophanes (green boxes 3 and 5) with rigid electron-deficient cavities are synthesized via S_N2 reactions in two steps. The green boxes exhibit good redox properties, narrow energy gaps, and strong absorption in the visible range (370-470 nm), especially for the green box 5 containing two selenoviologen (SeV²⁺) units. Meanwhile, the femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) reveals that the green boxes have a stabilized dicationic biradical, high efficiency of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), and long-lived charge separation state due to the formation of cyclophane structure. Based on the excellent photophysical and redox properties, the green boxes are applied to electrochromic devices (ECDs) and visible-light-driven hydrogen production with a high H₂ generation rate (34 μmol/h), turnover number (203), and apparent quantum yield (5.33 × 10^-2). In addition, the host-guest recognitions are demonstrated between the green boxes and electron-rich guests (e.g., G1:1-naphthol and G2:platinum(II)-tethered naphthalene) in MeCN through C-H···π and π···π interactions. As a one-component system, the host-guest complexes of green box⊃G2 are successfully applied to visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen production due to the intramolecular electron transfer (IET) between platinum(II) of G2 and SeV²⁺ of the green box, which provides a simplified system for solar energy conversion.

An Antitumor Dual-Responsive Host-Guest Supramolecular Polymer Based on Hypoxia-Cleavable Azocalix[4]arene

The exploitation of specific guests which can respond to external stimuli is the main approach for the construction of stimuli-responsive supramolecular polymers (SPs) based on host-guest interactions. Most functional guests, however, fail to manifest stimuli-responses. Herein, a hypoxia-responsive dimeric azocalixarene (D-SAC4A) with outstanding hosting properties was used as the macrocyclic building block for the preparation of host stimuli-responsive SPs. Since azocalixarenes can also be compatible with stimuli-responsive guests, an antitumor drug, camptothecin (CPT), was chosen and linked via a disulfide-containing linker to afford a glutathione (GSH)-responsive ditropic guest (D-CPT). A unique dual-responsive SP was obtained by 1 : 1 mixing of D-SAC4A and D-CPT in water, which further assembled into SP nanoparticles (DSPNs). DSPNs displayed outstanding stability against dilution and biological interferants, as well as precise CPT-release under GSH and hypoxia conditions. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated the good biosafety and tumor-suppressive effects of DSPNs.

A persistent radical anion derived from a propeller-shaped perylene bisimide-carbazole pentad

Stabilizing reactive radical ions promises outstanding performances in photocatalysis, organic optoelectronics and photothermal therapies, but it remains a challenge. In this contribution, we firstly report a persistent radical anion (PBI˙^--4Cz) derived from a propeller-shaped electron-deficient perylene bisimide-based pentad (PBI-4Cz). Detailed investigations confirm that PBI˙^--4Cz could intactly exist under inert conditions, and its lifetime is sufficiently prolonged up to more than one week under ambient atmosphere. Such exceptional stability is ascribed to the synergistic effect of the high electron-affinity and structural shielding originating from the compact spatial arrangement of PBI-4Cz. This work contributes to rational design and appropriate chemical construction of stable open-shell species.

Ultrastable radicals in naphthalenediimide-based materials and their stimulus-boosting near-infrared photothermal conversion

Ultrastable radicals in NDI-based crystals are formed by intrinsic electron transfer. Extra light or heat can effectively promote electron transfer, leading to more air-, light- and heat-stable radicals with efficient NIR photothermal conversion.

Nanoparticle surfactants for kinetically arrested photoactive assemblies to track light-induced electron transfer

Nature controls the assembly of complex architectures through self-limiting processes; however, few artificial strategies to mimic these processes have been reported to date. Here we demonstrate a system comprising two types of nanocrystal (NC), where the self-limiting assembly of one NC component controls the aggregation of the other. Our strategy uses semiconducting InP/ZnS core-shell NCs (3 nm) as effective assembly modulators and functional nanoparticle surfactants in cucurbit[n]uril-triggered aggregation of AuNCs (5-60 nm), allowing the rapid formation (within seconds) of colloidally stable hybrid aggregates. The resultant assemblies efficiently harvest light within the semiconductor substructures, inducing out-of-equilibrium electron transfer processes, which can now be simultaneously monitored through the incorporated surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy-active plasmonic compartments. Spatial confinement of electron mediators (for example, methyl viologen (MV²⁺)) within the hybrids enables the direct observation of photogenerated radical species as well as molecular recognition in real time, providing experimental evidence for the formation of elusive σ-(MV⁺)₂ dimeric species. This approach paves the way for widespread use of analogous hybrids for the long-term real-time tracking of interfacial charge transfer processes, such as the light-driven generation of radicals and catalysis with operando spectroscopies under irreversible conditions.

Anti-Sandwich Structured Photo-Electronic Wound Dressing for Highly Efficient Bacterial Infection Therapy

Photo-electronic devices based on reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation suffer a crucial limitation in wound treatment due to their sandwich structure, which prevents the contact of ROS with wound tissue. In this work, the first anti-sandwich structured visible-light/electricity dual-responsive wound dressing is constructed for treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), based on selenoviologen-appendant polythiophene (SeV²⁺ -PT)-containing polyacrylamide hydrogels. The new wound dressing is named an anti-sandwich structured photo-electronic wound dressing (PEWD). The unique structure of PEWD enables its use in synergistic electrodynamic and photodynamic therapy (EDT and PDT), providing rapid, on-demand, and sustained generation of ROS in situ via short-time light irradiation and/or wireless-controlled electrification. The PEWD possesses good flexibility, excellent biocompatibility, and fast response, as well as sustained ROS generation in a physiological environment. Animal experiments demonstrate effective ROS generation in 6 s under irradiation and electrification, inhibiting infection at an early stage, and substantially shortening the healing time of bacterial infection (to within 7 days). This proof-of-concept research holds great promise in developing new flexible PEWD, and novel strategies to improve wound treatment.

Lighting up solid states using a rubber

It is crucial and desirable to develop green and high-efficient strategies to regulate solid-state structures and their related material properties. However, relative to solution, it is more difficult to break and generate chemical bonds in solid states. In this work, a rubbing-induced photoluminescence on the solid states of ortho-pyridinil phenol family was achieved. This rubbing response relied on an accurately designed topochemical tautomerism, where a negative charge, exactly provided by the triboelectric effect of a rubber, can induce a proton transfer in a double H-bonded dimeric structure. This process instantaneously led to a bright-form tautomer that can be stabilized in the solid-state settings, leading to an up to over 450-fold increase of the fluorescent quantum yield of the materials. The property can be repeatedly used due to the reversibility of the tautomerism, enabling encrypted applications. Moreover, a further modification to the structure can be accomplished to achieve different properties, opening up more possibilities for the design of new-generation smart materials.

Changes in molecular properties due to stimuli response are critically important for the development of new materials. However, most processes are slow or inefficient in the solid state. Here the authors demonstrate property switching in the solid state using a rubbing-induced tautomerism in multiple hydrogen-bonded donor-acceptor couples.
