Bayesian Machine Learning for Efficient Minimization of Defects in ALD Passivation Layers

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is an enabling technology for encapsulating sensitive materials owing to its high-quality, conformal coating capability. Finding the optimum deposition parameters is vital to achieving defect-free layers; however, the high dimensionality of the parameter space makes a systematic study on the improvement of the protective properties of ALD films challenging. Machine-learning (ML) methods are gaining credibility in materials science applications by efficiently addressing these challenges and outperforming conventional techniques. Accordingly, this study reports the ML-based minimization of defects in an ALD-Al₂O₃ passivation layer for the corrosion protection of metallic copper using Bayesian optimization (BO). In all experiments, BO consistently minimizes the layer defect density by finding the optimum deposition parameters in less than three trials. Electrochemical tests show that the optimized layers have virtually zero film porosity and achieve five orders of magnitude reduction in corrosion current as compared to control samples. Optimized parameters of surface pretreatment using Ar/H₂ plasma, the deposition temperature above 200 °C, and 60 ms pulse time quadruple the corrosion resistance. The significant optimization of ALD layers presented in this study demonstrates the effectiveness of BO and its potential outreach to a broader audience, focusing on different materials and processes in materials science applications.

Preparation of Ferrotitanium Using Ilmenite with Different Reduction Degrees

The effect of ilmenite with different reduction degrees on the production of ferrotitanium, using a self-propagation high-temperature synthesis method with aluminum as the reducing agent, was investigated. Increasing the degree of reduction not only contributed to lower consumption of aluminum, but also lowered the oxygen content and improved the grades of titanium and iron in the ferrotitanium. The aluminum content of the ferrotitanium increased with an increase in the extent of reduction of ilmenite, so the Al2O3 content formed in the slag decreased with the constant addition of CaO and CaF2 to the Al powder. This decreased relatively the content of high-melting-point CaAl12O19 and increased the contents of low-melting-point CaAl2O4 and CaF2 in the slag, thereby promoting the separation of ferrotitanium and slag. Improving the reduction degree of ilmenite is beneficial to the preparation of ferrotitanium.

Copper-based nanomaterials for environmental decontamination - An overview on technical and toxicological aspects

Synthesis of the various types of engineered nanomaterials has gained a huge attention in recent years for various applications. Copper based nanomaterials are a branch of this category seem to be able to provide an efficient and cost-effective way for the treatment of the persistent effluents. The present work aimed to study the various parameters may involve in the overall performance of the copper based nanomaterials for environmental clean-up purposes. To this end, the related characteristics of copper based nanomaterials and their effects on the nanomaterials reactivity and the environmental and operating parameters have been critically reviewed. Toxicological study of the copper based nanomaterials has been also considered as a factor with high importance for the selection of a typical nanomaterial with optimum performance and minimum environmental and health subsequent effects.

Applying Taguchi design and large-scale strategy for mycosynthesis of nano-silver from endophytic Trichoderma harzianum SYA.F4 and its application against phytopathogens

Development of reliable and low-cost requirement for large-scale eco-friendly biogenic synthesis of metallic nanoparticles is an important step for industrial applications of bionanotechnology. In the present study, the mycosynthesis of spherical nano-Ag (12.7 ± 0.8 nm) from extracellular filtrate of local endophytic T. harzianum SYA.F4 strain which have interested mixed bioactive metabolites (alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, phenols, nitrate reductase (320 nmol/hr/ml), carbohydrate (25 μg/μl) and total protein concentration (2.5 g/l) was reported. Industrial mycosynthesis of nano-Ag can be induced with different characters depending on the fungal cultivation and physical conditions. Taguchi design was applied to improve the physicochemical conditions for nano-Ag production, and the optimum conditions which increased its mass weight 3 times larger than a basal condition were as follows: AgNO3 (0.01 M), diluted reductant (10 v/v, pH 5) and incubated at 30 °C, 200 rpm for 24 hr. Kinetic conversion rates in submerged batch cultivation in 7 L stirred tank bioreactor on using semi-defined cultivation medium was as follows: the maximum biomass production (Xmax) and maximum nano-Ag mass weight (Pmax) calculated (60.5 g/l and 78.4 g/l respectively). The best nano-Ag concentration that formed large inhibition zones was 100 μg/ml which showed against A.alternate (43 mm) followed by Helminthosporium sp. (35 mm), Botrytis sp. (32 mm) and P. arenaria (28 mm).
