Examining an In-Home Behavioral Parent Training Protocol Among Parents Who Use Substances Involved Child Welfare: Effectiveness of SafeCare

Given the detrimental impact of substance use (SU) on both parent and child outcomes including child maltreatment, research and service efforts have focused on incorporating parenting resources into integrated SU treatment programs. While promising, it is imperative to examine and test parenting programs in a variety of settings. This study examined whether SU moderated the relationship between treatment condition and parenting outcomes among parents who participated in SafeCare, and parent ratings of engagement, service satisfaction, and perceived cultural competency of services. Results indicated that SU did not moderate the relationship between treatment condition and abuse potential, but did moderate this relationship for depression and parental distress such that parents with higher levels of SU reported less improvement in depression and parental distress. Results underscore that SU problems may impact the effectiveness of SC on specific risk factors, such as depression and parental distress, potentially indicating unique treatment needs and the need to adapt interventions to ensure treatment success. In addition, this study found that SafeCare was not found to be beneficial for parents with SU problems above and beyond the treatment as usual condition. Finally, results indicated that parents with SU concerns and without SU concerns engaged very similarly in SafeCare.

Using systemic interventions to reduce intimate partner violence or child maltreatment: A systematic review of publications between 2010 and 2019

This systematic review seeks to understand the effectiveness of systemic interventions to reduce Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) or child maltreatment published between January 2010 and December 2019. We found nine studies reviewing systemic interventions for IPV and 12 studies reviewing systemic interventions for child maltreatment. In our discussion, we added relevant articles published before 2010 to determine the overall state of the evidence for these interventions. We determined that parent training programs with in vivo coaching components for child maltreatment meet the criteria for well-established interventions. Relationship education approaches are probably efficacious. Parent education and family therapy programs to reduce child maltreatment, and cognitive behavioral couples treatment to reduce IPV are possibly efficacious interventions. Programs based on "naturalistic" couples therapy for IPV are experimental interventions. This review also highlights limitations in this research in addressing the needs of marginalized couples and families.

Experiences of interaction between teenage mothers and visiting nurses: a phenomenological study

OBJECTIVE

To understand the experiences of interaction between teenage mothers and visiting nurses in the Young Mothers Caregivers Program.

METHOD

Qualitative research using the theoretical-methodological framework of Social Phenomenology, with phenomenological interviews with visiting nurses and teenage mothers.

RESULTS

Three visiting nurses and nine teenage mothers participated. The understanding of the experiences led to the elaboration of three categories of contexts of meanings related to the past and present: "Experiences of participation in the PJMC"; "The interaction experienced by visiting nurses and teenage mothers"; "Parenting and maternal role".

CONCLUSION

The interaction between visiting nurses and teenage mothers in the program was characterized as positive, as it provided the mother with greater security in her maternal and parental role. The attitudes of nurses and adolescent mothers were fundamental for establishing a positive interaction.
