Comparison of two methods of measuring wood pyrolysis tar

Selection of the Second Adsorbent for Sampling Volatile Organic Compounds in the Biomass Gasification Tar Using Solid-Phase Adsorption

The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of a solid-phase adsorption method for measuring the concentrations of tar compounds in biomass. This method involves collecting tars on a column with an amino-phase sorbent. However, because biomass tar has a high concentration of volatile organic compounds, not all of them can be collected with just one column. Therefore, the researchers decided to add a second column with a different adsorbent to improve the accuracy of the measurement. They also chose to test three different sorbents (Carbopack B, Carbotrap, and activated coconut charcoal) in order to determine which one is the most effective for determining the concentration of volatile organic compounds. The desorption efficiency from various sorbents, the adsorption efficiency of the studied compounds on each sorbent depending on the sampled gas temperature, and the maximal amounts of compounds adsorbed on activated coconut charcoal were evaluated. The best results were obtained using activated coconut charcoal. A modified sampling device consisting of 500 mg of the amino-phase adsorbent and 100 mg of activated coconut charcoal was selected as the optimal choice for collecting tar, including its volatile organic compounds, from the synthesis gas generated during biomass gasification.

Removal of Tar Contents Derived from Lignocellulosic Biomass Gasification Facilities Using MgAl-LDH@clinoptilolite

Gasification of lignocellulosic biomass requires the effective removal method of tar. This study focused on the application of specially designed Mg/Al-layered double hydroxides clinoptilolite (Mg/Al-LDH@clinoptilolite) to improve the removal efficiency of tar, which would eventually lead to enhancing the power efficiency of gasification, preventing damage to facilities, and deducing durability improvement plans. Zeolite-layered double hydroxides impregnated with clinoptilolite, a natural zeolite, and Mg/Al-layered double hydroxide incorporated into conventional water scrubbers were prepared to enhance the removal efficiency of the tar and improve the quality of the syngas produced during the gasification process. The simultaneous removal of moisture and CO2 in the syngas was also investigated during the removal of the tar. The drastic decrease in tar and CO2 concentration was confirmed, which triggered a relative increase in the effective content of inflammable gas. The findings of the present study provide a practical approach to increasing power efficiency and durability during the gasification of lignocellulosic biomass.

Nuclear Ensemble Approach with Importance Sampling

We show that the importance sampling technique can effectively augment the range of problems where the nuclear ensemble approach can be applied. A sampling probability distribution function initially determines the collection of initial conditions for which calculations are performed, as usual. Then, results for a distinct target distribution are computed by introducing compensating importance sampling weights for each sampled point. This mapping between the two probability distributions can be performed whenever they are both explicitly constructed. Perhaps most notably, this procedure allows for the computation of temperature dependent observables. As a test case, we investigated the UV absorption spectra of phenol, which has been shown to have a marked temperature dependence. Application of the proposed technique to a range that covers 500 K provides results that converge to those obtained with conventional sampling. We further show that an overall improved rate of convergence is obtained when sampling is performed at intermediate temperatures. The comparison between calculated and the available measured cross sections is very satisfactory, as the main features of the spectra are correctly reproduced. As a second test case, one of Tully's classical models was revisited, and we show that the computation of dynamical observables also profits from the importance sampling technique. In summary, the strategy developed here can be employed to assess the role of temperature for any property calculated within the nuclear ensemble method, with the same computational cost as doing so for a single temperature.

Biochemical fingerprint and pharmacological applications of Barleria noctiflora L.f. leaves

Background Antioxidant and antihistamine agents from Barleria noctiflora L.f. as natural source due to the existing modern medicine give various adverse effects to overcome these problems with natural products. MethodsB. noctiflora leaves extract was fractionated with column chromatography; the homogenized fractions were monitored with thin layer chromatography (TLC) and characterized by using UV-visible, FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and mass spectrometry spectral studies. The volatile phytoconstituents of B. noctiflora extract were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Phytoconstituents from B. noctiflora leaves extract were screened for their antioxidant and antihistamine potential in vitro (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity, 2,2'-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiozoline-6-sulfonic acid radical decolouration assay, nitric oxide radical scavenging activity, superoxide radical scavenging activity and hydrogen peroxide radical scavenging activity) and in silico (molecular docking), respectively. Results Antioxidant and antihistamine barlerinoside has been isolated and characterized from the leaves of B. noctiflora L.f. Barlerinoside revealed their free-radical scavenging ability on OH-, OH•, NO-, O2- and H2O2 radicals and found high percentage inhibition against OH- radical at the IC50 value of 50.45±2.52  µg. The methanol (MeOH) extract of B. noctiflora leaves contains cyclotene; N,N-dimethylglycine; tetrahydrocyclopenta [1,3] dioxin-4-one; phenol, 2-methoxy-; benzofuran, 2-methyl-; 1,4:3,6-dianhydro-α-d-glucopyranose; 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol; 1,3;2,5-dimethylene-l-rhamnitol; levoglucosan and bicyclo[2.2.2]oct-7-ene-2,5-dione as being the major compounds. Among phytoconstituents present in the extract, the hexestrol; 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid, bis(2-methylpropyl) ester; 1-(3,6,6-trimethyl-1,6,7,7a-tetrahydrocyclopenta[c]pyran-1-yl) ethanone; megastigmatrienone; furan interacted with histamine H1 receptor and bind at GLU-177 and ASP-178 with high binding energy score -13.95, -13.41, -12.56, -12.03, and -11.72 kcal/mol, respectively, and the expected hydrolysed products of compound-1a and compound-1b from barlerinoside showed -8.91 and -8.68 kcal/mol binding energy against the histamine H1 receptor. This showed that the active ligands exactly bind with active binding site of the protein. ConclusionsWe can conclude that isolated barlerinoside from B. noctflora L.f. has potent antioxidant activity against synthetic free radicals and antihistamine activity against histamine H1 receptor.

Fates of Chemical Elements in Biomass during Its Pyrolysis

Biomass is increasingly perceived as a renewable resource rather than as an organic solid waste today, as it can be converted to various chemicals, biofuels, and solid biochar using modern processes. In the past few years, pyrolysis has attracted growing interest as a promising versatile platform to convert biomass into valuable resources. However, an efficient and selective conversion process is still difficult to be realized due to the complex nature of biomass, which usually makes the products complicated. Furthermore, various contaminants and inorganic elements (e.g., heavy metals, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, and chlorine) embodied in biomass may be transferred into pyrolysis products or released into the environment, arousing environmental pollution concerns. Understanding their behaviors in biomass pyrolysis is essential to optimizing the pyrolysis process for efficient resource recovery and less environmental pollution. However, there is no comprehensive review so far about the fates of chemical elements in biomass during its pyrolysis. Here, we provide a critical review about the fates of main chemical elements (C, H, O, N, P, Cl, S, and metals) in biomass during its pyrolysis. We overview the research advances about the emission, transformation, and distribution of elements in biomass pyrolysis, discuss the present challenges for resource-oriented conversion and pollution abatement, highlight the importance and significance of understanding the fate of elements during pyrolysis, and outlook the future development directions for process control. The review provides useful information for developing sustainable biomass pyrolysis processes with an improved efficiency and selectivity as well as minimized environmental impacts, and encourages more research efforts from the scientific communities of chemistry, the environment, and energy.

Analysis of pure tar substances (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) in the gas stream using ultraviolet visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy and multivariate curve resolution (MCR)

The analysis of tar, mostly characterized as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), describes a topic that has been researched for years. An online analysis of tar in the gas stream in particular is needed to characterize the tar conversion or formation in the biomass gasification process. The online analysis in the gas is carried out with ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy (190-720 nm). This online analysis is performed with a measuring cell developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology (ICT). To this day, online tar measurements using UV-Vis spectroscopy have not been carried out in detail. Therefore, PAHs are analyzed as follows. The measurements are split into different steps. The first step to prove the online method is to vaporize single tar substances. These experiments show that a qualitative analysis of PAHs in the gas stream with the used measurement setup is possible. Furthermore, it is shown that the method provides very exact results, so that a differentiation of various PAHs is possible. The next step is to vaporize a PAH mixture. This step consists of vaporizing five pure substances almost simultaneously. The interpretation of the resulting data is made using a chemometric interpretation method, the multivariate curve resolution (MCR). The verification of the calculated results is the main aim of this experiment. It has been shown that the tar mixture can be analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively (in arbitrary units) in detail using the MCR. Finally it is the main goal of this paper to show the first steps in the applicability of the UV-Vis spectroscopy and the measurement setup on online tar analysis in view of characterizing the biomass gasification process. Due to that, the gasification plant (at the laboratory scale), developed and constructed by the Fraunhofer ICT, has been used to vaporize these substances. Using this gasification plant for the experiments enables the usage of the measurement setup also for the spectroscopic analysis of the tar formation during the biomass gasification.

Diffusion and Equilibrium Adsorption Coefficients of Aromatic Hydrocarbon Species in Capillary Columns

This study focuses on a mathematical description of elution of aromatic species in a 30 m×0.25 mm×0.25 μm BPX5 capillary column. Experimental studies involve the detection of chemical species at the capillary column outlet. Using the recorded peaks, statistical moments of different orders are calculated for both toluene and naphthalene. Modeling studies involve a laminar flow model with an equilibrium coefficient (Ks) and a solute diffusion coefficient in the stationary phase (Ds). Model validation is developed by performing experiments at different carrier gas velocities and GC oven temperatures. Under the conditions, neither the first statistical moment (M1) nor the second statistical moment (M2) is affected by the carrier gas velocity. Thus, the interface equilibrium coefficients (Ks) and the diffusion coefficients (Ds) solely depend on the solute and the capillary column polymer coating properties. Furthermore, the statistical moments of different orders show that the proposed interface equilibrium based model in the “narrow bore” 30 m×0.25 mm×0.25 μm BPX5 capillary column is adequate for aromatic species such as toluene and naphthalene.

Aromatic chemicals by iron-catalyzed hydrotreatment of lignin pyrolysis vapor

Lignin is a potential renewable material for the production of bio-sourced aromatic chemicals. We present the first hydrotreatment of lignin pyrolysis vapors, before any condensation, using inexpensive and sustainable iron-silica (Fe/SiO2 ) and iron-activated carbon (Fe/AC) catalysts. Lignin pyrolysis was conducted in a tubular reactor and vapors were injected in a fixed bed of catalysts (673 K, 1 bar) with stacks to investigate the profile of coke deposit. More than 170 GC-analyzable compounds were identified by GCxGC (heart cutting)/flame ionization detector mass spectrometry. Lignin oligomers were analyzed by very high resolution mass spectrometry, called the "petroleomic" method. They are trapped by the catalytic fixed bed and, in particular, by the AC. The catalysts showed a good selectivity for the hydrodeoxygenation of real lignin vapors to benzene, toluene, xylenes, phenol, cresols, and alkyl phenols. The spent catalysts were characterized by temperature-programmed oxidation, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and N2 sorption. Micropores in the Fe/AC catalyst are completely plugged by coke deposits, whereas the mesoporous structure of Fe/SiO2 is unaffected. TEM images reveal two different types of coke deposit: 1) catalytic coke deposited in the vicinity of iron particles and 2) thermal coke (carbonaceous particles ≈1 μm in diameter) formed from the gas-phase growth of lignin oligomers.

The origin of molecular mobility during biomass pyrolysis as revealed by in situ (1)H NMR spectroscopy

The thermochemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass feedstocks offers an important potential route for the production of biofuels and value-added green chemicals. Pyrolysis is the first phenomenon involved in all biomass thermochemical processes and it controls to a major extent the product composition. The composition of pyrolysis products can be affected markedly by the extent of softening that occurs. In spite of extensive work on biomass pyrolysis, the development of fluidity during the pyrolysis of biomass has not been quantified. This paper provides the first experimental investigation of proton mobility during biomass pyrolysis by in situ (1)H NMR spectroscopy. The origin of mobility is discussed for cellulose, lignin and xylan. The effect of minerals on cellulose mobility is also investigated. Interactions between polymers in the native biomass network are revealed by in situ (1)H NMR analysis.

Valorisation of forestry waste by pyrolysis in an auger reactor

Pyrolysis of forestry waste has been carried out in an auger reactor to study the influence of operational variables on the reactor performance and the properties of the related products. Pine woodchips were used for the first time as raw material and fed continuously into the reactor. Ten experiments were carried out under inert atmosphere at: (i) different reaction temperature (1073, 973, 873, 823 and 773 K); (ii) different solid residence time (5, 3, 2 and 1.5 min); and (iii) different biomass flow rate (3.9, 4.8 and 6.9 kg/h). Results show that the greatest yields for liquid production (59%) and optimum product characterisation were obtained at the lowest temperature studied (773 K) and applying solid residence times longer than 2 min. Regarding bio-oil properties, GC/MS qualitative identification show that the most abundant compounds are volatile polar compounds, phenols and benzenediols; and very few differences can be observed among the samples regardless of the pyrolysis operating conditions. On the whole, experimental results demonstrate that complete reaction of forest woodchips can be achieved in an auger reactor in most of the experimental conditions tested. Moreover, this study presents the initial steps for the future scaling up of the auger reactor with the aim of converting it into a mobile plant which will be able to remotely process biomass such as energy crops, forestry and agricultural wastes to obtain bio-oil that, in turn, can be used as energy vector to avoid high transport costs.
