Equilibrium and kinetics of copper ions removal from wastewater by ion exchange

Novel high capacity model for copper binary ion exchange on e-waste derived adsorbent resin

Heavy metal water pollution is a global concern in recent years. Copper is a toxic metal at higher concentrations (> 20 μg /g) and needs to be removed using ion exchanger systems. This study investigates the removal efficiencies of copper by the non-metallic fraction (NMF) waste printed circuit boards (PCBs). The high maximum adsorption capacity of copper by the PCB-derived material after activation with KOH was 2.65 mmol/g, and the experimental isotherm was best correlated by the Temkin model. Finally, this study presents a novel dual site adsorption/ion exchange mechanism, wherein the potassium (from the activation) and calcium (present in the structure) served as ion exchange sites for the copper in the solution. Therefore, this recycling study, focusing on cyclic environmental management, converts a major waste material to an activated ion exchange resin (high capacity) for the removal of copper from wastewater solutions and successfully regenerates the resin for re-use while producing an acidic copper solution for recovery by electrolysius or chemical salt precipitation.

Electrodialytic Handling of Radioactive Metal Ions for Preparation of Tracer Reagents

Radioactive metals are applied in biochemistry, medical diagnosis such as positron emission tomography (PET), and cancer therapy. However, the activity of radioisotopes exponentially decreases with time; therefore, rapid and reliable probe preparation methods are strongly recommended. In the present study, electrodialytic radioactive metal ion handling is studied for counter ion conversion and in-line probe synthesis. Presently, counter ion conversion and probe synthesis are achieved by evaporative dryness and solution mixing, respectively. Evaporative dryness is time-consuming and is a possible process that can lead to loss of radioactive metal ions. Mixing of solutions for synthesis makes dilution and undesirable effects of counter ion on the synthesis. An optimized electrodialytic flow device can transfer a radioisotope, ⁶⁴Cu²⁺, with high recovery from HCl matrices to HNO₃ (∼100%). Matrices can also be transferred into acetic acid and citric acid, even though the concentration of the metal ion is at the picomolar level. The ion transfer can also be achieved with simultaneous counter ion conversion, complex synthesis, and enrichment. When the ligand was dissolved in an acceptor solution, the transferred metal ions from the donor were well mixed and formed a complex with the ligand in-line. The efficiency of the synthesis was ∼100% for 1.0 pM ⁶⁴Cu. A relatively larger donor-to-acceptor flow rate can enrich the metal ion in the acceptor solution continuously. The flow rate ratio of 10 (donor/acceptor) can achieve 10 times enrichment. The present electrodialytic ion handling method can treat ultra-trace radioisotopes in a closed system. With this method, rapid, effective, and safe radioisotope treatments were achieved.

Synthesis of sewage sludge-based carbon/TiO2 /ZnO nanocomposite adsorbent for the removal of Ni(II), Cu(II), and chemical oxygen demands from aqueous solutions and industrial wastewater

The removal of heavy metal ions and organic materials from wastewater due to their toxicity is necessary. In the present study, the titanium dioxide/zinc oxide (TiO₂ /ZnO) nanocomposite has been coated on the sewage sludge carbon (SSC) surface and its application was investigated for the adsorption of Ni(II), Cu(II), and chemical oxygen demands (COD) reduction from aqueous solutions and industrial wastewaters in Eshtehard, Iran. The effect of adsorption parameters in a single system such as TiO₂ /ZnO ratio, TiO₂ /ZnO concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, ionic strength, temperature, and initial concentrations of Ni(II), Cu(II), and COD was investigated on the adsorption capacity of synthesized SSC/TiO₂ /ZnO adsorbent. The pseudo-second order and Redlich-Peterson isotherm models were best described the kinetic and equilibrium data of Ni(II), Cu(II), and COD sorption. The maximum monolayer sorption capacities of Ni(II), Cu(II), and COD were found to be 62.3, 75.1, and 1,120.3 mg/g, respectively. The central composite design was used to investigate the interaction effects of pH and initial concentrations of Ni(II), Cu(II), and COD on the simultaneous removal of Ni(II), Cu(II), and COD from aqueous solutions in a ternary system. The potential of synthesized SSC/TiO₂ /ZnO adsorbent was investigated for Ni(II), Cu(II), and COD adsorption from industrial wastewaters of Iran. Recent Advances in Applications of Hybrid Graphene Materials for Metals Removal from Wastewater

The presence of traces of heavy metals in wastewater causes adverse health effects on humans and the ecosystem. Adsorption is a low cost and eco-friendly method for the removal of low concentrations of heavy metals from wastewater streams. Over the past several years, graphene-based materials have been researched as exceptional adsorbents. In this review, the applications of graphene oxide (GO), reduce graphene oxide (rGO), and graphene-based nanocomposites (GNCs) for the removal of various metals are analyzed. Firstly, the common synthesis routes for GO, rGO, and GNCs are discussed. Secondly, the available literature on the adsorption of heavy metals including arsenic, lead, cadmium, nickel, mercury, chromium and copper using graphene-based materials are reviewed and analyzed. The adsorption isotherms, kinetics, capacity, and removal efficiency for each metal on different graphene materials, as well as the effects of the synthesis method and the adsorption process conditions on the recyclability of the graphene materials, are discussed. Finally, future perspectives and trends in the field are also highlighted.

A novel and biocompatible Fe3O4 loaded chitosan polyelectrolyte nanoparticles for the removal of Cd2+ ion

In this work, Fe₃O₄ loaded chitosan (CS) nanoparticles (NPs) and microparticles (MPs) were synthesized based on ionic gelation technology for the removal of Cd²⁺ ion. The influencing parameters including initial concentration, pH, contact time and recycling was evaluated and optimized. The results showed that particle size of Fe₃O₄ loaded CS NPs and MPs was in the range of 164.05-768.69 nm, and the former showed relatively higher adsorption capacities (97.86 mg/g) on Cd²⁺ ion than the latter after 90 min at pH 5.0 for the solutions with initial Cd²⁺ ion of 100 mg/L, respectively. Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) test illustrated 61.48 m²/g of specific surface area, 0.0274 cm³/g of pore volume and 6.03 nm average pore size. The results of FT-IR, TEM, EDS and XRD indicated that Fe₃O₄ was well incorporated into CS NPs and MPs. Moreover, the adsorption equilibrium data fitted well with Langmuir isotherm model and adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption mechanisms could be well explained though coordination and electrostatic attraction. Findings of this work highlighted the potential using Fe₃O₄ loaded CS NPs as an effective and recyclable adsorbent for the removal of heavy metal ions in industrial wastewater treatment.
