Chemical functionalization of chitosan biopolymer and chitosan-magnetite nanocomposite with sulfonic acid for acid-catalyzed reactions

Study on Flame Retardancy of Cotton Fabric Modified by Sulfonic Groups Chelated with Ba2

A simple and innovative method was introduced for the production of green and recoverable flame-retardant cotton fabrics, where sulfonated cotton fabric (COT-SC) was synthesized by oxidizing cotton fabric with sodium periodate, followed by a sulfonation step with sodium bisulfite to provide active sites, which further chelated barium ions (Ba2+) to achieve flame retardancy. The morphological and structural characterizations of the fabricated cotton fabrics (COT-SC-Ba) demonstrated that the cleavage of C2-C3 free hydroxy groups within the cellulose macromolecule was chemically modified for grafting a considerable number of sulfonic acid groups, and Ba2+ ions were effectively immobilized on the macromolecule of the cotton fabric through a chelation effect. Results from cone calorimeter tests (CCTs) revealed that COT-SC-Ba became nonflammable, displayed a delayed ignition time, and decreased the values of the heat release rate (HRR), total smoke release (TSR), effective heat of combustion (EHC), and CO/CO2 ratio. TG/DTG analysis demonstrated that COT-SC-Ba possessed greater thermal stability, fewer flammable volatiles, and more of a char layer during burning than that of the original cotton fabric. Its residual mass was increased from 0.02% to 26.9% in air and from 8.05% to 26.76% in N2, respectively. The COT-SC-Ba not only possessed a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of up to 34.4% but could also undergo vertical burning tests evidenced by results such as the non-afterflame, non-afterglow, and a mere 75 mm char length. Those results demonstrated that the combination of SO3- and Ba2+ promoted the formation of a char layer. Moreover, cotton fabric regained its superior flame retardancy after being washed and re-chelated with Ba2+. Additional characteristics of the cotton fabric, such as the rupture strength, white degree, and hygroscopicity, were maintained at an acceptable level. In conclusion, this research can offer a fresh perspective on the design and development of straightforward, efficient, eco-friendly, and recoverable fire-retardant fabrics.

Functionalized chitosan-inspired (nano)materials containing sulfonic acid groups: Synthesis and application

Nature-inspired chitosan (CS) materials show a high potential for the design/fabrication of sustainable heterogeneous (nano)materials with extraordinary structural/physical features, such as superior biodegradability/biocompatibility, simplicity of chemical modification, environmental safety, high availability, cost-effectiveness, high electrochemical activity, good film-forming ability, and antioxidant, antimicrobial/antibacterial, and anticoagulant activities. Industrialization and growth of industrial wastes or by-products induce an increasing demand for the development of clean, low-cost, and renewable natural systems to minimize or eliminate the utilization of environmentally toxic compounds. The preparation of novel heterogeneous functionalized polysaccharide-inspired bio(nano)materials via chemical modifications of natural CS to improve its physicochemical/biochemical properties has recently become tremendously attractive for many researchers. The most abundantly available and cost-effective functionalized CS-inspired (nano)materials are considerably valuable in terms of the economic aspects of production of (nano)catalysts, (nano)hydrogels, (nano)composite/blend membranes, and thus their commercialization. In this respect, the preparation of functionalized CS-inspired (nano)materials containing -SO3H groups has been represented as a valid alternative to the homogenous unmodified biomaterials for various applications. Sulfonated derivatives of CS-inspired (nano)materials may possess huge surface areas, catalytic activity, adsorption, and biological/biomedical properties. This review article is aimed at the investigation of different methods and potential applications of sulfonated CS-inspired (nano)materials in catalysis, fuel cells, adsorption of ions, membranes, and biological applications.

Magnetic chitosan supported copper particles as a heterogeneous catalyst for benzaldehyde glycol acetal reaction

In this work, a series of magnetic chitosan (CS) supported-metal catalysts were successfully prepared for the acetalization of benzaldehyde (BzH) with ethylene glycol (EG). The structural properties of the catalysts were characterized by TEM, FT-IR, XRD, XPS, TGA-DTG, SEM-EDX and VSM. The results showed that Fe3O4-CS-Cu(20 %) catalyst possessed the best catalytic efficiency in all prepared catalysts due to its suitable acidity and excellent stability when they were utilized in the acetalization reaction to generate benzaldehyde glycol acetal. The response surface methodology based on Box-Behnken design was applied to optimize acetalization reaction conditions with the optimal yield of 96.26 % obtained via 3D surface diagram. The attractive feature of prepared catalysts was easy separation from solutions via an external magnetic field application. This work sheds light on the design of novel chitosan-supported metal catalysts which could be widely applied in acetalization industry.

Chitosan: Sources, Processing and Modification Techniques

Chitosan, a copolymer of glucosamine and N-acetyl glucosamine, is derived from chitin. Chitin is found in cell walls of crustaceans, fungi, insects and in some algae, microorganisms, and some invertebrate animals. Chitosan is emerging as a very important raw material for the synthesis of a wide range of products used for food, medical, pharmaceutical, health care, agriculture, industry, and environmental pollution protection. This review, in line with the focus of this special issue, provides the reader with (1) an overview on different sources of chitin, (2) advances in techniques used to extract chitin and converting it into chitosan, (3) the importance of the inherent characteristics of the chitosan from different sources that makes them suitable for specific applications and, finally, (4) briefly summarizes ways of tailoring chitosan for specific applications. The review also presents the influence of the degree of acetylation (DA) and degree of deacetylation (DDA), molecular weight (M_w) on the physicochemical and biological properties of chitosan, acid-base behavior, biodegradability, solubility, reactivity, among many other properties that determine processability and suitability for specific applications. This is intended to help guide researchers select the right chitosan raw material for their specific applications.
