Abstract
We explored unintentional drifts of finger forces during force production and matching task. Based on earlier studies, we predicted that force matching with the other hand would reduce or stop the force drift in instructed fingers while uninstructed (enslaved) fingers remain unaffected. Twelve young, healthy, right-handed participants performed two types of tasks with both hands (task hand and match hand). The task hand produced constant force at 20% of MVC level with the Index and Ring fingers pressing in parallel on strain gauge force sensors. The Middle finger force wasn't instructed, and its enslaved force was recorded. Visual feedback on the total force by the instructed fingers was either present throughout the trial or only during the first 5 s (no-feedback condition). The other hand matched the perceived force level of the task hand starting at either 4, 8, or 15 s from the trial initiation. No feedback was ever provided for the match hand force. After the visual feedback was removed, the task hand showed a consistent drift to lower magnitudes of total force. Contrary to our prediction, over all conditions, force matching caused a brief acceleration of force drift in the task hand, which then reached a plateau. There was no effect of matching on drifts in enslaved finger force. We interpret the force drifts within the theory of control with spatial referent coordinates as consequences of drifts in the command (referent coordinate) to the antagonist muscles. This command is not adequately incorporated into force perception.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Parkinson's disease (PD) may progressively reduce the upper limb's functionality. Currently, there is no standardized upper limb functional capacity assessment in PD in the rehabilitation field. OBJECTIVE To identify specific outcome measurements to assess upper limbs in PD and access functional capacity. METHODS We systematically reviewed and analyzed the literature in English published from August/2012 to August/2022 according to PRISMA. The following keywords were used in our search: "upper limbs" OR "upper extremity" and "Parkinson's disease." Two researchers searched independently, including studies accordingly to our inclusion and exclusion criteria. Registered at PROSPERO CRD42021254486. RESULTS We found 797 studies, and 50 were included in this review (n = 2.239 participants in H&Y stage 1-4). The most common upper limbs outcome measures found in the studies were: (i) UPDRS-III and MDS-UPDRS to assess the severity and progression of PD motor symptoms (tremor, bradykinesia, and rigidity) (ii) Nine Hole Peg Test and Purdue Pegboard Test to assess manual dexterity; (iii) Spiral test and Funnel test to provoke and assess freezing of upper limbs; (iv) Technology assessment such as wearables sensors, apps, and other device were also found. CONCLUSION We found evidence to support upper limb impairments assessments in PD. However, there is still a large shortage of specific tests to assess the functional capacity of the upper limbs. The upper limbs' functional capacity is insufficiently investigated during the clinical and rehabilitation examination due to a lack of specific outcome measures to assess functionality.

Abstract
We explored the phenomenon of unintentional force drift seen in the absence of visual feedback during knee extension contractions in isometric conditions. Based on the importance of knee extensors for the anti-gravity function, we hypothesized that such force drifts would be slower and smaller compared to those reported for the upper extremities. We also explored possible effects of foot dominance and gender on the force drifts. Young healthy persons produced isometric knee extension contractions to different levels, ranging from 15 to 25% of maximal voluntary contraction force, with the help of visual feedback, and then, the visual feedback was turned off. Force change over the time interval without visual feedback was quantified. In the absence of visual feedback, force drifted to smaller magnitudes. The drift magnitude expressed in percent of the initial force magnitude was smaller for smaller initial force levels, ranging between 8 and 15% of the initial force for the initial force magnitude of 15% and 25% of maximal voluntary contraction force. The time exponent of the force drift was independent of the initial force magnitude and was, on average, 6.45 s. There were no significant effects of foot dominance or gender, although the male subjects tended to show stronger scaling of the drift magnitude with the initial force level compared to the female subjects. The results show that unintentional force drift is a common phenomenon across limbs and muscle groups. This conclusion fits the theory of control with spatial referent coordinates and the general tendency of all natural systems to drift to states with lower potential energy.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of altered visual gain levels on bilateral motor synergies determined by the uncontrolled manifold (UCM) hypothesis and force control. Twelve healthy participants performed bimanual index finger abduction force control tasks at 20% of their maximal voluntary contraction across four different visual gain conditions: 8, 80, 256, and 512 pixels/N. Quantifying force accuracy and variability within a trial provided a bimanual force control outcome. The UCM analysis measured bilateral motor synergies, a proportion of good variance to bad variance across multiple trials. Correlation analyses determined whether changes in the UCM variables were related to changes in force control variables from the lowest to highest visual gain conditions, respectively. Multiple analyses indicated that the three highest visual gain conditions in comparison to the lowest visual gain increased values of bilateral motor synergies and target force accuracy. The correlation findings showed that a reduction of bad variance from the lowest to three highest visual gain conditions was related to increased force accuracy. These findings reveal that visual gain greater than 8 pixels/N facilitates bimanual force control.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Torque steadiness can be impaired in people with Huntington's disease (HD) and worsen with disease advancement. However, existing studies have several methodological oversights. Studies have used absolute torque targets, which do not account for differences in maximal torque capacity between people. Furthermore, despite its known influence on torque steadiness, previous studies in HD have not controlled for visual feedback. This study evaluated torque variability at relative intensities with and without visual feedback between people with prodromal HD and healthy controls. METHODS Twenty-four people with prodromal HD and twenty-seven age- and sex-matched healthy controls were recruited for this study. Torque variability was evaluated, with and without visual feedback, in the right plantar flexors at 10% and 30% of each participant's maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC). Measures of disease burden included the CAG age product, diagnostic confidence level and Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale - Total Motor Score. RESULTS Significant differences in torque variability were observed, though not in overall MVIC, between people with prodromal HD and healthy controls. Significantly higher torque fluctuations were observed for both groups when visual feedback was removed. No associations were observed between torque variability and disease burden in people with prodromal HD. Torque variability measurements showed higher reliability in healthy controls. CONCLUSIONS People with prodromal HD exhibited greater torque variability than healthy controls. Torque variability worsened for both groups when visual feedback was removed. These findings support further investigation into the utilisation of torque variability measurements as markers of disease progression in people with prodromal HD.

Abstract
We explored the phenomenon of unintentional force drifts in the absence of visual feedback. Based on the idea of direct force control with internal models and on the idea of indirect force control with referent coordinates to the involved muscle groups, contrasting predictions were drawn for changes in the drift magnitude when acting against external spring loads. Fifteen young subjects performed typical accurate force production tasks by pressing with the Index finger at 20% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) in isometric conditions and while acting against one of the three external springs with different stiffness. The visual feedback on the force was turned off after 5 s. At the end of each 20-s trial, the subjects relaxed and then tried to reproduce the final force level. The force drifts were significantly smaller in the spring conditions, particularly when acting against more compliant springs. The subjects were unaware of the force drifts and, during force matching, produced forces close to the initial force magnitude, which were not different across the conditions. There was a trend toward larger drifts during performance by the dominant hand. We view these observations as strong arguments in favor of the theory of control with spatial referent coordinates. In particular, force drifts were likely consequences of drifts of referent coordinates to both agonist and antagonist muscles. The lack of drift effects on both perception-to-report and perception-to-act fit the scheme of kinesthetic perception based on the interaction of efferent (referent coordinate) and afferent processes.

Abstract
We present a review on the phenomenon of unintentional finger action seen when other fingers of the hand act intentionally. This phenomenon (enslaving) has been viewed as a consequence of both peripheral (e.g., connective tissue links and multifinger muscles) and neural (e.g., projections of corticospinal pathways) factors. Recent studies have shown relatively large and fast drifts in enslaving toward higher magnitudes, which are not perceived by subjects. These and other results emphasize the defining role of neural factors in enslaving. We analyze enslaving within the framework of the theory of motor control with spatial referent coordinates. This analysis suggests that unintentional finger force changes result from drifts of referent coordinates, possibly reflecting the spread of cortical excitation.

Abstract
We used a finger force matching task to explore the role of efferent signals in force perception. Healthy, young participants performed accurate force production tasks at different force levels with the index and middle fingers of one hand (task-hand). They received visual feedback during an early part of each trial only. After the feedback was turned off, the force drifted toward lower magnitudes. After 5 s of the drift, the participants matched the force with the same finger pair of the other hand (match-hand). The match-hand consistently overshot the task-hand force by a magnitude invariant over the initial force levels. During force matching, both hands were lifted and lowered smoothly to estimate their referent coordinate (RC) and apparent stiffness values. These trials were performed without muscle vibration and under vibration applied to the finger/hand flexors or extensors of the task-hand or match-hand. Effects of vibration were seen in the match-hand only; they were the same during vibration of flexors and extensors. We interpret the vibration-induced effects as consequences of using distorted copies of the central commands to the task-hand during force matching. In particular, using distorted copies of the RC for the antagonist muscle group could account for the differences between the task-hand and match-hand. We conclude that efferent signals may be distorted before their participation in the perceptual process. Such distortions emerge spontaneously and may be amplified by the response of sensory endings to muscle vibration combined over both agonist and antagonist muscle groups.

Abstract
We explored changes in finger forces and in an index of unintentional finger force production (enslaving) under a variety of visual feedback conditions and positional finger perturbations. In particular, we tested a hypothesis that enslaving would show a consistent increase with time at characteristic times of about 1-2 s. Young healthy subjects performed accurate force production tasks under visual feedback on the total force of the instructed fingers (index and ring) or enslaved fingers (middle and little). Finger feedback was covertly alternated between master and enslaved fingers in a random fashion. The feedback could be presented over the first 5 s of the trial only or over the whole trial duration (21 s). After 5 s, the fingers were lifted by 1 cm, and after 15 s, the fingers were lowered to the initial position. The force of the instructed fingers drifted toward lower magnitudes in all conditions except the one with continuous feedback on that force. The force of enslaved fingers showed variable behavior across conditions. In all conditions, the index of enslaving showed a consistent increase with the time constant varying between 1 and 3 s. We interpret the results as pointing at the spread of excitation to enslaved fingers (possibly, in the cortical M1 areas). The relatively fast changes in enslaving under positional finger perturbations suggest that quick changes of the input into M1 from pre-M1 areas can accelerate the hypothesized spread of cortical excitation.

Abstract
When a person tries to press with a finger, other fingers of the hand produce force unintentionally. We explored this phenomenon of enslaving during unintentional force drifts in the course of continuous force production by pairs of fingers of a hand. Healthy subjects performed accurate force production tasks by finger pairs Index-Middle, Middle-Ring, and Ring-Little with continuous visual feedback on the combined force of the instructed (master) fingers or of the noninstructed (enslaved) fingers. The feedback scale was adjusted to ensure that the subjects did not know the difference between these two, randomly presented, conditions. Across all finger pairs, enslaved force showed a drift upward under feedback on the master finger force, and master force showed a drift downward under feedback on the enslaved finger force. The subjects were unaware of the force drifts, which could reach over 50% of the initial force magnitude over 15 s. Across all conditions, the index of enslaving increased by ∼50% over the trial duration. The initial moment of force magnitude in pronation-supination was not a consistent predictor of the force drift magnitude. These results falsify the hypothesis that the counter-directional force drifts reflected drifts in the moment of force. They suggest that during continuous force production, enslaving increases with time, possibly due to the spread of excitation over cortical finger representations or other mechanisms, such as increased synchronization of firing of α-motoneurons innervating different compartments of extrinsic flexors. These changes in enslaving, interpreted at the level of control with referent coordinates for the fingers, can contribute to a variety of phenomena, including unintentional force drifts.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We report a consistent slow increase in finger enslaving (force production by noninstructed fingers) when visual feedback was presented on the force produced by either two instructed fingers or two noninstructed fingers of the hand. In contrast, force drifts could be in opposite directions depending on the visual feedback. We interpret enslaving and its drifts at the level of control with referent coordinates for the involved muscles, possibly reflecting spread of cortical excitation.

Abstract
We tested finger force interdependence and multifinger force-stabilizing synergies in a patient with large-fiber peripheral neuropathy ("deafferented person"). The subject performed a range of tasks involving accurate force production with one finger and with four fingers. In one-finger tasks, nontask fingers showed unintentional force production (enslaving) with an atypical pattern: very large indices for the lateral (index and little) fingers and relatively small indices for the central (middle and ring) fingers. Indices of multifinger synergies stabilizing total force and of anticipatory synergy adjustments in preparation to quick force pulses were similar to those in age-matched control females. During constant force production, removing visual feedback led to a slow force drift to lower values (by ~25% over 15 s). The results support the idea of a neural origin of enslaving and suggest that the patterns observed in the deafferented person were reorganized based on everyday manipulation tasks. The lack of significant changes in the synergy index shows that synergic control can be organized in the absence of somatosensory feedback. We discuss the control of the hand in deafferented persons within the α-model of the equilibrium-point hypothesis and suggest that force drift results from an unintentional drift of the control variables to muscles toward zero values. NEW & NOTEWORTHY We demonstrate atypical patterns of finger enslaving and unchanged force-stabilizing synergies in a person with large-fiber peripheral neuropathy. The results speak strongly in favor of central origin of enslaving and its reorganization based on everyday manipulation tasks. The data show that synergic control can be implemented in the absence of somatosensory feedback. We discuss the control of the hand in deafferented persons within the α-model of the equilibrium-point hypothesis.

Abstract
During trial-to-trial movement adaptation, the motor system systematically reduces extraneous muscle forces when kinematic errors experienced on previous movements are small, a phenomenon termed "slacking." There is also growing evidence that the motor system slacks continuously (i.e., in real-time) during arm movement or grip force control, but the initiation of this slacking is not well-characterized, obfuscating its physiological cause. Here, we addressed this issue by asking participants ( n = 32) to track discrete force targets presented visually using isometric grip force, then applying a brief, subtle error-clamp to that visual feedback on random trials. Participants reduced their force in an exponential fashion, on these error-clamp trials, except when the target force was <10% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). This force drift began <250 ms after the onset of the error-clamp, consistent with slacking being an ongoing process unmasked immediately after the motor system finished reacting to the last veridical feedback. Above 10% MVC, the slacking rate increased linearly with grip force magnitude. Grip force variation was approximately 50-100% higher with veridical feedback, largely due to heightened signal power at ~1 Hz, the band of visuomotor feedback control. Finally, the slacking rate measured for each participant during error-clamp trials correlated with their force variation during control trials. That is, participants who slacked more had greater force variation. These results suggest that real-time slacking continuously reduces grip force until visual error prompts correction. Whereas such slacking is suited for force minimization, it may also account for ~30% of the variability in personal grip force variation. NEW & NOTEWORTHY We provide evidence that a form of slacking continuously conditions real-time grip force production. This slacking is well-suited to promote efficiency but is expected to increase force variation by triggering additional feedback corrections. Moreover, we show that the rate at which a person slacks is substantially correlated with the variation of their grip force. In combination, at the neurophysiological level, our results suggest slacking is caused by one or more relatively smooth neural adaptations.

Abstract
We combined the theory of neural control of movement with referent coordinates and the uncontrolled manifold hypothesis to investigate multifinger coordination. We tested hypotheses related to stabilization of performance by covarying control variables, translated into apparent stiffness and referent coordinate, at different levels of an assumed hierarchy of control. Subjects produced an accurate combination of total force and total moment of force with the four fingers under visual feedback on both variables and after feedback was partly or completely removed. The "inverse piano" device was used to estimate control variables. We observed strong synergies in the space of hypothetical control variables that stabilized total force and moment of force, as well as weaker synergies stabilizing individual finger forces; whereas the former were attenuated by alteration of visual feedback, the latter were much less affected. In addition, we investigated the organization of "ascending synergies" stabilizing task-level control variables by covaried adjustments of finger-level control variables. We observed intertrial covariation of individual fingers' referent coordinates that stabilized hand-level referent coordinate, but we observed no such covariation for apparent stiffness. The observations suggest the existence of both descending and ascending synergies in a hierarchical control system. They confirm a trade-off between synergies at different levels of control and corroborate the hypothesis on specialization of different fingers for the control of force and moment. The results provide strong evidence for the importance of central back-coupling loops in ensuring stability of action. NEW & NOTEWORTHY We expand analysis of action in the space of hypothetical control variables to hierarchically organized multieffector systems. We also introduce the novel concept of ascending synergies, which reflect covariation of control variables to individual effectors (fingers) that stabilize task-specific control variables at a hierarchically higher, task-specific level (hand).

Abstract
We explored changes in the cyclical two-finger force performance task caused by turning visual feedback off performed either by the index and middle fingers of the dominant hand or by two index fingers of two persons. Based on an earlier study, we expected drifts in finger force amplitude and midpoint without a drift in relative phase. The subjects performed two rhythmical tasks at 1 Hz while paced by an auditory metronome. One of the tasks required cyclical changes in total force magnitude without changes in the sharing of the force between the two fingers. The other task required cyclical changes in the force sharing without changing total force magnitude. Subjects were provided with visual feedback, which showed total force magnitude and force sharing via cursor motion along the vertical and horizontal axes, respectively. Further, visual feedback was turned off, first on the variable that was not required to change and then on both variables. Turning visual feedback off led to a mean force drift toward lower magnitudes while force amplitude increased. There was a consistent drift in the relative phase in the one-hand task with the index finger leading the middle finger. No consistent relative phase drift was seen in the two-person tasks. The shape of the force cycle changed without visual feedback reflected in the lower similarity to a perfect cosine shape and in the higher time spent at lower force magnitudes. The data confirm findings of earlier studies regarding force amplitude and midpoint changes, but falsify predictions of an earlier proposed model with respect to the relative phase changes. We discuss factors that could contribute to the observed relative phase drift in the one-hand tasks including the leader-follower pattern generalized for two-effector tasks performed by one person.

Abstract
We explored predictions of a scheme that views position and force perception as a result of measuring proprioceptive signals within a reference frame set by ongoing efferent process. In particular, this hypothesis predicts force illusions caused by muscle vibration and mediated via changes in both afferent and efferent components of kinesthesia. Healthy subjects performed accurate steady force production tasks by pressing with the four fingers of one hand (the task hand) on individual force sensors with and without visual feedback. At various times during the trials, subjects matched the perceived force using the other hand. High-frequency vibration was applied to one or both of the forearms (over the hand and finger extensors). Without visual feedback, subjects showed a drop in the task hand force, which was significantly smaller under the vibration of that forearm. Force production by the matching hand was consistently higher than that of the task hand. Vibrating one of the forearms affected the matching hand in a manner consistent with the perception of higher magnitude of force produced by the vibrated hand. The findings were consistent between the dominant and nondominant hands. The effects of vibration on both force drift and force mismatching suggest that vibration led to shifts in both signals from proprioceptors and the efferent component of perception, the referent coordinate and/or coactivation command. The observations fit the hypothesis on combined perception of kinematic-kinetic variables with little specificity of different groups of peripheral receptors that all contribute to perception of forces and coordinates. NEW & NOTEWORTHY We show that vibration of hand/finger extensors produces consistent errors in finger force perception. Without visual feedback, finger force drifted to lower values without a drift in the matching force produced by the other hand; hand extensor vibration led to smaller finger force drift. The findings fit the scheme with combined perception of kinematic-kinetic variables and suggest that vibration leads to consistent shifts of the referent coordinate and, possibly, of coactivation command to the effector.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The symptoms of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) have been shown to improve when they perform fast-paced rhythmic cycling movements with their lower limbs. OBJECTIVE Our goal in this pilot experiment was to test the feasibility and the benefits of a short exercise program involving fast-paced rhythmic movements of the upper limb for patients with PD. METHODS We used an experimental procedure that elicits large, fast-paced movements by the participants without the direct instructions to do so by the experimenter. Ten participants with PD (71.0±6.5 years old) performed a 50-min fast-paced rhythmic exercise of the upper limb after withdrawal from PD medication for at least 12 hours. RESULTS Participants improved their kinematic performance, in terms of accuracy and combined speed and amplitude (p < 0.02), as well as their upper-limb MDS-UPDRS motor scores (p = 0.023). CONCLUSIONS The results demonstrate the feasibility of using the described apparatus to perform an exercise session of approximately 50 min with both arms, and give a preliminary indication of the potential benefit of such an exercise program.

Abstract
We combined the theory of neural control of movement with referent coordinates and the uncontrolled manifold hypothesis to explore synergies stabilizing the hand action in accurate four-finger pressing tasks. In particular, we tested a hypothesis on two classes of synergies, those among the four fingers and those within a pair of control variables, stabilizing hand action under visual feedback and disappearing without visual feedback. Subjects performed four-finger total force and moment production tasks under visual feedback; the feedback was later partially or completely removed. The "inverse piano" device was used to lift and lower the fingers smoothly at the beginning and at the end of each trial. These data were used to compute pairs of hypothetical control variables. Intertrial analysis of variance within the finger force space was used to quantify multifinger synergies stabilizing both force and moment. A data permutation method was used to quantify synergies among control variables. Under visual feedback, synergies in the spaces of finger forces and hypothetical control variables were found to stabilize total force. Without visual feedback, the subjects showed a force drift to lower magnitudes and a moment drift toward pronation. This was accompanied by disappearance of the four-finger synergies and strong attenuation of the control variable synergies. The indexes of the two types of synergies correlated with each other. The findings are interpreted within the scheme with multiple levels of abundant variables.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We extended the idea of hierarchical control with referent spatial coordinates for the effectors and explored two types of synergies stabilizing multifinger force production tasks. We observed synergies among finger forces and synergies between hypothetical control variables that stabilized performance under visual feedback but failed to stabilize it after visual feedback had been removed. Indexes of two types of synergies correlated with each other. The data suggest the existence of multiple mechanisms stabilizing motor actions.

Abstract
Cyclic isometric finger-force patterns established using visual feedback show systematic drifts when the feedback is removed. Force changes at multiple time scales and in opposite directions have been reported. For further characterization of these drifts, healthy subjects produced isometric, cyclic finger force with and without visual feedback at various initial amplitudes and frequencies. We hypothesized that on feedback removal, the amplitude will be attracted toward a preferred value that is frequency dependent. We found that the amplitude always increased after feedback removal. The magnitude of the amplitude increase changed with initial frequency, but it was invariant over the explored range of initial amplitudes. Thus, the existence of a preferred amplitude of force oscillations was not supported. We interpret these results within the referent configuration and the referent configuration back-coupling hypotheses. These data will inform a mathematical model of finger-force drifts. However, currently, they raise more questions than they answer, and a coherent account of finger-force drifts remains a challenge.

Abstract
Although an essential nutrient, manganese (Mn) can be toxic at high doses. There is, however, uncertainty regarding the effects of chronic low-level Mn-exposure. This review provides an overview of Mn-related brain and functional changes based on studies of a cohort of asymptomatic welders who had lower Mn-exposure than in most previous work. In welders with low-level Mn-exposure, we found: 1) Mn may accumulate in the brain in a non-linear fashion: MRI R1 (1/T1) signals significantly increased only after a critical level of exposure was reached (e.g., ≥300 welding hours in the past 90days prior to MRI). Moreover, R1 may be a more sensitive marker to capture short-term dynamic changes in Mn accumulation than the pallidal index [T1-weighted intensity ratio of the globus pallidus vs. frontal white matter], a traditional marker for Mn accumulation; 2) Chronic Mn-exposure may lead to microstructural changes as indicated by lower diffusion tensor fractional anisotropy values in the basal ganglia (BG), especially when welding years exceeded more than 30 years; 3) Mn-related subtle motor dysfunctions can be captured sensitively by synergy metrics (indices for movement stability), whereas traditional fine motor tasks failed to detect any significant differences; and 4) Iron (Fe) also may play a role in welding-related neurotoxicity, especially at low-level Mn-exposure, evidenced by higher R2* values (an estimate for brain Fe accumulation) in the BG. Moreover, higher R2* values were associated with lower phonemic fluency performance. These findings may guide future studies and the development of occupation- and public health-related polices involving Mn-exposure.

Abstract
We explored unintentional drifts in voluntary whole-body sway tasks following the removal of visual feedback. The main hypothesis was that the unintentional drifts were produced by drifts of referent coordinates for salient performance variables. Young healthy subjects stood quietly on a force platform and also performed voluntary body sway at 0.5 Hz both in the anterio-posterior and medio-lateral directions. Visual feedback on the center of pressure (COP) coordinate was provided and then turned off. During quiet stance trials, the subjects matched the initial COP coordinate with a target shifted by 3 cm anterior, posterior, left, or right from the coordinate during natural standing and activated the right tibialis anterior to 30% of its maximal voluntary contraction. During cyclical voluntary sway task, the nominal sway amplitude was always 4 cm while the midpoint was at one of the four mentioned locations. Removing visual feedback caused COP drifts during quiet stance trials that were consistent across trials performed by a subject but could be in opposite directions across subjects; there was a consistent drop in the activation level of tibialis anterior. During voluntary body sway, removing visual feedback caused a consistent increase in the voluntary sway amplitude and a drift of the midpoint that was consistent within but not across subjects. Motor equivalent and non-motor equivalent inter-cycle motion components were quantified within the space of muscle groups (muscle modes) under visual feedback and at the end of the period without visual feedback. Throughout the trial, there were large motor equivalent motion components, and they increased over the period without visual feedback. The results corroborate the idea that referent coordinate drifts at different levels of the control hierarchy can lead to unintentional drifts in performance. It suggests that directions of COP drifts are defined by two main factors, drift of the body referent coordinate toward the actual coordinate (that can lead to fall) and an opposite drift to ensure body motion to a safer location. Analysis of motor equivalence suggests that postural stability is not compromised during unintentional drifts in performance in contrast to earlier studies of multi-finger tasks. This may be due to the vital importance of postural stability for everyday actions.

Abstract
The study explored unintentional force changes elicited by removing visual feedback during cyclical, two-finger isometric force production tasks. Subjects performed two types of tasks at 1Hz, paced by an auditory metronome. One - Force task - required cyclical changes in total force while maintaining the sharing, defined as relative contribution of a finger to total force. The other task - Share task - required cyclical changes in sharing while keeping total force unchanged. Each trial started under full visual feedback on both force and sharing; subsequently, feedback on the variable that was instructed to stay constant was frozen, and finally feedback on the other variable was also removed. In both tasks, turning off visual feedback on total force elicited a drop in the mid-point of the force cycle and an increase in the peak-to-peak force amplitude. Turning off visual feedback on sharing led to a drift of mean share toward 50:50 across both tasks. Without visual feedback there was consistent deviation of the two force time series from the in-phase pattern (typical of the Force task) and from the out-of-phase pattern (typical of the Share task). This finding is in contrast to most earlier studies that demonstrated only two stable patterns, in-phase and out-of-phase. We interpret the results as consequences of drifts of parameters in a dynamical system leading in particular to drifts in the referent finger coordinates toward their actual coordinates. The relative phase desynchronization is caused by the right-left differences in the hypothesized drift processes, consistent with the dynamic dominance hypothesis.

Abstract
We address the nature of unintentional changes in performance in two papers. This first paper tested a hypothesis that unintentional changes in performance variables during continuous tasks without visual feedback are due to two processes. First, there is a drift of the referent coordinate for the salient performance variable toward the actual coordinate of the effector. Second, there is a drift toward minimum of a cost function. We tested this hypothesis in four-finger isometric pressing tasks that required the accurate production of a combination of total moment and total force with natural and modified finger involvement. Subjects performed accurate force-moment production tasks under visual feedback, and then visual feedback was removed for some or all of the salient variables. Analytical inverse optimization was used to compute a cost function. Without visual feedback, both force and moment drifted slowly toward lower absolute magnitudes. Over 15 s, the force drop could reach 20% of its initial magnitude while moment drop could reach 30% of its initial magnitude. Individual finger forces could show drifts toward both higher and lower forces. The cost function estimated using the analytical inverse optimization reduced its value as a consequence of the drift. We interpret the results within the framework of hierarchical control with referent spatial coordinates for salient variables at each level of the hierarchy combined with synergic control of salient variables. The force drift is discussed as a natural relaxation process toward states with lower potential energy in the physical (physiological) system involved in the task.

Abstract
Manipulating objects with the hands requires the accurate production of resultant forces including shear forces; effective control of these shear forces also requires the production of internal forces normal to the surface of the object(s) being manipulated. In the present study, we investigated multi-finger synergies stabilizing shear and normal components of force, as well as drifts in both components of force, during isometric pressing tasks requiring a specific magnitude of shear force production. We hypothesized that shear and normal forces would evolve similarly in time and also show similar stability properties as assessed by the decomposition of inter-trial variance within the uncontrolled manifold hypothesis. Healthy subjects were required to accurately produce total shear and total normal forces with four fingers of the hand during a steady-state force task (with and without visual feedback) and a self-paced force pulse task. The two force components showed similar time profiles during both shear force pulse production and unintentional drift induced by turning the visual feedback off. Only the explicitly instructed components of force, however, were stabilized with multi-finger synergies. No force-stabilizing synergies and no anticipatory synergy adjustments were seen for the normal force in shear force production trials. These unexpected qualitative differences in the control of the two force components-which are produced by some of the same muscles and show high degree of temporal coupling-are interpreted within the theory of control with referent coordinates for salient variables. These observations suggest the existence of two classes of neural variables: one that translates into shifts of referent coordinates and defines changes in magnitude of salient variables, and the other controlling gains in back-coupling loops that define stability of the salient variables. Only the former are shared between the explicit and implicit task components.

Abstract
We explored the origins of unintentional changes in performance during accurate force production in isometric conditions seen after turning visual feedback off. The idea of control with referent spatial coordinates suggests that these phenomena could result from drifts of the referent coordinate for the effector. Subjects performed accurate force/moment production tasks by pressing with the fingers of a hand on force sensors. Turning the visual feedback off resulted in slow drifts of both total force and total moment to lower magnitudes of these variables; these drifts were more pronounced in the right hand of the right-handed subjects. Drifts in individual finger forces could be in different direction; in particular, fingers that produced moments of force against the required total moment showed an increase in their forces. The force/moment drift was associated with a drop in the index of synergy stabilizing performance under visual feedback. The drifts in directions that changed performance (non-motor equivalent) and in directions that did not (motor equivalent) were of about the same magnitude. The results suggest that control with referent coordinates is associated with drifts of those referent coordinates toward the corresponding actual coordinates of the hand, a reflection of the natural tendency of physical systems to move toward a minimum of potential energy. The interaction between drifts of the hand referent coordinate and referent orientation leads to counterdirectional drifts in individual finger forces. The results also demonstrate that the sensory information used to create multifinger synergies is necessary for their presence over the task duration.

Abstract
We explored unintentional changes in forces during performance of constant and cyclic force-production tasks (F-tasks) after visual feedback removal. Based on earlier studies, we expected all force parameters to drop exponentially with time. We also explored possible role of working memory in the force drop phenomena. Healthy subjects performed constant or cyclic isometric F-tasks with the index finger under visual feedback. The cyclic task was paced by a metronome. Removing visual feedback resulted in a consistent force drop in constant F-tasks and a qualitatively similar drift in the mean force in the cyclic F-task. Both were slow with characteristic times of about 10-20 s. In contrast, force amplitude in the cyclic F-task increased quickly (within 1-2 s). When the subjects were asked to stop producing force for 5 s after the visual feedback disappeared and then resume force production, no downward force drift was seen in constant F-tasks, while in cyclic F-tasks, the drift of the mean force was present and an exaggerated increase in force amplitude was also observed. We conclude that while working memory limitations may influence cyclic F-tasks, their role in determining the force drift in constant F-tasks is limited. The results of both experiments are interpreted within the referent configuration hypothesis supplemented with an idea of unintentional drift of referent coordinates (RC-back-coupling) induced by differences between the referent and actual body configurations.
