Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to assess the factors influencing self-reported taste and smell disturbances in patients with colorectal cancer. METHODS A total of 152 participants were enrolled in the study. All subjects completed surveys that assessed taste and smell alterations using the Taste and Smell Survey (TSS), linear analog self-assessment (LASA), Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The TSS gathered data on the nature of taste and smell changes and their impact on quality of life. LASA was employed to evaluate the quality of life in cancer patients, while PG-SGA was used to indicate the nutritional status of the participants. PSQI was used to evaluate sleep quality. RESULTS Among the 152 colorectal cancer patients, the total TSS score was 5.68 ± 2.84. No changes were observed in 5 cases (3.3%), mild changes in 58 cases (38.2%), and moderate to severe changes in 89 cases (58.6%). The severity of taste and smell disturbances increased with tumor stage, the cycle of chemotherapy, deteriorating sleep quality, and poor nutritional status, displaying significant correlations. Additionally, 83 patients (54.6%) complained of taste abnormalities, while 81 (53.3%) reported smell abnormalities. CONCLUSION Taste and smell disturbances are prominent in colorectal cancer patients. Taste abnormalities are significantly correlated with tumor stage, the cycle of chemotherapy, sleep quality, and nutritional status. Recognizing the high prevalence of taste and smell abnormalities and the influencing factors among patients with colorectal cancer may aid in predicting and understanding the severity of these symptoms more effectively.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chemosensory changes that occur during chemotherapy can significantly impact food enjoyment, quality of life and recovery. AIM To investigate chemosensory changes reported by oncology patients during chemotherapy. METHODS A mixed-method cross-sectional study design was used to explore 100 cancer patients' experiences of chemosensory changes during chemotherapy. All patients completed a questionnaire assessing their taste and smell preferences. A purposive sample of 30 patients underwent a semi-structured interview to elicit their thoughts on their experienced chemosensory changes. Descriptive statistics and themes were examined. FINDINGS The mean age of the sample was 50.56 years, and the majority of participants were female. The most stated taste alteration was bitter, while altered food preferences were also commonly experienced. Furthermore, most patients experienced unpleasant odours around food, while some experienced these odours even when food was not present. Overall, five themes were identified: changes in taste, changes in smell, changes in social life, altered comfort and food preferences. CONCLUSION Chemosensory changes related to cancer and its treatment impact a person's nutrient intake, food-related behaviours, quality of life and treatment response. Patients who experience chemotherapy-associated chemosensory changes require specialised nutritional therapy to increase their eating-related pleasure. As part of the nutritional assessment, chemosensory alterations should be evaluated regularly.

Abstract
Smell and taste changes are bothersome treatment symptoms interfering with food intake. It remains unclear how and when children with cancer experience such changes during chemotherapy, and if the symptoms resolve after treatment. In this longitudinal study, we measured smell and taste function of 94 childhood cancer patients treated for hematological, solid, or brain malignancies. Smell and taste function were assessed using commercial Sniffin' Sticks and Taste Strips, respectively. For both tests, normative values were used to identify the presence of smell and taste abnormalities. Self-reported chemosensory and appetite changes were assessed using a questionnaire. Measurements were taken approximately 6 weeks (T0), 3 months (T1), 6 months after starting chemotherapy (T2), and 3 months after termination of chemotherapy or maintenance phase for children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) (T3). We found that smell and taste scores did not change during active treatment (T0-2). However, approximately 20% of the patients suffered from decreased taste function according to normative values, particularly children with lymphoma or solid tumors. Changes in smell were predominantly characterized as increased rather than decreased. Self-reported changes were much more common than objectively measured, with smell changes ranging from 26 to 53% and taste changes up to 80% during treatment. After active treatment, odor threshold scores decreased in children with ALL during maintenance phase, whereas total taste scores increased in all children at T3. In summary, objectively measured smell and taste function remained stable during active treatment, while at the individual level a fairly large number of children suffered from chemosensory distortions which comprised either increased or decreased sensitivity. Individual dietary advice and coping strategies are warranted to prevent detrimental effects on food intake in children with cancer.

Abstract
Consuming 'nutritionally-enhanced' food products (including those that are fortified or enriched to deliver nutritional and functional properties) may help to improve overall diet quality and combat risks associated with malnutrition. However, fortification can negatively impact consumer acceptance, particularly where expected sensory properties of 'delivery' foods are affected by target ingredients. Here, we explored factors influencing consumer acceptability for six novel food products that had been fortified, including both savoury and sweet meal components (e.g., high protein dumplings, probiotic yoghurt drink). In person focus groups (25 consumers aged between 22 and 76 years old) were conducted with two stages; firstly, participants completed a blind taste test of products without awareness of fortification. Secondly, participants discussed products with awareness of additional ingredients and food properties. Reflexive thematic analysis showed that liking of sensory properties differed between foods, but informing participants about the fortification of products highlighted potential trade-offs between taste, health, price, and familiarity. Though taste and texture were generally prioritised by participants, positive perceptions of health benefits increased consumer willingness to buy, whilst both cost and uncertainty about product use were potential barriers. Trust of information was a key concern for labelling and product claims. These results highlight product features that may be optimised to support the success of fortified foods. Greater transparency when building product brands and improving consumer knowledge of fortification may also be important for longer-term consumer acceptance.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the incidence of complications and types of chemoradiotherepy induces symptom clusters in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) who were first diagnosed after treatment and discharged from hospital. Methods After their discharge home, 130 NPC patients who had been treated with chemoradiotherapy were asked to complete a modified Chinese version of the Quality of Life Questionnaire-Head and Neck Module developed by the European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer in the Head and Neck. Symptom clusters in patients were identified through exploratory factor analysis. Results The most serious symptoms for discharged NPC patients who had received chemoradiotherapy were dental problems, a sense of obstruction while swallowing, embarrassment in physical contact with family members and friends, difficulty in speaking with others, and embarrassment in public. The six symptom clusters identified through exploratory factor analysis were (1) painful eating, (2) social difficulties, (3) psychological disorders, (4) symptomatic shame, (5) teeth/throat injuries, and (6) sensory abnormalities. The total contribution rate of variance was 65.73%. Conclusion NPC patients who are treated with chemoradiotherapy can experience adverse symptom clusters that continue after discharge. Nurses should evaluate the patients' symptoms before discharge and provide targeted health education services which would reduce the patients' complications and improve the quality of life at home. Besides, medical staff should evaluate the complications in a timely and comprehensive manner and provide individualized health education for the affected patients to help them manage chemoradiotherapy side effects.

Abstract
PURPOSE The overarching goal of the FOCUS (biomarkers related to folate-dependent one-carbon metabolism in colorectal cancer (CRC) recurrence and survival) Consortium is to unravel the effect of folate and folate-mediated one-carbon metabolism (FOCM) biomarkers on CRC prognosis to provide clinically relevant advice on folate intake to cancer patients and define future tertiary prevention strategies. PARTICIPANTS The FOCUS Consortium is an international, prospective cohort of 2401 women and men above 18 years of age who were diagnosed with a primary invasive non-metastatic (stages I-III) CRC. The consortium comprises patients from Austria, two sites from the Netherlands, Germany and two sites from the USA. Patients are recruited after CRC diagnosis and followed at 6 and 12 months after enrolment. At each time point, sociodemographic data, data on health behaviour and clinical data are collected, blood samples are drawn. FINDINGS TO DATE An increased risk of cancer recurrences was observed among patients with higher compared with lower circulating folic acid concentrations. Furthermore, specific folate species within the FOCM pathway were associated with both inflammation and angiogenesis pathways among patients with CRC. In addition, higher vitamin B6 status was associated with better quality of life at 6 months post-treatment. FUTURE PLANS Better insights into the research on associations between folate and FOCM biomarkers and clinical outcomes in patients with CRC will facilitate the development of guidelines regarding folate intake in order to provide clinically relevant advice to patients with cancer, health professionals involved in patient care, and ultimately further tertiary prevention strategies in the future. The FOCUS Consortium offers an excellent infrastructure for short-term and long-term research projects and for combining additional biomarkers and data resulting from the individual cohorts within the next years, for example, microbiome data, omics and multiomics data or CT-quantified body composition data.
