Abstract
BACKGROUND Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive and fatal neurodegenerative disorder that significantly impacts individuals and families. Previous research on ALS has predominantly focused on its pathophysiology, genetic factors, and potential therapeutic interventions. While these aspects are essential for understanding and treating the disease, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of studying patients' actual needs. Understanding these needs is vital for developing patient-centered care models that can enhance the well-being of ALS patients. However, existing studies on patients' needs are often limited in scope. Many are conducted in Western countries, and the results may not be directly applicable to patients in other cultural and socioeconomic contexts. China, with its large population and diverse cultural, economic, and healthcare landscapes, presents a unique setting for studying ALS patients' needs. At the same time, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practices are deeply ingrained in their healthcare system and may affect the way people with ALS seek treatment and manage their condition. Therefore, these differences may lead to differences in the actual needs of ALS patients in China. In conclusion, this qualitative study on the actual needs of ALS patients in China aims to bridge the gap in the existing research. By exploring these needs, it can provide valuable insights for healthcare providers, policymakers, and researchers, ultimately contributing to the improvement of care and quality of life for ALS patients in China. METHOD We carried out a qualitative study using an empirical phenomenological approach. Individual in-depth interviews were performed among 22 people with ALS from the motor neuron disease rehabilitation center of a tertiary Chinese medicine hospital in China, and the interview content was analyzed qualitatively. Interview recordings were converted to text content by NVivo 11.0 software and analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological method. RESULT Three main themes were identified in this study: (1) Demand for healthcare services, (2) Emotional requirements, (3) Functional requirements. In addition, 8 sub-themes were extracted as the actual needs of ALS patients. CONCLUSION This study is based on the real experience of ALS patients after diagnosis, and a deep understanding of these experiences can explore the actual needs of patients from many aspects and give reasonable advice and help. Given the particularity of the disease and the uncertainty of treatment, patients will have practical needs for relevant medical support, emotional requirements, physical functions, and other aspects during the period of illness, and the corresponding support is an effective measure to reduce the burden on patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We aimed to determine the predictors of maximum bite force (MBF), as measured with the Innobyte system, and to assess the reliability and reference values for MBF in young adults with natural dentitions. METHODS This cross-sectional test-retest study included 101 dental students with natural dentitions. Participants had their dental occlusion examined and completed three questionnaires: the Temporomandibular disorders Pain Screener, Oral Behavior Checklist, and Jaw Functional Limitation Scale. Body mass index and muscle mass percentage were determined, and handgrip strength was measured with a dynamometer. The MBF was measured with Innobyte, with reliability assessed by the intraclass correlation coefficient, expressing reference values as MBF percentiles. Bivariate tests and multiple linear regression models were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS The intraclass correlation coefficient for the MBF was 0.90, with 10th to 90th percentiles of 487-876 N for females and 529-1003 N for males. A positive relationship existed between the MBF and male sex, muscle mass percentage, overbite, handgrip strength, and possible sleep/awake bruxism. Stepwise regression showed that overbite, handgrip strength, and possible sleep/awake bruxism had the greatest effect on the MBF, explaining 27% of the variation. CONCLUSIONS This study provides reference values for MBF when using the Innobyte system and shows excellent reliability. Overbite, general strength, and self-reported bruxism appear to be important predictors of MBF. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Innobyte is a reliable device that can be used to measure MBF bilaterally. Self-reported bruxism is associated with an 8%-10% increase in MBF.

Abstract
Phase angle (PhA) and bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) have emerged as valuable tools for assessing nutritional status and prognosis in various patient populations, but there is a lack of studies in rare neurodegenerative diseases. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to investigate these bioelectrical parameters in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), compared with healthy peers. The tetrapolar impedance method was applied and bioimpedance analysis (BIA) was performed. Bioelectrical parameters were obtained (Resistance—R; Reactance—Xc) or calculated (PhA; BIVA). For BIVA, bivariate vectors and confidence ellipses were graphically represented. In addition, R and Xc were used to determine body composition (BC) (Fat Mass—FM; Fat-Free Mass—FFM; and Total Body Water—TBW). In this study, 40 participants were divided into two groups: case group (n = 20, ALS patients) and control group (n = 20, healthy subjects. Our main results showed that ALS patients presented low levels of BMI, FFM, R, and Xc adjusted by height (R/H, Xc/H), hydration, and cellularity, compared to the healthy subjects. Our findings highlight BC and bioelectrical parameters, including PhA and BIVA, as valuable indicators of nutrition status, which should be implemented in the nutrition care process of ALS patients during the disease course.

Abstract
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease, characterized in its typical presentation by a combination of lower and upper motor neuron symptoms, with a progressive course and fatal outcome. Due to increased recognition of the non-motor symptoms, it is currently considered a multisystem disorder with great heterogeneity, regarding genetical, clinical, and neuropathological features. Often underestimated, autonomic signs and symptoms have been described in patients with ALS, and various method analyses have been used to assess autonomic nervous system involvement. The aim of this paper is to offer a narrative literature review on autonomic disturbances in ALS, based on the scarce data available to date.

Abstract
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the estimated number of older adults is around 962 million and is projected to increase to 2.1 billion by 2050. The oral frailty concept is associated with gradual oral function loss in relation to aging. There is a need to emphasize the improvement of oral function based on an evaluation of masticatory performance in patients with various oral conditions or systemic diseases and especially in the frail elderly. The present narrative review presents an overview of the current state of the assessment and improvement of masticatory performance in frail older people. To fully encompass oral frailty, oro-facial hypofunction, or oro-facial fitness, dental Patient Reported Outcomes (dPROs) should be included; nevertheless, there are limited evidence-based rehabilitation approaches. The concept of oral frailty, oro-facial hypofunction, or oro-facial fitness should involve dental Patient Reported Outcomes (dPROs), and in this sense, there are only a few evidence-based rehabilitation procedures to improve oro-facial hypofunction besides prosthodontics. It must be considered that reduced neuroplastic capacity in old individuals might preclude a positive outcome of these strategies that might need to be accompanied by functional training and nutritional counseling.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The possibility of having methods to assess dysphagia in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients in a minimally invasive manner could facilitate follow-up and allow performing of therapeutic interventions at earlier stages of the disease. The aim of the study was to analyze the role of tongue strength and thickness in ALS patients and their correlation with dysphagia and bulbar function. METHODS A sample of outpatients with ALS was evaluated for demographic and clinical features. Tongue thickness and strength have been measured for each patient, and quantitative and qualitative data of the videofluoroscopy swallow study have been analyzed. RESULTS Of the 38 ALS patients studied, 47.4% were women, and 26.3% had bulbar onset. The median time between symptom onset and the study was 24 months (IQR 11.5-48), and 55.3% of the patients were carriers of non-invasive mechanical ventilation. Tongue strength identified patients with impaired oral and pharyngeal transit and those with bolus residue scale (BRS) > 1 or penetration-aspiration scale (PAS) ≥ 3. In contrast, tongue thickness is only associated with impaired oral transit. Finally, anterior tongue strength ≤ 34 kPa and posterior tongue strength ≤ 34.5 kPa detected ALS penetrators/aspirators (PAS ≥ 3) and patients with ALS with post-swallow residue (BRS > 1). CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that measures that assess the functionality (strength) of the tongue are more valuable than morphological measurements (thickness) for the follow-up of patients with ALS. Alterations of the anterior and posterior lingual strength correlate with the presence of bronchoaspiration and post-swallowing residue (BRS > 1).

Abstract
This study aims to observe the nutritional status of Chinese patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), further investigating its effect on disease progression. One hundred consecutive newly diagnosed ALS patients and fifty controls were included. Weight and body composition were measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis at baseline and follow-ups. The revised ALS functional rating scale (ALSFRS-R) was used to calculate the rate of disease progression. Patients with ALS had a significantly lower BMI than controls, while no significant difference was found in body composition. Weight loss occurred in 66 (66%) and 52 (67.5%) patients at diagnosis and follow-up, respectively. Patients with significant weight loss (≥ 5%) at diagnosis had significantly lower BMI, fat mass (FM), and FM in limbs and trunk than those without. Fat-free mass (FFM), FM, and FM in limbs were significantly decreased along with weight loss at follow-up (p < 0.01). Patients with lower visceral fat index, lower proportion of FM, and higher proportion of muscle mass at baseline progressed rapidly during follow-ups (p < 0.05). Multivariate linear regression showed that FFM and weight at follow-up were independently correlated with disease progression rate at follow-up (p < 0.05). Weight loss is a common feature in ALS patients, along with muscle and fat wasting during the disease course. Body composition may serve as a prognostic factor and provide guidance for nutritional management in ALS patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To give an overview of the current evidence on the associations of general health conditions with masticatory performance and maximum bite force in older adults. DATA/SOURCES Three electronic databases (Medline via PubMed, Embase via Ovid and CINAHL Plus via EBSCOhost) were searched up to September 2021 for cross-sectional studies on general health conditions and masticatory performance or maximum bite force in older adults. Methodological quality of the included studies was independently evaluated based on Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal checklist for analytical cross-sectional studies. Data on the associations between general health conditions and masticatory performance or maximum bite force were extracted. STUDY SELECTION Of the 5133 records identified, 39 studies (43 articles) were included in this review. Significant negative associations were found between masticatory performance and stroke, sarcopenia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, dyspepsia, dysphagia, anorexia, and carotid atherosclerosis. Significant negative association was found between maximum bite force and sarcopenia. There were equivocal results on the association between masticatory performance and diabetes mellitus, and between maximum bite force and stroke, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. There was no significant association between masticatory performance and metabolic syndrome, and between maximum bite force and progress of Parkinson's disease. Most studies revealed positive associations of physical function with masticatory performance and maximum bite force. CONCLUSIONS Negative associations between masticatory function of older adults and presence of several systemic diseases have been reported in a number of studies while there are positive associations between masticatory function and some physical function indicators. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE This study provides valuable information on the association of masticatory function with general health, which draws clinicians' attention to the masticatory function of older adults who suffer from certain systemic diseases or physical dysfunction, and to the need to improve their masticatory ability to achieve healthy aging.

Abstract
The individual inclination to lead an autonomous life until death is associated with requirements that may be of physiological, psychosocial and environmental nature. We aim to describe a conceptual oro-facial health model with an emphasis on oro-facial function, taking the domains of quality of life and patient-centred values into account. In the context of oro-facial function, the requirements of life are met when the oro-facial system is in a fit state. 'Fitness of the oro-facial system, that is oro-facial health, is a state that is characterised by an absence of, or positive coping with physical disease, mental disease, pain and negative environmental and social factors. It will allow natural oro-facial functions such as sensing, tasting, touching, biting, chewing, swallowing, speaking, yawning, kissing and facial expression'. In the presented conceptual model of oro-facial health, it is postulated that each individual has present and future potentials related to biological prerequisites and resources that are developed by an individual through the course of life. These potentials form the oro-facial functional capacity. When the individual potentials together do not meet the requirements of life anymore, dysfunction and disease result. The oro-facial system is subject to physiological ageing processes, which will inevitably lead to a decrease in the oro-facial functional capacity. Furthermore, comorbid medical conditions might hamper oro-facial function and, alongside with the ageing process, may lead to a state of oral hypofunction. Currently, there is a lack of widespread, validated, easy-to-use instruments that help to distinguish between states of oro-facial fitness as opposed to oral hypofunction. Clearly, research is needed to establish adequate, validated instruments alongside with functional rehabilitation procedures.
