Does objectively measured light-intensity physical activity reduce the risk of cardiovascular mortality? A meta-analysis

AIMS

Current physical activity guidelines emphasize little on light-intensity physical activity (LPA) in terms of reducing the risk of cardiovascular mortality. This meta-analysis aimed to bridge this gap by assessing their association using objectively measured LPA data.

METHODS AND RESULTS

Databases of PubMed and Scopus were searched to April 2020 for prospective cohort studies that reported the association of LPA assessed by activity monitors with the risk of cardiovascular mortality in the general population. Multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled using a random-effects model. Dose-response and subgroup analyses were also performed. Six cohort studies with seven datasets enrolling 13 960 participants were included. LPA was all measured by accelerometers. The HR of LPA per 30 min/day for cardiovascular mortality was pooled to be 0.80 (95% CI 0.67-0.96). This association was non-linearly shaped (Pnonlinearity < 0.01) and unaffected by sex difference. Moreover, substituting LPA for sedentary time of 30 min/day lowered the risk of cardiovascular mortality by 16% (95% CI 0.73-0.96). Results showed further that LPA was inferior to moderate-to-vigorous physical activity in reducing the risk of cardiovascular mortality when performed with an equal time-length set at 30 min/day (HR 0.83 vs. 0.54, Pcomparison = 0.046), but became comparable if at an equal activity-amount set at 150 metabolic equivalents-min/day (HR 0.67 vs. 0.54, Pcomparison = 0.41).

CONCLUSION

LPA shows potential in reducing the risk of cardiovascular mortality, and interventions targeting at LPA improvement are worth being encouraged.

Relationship between the presence of insomnia and walking physical activity and diet quality: A cross-sectional study in a sample of Spanish adults

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES

Certain lifestyle habits may influence aspects of sleep quality, such as insomnia. The main objective of the present study was to analyze the relationship of the presence of insomnia, with walking physical activity and diet quality in an adult population.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

A cross-sectional descriptive study was performed (subanalysis of the TRIPLE A study) between January of 2014 to June of 2015. A total of 454 subjects were selected by consecutive sampling. Insomnia was evaluated with the Atenas scale, diet quality using the diet quality index (DQI) questionnaire, and physical activity using pedometers for seven days, evaluating the total number of steps, aerobic steps, and energy expended.

RESULTS

Of all patients, 26.8% presented with insomnia (33.8% in women and 17.5% in men). In a adjusted model, the mean differences of total steps/day, aerobic steps/day, and kilocalories/day spent in performing physical activity, between no insomnia group and insomnia group were: 1022.5 (95% CI: 177.9-1867.0), 743.9 (95% CI: 68.3-1419.4) and 39.8 (95% CI: 5.7-73.9), respectively. We did not find an association between the diet quality index (DQI) and insomnia.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings suggest that completing daily a greater total number of steps, aerobic steps, and energy expended by walking, could be correlated with less insomnia, independent of age, sex, and other confounding variables. However, no relationship was observed between diet quality and insomnia.

Increasing physical activity through an Internet-based motivational intervention supported by pedometers in a sample of sedentary students: A randomised controlled trial

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to analyse the effect of an Internet-based motivational intervention (IMI) supported by pedometers (in comparison with IMI alone and non-intervention) on increasing daily steps and changing constructs related to physical activity (PA) in a sample of sedentary students.

DESIGN

A randomised-controlled trial was conducted with 76 sedentary or low-active college students. The purpose of the IMI was to deliver information to increase motivation and set individualised PA goals. It involved a 3-week intervention and a 3-months follow-up.

OUTCOME MEASURES

Objective measures were used to measure daily steps, and self-report questionnaires to assess different constructs related to PA.

RESULTS

Results revealed that IMI supported by pedometers condition increased significantly more the daily steps (post-intervention: M = 2069; SD = 1827; follow-up: M = 2227; SD = 2477) and enjoyment than non-intervention condition at both points in time. Moreover, results showed that IMI alone condition increased more the scores in variables involved in PA behaviour than non-intervention condition.

CONCLUSIONS

This study shows the effectiveness of a self-administered IMI using pedometers in increasing PA and enjoyment, and the effectiveness of the IMI alone in changing different theoretical constructs related to the PA behaviour.
