When Good Intention Goes Away: Social Feedback Modulates the Influence of Outcome Valence on Temporal Binding

The retrospective view of temporal binding (TB), the temporal contraction between one's actions and their effects, proposes that TB is influenced by what happens after the action. However, the role of the interaction between multiple sources of information following the action in the formation of TB has received limited attention. The current study aims to address this gap by investigating the combined influence of social feedback and outcome valence (i.e., positive or negative outcomes) on TB. In Experiment 1, the valenced outcome was followed by either positive or negative social feedback. The results showed that negative social feedback enlarged the difference between TB over negative and positive outcomes relative to positive social feedback. The modulatory effect of social feedback on TB was not observed in the absence of causal beliefs between actions and outcomes (Experiment 2). These results highlight the importance of considering the complex interplay between cognitive, emotional, and social factors in shaping our subjective temporal experience.

Hand dominance in the performance and perceptions of virtual reach control

PURPOSE

Efforts to optimize human-computer interactions are becoming increasingly prevalent, especially with virtual reality (VR) rehabilitation paradigms that utilize engaging interfaces. We hypothesized that motor and perceptional behaviors within a virtual environment are modulated uniquely through different modes of control of a hand avatar depending on limb dominance. This study investigated the effects of limb dominance on performance and concurrent changes in perceptions, such as time-based measures for intentional binding, during virtual reach-to-grasp.

METHODS

Participants (n = 16, healthy) controlled a virtual hand through their own hand motions with control adaptations in speed, noise, and automation.

RESULTS

A significant (p < 0.01) positive relationship between performance (reaching pathlength) and binding (time-interval estimation of beep-sound after grasp contact) was observed for the dominant hand. Unique changes in performance (p < 0.0001) and binding (p < 0.0001) were observed depending on handedness and which control mode was applied.

CONCLUSIONS

Developers of VR paradigms should consider limb dominance to optimize settings that facilitate better performance and perceptional engagement. Adapting VR rehabilitation for handedness may particularly benefit unilateral impairments, like hemiparesis or single-limb amputation.

Sense of Agency in Multi-Step Actions

In our daily lives, we frequently execute actions that require several steps to bring about the outcome. However, investigations on how the sense of agency—the sense of controlling our actions and their outcomes—evolves in multi-step actions are still lacking. The purpose of the present research is to fill this gap. In the present study, the participants executed one-step, two-step, and three-step actions in which one, two, or three keys had to be pressed consecutively to generate a tone. We used sensory attenuation as an implicit measure of the sense of agency. Sensory attenuation means that self-produced sensory effects are perceived as less intense than externally generated effects. In the present experiment, sensory attenuation was measured in a psychophysical paradigm and increased in multi-step actions compared to the one-step action. We also asked the participants to explicitly rate the amount to which they felt that they had generated the tone. Ratings were highest in the one-step condition and dropped for multi-step actions, thus showing the opposite pattern of the sensory attenuation data. We assume that enhanced sensory attenuation in multi-step actions could be due to increased effort or more accurate sensorimotor predictions of action effects. The decrease in explicit ratings for multi-step actions might be attributed to reduced perception of causality.

Egocentric Temporal Order Bias Robust Across Manipulations of Cue Predictability and Sensory Modality

The Egocentric Temporal Order (ETO) bias is the finding that self-initiated action-events are perceived as having occurred prior to simultaneous externally triggered events. Here, we test if the ETO bias is affected by predictability of the stimulus cue used to initiate a self-action or by the sensory modality of that cue. Without separating out the potential influence of the stimulus cue on the ETO bias, further investigations into the mechanisms underlying the bias are difficult to interpret. Our findings robustly confirm and replicate the ETO bias, providing evidence that the bias is not an artifact of the experimental design, but rather indicates a true temporal bias in the perception of self-initiated action-events.

Compress global, dilate local: Intentional binding in action-outcome alternations

Intentional binding refers to subjective temporal attraction between an action and its outcome. However, the nature of intentional binding in multiple actions remains unclear. We examined intentional binding in alternated action-outcome dyads. Participants actively or passively pressed a key, followed by a tone, and they again pressed the key; resulting in four keypress-tone dyads in a trial. Participants reproduced the duration of alternated keypress-tone dyads or the temporal interval between a dyad embedded in the alternations. The reproduced duration was shorter in the active than in the passive condition, suggesting the intentional binding in action-outcome alternations. In contrast, the reproduced interval between a dyad was longer in the active condition and did not correlate with the reproduced duration. These results suggest that subjective time during actions relies not only on an internal clock but also on postdictive biases that are switched based on what we recall.

Investigating the perceived timing of sensory events triggering actions in patients with Parkinson's disease and the effects of dopaminergic therapy

Few studies have investigated if Parkinson's disease (PD), advancing age, or exogenous dopamine therapy affect the perceived timing of past events. Here we show a phenomenon of 'temporal repulsion' of a sensory event relative to an action decision in patients with PD. In these patients, the timing of a sensory event triggering an action was perceived to have occurred earlier in time than it really did. In other words, the event appeared to be pushed away in time from the performance of the action. This finding stands in sharp contrast to the 'temporal binding' we have observed here and elsewhere (Yabe et al., 2017; Yabe & Goodale, 2015) in young healthy participants for whom the perceived onset of a sensory event triggering an action is typically delayed, as if it were pulled towards the action in time. In elderly patients, sensory events were neither repulsed nor pulled toward the action decision event. Exogenous dopamine alleviated the temporal repulsion in PD patients and normalized the temporal binding in healthy elderly controls. In contrast, dopaminergic therapy worsened temporal binding in healthy young participants. We discuss this pattern of findings, relating temporal binding processes to dopaminergic and striatal mechanisms.

Robust intentional binding for causally-linked sequences of naturalistic events but not for abstract event sequences

Past studies have shown that when a voluntary action produces a sensory effect, the action and the effect will be perceived as being closer in time. This subjective temporal 'attraction' is known as intentional binding (IB). Induction of IB is dependent on the intentionality of one's actions, the predictability of the effect, and the causality between the action and the effect. Previous investigations of IB have utilized abstract stimuli (e.g., flashes and beeps) with adaptation so as to associate the abstract action-effect link. Yet, events from our everyday experiences already have an inherent action-effect link. We, thus, investigated, for the first time, IB under naturalistic, multisensory stimulation by manipulating the intentionality, predictability, and causal event link. A total of five experiments without adaptation were conducted examining IB with: abstract stimuli (Experiment 1), naturalistic effects (Exp. 2), naturalistic action cue and effect matching (Exp. 3), naturalistic action cue and effect mismatching (Exp. 4), and naturalistic action cue and effect matching but mismatched response mapping (Exp. 5). Analyses of the data showed the absence of IB for abstract stimuli without action-effect adaptation (Exp. 1) and for effects that were not inherently causal or predictable of one's action (Exp. 2, 4, and 5). IB, however, was induced when the naturalistic sequence of action cue-effect was casually linked and predictable in terms of timing (Exp. 3). Overall, our results showed that induction of IB is dependent on the inherent causal and predictable association of an event from the cue to act to the consequence of that action, an association that is already present in everyday multisensory events.
