Abstract
Ethyl(hydroxyethyl)cellulose (EHEC) and a silica-based xerogel (SBX) were functionalized with a (18-crown-6)-styrylpyridine precursor (1) to obtain the modified polymers EHEC-1 and SBX-1, respectively. Films were obtained and the resulting materials were used as fluorogenic devices for the detection of Hg2+ in water. The films produced from EHEC-1 showed high water retention, making it difficult to apply as a reusable optical chemosensor. Since SBXs are recognized in the literature for their hydrophobicity, a hybrid film composed of EHEC and SBX-1 which did not show water retention was produced and characterized. This system showed rapid response time, outstanding selectivity compared to several other studied metal ions, and sensitivity for the detection of Hg2+ in water. The detection limit for this material using fluorescence technique was 2 ppb (∼10-8 mol L-1). The reversibility of the complex formed between EHEC-SBX-1 film and Hg2+ was demonstrated by the addition of cysteine to the medium. The result obtained also allowed the assembly of INHIBIT and IMPLICATION molecular logic gates, using Hg2+ and cysteine as inputs. The results described in this article have important significance in the development of novel reversible fluorogenic chemosensors and adsorbent materials for the effective removal of Hg2+ ions.

Abstract
Emulsion electrospinning is a method of modifying a fibers’ surface and functional properties by encapsulation of the bioactive molecules. In our studies, bovine serum albumin (BSA) played the role of the modifier, and to protect the protein during the electrospinning process, the W/O (water-in-oil) emulsions were prepared, consisting of polymer and micelles formed from BSA and anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate–S) or nonionic (Tween 80–T) surfactant. It was found that the micelle size distribution was strongly dependent on the nature and the amount of the surfactant, indicating that a higher concentration of the surfactant results in a higher tendency to form smaller micelles (4–9 µm for S and 8–13 µm for T). The appearance of anionic surfactant micelles reduced the diameter of the fiber (100–700 nm) and the wettability of the nonwoven surface (up to 77°) compared to un-modified PCL polymer fibers (100–900 nm and 130°). The use of a non-ionic surfactant resulted in better loading efficiency of micelles with albumin (about 90%), lower wettability of the nonwoven fabric (about 25°) and the formation of larger fibers (100–1100 nm). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to detect the presence of the protein, and UV-Vis spectrophotometry was used to determine the loading efficiency and the nature of the release. The results showed that the location of the micelles influenced the release profiles of the protein, and the materials modified with micelles with the nonionic surfactant showed no burst release. The release kinetics was characteristic of the zero-order release model compared to anionic surfactants. The selected surfactant concentrations did not adversely affect the biological properties of fibrous substrates, such as high viability and low cytotoxicity of RAW macrophages 264.7.

Abstract
The dissolution and extraction of lignin from biomass represents a great challenge due to the complex structure of this natural phenolic biopolymer. In this work, several surfactants (i.e., non-ionic, anionic, and cationic) were used as additives to enhance the dissolution efficiency of model lignin (kraft) and to boost lignin extraction from pine sawdust residues. To the best of our knowledge, cationic surfactants have never been systematically used for lignin dissolution. It was found that ca. 20 wt.% of kraft lignin is completely solubilized using 1 mol L-1 octyltrimethylammonium bromide aqueous solution. A remarkable dissolution efficiency was also obtained using 0.5 mol L-1 polysorbate 20. Furthermore, all surfactants used increased the lignin extraction with formic acid, even at low concentrations, such as 0.01 and 0.1 mol L-1. Higher concentrations of cationic surfactants improve the extraction yield but the purity of extracted lignin decreases.

Abstract
Hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) is a biocompatible, biodegradable, nontoxic, hydrophilic, non- ionic water soluble derivative of cellulose. It is broadly used in biomedical field, paint industry, as a soil amendment in agriculture, coal dewatering, cosmetics, absorbent pads, wastewater treatment and gel electrolyte membranes. Industrial uses of HEC can be extended by the its grafting with different polymers including poly acrylic acid, polyacrylamide, polylactic acid, polyethyleneglycol, polydimethyleamide, polycaprolactone, polylactic acid and dimethylamino ethylmethacrylate. This permits the formation of new biomaterials with improved properties and versatile applications. In this article, a comprehensive overview of graft copolymers of HEC with other polymers/compounds and their applications in drug delivery, stimuli sensitive hydrogels, super absorbents, personal hygiene products and coal dewatering is presented.
