Abstract
BACKGROUND Listening to heartbeat sounds have been found to affect cardiac activity and behavior. However, less is known about the effects of these stimuli on brain activity and cognition. Alpha oscillations (8-13 Hz) are considered markers of cortical activation. Frontal alpha Asymmetry (FαA) reflects the valence attributed to the stimulus and the tendency to approach/avoid it. AIM This study investigates the effects of sounds mimicking heart pulsations at different rhythms on reaction times and neurophysiological activity. METHOD EEG data were collected during a resting-state condition and two Simple Reaction Time tasks (SRT), during which artificially generated heartbeat sounds at fast (120 bpm, FastBeat condition) or slow (60 bpm, SlowBeat condition) rhythms were administered. Alpha power was compared across the three conditions. Differences in the SRT and FαA values were examined between the FastBeat and SlowBeat conditions. RESULTS Compared to the resting-state condition, decreased alpha activity over bilateral frontocentral regions was observed in both tasks. The comparison between the FastBeat and the SlowBeat conditions revealed faster response times, a pattern of alpha suppression over right frontal regions, and lower FαA values in the former. CONCLUSIONS The similarity of alpha reductions elicited in the comparison between the resting-state and the two task conditions suggests that these patterns were ascribable to processes common to both conditions (SRT task, auditory stimulation). In contrast, the differences between the two conditions suggest that fast heartbeat sounds are perceived as more adverse and stressful stimuli, inducing cortical activation over regions associated with negative states and avoidant tendencies.

Abstract
Previous research has shown that visual impairment results in reduced audio, tactile and proprioceptive ability. One hypothesis is that these issues arise from inaccurate body representations. Few studies have investigated metric body representations in a visually impaired population. We designed an ecologically valid behavioural task in which visually impaired adults haptically explored various sized gloves or shoes. They were asked to indicate if they perceived each clothing item as bigger than the size of their hand or foot. In the post-hoc analyses we fit psychometric curves to the data to extract the point of subjective equality. We then compared the results to age/sex matched controls. We hypothesized the blind participants body representations should be more distorted. Because previous research has shown that females are more likely to overestimate body size, we predicted sex differences in the sighted participants. However, because blind adults have no exposure to visual ideals of body size, we predicted that there would be no sex differences. Our results showed thatblind participants overestimated their hands and feetto a similar degree. Sighted controls overestimated their hands significantly more than their feet. Taken together, our results partially support our hypothesis and suggest that visual deprivation, even for short periods result in hand size overestimation.

Abstract
An interesting interpretation of embodiment highlights the critical role of mental body representations (BR), including motor, somatosensory, and interoceptive formats, for social cognition. However, the nature of this relationship is still debated at the empirical level, with various studies arriving at different conclusions. Here, we present a systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to summarize data from 3466 participants in 21 studies to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between inner and outer BR and social cognition. We focused on two core social cognition aspects: empathy and Theory of Mind (ToM). Concerning the inner BR, our meta-analytic findings reveal a significant correlation between specific interoceptive dimensions (i.e., interoceptive sensibility and accuracy) and social cognition, which was stronger for empathy than ToM. Conversely, although further research is needed, functional BR that mainly involve the outer body processing (i.e., nonaction-oriented BR) may show positive links with ToM. These findings point to specific interactions between BR and social cognition skills, supporting multi-faceted and embodied social cognition models. However, we also identified critical knowledge gaps and highlighted the need for further investigation to deepen our theoretical understanding of these relationships and their implications for clinical practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is an increasingly strong demand for appearance and physical beauty in social life, marriage, and other aspects with the development of society and the improvement of material living standards. An increasing number of people have improved their appearance and physical shape through aesthetic plastic surgery. The female breast plays a significant role in physical beauty, and droopy or atrophied breasts can frequently lead to psychological inferiority and lack of confidence in women. This, in turn, can affect their mental health and quality of life. AIM To analyze preoperative and postoperative self-image pressure-level changes of autologous fat breast augmentation patients and their impact on social adaptability. METHODS We selected 160 patients who underwent autologous fat breast augmentation at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinxiang Medical University from January 2020 to December 2022 using random sampling method. The general information, self-image pressure level, and social adaptability of the patients were investigated using a basic information survey, body image self-assessment scale, and social adaptability scale. The self-image pressure-level changes and their effects on the social adaptability of patients before and after autologous fat breast augmentation were analyzed. RESULTS We collected 142 valid questionnaires. The single-factor analysis results showed no statistically significant difference in the self-image pressure level and social adaptability score of patients with different ages, marital status, and monthly income. However, there were significant differences in social adaptability among patients with different education levels and employment statuses. The correlation analysis results revealed a significant correlation between the self-image pressure level and social adaptability score before and after surgery. Multiple factors analysis results showed that the degree of concern caused by appearance in self-image pressure, the degree of possible behavioral intervention, the related distress caused by body image, and the influence of body image on social life influenced the social adaptability of autologous fat breast augmentation patients. CONCLUSION The self-image pressure on autologous fat breast augmentation patients is inversely proportional to their social adaptability.

Abstract
Over the past twenty years, scientific research on body representations has grown significantly, with Body Memory (BM) emerging as a prominent area of interest in neurorehabilitation. Compared to other body representations, BM stands out as one of the most obscure due to the multifaceted nature of the concept of "memory" itself, which includes various aspects (such as implicit vs. explicit, conscious vs. unconscious). The concept of body memory originates from the field of phenomenology and has been developed by research groups studying embodied cognition. In this narrative review, we aim to present compelling evidence from recent studies that explore various definitions and explanatory models of BM. Additionally, we will provide a comprehensive overview of the empirical settings used to examine BM. The results can be categorized into two main areas: (i) how the body influences our memories, and (ii) how memories, in their broadest sense, could generate and/or influence metarepresentations-the ability to reflect on or make inferences about one's own cognitive representations or those of others. We present studies that emphasize the significance of BM in experimental settings involving patients with neurological and psychiatric disorders, ultimately analyzing these findings from an ontogenic perspective.

Abstract
It has been shown that observing a face being touched or moving in synchrony with our own face increases self-identification with the former which might alter both cognitive and affective processes. The induction of this phenomenon, termed enfacement illusion, has often relied on laboratory tools that are unavailable to a large audience. However, digital face filters applications are nowadays regularly used and might provide an interesting tool to study similar mechanisms in a wider population. Digital filters are able to render our faces in real time while changing important facial features, for example, rendering them more masculine or feminine according to normative standards. Recent literature using full-body illusions has shown that participants' own gender identity shifts when embodying a different gendered avatar. Here we studied whether participants' filtered faces, observed while moving in synchrony with their own face, may induce an enfacement illusion and if so, modulate their gender identity. We collected data from 35 female and 33 male participants who observed a stereotypically gender mismatched version of themselves either moving synchronously or asynchronously with their own face on a screen. Our findings showed a successful induction of the enfacement illusion in the synchronous condition according to a questionnaire addressing the feelings of ownership, agency and perceived similarity. However, we found no evidence of gender identity being modulated, neither in explicit nor in implicit measures of gender identification. We discuss the distinction between full-body and facial processing and the relevance of studying widely accessible devices that may impact the sense of a bodily self and our cognition, emotion and behaviour.

Abstract
Although predicted by the notion of embodied morality, it remains unknown whether a reduced sense of body ownership (SoO) is associated with increased or decreased dishonesty. To clarify this issue, we tested patients with body integrity dysphoria (BID), a clinical condition characterized by chronic reductions of SoO toward one leg that patients persistently desire to have amputated. Participants with BID played a card game in which they could voluntarily tell the truth or cheat an opponent, and thus either steal or give them money. To assess whether SoO toward the effector limb influences (im)moral decisions, responses were communicated with the affected or the unaffected leg. We found that a higher number of self-gain lies was followed by further reductions of SoO toward the affected leg. Our result supports the idea that reductions of SoO may follow immoral behaviors to distance from unwanted characteristics of the self, like one's own dishonesty.

Abstract
There is a constant reciprocal flow of information between the malleable sensorimotor states of the body and cognitive functions, and some embodied cognition approaches argue that many cognitive-affective mechanisms depend on the physical characteristics of the body. To examine such influences of bodily state, the current study compared patients with body integrity dysphoria (BID) with an amputation desire of the lower limb to a healthy control group on an Implicit Association Test for self-identity and self-esteem, and a pain evaluation task. Patients with BID completed the tasks once while emulating their desired bodily state and once while simulating their undesired bodily state, while healthy controls were split into two groups: one control group completed the experiment once while either sitting on one leg and once while sitting in a normal position, whereas the other control group completed both experiments while sitting in a normal position. Results demonstrate that patients with BID implicitly identify more strongly with an amputated body, whereas healthy controls demonstrate stronger identification with a complete body, independent of bodily state. Furthermore, implicit self-esteem did not differ between the groups and was also not modulated by bodily state manipulation in any of the groups. Pain evaluation ratings were not influenced by bodily state manipulation, perspective, or consistency. Pain forced choice response times, however, revealed that individuals with BID were faster to judge whether the stimulus depicted was painful when simulating their desired bodily state. These results provide insightful information to how both the subjective sense of body, as well as more transient alterations of objective sensorimotor states of the physical body may exert selective pressure on certain cognitive tasks.

Abstract
Background Neuropathic pain after spinal cord injury (SCI) is notoriously hard to treat. Mechanisms of neuropathic pain are unclear, which makes finding effective treatments challenging. Prior studies have shown that adults with SCI have body awareness deficits. Recent imaging studies, including ours, point to the parietal operculum and insula as key areas for both pain perception and body awareness. Cognitive multisensory rehabilitation (CMR) is a physical therapy approach that helps improve body awareness for pain reduction and sensorimotor recovery. Based on our prior brain imaging work in CMR in stroke, we hypothesized that improving body awareness through restoring parietal operculum network connectivity leads to neuropathic pain relief and improved sensorimotor and daily life function in adults with SCI. Thus, the objectives of this study were to (1) determine baseline differences in resting-state and task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) brain function in adults with SCI compared to healthy controls and (2) identify changes in brain function and behavioral pain and pain-associated outcomes in adults with SCI after CMR. Methods Healthy adults underwent a one-time MRI scan and completed questionnaires. We recruited community-dwelling adults with SCI-related neuropathic pain, with complete or incomplete SCI >3 months, and highest neuropathic pain intensity level of >3 on the Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS). Participants with SCI were randomized into two groups, according to a delayed treatment arm phase I randomized controlled trial (RCT): Group A immediately received CMR intervention, 3x/week, 45 min/session, followed by a 6-week and 1-year follow-up. Group B started with a 6-week observation period, then 6 weeks of CMR, and a 1-year follow-up. Highest, average, and lowest neuropathic pain intensity levels were assessed weekly with the NPRS as primary outcome. Other primary outcomes (fMRI resting-state and functional tasks; sensory and motor function with the INSCI AIS exam), as well as secondary outcomes (mood, function, spasms, and other SCI secondary conditions), were assessed at baseline, after the first and second 6-week period. The INSCI AIS exam and questionnaires were repeated at the 1-year follow-up. Findings Thirty-six healthy adults and 28 adults with SCI were recruited between September 2020 and August 2021, and of those, 31 healthy adults and 26 adults with SCI were enrolled in the study. All 26 participants with SCI completed the intervention and pre-post assessments. There were no study-related adverse events. Participants were 52±15 years of age, and 1-56 years post-SCI. During the observation period, group B did not show any reductions in neuropathic pain and did not have any changes in sensation or motor function (INSCI ASIA exam). However, both groups experienced a significant reduction in neuropathic pain after the 6-week CMR intervention. Their highest level of neuropathic pain of 7.81±1.33 on the NPRS at baseline was reduced to 2.88±2.92 after 6 weeks of CMR. Their change scores were 4.92±2.92 (large effect size Cohen's d =1.68) for highest neuropathic pain, 4.12±2.23 ( d =1.85) for average neuropathic pain, and 2.31±2.07 ( d =1.00) for lowest neuropathic pain. Nine participants out of 26 were pain-free after the intervention (34.62%). The results of the INSCI AIS testing also showed significant improvements in sensation, muscle strength, and function after 6 weeks of CMR. Their INSCI AIS exam increased by 8.81±5.37 points ( d =1.64) for touch sensation, 7.50±4.89 points ( d =1.53) for pin prick sensation, and 3.87±2.81 ( d =1.38) for lower limb muscle strength. Functional improvements after the intervention included improvements in balance for 17 out of 18 participants with balance problems at baseline; improved transfers for all of them and a returned ability to stand upright with minimal assistance in 12 out of 20 participants who were unable to stand at baseline. Those improvements were maintained at the 1-year follow-up. With regard to brain imaging, we confirmed that the resting-state parietal operculum and insula networks had weaker connections in adults with SCI-related neuropathic pain (n=20) compared to healthy adults (n=28). After CMR, stronger resting-state parietal operculum network connectivity was found in adults with SCI. Also, at baseline, as expected, right toe sensory stimulation elicited less brain activation in adults with SCI (n=22) compared to healthy adults (n=26). However, after CMR, there was increased brain activation in relevant sensorimotor and parietal areas related to pain and mental body representations (i.e., body awareness and visuospatial body maps) during the toe stimulation fMRI task. These brain function improvements aligned with the AIS results of improved touch sensation, including in the feet. Interpretation Adults with chronic SCI had significant neuropathic pain relief and functional improvements, attributed to the recovery of sensation and movement after CMR. The results indicate the preliminary efficacy of CMR for restoring function in adults with chronic SCI. CMR is easily implementable in current physical therapy practice. These encouraging impressive results pave the way for larger randomized clinical trials aimed at testing the efficacy of CMR to alleviate neuropathic pain in adults with SCI. Abstract
Bodily sensation mapping (BSM) is a recently developed self-report tool for the assessment of emotions in which people draw their sensations of activation in a body silhouette. Following the circumplex model of affect, activity and valence are the underling dimensions of every emotional experience. The aim of this study was to introduce the neglected valence dimension in BSM. We found that participants systematically report valence-related sensations of bodily lightness for positive emotions (happiness, love, pride), and sensations of bodily heaviness in response to negative emotions (e.g., anger, fear, sadness, depression) with specific body topography (Experiment 1). Further experiments showed that both computers (using a machine learning approach) and humans recognize emotions better when classification is based on the combined activity- and valence-related BSMs compared to either type of BSM alone (Experiments 2 and 3), suggesting that both types of bodily sensations reflect distinct parts of emotion knowledge. Importantly, participants found it clearer to indicate their bodily sensations induced by sadness and depression in terms of bodily weight than bodily activity (Experiment 2 and 4), suggesting that the added value of valence-related BSMs is particularly relevant for the assessment of emotions at the negative end of the valence spectrum.

Abstract
A specific interpretation of embodiment assigns a central role to the body representations (BR) in cognition. In the social cognition domain, BR could be pivotal in representing others' actions and states. However, empirical evidence on the relationship between different BR and social cognition, in terms of Theory of Mind (ToM), in the same sample of participants is missing. Here, this relationship was explored considering individual differences in the action-oriented BR (aBR), nonaction-oriented BR (NaBR), and subjective predisposition toward internal bodily sensations (interoceptive sensibility, ISe). Eighty-two healthy adults were given behavioral measures probing aBR, NaBR, ISe, and affective/cognitive ToM. The results suggest that NaBR, which mainly relies on exteroceptive signals, predicts individual differences in cognitive ToM, possibly because it can allow differentiating between the self and others. Instead, the negative association between affective ToM and ISe suggests that an alteration of the internal body state representation (i.e., over-reporting interoceptive sensations) can affect emotional processing in social contexts. The finding that distinct aspects of the body processing from within (ISe) and from the outside (NaBR) differently contribute to ToM provides empirical support to the BR role in social cognition and can be relevant for developing interventions in clinical settings.

Abstract
During autoscopic phenomena, people perceive a double of themselves in extrapersonal space. Such clinical allocentric self-experiences sometimes co-occur with auditory hallucinations, yet experimental setups to induce similar illusions in healthy participants have generally neglected acoustic cues. We investigated whether feeling the presence of an auditory double could be provoked experimentally by recording healthy participants' own versus another person's voice and movements using binaural headphones from an egocentric (the participants' own) and an allocentric (a dummy head located elsewhere) perspective. When hearing themselves allocentrically, participants reported feeling a self-identified presence extracorporeally, an arguably distinct quality of autoscopy. Our results suggest that participants without hallucinatory experiences localized their own voice closer to themselves compared to that of another person. Explorative findings suggest that distinct patterns for hallucinators should be further investigated. This study suggests a successful induction of the feeling of an acoustic doppelganger, bridging clinical phenomena and experimental work.

Abstract
Mounting evidence has demonstrated that embodied virtual reality, during which physical bodies are replaced with virtual surrogates, can strongly alter cognition and behavior even when the virtual body radically differs from one's own. One particular emergent area of interest is the investigation of how virtual gender swaps can influence choice behaviors. Economic decision-making paradigms have repeatedly shown that women tend to display more prosocial sharing choices than men. To examine whether a virtual gender swap can alter gender-specific differences in prosociality, 48 men and 51 women embodied either a same- or different-gender avatar in immersive virtual reality. In a between-subjects design, we differentiated between specifically social and non-social decision-making by means of a virtually administered interpersonal and intertemporal discounting task, respectively. We hypothesized that a virtual gender swap would elicit social behaviors that stereotypically align with the gender of the avatar. To relate potential effects to changes in self-perception, we also measured implicit and explicit identification with gendered (or gender-typical) traits prior to and following the virtual experience, and used questionnaires that assessed the strength of the illusion. Contrary to our hypothesis, our results show that participants made less prosocial decisions (i.e., became more selfish) in different-gender avatars, independent of their own biological sex. Moreover, women embodying a male avatar in particular were more sensitive to temptations of immediate rewards. Lastly, the manipulation had no effects on implicit and explicit identification with gendered traits. To conclude, while we showed that a virtual gender swap indeed alters decision-making, gender-based expectancies cannot account for all the task-specific interpersonal and intertemporal changes following the virtual gender swap.

Abstract
It is well established that vision, and in particular color, may modulate our experience of flavor. Such cross-modal correspondences have been argued to be bilateral, in the sense that one modality can modulate the other and vice versa. However, the amount of literature assessing how vision modulates flavor is remarkably larger than that directly assessing how flavor might modulate vision. This is more exaggerated in the context of cross-modal contrasts (when the expectancy in one modality contrasts the experience through another modality). Here, using an embodied mixed reality setup in which participants saw a liquid while ingesting a contrasting one, we assessed both how vision might modulate basic dimensions of flavor perception and how the flavor of the ingested liquid might alter the perceived color of the seen drink. We replicated findings showing the modulation of flavor perception by vision but found no evidence of flavor modulating color perception. These results are discussed in regard to recent accounts of multisensory integration in the context of visual modulations of flavor and bilateral cross-modulations. Our findings might be important as a step in understanding bilateral visual and flavor cross-modulations (or the lack of them) and might inform developments using embodied mixed reality technologies.

Abstract
To efficiently interact with the external world, the brain needs to represent the size of the involved body parts - body representations (BR) - and the space around the body in which the interactions with the environment take place - peripersonal space representation (PPS). BR and PPS are both highly flexible, being updated by the continuous flow of sensorimotor signals between the brain and the body, as observed for example after tool-use or immobilization. The progressive decline of sensorimotor abilities typically described in ageing could thus influence BR and PPS representations in the older adults. To explore this hypothesis, we compared BR and PPS in healthy young and older participants. By focusing on the upper limb, we adapted tasks previously used to evaluate BR and PPS plasticity, i.e., the body-landmarks localization task and audio-tactile interaction task, together with a new task targeting explicit BR (avatar adjustment task, AAT). Results show significantly higher distortions in the older rather than young participants in the perceived metric characteristic of the upper limbs. We found significant modifications in the implicit BR of the global shape (length and width) of both upper limbs, together with an underestimation in the arm length. Similar effects were also observed in the AAT task. Finally, both young and older adults showed equivalent multisensory facilitation in the space close to the hand, suggesting an intact PPS representation. Together, these findings demonstrated significant alterations of implicit and explicit BR in the older participants, probably associated with a less efficient contribution of bodily information typically subjected to age-related decline, whereas the comparable PPS representation in both groups could be supported by preserved multisensory abilities in older participants. These results provide novel empirical insight on how multiple representations of the body in space, subserving actions and perception, are shaped by the normal course of life.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aimed to assess the impact of an educational program on the symptoms and quality of life of patients undergoing supervised pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT). Secondary objectives included: baseline assessment of patients' knowledge of the pelvic floor; and patient satisfaction and symptom improvement after the entire PFMT program. MATERIAL AND METHODS An observational questionnaire-based study in women attending a PFMT program consisting of four educational sessions, one visual feedback session, and five personalized training sessions. The patients completed the questionnaire at baseline, after the four educational sessions and then after completion of program. The questionnaires included the ICIQ-SF, USP, Contilife, PFDI 20, Kess and Wexner scores. Additional questions were added before treatment about the patient's knowledge of the pelvic floor. RESULTS Seventy-nine women were included. Improvement in symptoms was significant after the four educational sessions: mean PFDI-20 score decreased from 68.5-29.5 (p < 0.05); ICIQ-SF score from 8.0-3.1 (p < 0.05), Wexner and Kess scores from 8.2-6.5 and from 13.3-10 (p < 0.05). Symptom scores were also all significantly improved on completion of the program. After the four educational sessions, 50 of the 68 patients (73.5 %) with complete questionnaires reported feeling better or much better. Only 12 (15.2 %) women overall located the pelvic floor across the entire bottom of the pelvis. CONCLUSION This preliminary study suggests that four educational sessions can improve symptoms and quality of life before PFM reinforcement itself. If confirmed by larger prospective studies, a solid educational element should be systematically integrated in all PFMT programs.

Abstract
In everyday life, we constantly act and interact with objects and with others' people through our body. To properly perform actions, the representations of the dimension of body-parts (metric body representation, BR) and of the space surrounding the body (peripersonal space, PPS) need to be constantly updated. Previous evidence has shown that BR and PPS representation are highly flexible, being modulated by sensorimotor experiences, such as the active use of tools to reach objects in the far space. In this study, we investigate whether the observation of another person using a tool to interact with objects located in the far space is sufficient to influence the plasticity of BR and PPS representation in a similar way to active tool-use. With this aim, two groups of young healthy participants were asked to perform 20 min trainings based on the active use of a tool to retrieve far cubes (active tool-use) and on the first-person observation of an experimenter doing the same tool-use training (observational tool-use). Behavioural tasks adapted from literature were used to evaluate the effects of the active and observational tool-use on BR (body-landmarks localization task-group 1), and PPS (audio-tactile interaction task - group 2). Results show that after active tool-use, participants perceived the length of their arm as longer than at baseline, while no significant differences appear after observation. Similarly, significant modifications in PPS representation, with comparable multisensory facilitation on tactile responses due to near and far sounds, were seen only after active tool-use, while this did not occur after observation. Together these results suggest that a mere observational training could not be sufficient to significantly modulate BR or PPS. The dissociation found in the active and observational tool-use points out differences between action execution and action observation, by suggesting a fundamental role of the motor planning, the motor intention, and the related sensorimotor feedback in driving BR and PPS plasticity.

Abstract
Virtual reality (VR) protocols inducing illusory embodiment of avatars have shown a positive impact on participants' perception of outgroup members, in line with the idea that the simulation of another's sensorimotor states might underlie prosocial behavior. These studies, however, have been mostly confined to laboratory settings with student populations and the use of artificial avatars. In an interdisciplinary effort benefiting from the heterogeneous sample within a museum, we aimed at quantifying changes in interpersonal perception induced by embodying a transgender man narrating his life. We compared an artistic methodology mixing VR and elaborate sensorimotor stimulation to a more conventional primarily audiovisual VR experience. We tested how these affect embodiment and the perception of transgender men as measured by a brief implicit association test and a questionnaire. Neither significant difference in embodiment nor changes in implicit or explicit bias was found, the latter potentially due to the initially low bias in the group. We further assessed participants' illusory embodiment as a function of age, finding a negative correlation between these. The results are discussed with respect to current theories of embodiment, differences between laboratory and real-life settings, and the intersection of art and science.

Abstract
Heterotopagnosia-without-Autotopagnosia (HwA) is characterized by the incapacity to point to body parts on others, but not on one's own body. This has been classically interpreted as related to a self-other distinction, with impaired visual representations of other bodies seen in third person perspective (3PP), besides spared own body somatosensory representations in 1PP. However, HwA could be impacted by a deficit in the integration of visual and somatosensory information in space, that are spatially congruent in the case of one's own body, but not for others' body. Here, we test this hypothesis in a rare neurological patient with HwA, H+, as well as in a control patient with a comparable neuropsychological profile, but without HwA, and in age-matched healthy controls, in two experiments. First, we assessed body part recognition in a new task where somatosensory information from the participant's body and visual information from the target body shown in virtual reality was never aligned in space. Results show that, differently from the flawless performance in controls, H+ committed errors for not only the body of others in 3PP, but for all conditions where the information related to the real and the target body was not spatially congruent. Then, we tested whether the integration between these multisensory bodily cues in space, as during visuo-tactile stimulation in the full-body illusion, improves the patient's performance. Data show that after the stimulation prompting visuo-tactile integration, but not in control conditions, the patient's abilities to process body parts improved up to normal level, thus confirming and extending the first findings. Altogether, these results support a new interpretation of HwA as linked to the matching between somatosensory inputs from one's body and visual information from a body seen at a distance, and encourage the application of multisensory stimulation and virtual reality for the treatment of body-related disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Virtual reality technologies show potential as effective rehabilitation tools following neuro-trauma. In particular, the Elements system, involving customized surface computing and tangible interfaces, produces strong treatment effects for upper-limb and cognitive function following traumatic brain injury. The present study evaluated the efficacy of Elements as a virtual rehabilitation approach for stroke survivors. METHODS Twenty-one adults (42-94 years old) with sub-acute stroke were randomized to four weeks of Elements virtual rehabilitation (three weekly 30-40 min sessions) combined with treatment as usual (conventional occupational and physiotherapy) or to treatment as usual alone. Upper-limb skill (Box and Blocks Test), cognition (Montreal Cognitive Assessment and selected CogState subtests), and everyday participation (Neurobehavioral Functioning Inventory) were examined before and after inpatient training, and one-month later. RESULTS Effect sizes for the experimental group (d = 1.05-2.51) were larger compared with controls (d = 0.11-0.86), with Elements training showing statistically greater improvements in motor function of the most affected hand (p = 0.008), and general intellectual status and executive function (p ≤ 0.001). Proportional recovery was two- to three-fold greater than control participants, with superior transfer to everyday motor, cognitive, and communication behaviors. All gains were maintained at follow-up. CONCLUSION A course of Elements virtual rehabilitation using goal-directed and exploratory upper-limb movement tasks facilitates both motor and cognitive recovery after stroke. The magnitude of training effects, maintenance of gains at follow-up, and generalization to daily activities provide compelling preliminary evidence of the power of virtual rehabilitation when applied in a targeted and principled manner.
