Abstract
INTRODUCTION Since verbal memory and visual processing transpire within analogous cerebral regions, this study assessed (i) if a visual function can predict verbal memory performance. It also hypothesized whether neurocognitive (e.g., ImPACT) tests focusing on the Visual Memory and Cognitive Efficacy Index will predict Verbal Memory scores and (ii) if vision metrics and age can identify individuals with a history of concussion. Finally, it also hypothesized that King-Devick and near point of convergence scores alongside age considerations will identify candidates with a prior reported history of concussion. MATERIALS AND METHODS This observational cohort assessed 25 collegiate ice hockey players prior to the competitive season considering age (19.76 ± 1.42 years) and BMI (25.9 ± 3.0 kg/cm2). Hypothesis 1 was assessed using a hierarchical (sequential) multiple regression analysis, assessing the predictive capacity of Visual Memory and Cognitive Efficacy Index scores in relation to Verbal Memory scores. Hypothesis 2 utilized a binomial logistic regression to determine if King-Devick and near point of convergence scores predict those with a prior history of concussion. RESULTS Hypothesis 1 developed two models, where Model 1 included Visual Memory as the predictor, while Model 2 added the Cognitive Efficacy Index as a predictor for verbal memory scores. Model 1 significantly explained 41% of the variance. Results from Model 2 suggest that the Cognitive Efficacy Index explained an additional 24.4%. Thus, Model 2 was interpreted where only the Cognitive Efficacy Index was a significant predictor (p = 0.001). For every 1 unit increase in the Cognitive Efficacy Index, Verbal Memory increased by 41.16. Hypothesis 2's model was significant, accounting for 37.9% of the variance in those with a history of concussion. However, there were no significant unique predictors within the model as age (Wald = 1.26, p = 0.261), King-Devick (Wald = 2.31, p = 0.128), and near point of convergence (Wald = 2.43, p = 0.119) were not significant predictors individually. CONCLUSIONS The conflicting findings of this study indicate that baseline data for those with a history of concussion greater than one year may not be comparable to the same metrics during acute concussion episodes. Young athletes who sustain a concussion may be able to overcompensate via the visual system. Future prospective studies with larger sample sizes are required using the proposed model's objective metrics.

Abstract
Reported changes in electroencephalography (EEG)-derived spectral power after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) remains inconsistent across existing literature. However, this may be a result of previous analyses depending solely on observing spectral power within traditional canonical frequency bands rather than accounting for the aperiodic activity within the collected neural signal. Therefore, the aim of this study was to test for differences in rhythmic and arrhythmic time series across the brain, and in the cognitively relevant frontoparietal (FP) network, and observe whether those differences were associated with cognitive recovery post-mTBI. Resting-state electroencephalography (rs-EEG) was collected from 88 participants (56 mTBI and 32 age- and sex-matched healthy controls) within 14 days of injury for the mTBI participants. A battery of executive function (EF) tests was collected at the first session with follow-up metrics collected approximately 2 and 4 months after the initial visit. After spectral parameterization, a significant between-group difference in aperiodic-adjusted alpha center peak frequency within the FP network was observed, where a slowing of alpha peak frequency was found in the mTBI group in comparison to the healthy controls. This slowing of week 2 (collected within 2 weeks of injury) aperiodic-adjusted alpha center peak frequency within the FP network was associated with increased EF over time (evaluated using executive composite scores) post-mTBI. These findings suggest alpha center peak frequency within the FP network as a candidate prognostic marker of EF recovery and may inform clinical rehabilitative methods post-mTBI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Recent research suggests that patients with neurological disorders without overt seizures may also experience accelerated long-term forgetting (ALF). This term describes unimpaired learning and memory performance after standard retention intervals, but an excessive rate of forgetting over delays of days or weeks. The objective of this retrospective study was to investigate ALF in patients with an acquired brain injury (ABI) and to associate memory performance with executive functions. METHODS Verbal memory performance (short-term recall, 30-min recall, 1-week recall) was assessed in 34 adult patients with ABI and compared to a healthy control group (n = 54) using an auditory word learning and memory test. RESULTS Repeated measure analysis showed significant effects of time and group as well as interaction effects between time and group regarding recall and recognition performance. Patients with ABI had a significantly impaired 1-week recall and recognition performance compared to the healthy control group. Correlations between recall performance and executive functions were nonsignificant. DISCUSSION Our results demonstrate that non-epileptic patients with ABI, especially patients with frontal and fronto-temporal lesions, are prone to ALF. Additionally, our data support the assumption that ALF results from a consolidation impairment since verbal recall and recognition were impaired in patients with ABI.

Abstract
Cognitive impairment and post-concussive symptoms (PCS) represent hallmark sequelae of pediatric mild traumatic brain injury (pmTBI). Few studies have directly compared cognition as a function of PCS status longitudinally. Cognitive outcomes were therefore compared for asymptomatic pmTBI, symptomatic pmTBI, and healthy controls (HC) during sub-acute (SA; 1-11 days) and early chronic (EC; approximately 4 months) post-injury phases. We predicted worse cognitive performance for both pmTBI groups relative to HC at the SA visit. At the EC visit, we predicted continued impairment from the symptomatic group, but no difference between asymptomatic pmTBI and HCs. A battery of clinical (semi-structured interviews and self-report questionnaires) and neuropsychological measures were administered to 203 pmTBI and 139 HC participants, with greater than 80% retention at the EC visit. A standardized change method classified pmTBI into binary categories of asymptomatic or symptomatic based on PCS scores. Symptomatic pmTBI performed significantly worse than HCs on processing speed, attention, and verbal memory at SA visit, whereas lower performance was only present for verbal memory for asymptomatic pmTBI. Lower performance in verbal memory persisted for both pmTBI groups at the EC visit. Surprisingly, a minority (16%) of pmTBI switched from asymptomatic to symptomatic status at the EC visit. Current findings suggest that PCS and cognition are more closely coupled during the first week of injury but become decoupled several months post-injury. Evidence of lower performance in verbal memory for both asymptomatic and symptomatic pmTBI suggests that cognitive recovery may be a process separate from the resolution of subjective symptomology.

Abstract
Background: Homeless and precariously housed persons exhibit significant memory impairment, but the component processes underlying memory dysfunction have not been explored. We examined the serial position profile (i.e., primacy and recency effects) of verbal memory and its neuroanatomical correlates to identify the nature of memory difficulties in a large cohort of homeless and precariously housed adults. Method: The sample included 227 community-dwelling homeless and precariously housed adults. Serial position scores (primacy, middle, recency) were computed using the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised. Paired sample t-tests were used to compare percent recall from each word list region. Age-adjusted correlations assessed associations between serial position scores and other cognitive domains (attention, processing speed, executive functioning). Regression analyses were conducted to examine regional brain volumes of interest (hippocampus, entorhinal cortex, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex [DLPFC]) and their differential associations with serial position scores. Results: The serial position profile was characterized by a diminished recency effect in relation to the primacy effect. Serial position scores positively correlated with sustained attention and cognitive control. Larger hippocampal volume was associated with better primacy item recall. DLPFC volume was not associated with serial position recall after adjustment for false discovery rate. There were no associations between regional brain volumes and recency item recall. Conclusion: Our results suggest that commonly reported memory difficulties in homeless and precariously housed adults are likely secondary to a core deficit in executive control due to compromised frontal lobe functioning. These findings have implications for cognitive rehabilitation in this complex and vulnerable group.

Abstract
Executive functions (EF) were the critical neuropsychological functions linked to long-term adaptation. Given the heterogeneous prognosis trajectories of mild traumatic brain jury (mTBI), the mildest TBI may not always be benign in the chronic stage. The present study explored the long-term EF in patients with chronic complicated mTBI and a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score of 15. Fifty patients with complicated mTBI and GCS scores of 15 and 35 control participants were recruited in this study. Medical records were retrospectively analyzed, and neuropsychological assessments and subjective measures examined the neuropsychological functions. Compared with healthy controls, complicated mTBI patients with a GCS score of 15 performed significantly worse on most EF assessments, including longer reaction time (RT) and poor cognitive flexibility and abstract reasoning performances. Patients also reported more EF problems and lower quality of life (QoL) than healthy controls. Females and those with subdural hematoma (SDH) had significantly longer reaction times (RT) on executive attention tests. This study found that complicated mTBI with a GCS score of 15 had incomplete recovery of EF, even in the chronic stage. We suggest that early neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation should be arranged for such patients.

Abstract
Introduction Binge drinking (BD) is a common health-risk behavior among young people. Due to the incomplete maturation of the adolescent brain, BD can lead to structural and functional changes that impact neurocognitive processes, particularly executive functioning and verbal memory. This study aimed to investigate the influence of executive components, such as mnemonic strategies and error avoidance, on performance in a verbal memory test and the potential effects of BD on this performance. Methods A sample of 160 college students (51.55% female) with a mean age of 18.12 ± 0.32 years completed assessments for alcohol use disorders using the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT), as well as psychopathological (Symptom Checklist-90-R) and neuropsychological evaluations (Verbal Learning Test Spain-Complutense and WMS-III Logical Memory). The Intensive Drinking Evaluation Instrument (IECI) was utilized to gather detailed information about binge drinking habits, including the calculation of the highest blood alcohol concentration (BAC) during an episode of intake. Results Correlation and clustering analyses revealed a negative association between BAC values and verbal memory performance, as well as the use of memory strategies. The high BAC group (BD) exhibited negative values in verbal memory variables, higher accuracy errors, and less efficient strategy usage, while the low BAC group (No BD) demonstrated better memory test performance, fewer precision errors, and superior use of memory strategies. Discussion These findings support the hypothesis that, when solving tests requiring verbal memory, adolescents reporting a BD consumption pattern show fewer executive skills in their resolution and, therefore, achieved poorer performance than non-binge drinkers. Addressing excessive alcohol consumption in young individuals is crucial for safeguarding their cognitive development and overall well-being.

Abstract
Neurostimulation carries high therapeutic potential, accompanied by an excellent safety profile. In this review, we argue that an arena in which these tools could provide breakthrough benefits is traumatic brain injury (TBI). TBI is a major health problem worldwide, with the majority of cases identified as mild TBI (mTBI). MTBI is of concern because it is a modifiable risk factor for dementia. A major challenge in studying mTBI is its inherent heterogeneity across a large feature space (e.g., etiology, age of injury, sex, treatment, initial health status, etc.). Parallel lines of research in human and rodent mTBI can be collated to take advantage of the full suite of neuroscience tools, from neuroimaging (electroencephalography: EEG; functional magnetic resonance imaging: fMRI; diffusion tensor imaging: DTI) to biochemical assays. Despite these attractive components and the need for effective treatments, there are at least two major challenges to implementation. First, there is insufficient understanding of how neurostimulation alters neural mechanisms. Second, there is insufficient understanding of how mTBI alters neural function. The goal of this review is to assemble interrelated but disparate areas of research to identify important gaps in knowledge impeding the implementation of neurostimulation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION On some list-learning tasks, such as the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) or Hopkins Verbal Learning Test (HVLT), examinees have the opportunity to group words based on semantically related categories (i.e., semantic clustering). Semantic clustering (SC) is often considered the most efficient organizational strategy and adopting SC is presumed to improve learning and memory. In addition, SC is conceptualized as reflecting higher-order executive functioning skills. Although SC measures have intuitive appeal, to date, there are no comprehensive reviews of the SC literature base that summarize its psychometric utility. In this systematic review, we synthesize the literature to judge the validity of SC scores. METHOD We conducted a systematic literature search for empirical articles reporting SC from the CVLT and HVLT. We qualitatively described the relationship of SC with other list-learning and cognitive test scores and clinical diagnoses, contrasting SC with serial clustering and total learning scores when possible. RESULTS SC was inversely correlated with serial clustering. Higher SC was strongly associated with better learning and memory performances. When compared with cognitive tests, SC tended to have the strongest relationships with other memory measures and modest relationships with tests of executive functioning. SC had negligible to small relationships with most other cognitive domains. Traditional memory scores yielded stronger relationships to cognitive test performances than did SC. SC across clinical groups varied widely, but clinical groups tended to use SC less often than healthy comparison groups. CONCLUSION Our comprehensive review of the literature revealed that SC is strongly related to measures of learning and memory on the CVLT and HVLT and is correlated with a wide range of cognitive functions. SC has been understudied in relevant populations and additional research is needed to test the degree to which it adds incremental validity beyond traditional measures of learning and memory.

Abstract
Destination memory, which is the ability to remember to whom one has sent information, is intimately associated with social cognition. We assessed whether processing attributes of destinations would improve destination memory in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). In this cross-sectional study, we tested the destination memory of 24 patients with TBI and 25 control participants in two conditions. On the first one (control condition), we invited participants to tell proverbs to celebrities' faces in order to decide, on a subsequent recognition test, whether they previously told that proverb to that celebrity or not. On the second condition (experimental introspection condition), the same procedures were repeated. However, after telling the proverbs, we invited participants to introspect about what the destination might believe about the proverbs (e.g., "What do you think that the celebrities would think about the proverbs?"). Group comparisons demonstrated better destination memory after the introspection than when no introspection was implemented in control participants, but there were no significant differences between the two conditions in patients with TBI. However, analyses of individual profiles demonstrated that more than half (n = 13) of the patients with TBI demonstrated better destination memory after introspection. While these results demonstrate a beneficial effect of introspection on destination memory for some cases of patients with TBI, more research is needed to reveal how introspection may influence patients' memory in social interactions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Verbal memory (VM) is impaired in schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BD), and predicts psychosocial functioning. However, there is a lack of research exploring the role of VM component processes, including semantic clustering, in these disorders. Semantic clustering might impact this association, as effective semantic memory strategies may reflect unimpaired executive control, leading to an adequate functioning. We aimed to investigate VM components in SZ and BD, and the role of semantic clustering in the relationship between VM and functioning. METHODS We included 495 participants (156 SZ, 172 BD, and 167 healthy controls (HC)) that underwent an assessment using the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test - Revised for VM and the Functioning Assessment Short Test for psychosocial functioning. We compared groups through ANOVAs and investigated the effect of semantic clustering in the relationship between VM total immediate free recall and functioning through linear regression models. RESULTS SZ had worse overall VM performance compared to BD, which performed worse than HCs. HCs used more semantic clustering than SZ and BD, but there were no differences between the two clinical groups. In HCs, semantic clustering impacted the relationship between VM performance and functioning, while no interaction was observed in SZ or BD. LIMITATIONS Cross-sectional design; no medication effects or other cognitive functions were assessed. CONCLUSIONS SZ and BD may use an alternative cognitive pathway in which the relationship between VM and functioning is independent of complex cognitive processes such as semantic clustering, supporting the cognitive remediation targeting of VM in these disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Cognitive dysfunction and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common in methamphetamine patients. However, few studies have investigated the cognitive performance of methamphetamine patients with PTSD. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of comorbid PTSD on cognitive function in Chinese male methamphetamine patients. METHODS We analyzed 464 methamphetamine patients and 156 healthy volunteers. The PTSD Screening Scale (PCL-5) was used to assess PTSD and the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) was used to assess cognitive function. RESULTS Compared with healthy controls, methamphetamine patients had more cognitive dysfunction in immediate memory, visuospatial/constructional, language, attention and delayed memory. Moreover, methamphetamine patients with PTSD had less cognitive dysfunction in immediate memory, attention, and delayed memory than methamphetamine patients without PTSD. Further stepwise regression analysis showed that PTSD alterations in arousal and reactivity cluster were risk predictors for language, and PTSD negative alteration in cognition and mood cluster were risk predictors for delayed memory. CONCLUSIONS Our results indicate that methamphetamine patients without PTSD have poorer cognitive dysfunction than those with PTSD. Some demographic and PTSD symptom clusters are protective or risk factors for cognitive dysfunction in methamphetamine patients.

Abstract
Concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) with increasing prevalence among children and adolescents. Functional connectivity (FC) within and between the default mode network (DMN), central executive network (CEN) and salience network (SN) has been shown to be altered post-concussion. Few studies have investigated connectivity within and between these 3 networks following a pediatric concussion. The present study explored whether within and between-network FC differs between a pediatric concussion and orthopedic injury (OI) group aged 10-18. Participants underwent a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) scan at 4 weeks post-injury. One-way ANCOVA analyses were conducted between groups with the seed-based FC of the 3 networks. A total of 55 concussion and 27 OI participants were included in the analyses. Increased within-network FC of the CEN and decreased between-network FC of the DMN-CEN was found in the concussion group when compared to the OI group. Secondary analyses using spherical SN regions of interest revealed increased within-network FC of the SN and increased between-network FC of the DMN-SN and CEN-SN in the concussion group when compared to the OI group. This study identified differential connectivity patterns following a pediatric concussion as compared to an OI 4 weeks post-injury. These differences indicate potential adaptive brain mechanisms that may provide insight into recovery trajectories and appropriate timing of treatment within the first month following a concussion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative movement disorder that is a result of dopamine depletion in the basal ganglia. Individuals with a PD diagnosis experience motor symptoms (e.g., tremors) and nonmotor symptoms (e.g., cognitive decline). Previous studies suggest that progression of cognitive dysfunction in other neurologic populations can be predicted by cumulative head injuries. The study examined the association between lifelong number of head injuries and nonmotor outcomes (cognitive complaints, depression, and quality of life). METHODS Participants consisted of 3,483 individuals with PD diagnoses who were enrolled in the Fox Insight study. Participants completed a self-report questionnaire to quantify the number of head injuries experienced throughout life. Participants also completed measures of nonmotor outcomes (cognitive complaints, depression, and quality of life) every 6 months over a 3-year period. RESULTS Cognitive complaints were more common among those experiencing more head injuries. Further, more severe depression and greater difficulties in quality of life were reported among individuals experiencing a greater number of head injuries. Additional analyses revealed the effect between cognitive complaints and number of head injuries was driven by individuals who experienced five or more head injuries in their lifetime. CONCLUSIONS Among individuals with PD, a patient report of past head injuries may have prognostic implications for important nonmotor outcomes. Report of multiple head injuries may be particularly concerning.

Abstract
Objective: The concussion team at The University of Kansas Health System outpatient rehabilitation spine center is comprised of experienced multi-disciplinary experts including physical therapists and a speech language pathologist. The team set forth with a purpose of creating and organizing an internal physical therapy clinical recommendation protocol for initial evaluations and subsequent treatments for the concussed patient. The aim of this paper is to share these recommendation protocols with other therapy teams and provide a foundational layout for treating the patient with post-concussion symptoms in an outpatient physical therapy clinical setting. Study design: Clinical recommendation protocol provides guidance for patients ages 10+ from initial evaluation through discharge with emphasis on evidence-based research in the areas of: oculomotor, cervical, vestibular, post-concussion migraine influence, mood disorders(such as anxiety and depression), exertion, and cognitive communicative dysfunction. Results: Finding a written, comprehensive clinical resource protocol for post-concussion outpatient evaluation(s) and treatment strategies can be difficult. This document serves as a resource for other outpatient concussion rehabilitation clinics, providing rationale, and objective measurement tools, for assessing and treating concussion patients. To the authors’ knowledge, no other research has produced a practical, efficient evaluation tool to be utilized at bed side, condensing evidence-based research into an easy-to-use form. Conclusion: The University of Kansas Health System outpatient concussion rehabilitation center developed clinical recommendation protocols for concussion care. The intent was to standardize assessment and treatment for concussion patients and to share these objective measurement tools and procedures, focused on a team approach of concussion providers, as a clinical outline for both the novice and seasoned clinician specializing in the field of concussion work in an outpatient rehabilitation setting.

Abstract
Studies investigating the efficacy of errorless learning (EL), a rehabilitation method in which the occurrence of errors during learning are eliminated, have predominantly involved patients with memory impairment. However, the most recent perspective on the underlying mechanism of EL explicitly takes executive processes into account. The aim of this study was to investigate whether EL of object locations is beneficial for memory performance compared to trial-and-error learning (TEL) in patients with acquired brain injury (ABI) experiencing executive deficits (N = 15) and matched healthy controls (N = 15). Participants completed an EL and TEL condition of a computerized spatial learning task, in which the location of everyday objects had to be memorized. The number of errors made during learning was predetermined, varying from 0 (EL condition) to 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 errors (TEL condition). Results showed a beneficial effect of EL on memory performance in both ABI patients and controls (p < .001), but this advantage was not larger in ABI patients compared to controls and was not moderated by the amount of errors made during learning.

Abstract
Anodal high definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) targeting the pre-supplementary motor area/dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (pre-SMA/dACC) has recently been shown to improve verbal retrieval deficits in veterans with chronic traumatic brain injury (TBI) (Motes et al., 2020), but predictors of treatment response are unclear. We hypothesized that baseline delayed verbal recall, a sensitive measure for post-TBI chronic cognitive decline, would predict therapeutic effects of HD-tDCS targeting the pre-SMA/dACC for verbal retrieval deficits. Standardized verbal retrieval measures were administered at baseline, immediately after and 8 weeks after treatment completion. We applied mixed generalized linear modeling as a post-hoc subgroup analysis to the verbal retrieval scores that showed significant improvement in Motes at el. (2020) to examine effects of active stimulation across the groups with baseline-intact delayed recall (N = 10) and baseline-impaired delayed recall (N = 8), compared to sham (N = 7). Individuals with impaired baseline delayed recall showed significant improvement (compared to baseline) in both category fluency and color-word inhibition/switch, while individuals with intact delayed recall showed significant improvement only in color-word inhibition/switch. Baseline delayed verbal recall may therefore be considered as a predictor for future electromodulation studies targeting frontal structures to treat TBI-related verbal deficits.

Abstract
Apathy is a common and impairing sequela of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Yet, little is known about the neural mechanisms determining in which patients apathy does or does not develop post-TBI. We aimed to elucidate the impact of TBI on motivational neural circuits and how this shapes apathy over the course of TBI recovery. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were collected in patients with subacute mild TBI (n = 44), chronic mild-to-moderate TBI (n = 26), and nonbrain-injured control participants (CTRL; n = 28). We measured ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) functional connectivity (FC) as a function of apathy, using an a priori vmPFC seed adopted from a motivated decision-making study in an independent TBI study cohort. Patients reported apathy using a well-validated tool for assaying apathy in TBI. The vmPFC-to-wholebrain FC was contrasted between groups, and we fit regression models with apathy predicting vmPFC FC. Subacute and chronic TBI caused increased apathy relative to CTRL, replicating previous work suggesting that apathy has an enduring impact in TBI. The vmPFC was functionally connected to the canonical default network, and this architecture did not differ between subacute TBI, chronic TBI, and CTRL groups. Critically, in TBI, increased apathy scores predicted decreased vmPFC-dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) FC. Last, we subdivided the TBI group based on patients above versus below the threshold for "clinically significant apathy," finding that TBI patients with clinically significant apathy demonstrated comparable vmPFC-dACC FC to CTRLs, whereas TBI patients with subthreshold apathy scores demonstrated vmPFC-dACC hyperconnectivity relative to both CTRLs and patients with clinically significant apathy. Post-TBI vmPFC-dACC hyperconnectivity may represent an adaptive compensatory response, helping to maintain motivation and enabling resilience to the development of apathy after neurotrauma. Given the role of vmPFC-dACC circuits in value-based decision making, rehabilitation strategies designed to improve this ability may help to reduce apathy and improve functional outcomes in TBI.

Abstract
Episodic memory deficit is a symptom frequently observed after a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). However, few studies have investigated the impact of a single and acute mTBI on episodic memory and structural cerebral changes. To do so, we conducted two experiments. In the first, we evaluated verbal episodic memory by using a word recall test, in 52 patients with mTBI (mean age 33.1 [12.2] years) 2-4 weeks after a first mTBI, compared with 54 healthy controls (31.3 [9.2] years) and followed both groups up for 6 months. In the second, we measured hippocampal volume in a subset of 40 participants (20 patients with mTBI, 20 controls) from Experiment 1 using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI; T1-weighted images) and correlated memory performance scores to hippocampal volume. Experiment 1 showed significantly reduced verbal episodic memory within the first month after an mTBI and a tendency for a reduction 6 months later, more pronounced for men. In Experiment 2, patients with mTBI exhibited a generally reduced hippocampal volume; however, we did not observe any linear correlation between hippocampal volume and memory scores. These results suggest that one single mTBI is associated with both episodic memory alteration and reduced volume of the hippocampus in the acute phase. Future studies are needed to elucidate the link between both measures.

Abstract
Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), or concussion, accounts for 85% of all TBIs. Yet survivors anticipate full cognitive recovery within several months of injury, if not sooner, dependent upon the specific outcome/measure. Recovery is variable and deficits in executive function, e.g., working memory (WM) can persist years post-mTBI. We tested whether cognitive deficits persist in otherwise healthy undergraduates, as a conservative indicator for mTBI survivors at large. We collected WM performance (change detection, n-back tasks) using various stimuli (shapes, locations, letters; aurally presented numbers and letters), and wide-ranging cognitive assessments (e.g., RBANS). We replicated the observation of a general visual WM deficit, with preserved auditory WM. Surprisingly, visual WM deficits were equivalent in participants with a history of mTBI (mean 4.3 years post-injury) and in undergraduates with recent sports-related mTBI (mean 17 days post-injury). In seeking the underlying mechanism of these behavioral deficits, we collected resting state fMRI (rsfMRI) and EEG (rsEEG). RsfMRI revealed significantly reduced connectivity within WM-relevant networks (default mode, central executive, dorsal attention, salience), whereas rsEEG identified no differences (modularity, global efficiency, local efficiency). In summary, otherwise healthy current undergraduates with a history of mTBI present behavioral deficits with evidence of persistent disconnection long after full recovery is expected.

Abstract
Anhedonia is considered as one of the five dimensions of negative symptoms and mainly refers to the reduction of the capacity of feeling pleasure. Increasing evidence suggests that anhedonia in schizophrenia may be partly explained by cognitive impairment. However, the associations between specific cognitive impairment and anhedonia are not fully investigated. The purpose of this study was to examine anticipatory anhedonia, consummatory anhedonia, and their cognitive associations in schizophrenia. A total number of 100 patients with schizophrenia and 67 healthy volunteers were recruited. The clinical symptoms of schizophrenia were assessed. Anticipatory pleasure, consummatory pleasure, and cognitive functions of each participant were measured. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to investigate the influencing factors of anhedonia in schizophrenia. The results showed no significant differences in sex, age, education year, body mass index (BMI), and marital status between the schizophrenia group and healthy control group (all P > 0.05). Both anticipatory and consummatory pleasure in the schizophrenia group were significantly lower than those in the healthy control group (all P < 0.05). Immediate memory, visual spanning, language, attention, and delayed memory were significantly poorer in the schizophrenia group (all P < 0.05). The results showed that language deficit is an independent risk factor for anticipatory anhedonia (B' = 0.265, P = 0.008, 95% CI: 0.038-0.244), while delayed memory deficit is an independent risk factor for consummatory anhedonia (B' = 0.391, P < 0.001, 95% CI:0.085-0.237). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that reported the specific cognitive associations of anhedonia in schizophrenia. The findings have added new evidence on the influencing factors of anhedonia and provided clues for the associations between clinical manifestations of schizophrenia.
