Abstract
In this work, we report the infrared spectrum of the pyrene anion, measured using messenger tagging with up to three Ar atoms. We assign the spectrum using density functional theory and vibrational perturbation theory. We discuss our results in the context of computed and experimental spectra from the literature as well as recent observations from astronomical sources, addressing the question of whether polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon anions could contribute to the strong infrared emission bands at 3.29 μm from carbon-rich regions of space.

Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are major species in astrophysical environments, and this motivates their study in samples of astrochemical interest such as meteorites and laboratory analogues of stardust. Molecular analyses of carbonaceous matter in these samples show a dominant peak at m/z = 202.078 corresponding to C16H10. Obtaining information on the associated isomeric structures is a challenge for the molecular analysis of samples available in very small quantities (mg or less). Here we show that coupling laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry with ion trapping opens up the possibility of unraveling isomers by activating ion fragmentation via collisions or photon absorption. We report the best criteria for differentiating isomers with comparable dissociation energies, namely pyrene, fluoranthene, and 9-ethynylphenanthrene, on the basis of the parent dissociation curve and the ratio of dehydrogenation channels. Photoabsorption schemes (multiple photon absorption in the visible range and single photon absorption at 10.5 eV) are more effective in differentiating these isomers than activation by low energy collisions. The impact of the activation scheme on the fragmentation kinetics and dehydrogenation pathways is discussed. By analyzing the 10.5 eV photodissociation measurements with a simple kinetic model, we were able to derive a branching ratio for the H and 2H/H2 loss channels of the parent ions. The results suggest a role in the formation of H2 for bay hydrogens that are present in both fluoranthene and 9-ethynylphenanthrene. In addition, we suggest for the latter the presence of a highly competitive 2H loss channel, possibly associated with the formation of a pentagonal ring.

Abstract
The nuclear dynamics of the low-lying first four electronic states of the prototypical indenyl radical is investigated based on first principles calculations to rationalize the experimental vibronic structure of the radical. The study is performed following both time-dependent and time-independent quantum-chemistry approaches using a model diabatic Hamiltonian. The construction of model Hamiltonians is based on the fits of the adiabatic energies calculated from the electronic structure method. The analyses of the static and dynamics results of the present study corroborate the experimental findings regarding the shape of the spectrum, vibrational progressions and the lifetime of the excited state. Finally, the present theoretical investigations suggest that the electronic non-adiabatic effect is extremely important for a detailed study of the vibronic structure and the electronic relaxation mechanism of the low-lying electronic states of the indenyl radical.

Abstract
The interaction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules with water (H2O = W) is of fundamental importance in chemistry and biology. Herein, size-selected microhydrated naphthalene cation nanoclusters, Np+-W n (n ≤ 5), are characterized by infrared photodissociation (IRPD) spectroscopy in the C-H and O-H stretch range to follow the stepwise evolution of the hydration network around this prototypical PAH+ cation. The IRPD spectra are highly sensitive to the hydration structure and are analyzed by dispersion-corrected density functional theory calculations (B3LYP-D3/aug-cc-pVTZ) to determine the predominant structural isomers. For n = 1, W forms a bifurcated CH···O ionic hydrogen bond (H-bond) to two acidic CH protons of the bicyclic ring. For n ≥ 2, the formation of H-bonded solvent networks dominates over interior ion solvation, because of strong cooperativity in the former case. For n ≥ 3, cyclic W n solvent structures are attached to the CH protons of Np+. However, while for n = 3 the W3 ring binds in the CH···O plane to Np+, for n ≥ 4 the cyclic W n clusters are additionally stabilized by stacking interactions, leading to sandwich-type configurations. No intracluster proton transfer from Np+ to the W n solvent is observed in the studied size range (n ≤ 5), because of the high proton affinity of the naphthyl radical compared to W n . This is different from microhydrated benzene+ clusters, (Bz-W n )+, for which proton transfer is energetically favorable for n ≥ 4 due to the much lower proton affinity of the phenyl radical. Hence, because of the presence of polycyclic rings, the interaction of PAH+ cations with W is qualitatively different from that of monocyclic Bz+ with respect to interaction strength, structure of the hydration shell, and chemical reactivity. These differences are rationalized and quantified by quantum chemical analysis using the natural bond orbital (NBO) and noncovalent interaction (NCI) approaches.

Abstract
Radical cations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have been postulated to be molecular carriers of diffuse spectroscopic features observed in the interstellar medium. Several important observations made by stellar and laboratory spectroscopists motivated us to undertake a detailed theoretical study attempting to validate the recorded data. In continuation of our work on this subject, we here focus on a detailed theoretical study of the doublet ground (X̃) and low-lying excited (Ã, B̃, and C̃) electronic states of the radical cation of phenanthrene, pyrene, and acenaphthene molecule. A multistate and multimode theoretical model in a diabatic electronic basis is developed here through extensive ab initio quantum chemistry calculations. Employing this model, first-principles nuclear dynamics calculations are carried out to unravel the spectral assignment, time-dependent dynamics, and photostability of the mentioned electronic states of the radical cations. The theoretical results compare well with the observed experimental data.

Abstract
Excitation spectra of cation and anion radicals of unsaturated hydrocarbons, hexatriene(±), octatetraene(±), cyclopentadiene(+), 1,3-cyclohexadiene(+), and naphthalene(±), were studied by the symmetry adapted cluster-configuration interaction (SAC-CI) method. The calculated results reasonably reproduced the experimental spectra observed by one of the authors (T.S.) and gave reasonable assignments. The two bands observed in the experimental spectra were assigned to π-π(SOMO) and π(SOMO)-π* for the cation radicals and π*(SOMO)-π* and π-π*(SOMO) for the anion radicals, in order of increasing energy, except for naphthalene(±). The four bands of naphthalene(+) originated from π-π(SOMO), π-π(SOMO), π(SOMO)-π*, and π(SOMO)-π* and those of naphthalene(-) originated from π*(SOMO)-π*, π*(SOMO)-π*, π-π*(SOMO), π*(SOMO)-vπ*, and π-π*(SOMO), in order of increasing energy. The SOMO orbitals were involved in the intense bands of both cation and anion radicals. Moreover, the ionization energies (IEs) and electron affinities (EAs) of these hydrocarbons were in good agreement with the experimental values, whereas the EAs of hexatriene and octatetraene were predicted to be negative and positive, respectively. The calculated IE + EA values were nearly constant for the three π-π* pairing states of hexatriene(±), octatetraene(±), and naphthalene(±), indicating that the pairing theorem is valid even at the SAC-CI level.

Abstract
A theoretical approach is developed to pre-select individual polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as possible carriers of the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs). In this approach, a computer program is used to enumerate all PAH molecules with up to a specific number of fused benzene rings. Fast quantum chemical calculations are then employed to calculate the electronic transition energies, oscillator strengths, and rotational constants of these molecules. An electronic database of all PAHs with up to any specific number of benzene rings can be constructed this way. Comparison of the electronic transition energies, oscillator strengths, and rotational band contours of all PAHs in the database with astronomical spectra allows one to constrain the identities of individual PAHs as possible carriers of some of the intense narrow DIBs. Using the current database containing up to 10 benzene rings we have pre-selected 8 closed-shell PAHs as possible carriers of the famous lambda6614 DIB.

Abstract
AbstractCarbonaceous materials play an important role in space. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a ubiquitous component of organic matter in space. Their contribution is invoked in a broad spectrum of astronomical observations that range from the ultraviolet to the far-infrared and cover a wide variety of objects and environments from meteorites and interplanetary dust particles to outer Solar System bodies to the interstellar medium in the local Milky Way and in other galaxies. Extensive efforts have been devoted in the past two decades to experimental, theoretical, and observational studies of PAHs. A brief review is given here of the evidence obtained so far for the contribution of PAHs to the phenomena aforementioned. An attempt is made to distinguish the cases where solid evidence is available from cases where reasonable assumptions can be made to the cases where the presence - or the absence - of PAHs is purely speculative at this point.

Abstract
The incoherent broadband cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy is a technique in measuring small absorptions over a broad wavelength range. The setup consists of a conventional absorption spectrometer using an incoherent lamp and a charge coupled device detector, as well as a linear optical cavity placed around the absorbing sample, which enhances the effective path length through the sample. In this work the consequences of cavity length, mirror curvature, reflectivity, different light injection geometries, and spot size of the light source on the output intensity are studied and the implications to the signal-to-noise ratio of the absorption measurement are discussed. The symmetric confocal resonator configuration is identified as a special case with optimum imaging characteristics but with higher requirements for mechanical stability. Larger spot sizes of the light source were found to be favorable in order to reduce the negative effects of aberrations on the intensity.

Abstract
The study of the S1(1A1)<--S0(1A1) transition of benzo[g,h,i]perylene (BghiP, C22H12) in supersonic jets and solid rare gas matrices is reported. In the jet-cooled spectrum, the origin band position is located at 25,027.1+/-0.2 cm-1, the assignment being supported by the analysis of vibrational shifts and rotational band contours. Except for the origin band, which is weak, all bands are attributed to the fundamental excitation of nontotally symmetric b1 vibrational modes of S1. The intensity pattern is interpreted as a consequence of the weak oscillator strength of the electronic transition combined with intensity-borrowing through vibronic interaction between the S1(1A1) and S2(1B1) states. The spectra of the S1(1A1)<--S0(1A1) and S2(1B1)<--S0(1A1) transitions have also been measured for BghiP in solid neon and argon matrices. The comparison of the redshifts determined for either transition reveals that the polarizability of BghiP is larger in its S2 than in its S1 state. Bandwidths of 2.7 cm-1 measured in supersonic jets, which provide conditions relevant for astrophysics, are similar to those of most diffuse interstellar bands. The electronic transitions of BghiP are found to lie outside the ranges covered by present databases. From the comparison between experimental spectra and theoretical computations, it is concluded that the accuracy of empirical and ab initio approaches in predicting electronic energies is still not sufficient to identify astrophysically interesting candidates for spectroscopic laboratory studies.

Abstract
Laboratory measurements of the recombination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) ions with electrons are presented. Experimental data have been obtained at room temperature for azulene (C10H8) and acenaphthene (C12H10) cations by the Flowing Afterglow with PhotoIons method. The results confirm that the recombination of PAH ions is fast although well below the geometrical limit. The set of our recent and present measurements reveal a definite trend of increasing rate with the number of carbon atoms of the PAH. This behaviour that needs further characterization is potentially of great interest for charge state models as recombination is a dominant mechanism of PAH ion destruction in the interstellar medium. The design of experiments to measure the recombination of larger PAHs and their temperature dependence is discussed.

Abstract
The vibrational and electronic absorption spectra of dibenzo[b,def]chrysene (DBC) and its ions in argon matrixes have been recorded. Assignment of the observed infrared (IR) bands has been made by comparison with the density functional theory (DFT) computations of harmonic vibrational frequencies (with 6-31G(d,p) or 6-311+G(d,p) basis sets). Extensive time-dependent (TD) DFT calculations of vertical excitation energies have aided in the assignment of the experimental electronic absorption transitions. In general, the theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the observed ultraviolet and visible bands. By correlating IR and UV-visible band intensities (after UV photolysis), it has been shown that both DBC cations and anions are formed. The IR band intensity distributions of the DBC ions differ markedly from neutral DBC. A synthetic spectrum composed of neutral, cationic, and anionic DBC contributions compares reasonably well with the interstellar features of the "unidentified infrared" (UIR) bands from the reflection nebula NGC 7023. Finally, it is shown that the electronic absorption bands of the DBC ions lie in close proximity to several of the diffuse interstellar visible absorption bands (DIBs).

Abstract
Gas-phase cavity ring-down spectroscopy of jet-cooled benzo[ghi]perylene (C22H12) in the 26 950-28 600-cm(-1) spectral range is reported for the first time. This study is part of our extensive laboratory astrophysics program for the study of interstellar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The observed spectrum shows an intermediate level structure and significant broadening and is associated with the vibronically coupled S1(1A1)<--S0(1A1) and S2(1B1)<--S0(1A1) electronic transitions. Time-dependent density-functional calculations were performed to calculate the energetics, vibrational frequencies, and normal coordinates of the S1 and S2 states. A simple vibronic model was employed to account for the vibronic interaction between the vibronic levels of the S1 and S2 states. The calculated vibronic spectrum is found to be in good agreement with the experimental spectrum.

Abstract
The characteristics of the plasma generated by a pulsed discharge slit nozzle (PDN) are investigated. The PDN source is designed to produce and cool molecular ions creating an astrophysically relevant environment in the laboratory. A discharge model is applied to this system to provide a qualitative as well as a quantitative picture of the plasma. We find that the plasma's properties and behavior are characteristic of those of a glow discharge. We model the electron density and energy, as well as the argon ion and metastable atom number density. The results reveal a high abundance of metastable argon atoms in the expansion region, which is more than one order of magnitude higher than the abundance of electrons and ions. These findings confirm experimental observations, which concluded that large molecular ions are dominantly formed through Penning ionization of the neutral molecular precursors seeded in the supersonic expansion of argon gas. The simulations presented here will help optimize the yield of formation of molecular ions and radicals in the PDN source; they will also provide key physical insight into the characteristics of interstellar molecules and ions analogs in laboratory experiments.

Abstract
As part of our long-term program to test the diffuse interstellar band-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon hypothesis, we have investigated the S(1)<--S(0) electronic transition of neutral perylene (C(20)H(12)) in a combined experimental and theoretical study. Jet-cooled perylene was prepared with a pulsed discharge slit nozzle and detected by cavity ring-down spectroscopy. A number of vibronic features were observed in the 24 000-24 900 cm(-1) spectral range. Density functional and ab initio calculations were performed to determine the geometries, harmonic vibrational frequencies, and normal coordinates of both the S(0) and S(1) electronic states. A rotational temperature of 52+/-5 K was derived from a rotational contour analysis of the vibronic band associated with the 0-0 transition. A Franck-Condon treatment was carried out to calculate the vibronic spectrum of the S(1)<--S(0) transition. A good agreement was found between the calculated and the experimental spectra. A vibrational assignment is proposed and six normal modes are identified. The contribution of neutral compact polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to the diffuse interstellar bands is briefly discussed.
