Abstract
Three Schiff bases were synthesised by the condensation reaction between 2-napthaldehyde and aromatic amines to afford (E)-N-mesityl-1-(naphthalen-2-yl)methanimine (L1), (E)-N-(2,6-dimethylphenyl)-1-(naphthalen-2-yl)methanimine (L2) and (E)-N-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-1-(naphthalen-2-yl)methanimine (L3). The synthesised compounds were characterised using UV-visible, NMR (13C & 1H), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic methods while their purity was ascertained by elemental analysis. Structural analysis revealed that the naphthalene ring is almost coplanar with the imine functional group as evident by C1-C10-C11-N1 torsion angles of 176.4(2)° and 179.4(1)° in L2 and L3, respectively. Of all the various intermolecular contacts, H⋯H interactions contributed mostly towards the Hirshfeld surfaces of both L2 (58.7 %) and L3 (69.7 %). Quantum chemical descriptors of L1 - L3 were determined using Density Functional Theory (DFT) and the results obtained showed that the energy band gap (ΔE) for L1, L2 and L3 are 3.872, 4.023 and 4.004 eV respectively. The antidiabetic potential of the three compounds were studied using α-amylase and α-glucosidase assay. Compound L1 showed very promising antidiabetic activities with IC50 values of 58.85 μg/mL and 57.60 μg/mL while the reference drug (Acarbose) had 405.84 μg/mL and 35.69 μg/mL for α-amylase and α-glucosidase respectively. In-silico studies showed that L1 docking score as well as binding energies are higher than that of acarbose, which are recognized inhibitors of α-amylase together with α-glucosidase. Further insight from the RMSF, RMSD and RoG analysis predicted that, throughout the simulation L1 showcased evident influence on the structural stability of α-amylase. The antioxidant potential of the compounds was carried out using nitric oxide (NO), ferric reducing ability power (FRAP) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays. The compounds exhibited good to fairly antioxidant properties with L1 as well as L3 having IC50 values of 70.91 and 91.21 μg/mL respectively for NO scavenging activities assay, which comparatively outshined acarbose (reference drug) with IC50 value of 109.95 μg/mL. Pharmacology and pharmacokinetics approximations of L1 - L3 showed minimal violation of Lipinski's Ro5 and this projects them to be less toxic and orally bioavailable as potential templates for the design of therapeutics with antioxidant and antidiabetic activities.

Abstract
Understanding the mechanism of disulfide bond cleavage is important in various scientific disciplines including organic synthesis, catalysis, and biochemistry. In this study, an in silico investigation has been carried out for the dissociation of disulfide bonds using newly designed frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs). The study revealed that the cleavage of the disulfide bond by the FLP P(tBu)3/B(C2NBSHF2)3 can also be used like the conventional FLP (tBu)3P/B(C6F5)3. It has been observed that the reaction is almost thermoneutral in the gas phase but exothermic in nonpolar solvents, such as toluene, heptane, and hexane. Furthermore, the natural bond orbital (NBO) describes insights into the role of FLPs in facilitating this reaction. Additionally, reaction force and force constant studies shed light on the energy requirements for completing the reaction and the synchronous nature of the dissociation process, respectively. Reaction electronic flux (REF) and its separations give the pattern of electronic activity during the chemical reaction. Extended transition state-natural orbitals for chemical valence (ETS-NOCV) and principal interacting orbital (PIO) analysis provide valuable information about the orbital interactions during the chemical reaction.

Abstract
Density functional theory (DFT) calculation was used to analyse the structural and vibrational properties of Methyl 1-Methyl-4-nitro-pyrrole-2-carboxylate (MMNPC) using the cc-pVTZ basis set. The potential energy surface scan and the most stable molecular structure were optimized using Gaussian 09 program. A potential energy distribution calculation was used to calculate and assign vibrational frequencies using the VEDA 4.0 program package. The Frontier Molecular Orbitals (FMOs) were analysed to determine their related molecular properties. Ab initio density functional theory (B3LYP/cc-pVTZ) method with basis set was used to calculate 13C NMR chemical shift values of MMNPC in the ground state. Fukui function and molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) analysis confirmed the bioactivity of the MMNPC molecule. The charge delocalization and stability of the title compound were studied using natural bond orbital analysis. All experimental spectral values from FT-IR, FT-Raman, UV-VIS, and 13C NMR are in good agreement with the value calculated by the DFT. Molecular docking analysis was carried out to find the MMNPC compound that can be used as a potential drug development candidate for ovarian cancer.

Connection between nuclear and electronic Fukui functions beyond frontier molecular orbitals. J Chem Phys 2023; 159:124112. Abstract
Based on the relationship between average local ionization energy Ī(r) and average local electron affinity Ā(r) with the electronic Fukui functions, i.e., f-(r) and f+(r), respectively, in this paper, we establish a connection between nuclear and electronic Fukui functions beyond frontier molecular orbitals. As a consequence of this connection, we obtain expressions of average nuclear Fukui functions interpreted as a variation of average nucleophilicity or electrophilicity (weighted by the electronic orbital Fukui functions) with respect to nuclear displacements, which goes beyond the highest occupied molecular orbital/or lowest unoccupied molecular orbital consideration. Furthermore, from this connection and considering the frontier molecular orbital approximation, we derive expressions of nuclear Fukui functions in terms of the atom-condensed electronic Fukui functions, which imply a locality in the chemical reactivity and could be used to study the variation of local nucleophilicity or electrophilicity with respect to nuclear displacements. Finally, this new way to interpret the nuclear Fukui function could be useful in the future to study the chemical reactivity related to molecular vibrations, internal rotations, bond dissociation, chemical reaction along the model of reaction coordinate, and so on.

Abstract
A convenient and efficient synthetic protocol for the new selenadiazole. Thiadiazole and diazaphosphole derivatives incorporating a pyridazine moiety originating from 4-(4-aminophenyl)-4-oxobutanoic acid (1) were described. All newly synthesized compounds were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity using the disk diffusion method, and their cytotoxicity was evaluated against brine shrimp lethality bioassay. Using density functional theory (DFT), the frontier molecular orbital (FMO) and molecular electrostatic potential (MEPS) were studied to estimate the chemical reactivity and kinetic stability of each structure. Therefore, global descriptor parameters like electronegativity (χ), chemical hardness (η), and global softness (σ) were calculated. Consequently, the attained results were compared with the experimental data of the biological activity of the studied structures.

Abstract
The molecular dynamics and density functional theory (DFT) can be applied to discriminate electrocatalyst’s electron transfer (ET) properties. It will be interesting to discriminate the ET properties of green electrocatalysts such as amino acids. Here, we have used DFT to compare the electrocatalytic abilities of asparagine and glutamine at the carbon paste electrode interface. Cyclic voltammetric results reveal that the electrocatalytic activities of aspargine are higher than glutamine for dopamine sensing. Dopamine requires less energy to bind with asparagine when compared to glutamine. Additionally, asparagine has higher electron-donating and accepting powers. Therefore, asparagine has a higher electrocatalytic activity than glutamine—the ability for the asparagine and glutamine carbon electrodes to detect dopamine in commercial injection, and to obtain satisfactory results. As a part of the work, we have also studied dopamine interaction with the modified carbon surface using molecular dynamics.

Abstract
In this work, we focus our attention on the influence of 2nd-row transition metals on the structural geometries, electronic structures, and absorption characteristics of porphyrin linked with the C60 fullerene with oligo-p-phenyleneethynylenes (MP-C60-oligo-PPEs) compounds. The DFT/B3PW91-D3 and CAM-B3LYP-D3/6-31G (d) calculations revealed that various metals embedded within the porphyrin moiety give different bridge conformations and different HOMO-LUMO energy levels. We calculate the UV-Vis spectra and absorption parameters using the time-dependent ZINDO/S approach. Our findings indicate that all the compounds have enhanced absorptions in the visible light range, and their molecular orbital energies adopt the condition of sensitizers. However, all of the complexes except down spin states exhibit considerably charge spatial separation. The results suggest that the ZnP-C60-oligo-PPEs triad can meet the necessary conditions of the sensitizer of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) in comparison with other counterparts and could be an optimum triad compound for potential application in photovoltaic devices.

Abstract
Amino acid-modified carbon interfaces have huge applications in developing electrochemical sensing applications. Earlier reports suggested that the amine group of amino acids acted as an oxidation center at the amino acid-modified electrode interface. It was interesting to locate the oxidation centers of amino acids in the presence of guanidine. In the present work, we modeled the arginine-modified carbon interface and utilized frontier molecular orbitals and analytical Fukui functions based on the first principle study computations to analyze arginine-modified CPE (AMCPE) at a molecular level. The frontier molecular orbital and analytical Fukui results suggest that the guanidine (oxidation) and carboxylic acid (reduction) groups of arginine act as additional electron transfer sites on the AMCPE surface. To support the theoretical observations, we prepared the arginine-modified CPE (AMCPE) for the cyclic voltammetric sensing of dopamine (DA). The AMCPE showed excellent performance in detecting DA in blood serum samples.

The Dual Descriptor Reveals the Janus–Faced Behaviour of Diiodine. Front Chem 2022; 10:869110. Abstract
The Janus–faced ligand behavior of diiodine (I2) was evidenced after applying the dual descriptor (DD or second-order Fukui function), thus providing additional support to the work performed by Rogachev and Hoffmann in 2013. Along with its capacity to reveal sites susceptible to undergo attacks simultaneously of nucleophilic and electrophilic types, another advantage of DD lies in being an orbital-free descriptor. That means it is based only upon total electron densities when written in its most accurate operational formula. This quality is not exclusive of DD because when Fukui functions are written in terms of electron densities instead of densities of frontier molecular orbitals, they become orbital-free descriptors too. Furthermore, the present work is an application of the generalized operational formula of the dual descriptor published in 2016 that takes into account any possible degeneracy in frontier molecular orbitals. As a proof about capabilities of DD, the possible sites for a favorable interaction between I2 with two organometallic compounds [Rh2(O2CCF3)4] and [(C8H11N2)Pt (CH3)] were correctly revealed by overlapping the biggest lobe for receiving nucleophilic attacks of one molecule with the biggest lobe for receiving electrophilic attacks of the other molecule, so allowing to predict the same coordination modes as experimentally known: linear “end–on” for the [(C8H11N2)Pt (CH3)]…I2, and bent “end–on” for the [Rh2(O2CCF3)4]…I2 interactions.

Abstract
In the current work, the authors analyzed and compared the chemical behavior of some (anti)aromatic compounds. The species selected are benzene and cyclobutadiene as the aromatic and antiaromatic classical examples, respectively. Next, the anion Al 4 2 - , which is the first all-metal molecule catalogued as aromatic and its non-metallic isoelectronic analog, B 4 2 - were also analyzed. The antiaromatic clusters Al 4 4 - and B 4 4 - were studied in form of lithium salts. And the end, the non-planar B 12 boron cluster and its isoelectronic analogs ( B 11 Be - and B 11 C + ) were considered for being analyzed under the same criterium. The analysis was realized employing the following descriptors: molecular electrostatic potential and local hyper-softness to get insights concerning local reactivity when facing reagents leading to ionic or covalent interactions. The results show that all the molecules analyzed presented some specific variations in their respective local reactivity despite being labeled as aromatic compounds. This analysis provides a notion that the local reactivity is more based on the nature of the atoms and the molecular geometry than the aromatic character by itself.

Abstract
Synthesis of 5-aryl-N-(pyrazin-2-yl)thiophene-2-carboxamides (4a–4n) by a Suzuki cross-coupling reaction of 5-bromo-N-(pyrazin-2-yl)thiophene-2-carboxamide (3) with various aryl/heteroaryl boronic acids/pinacol esters was observed in this article. The intermediate compound 3 was prepared by condensation of pyrazin-2-amine (1) with 5-bromothiophene-2-carboxylic acid (2) mediated by TiCl4. The target pyrazine analogs (4a–4n) were confirmed by NMR and mass spectrometry. In DFT calculation of target molecules, several reactivity parameters like FMOs (EHOMO, ELUMO), HOMO–LUMO energy gap, electron affinity (A), ionization energy (I), electrophilicity index (ω), chemical softness (σ) and chemical hardness (η) were considered and discussed. Effect of various substituents was observed on values of the HOMO–LUMO energy gap and hyperpolarizability. The p-electronic delocalization extended over pyrazine, benzene and thiophene was examined in studying the NLO behavior. The chemical shifts of 1H NMR of all the synthesized compounds 4a–4n were calculated and compared with the experimental values.

Abstract
DFT-derived reactivity descriptors and Non-Covalent interaction (NCI) analysis were performed to rationalize the regioselectivity in the amination reaction of some isoquinolinequinone derivatives. Statistical analysis was performed to assess robustness of atomic charges to the basis set. Various electronic population schemes including Mulliken population analysis (MPA), electrostatic method (ChelpG), Hirshfeld population analysis (HPA) and Natural population analysis (NPA) have been considered. The results revealed that NPA was the most efficient for this purpose. NCI study using the reduced density gradient (RDG) was performed for revealing weak interactions. Domains defined by isosurfaces of RDG have been integrated to quantitatively study the strength of weak interactions and their stabilities have also been examined. Steric hindrance caused by coordination of ethanol with the neighboring carbonyl prevents the nucleophilic attack on C-6 and therefore leads to preferential C-7 substitution. The quantitative study of NCI clearly demonstrates that the hydrogen bond of carbonyl (2) is more stabilizing. Consequently, the high polarity of hydrogen bond on this carbonyl may explain the high electrophilicity of C-5 compared to C-8. Our work proved that the difference in local reactivity, as well as the steric hindrance are the key elements explaining the high regioselectivity exhibited by the amination reaction.

Abstract
Eight novel metal-free organic sensitizers were proposed for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), theoretically calculated and studied via density functional theory with D-π-A structure. These proposals were formed to study the effect of novel π-bridges, using carbazole as the donor group and cyanoacrylic acid as the anchorage group. Through the M06/6-31G(d) level of theory, ground state geometry optimization, vibrational frequencies, the highest occupied molecular orbital, the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, and their energy levels were calculated. Further, chemical reactivity parameters were obtained and analyzed, such as chemical hardness (η), electrophilicity index (ω), electroaccepting power (ω+) and electrodonating power (ω-). Free energy of electron injection (ΔGinj) and light-harvesting efficiency (LHE) also were calculated and discussed. On the other hand, absorption wavelengths, oscillator strengths, and electron transitions were calculated through time-dependent density functional theory with the M06-2X/6-31G(d) level of theory. In conclusion, the inclusion of thiophene groups and the Si heteroatom in the π-bridge improved charge transfer, chemical stability, and other optoelectronic properties of carbazole-based dyes.

Abstract
In the present work density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent semiempirical ZNIDO/S (TD-ZNIDO/S) methods have been used to investigate the ground state geometries, electronic structures and excited state properties of triad systems. The influences of the type of metal in the porphyrin ring, change in bridge position and porphyrine-ZnP duplicate on the energies of frontier molecular orbital and UV-Vis spectra has been studied. Geometry optimization, the energy levels and electron density of the Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital (HOMO) and the Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital (LUMO), chemical hardness (η), electrophilicity index (ω), electron accepting power (ω+) were calculated using ZINDO/S method to predict which molecule is the most efficient with a great capability to be used as a triad molecule in solar industry. Moreover the light harvesting efficiency (LHE) was calculated by means of the oscillator strengths which are obtained by TD-ZINDO/S calculation. Theoretical studies of the electronic spectra by ZINDO/S method were helpful in interpreting the observed electronic transitions. This aspect was systematically explored in a series of C60-Porphyrine-Metalloporphyrine (C60-P-Mp) triad system with M being Fe, Co, Ni, Ti, and Zn. Generally, transition metal coordination compounds are used as effective sensitizers, due to their intense charge-transfer absorption over the whole visible range and highly efficient metal-to-ligand charge transfer. We aim to optimize the performance of the title solar cells by altering the frontier orbital energy gaps. The results reveal that cell efficiency can be enhanced by metal functionalization of the free base porphyrin. Ti-porphyrin was found to be the most efficient dye sensitizer for dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on C60-P-Mptriad system due to C60-Por-TiP complex has lower chemical hardness, gap energy and chemical potential as well as higher electron accepting power among other complexes. In addition, the performance of solar cells favors better with doubly and increasing the π conjugated of the bridge.

Abstract
Thiosemicarbazones display diverse pharmacological properties, including antimalarial activities. Their pharmacological activities have been studied in depth, but little of this research has focused on their antimalarial mode of action. To elucidate this antimalarial mechanism, we investigated the nature of the interactions between iron(III) protoporphyrin IX (Fe(III)PPIX) and the thione-thiol tautomers of 4-methoxyacetophenone thiosemicarbazone (MAPTSC). Dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D3), the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), the noncovalent interaction (NCI) index, the electron localization function (ELF), the localized orbital locator (LOL), and thermodynamic calculations were employed in this work. Fe(III)PPIX-MAPTSC binding is expected to inhibit hemozoin formation, thereby preventing Fe(III)PPIX detoxification in plasmodia. Preliminary studies geared toward the identification of atomic binding sites in the thione-thiol tautomers of MAPTSC were carried out using molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) maps and conceptual DFT-based local reactivity indices. The thionic sulfur and the 2 N-azomethine nitrogen/thiol sulfur of, respectively, the thione and thiol tautomers of MAPTSC were identified as the most favorable nucleophilic sites for electrophilic attack. The negative values of the computed Fe(III)PPIX-MAPTSC binding energies, enthalpies, and Gibbs free energies are indicative of the existence and stability of Fe(III)PPIX-MAPTSC complexes. MAPTSC-Fe(III) coordinate bonds and strong hydrogen bonds (N-H···O) between the NH2 group in MAPTSC and the C=O group in one propionate side chain of Fe(III)PPIX are crucial to Fe(III)PPIX-MAPTSC binding. QTAIM, NCI, ELF, and LOL analyses revealed a subtle interplay of weak noncovalent interactions dominated by dispersive-like van der Waals interactions between Fe(III)PPIX and MAPTSC that stabilize the Fe(III)PPIX-MAPTSC complexes.

Abstract
Three benzimidazole-based organic dyes, possessing the same triphenylamine donors and cyanoacrylic acid acceptors with the bithiophene π-bridges combined in different nuclear positions of benzimidazole, were investigated in the utility of dye-sensitizer solar cells. The structure, molecular orbital and energy, absorption spectra and some important parameters (such as light harvesting efficiency (LHE), electron injection driving force, the electron injection time, chemical reactivity parameters, vertical dipole moment as well as interaction models of dye-I2) were obtained according to Newns–Anderson model and DFT calculation. The process and strength of charge transfer and separation were visualized with charge different density and index of spatial extent (S, D and Δq). Current work paid attention to the new T-shaped dyes to reveal the relation between the structure and photoelectric performance. Furthermore, nine dyes (substitution of alkyl chains and π-bridges) have been designed and characterized to screen promising sensitizer candidates with excellent photo-electronic properties.

An Experimental and Theoretical Investigation of the Electronic Structures and Photoelectrical Properties of Ethyl Red and Carminic Acid for DSSC Application. Abstract
The photoelectrical properties of two dyes-ethyl red and carminic acid-as sensitizers of dye-sensitized solar cells were investigated in experiments herein described. In order to reveal the reason for the difference between the photoelectrical properties of the two dyes, the ground state and excited state properties of the dyes before and after adsorbed on TiO₂ were calculated via density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT). The key parameters including the light harvesting efficiency (LHE), the driving force of electron injection ( Δ G inject ) and dye regeneration ( Δ G regen ), the total dipole moment ( μ normal ), the conduction band of edge of the semiconductor ( Δ E CB ), and the excited state lifetime (τ) were investigated, which are closely related to the short-circuit current density ( J sc ) and open circuit voltage ( V oc ). It was found that the experimental carminic acid has a larger J sc and V oc , which are interpreted by a larger amount of dye adsorbed on a TiO₂ photoanode and a larger Δ G regen , excited state lifetime (τ), μ normal , and Δ E CB . At the same time, chemical reactivity parameters illustrate that the lower chemical hardness (h) and higher electron accepting power (ω⁺) of carminic acid have an influence on the short-circuit current density. Therefore, carminic acid shows excellent photoelectric conversion efficiency in comparison with ethyl red.

Abstract
By means of the Spin-Polarized Conceptual Density Functional Theory (SP-CDFT), three 2,6-bis(imino)pyridine catalysts based on iron(II), used for polymerization of ethylene, were studied. The catalysts differed by the substituent group, bearing either -H, -NO2 or -OCH3. To date, catalytic activity, a purely experimental parameter measuring the mass of polyethylene produced per millimole of iron per time and pressure unit at a fixed temperature, has not been explained in terms of local hyper-softness. The latter is a purely theoretical parameter designed for quantifying electronic effects; it is measured using the metal atom responsible for the coordination process with the monomer (ethylene). Because steric effects are not relevant in these kinds of catalysts and only electronic effects drive the catalytic process, an interesting link is found between catalytic activity and the local hyper-softness condensed on the iron atom by means of four functionals (B3LYP, BP86, B97D, and VSXC). This work demonstrates that the use of local hyper-softness, predicted by the SP-CDFT, is a suitable parameter for explaining order relationships among catalytic activity values, thus quantifying the electronic influence of the substituent group inducing this difference; the use of only net electric charges does not lead to clear conclusions. This finding can aid in estimating catalytic activities leading to a more rational design of new catalysts via computational chemistry.

Abstract
The M06 family of density functionals has been assessed for the calculation of the molecular structure and properties of the Isonaringin flavonoid that can be an interesting material for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC). The chemical reactivity descriptors have been calculated through chemical reactivity theory within DFT (CR-DFT). The active sites for nucleophilic and electrophilic attacks have been chosen by relating them to the Fukui function indices and the dual descriptor f ((2))(r). A comparison between the descriptors calculated through vertical energy values and those arising from the Janak's theorem approximation have been performed in order to check for the validity of the last procedure.

Abstract
A density functional theory study of eight oxicams was carried out in order to determine their global and local reactivities. These types of reactivities were measured by means of global and local reactivity descriptors coming from the conceptual density functional theory. Net electrophilicity as a global reactivity descriptor and local hypersoftness as a local reactivity descriptor were the used tools to distinguish reactivity and selectivity among these oxicams. Globally, isoxicam presents the highest electron donating capacity; meanwhile, the highest electron accepting capacity is exhibited by droxicam. Locally, two oxicams present neither nucleophilic nor electrophilic relevant reactivity in their peripheral pyridine ring, droxicam and tenoxicam, so that their more reactive zones are found on the respective fused rings. Oxicams have been divided into two subgroups in order to facilitate the local analysis of reactivity. One group is characterized because their most important condensed values for local hypersoftnes are well-separated: 4-meloxicam, lornoxicam, meloxicam, and normeloxicam. Meanwhile, the opposite situation is found in droxicam, isoxicam, piroxicam, and tenoxicam. As a whole, the nucleophilic characteristic noticeably predominates in these eight oxicams instead of an electrophilic behavior, thus meaning a greater tendency to donate electrons rather than withdrawing them; a consequence of this behavior implies a favorable interaction with a hypothetical receptor bearing one or more electron acceptor functional groups rather than electron donor functional groups; this would imply a maximization of this interaction from the covalent point of view.

Abstract
This theoretical work applied density functional theory (DFT) to study the ground state of the indigo molecule and the effects of substituents. B3LYP was employed with the 6-31G[d,p] basis set. The obtained energies were used to describe the local reactivity [Δf(r)]. The effects of the substituents on the local reactivity were dependent on the molecular positions of the substituents.
