Abstract
Antimicrobials should be used judiciously when managing gastrointestinal disorders in exotic animals. Oral administration of antibiotics targeting gram-positive flora must be avoided in hindgut fermenters. Immunosuppressives may be indicated for certain infectious diseases, such as chronic enteric coronavirus in ferrets and avian ganglioneuritis in parrots.

Abstract
Upper respiratory infections (URIs) in rabbits are of significant concern, presenting diagnostic challenges and necessitating targeted antimicrobial stewardship. This study aimed to evaluate the etiological bacteria causing URIs in rabbits and their antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Thailand during 2022, while exploring potential correlations between tropical meteorological factors and URI occurrence. For year-round diagnosis, seventy-eight companion rabbits with snuffles were confirmed infection based on bacterial culture. Antimicrobial susceptibility was tested using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines. Meteorological data were obtained from the Meteorological Department of Thailand, Ministry of Digital Economy and Society and used for analyzing the climate influences. The results showed that highest URI occurrence could be found during the rainy season (46.15%, 95% CI 35.53-57.14%), with a significant correlation between URI occurrence and precipitation (r = 0.66, p = 0.02). Gram-negative bacteria were the predominant pathogens (67.95%, 95% CI 56.96-77.25%), particularly Pseudomonas spp., Acinetobacter spp., Enterobacter spp., and Pasteurella multocida. Consequently, AMR profiles revealed high resistance to penicillin and co-trimoxazole, with multidrug resistance common among major bacterial groups. These findings highlight the influence of tropical climate on URI occurrence and the growing AMR challenge in companion rabbits, underscoring the need for region-specific monitoring and antimicrobial stewardship.

Abstract
The role of veterinary doctors, particularly those dedicated to Zoological Medicine, is becoming increasingly relevant and essential within the One Health framework. Educational and employment opportunities in this field vary widely across Europe, prompting us to characterise the sector in Portugal and Spain. A survey was conducted, resulting in 169 valid responses from veterinarians. Respondents were characterised based on gender, age, work environment, the highest level of education, additional training, whether they attended zoological medicine classes at university and their perception of the adequacy of that training. Further factors included years of experience, the percentage of their work involving zoological medicine, sectors they work in, the types of animals they treat, their confidence in treating these animals, sources of information they use, and membership in relevant professional associations. Relationships between these variables were examined. The results describe Iberian professionals working with non-traditional pets, wildlife, and zoo animals. Notably, only half of these professionals had taken zoological medicine classes at university; among those, the majority felt they inadequately prepared them for their work. Given the findings, enhancing the training and resources available to these professionals is crucial to prepare them for their roles better.

Abstract
A 12-year-old male eclectus parrot (Eclectus roratus) was referred for evaluation of coelomic distention. Computed tomography and blood work revealed coelomic effusion with free coelomic mineral-attenuating material and elevations in the bile acids and aspartate aminotransferase activity, respectively. Coelomic effusion was consistent with macrophagic inflammation with abundant intracellular lipids. Initial treatment with meloxicam resulted in minimal patient improvement. Disseminated xanthogranulomatous inflammation was suspected based on imaging and diagnostic laboratory results, which were consistent with those previously reported. Biopsy samples of liver tissue and intracoelomic masses confirmed this diagnosis. Treatment was initiated with prednisolone 1 mg/kg/d for 6 months, followed by 0.5 mg/kg/d for 3 months. Clinical improvement was assessed based on owner evaluation, plasma bile acid concentrations, and repeated computed tomographic scans. After 2 months of treatment, the owner reported improved behavior and appetite; this persisted throughout treatment and when the bird was reexamined 17 months following the cessation of steroid therapy. Bile acid concentrations were normal 10 months after the prednisolone therapy was discontinued. Diagnostic imaging showed minimal coelomic effusion 10 months after the last prednisolone dose was administered, with improved ventilation of the air sacs and static to improved dystrophic mineral foci. This report describes the antemortem diagnosis and treatment of disseminated coelomic xanthogranulomatous disease in a psittacine species, with an observed measurable therapeutic response.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the pharmacodynamic effects and pharmacokinetics of a single intramuscular (IM) injection of alfaxalone in central bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps) when injected at a cranial versus a caudal site. STUDY DESIGN Prospective, masked, randomized crossover study. ANIMALS A total of 13 healthy bearded dragons weighing 0.48 ± 0.1 kg. METHODS Alfaxalone (10 mg kg-1) was administered IM to 13 bearded dragons in the triceps muscle (cranial treatment) or the quadriceps muscle (caudal treatment) separated by 4 weeks. Pharmacodynamic variables included movement score, muscle tone score and righting reflex. Blood was obtained from the caudal tail vein using a sparse sampling methodology. Plasma alfaxalone concentrations were determined using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and pharmacokinetic analysis was performed using nonlinear mixed-effects modeling. Differences in variables between injection sites were analyzed using a nonparametric Wilcoxon signed-rank test for paired data with significance set at p ≤ 0.05. RESULTS Time to loss of righting reflex score was not different, median (interquartile range), between cranial and caudal treatments [8 (5-11) and 8 (4-12) minutes, respectively, p = 0.72]. Time to recovery of righting reflex was also not different between cranial and caudal treatments [80 (44-112) and 64 (56-104) minutes, respectively, p = 0.75]. Plasma alfaxalone concentrations were not significantly different between treatments. The population estimate (95% confidence intervals) for volume of distribution per fraction absorbed was 1.0 (0.79-1.20) L kg-1, clearance per fraction absorbed was 9.6 (7.6-11.6) mL minute-1 kg-1, absorption rate constant was 2.3 (1.9-2.8) minute-1 and elimination half-life was 71.9 (52.7-91.1) minutes. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Regardless of the injection site, IM alfaxalone (10 mg kg-1) produced reliable chemical restraint in central bearded dragons, appropriate for nonpainful diagnostic procedures or anesthetic premedication.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the clinical signs and outcome following ivermectin overdose in a bearded dragon. This case also describes the novel use of intravenous lipid emulsion (ILE) as a rescue therapy in reptiles, as well as the use of aggressive gastrointestinal decontamination. CASE SUMMARY A 4-year-old female intact bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) (0.6 kg) was admitted to the ICU at a specialty hospital following accidental overdose of 40 mg (66.7 mg/kg) of ivermectin enterally. The patient was physically inverted to allow passive reflux of the medication, then sedated for gastric lavage. A 20% ILE was administered intravenously due to the high risk for fatality. Additional treatments included 2 doses of activated charcoal, as well as SC fluids, enteral nutrition, and sucralfate. The patient was profoundly sedate until day 4 when mild improvements in mentation were noted. The patient started ambulating on its own on day 6 and was discharged from the hospital on day 13. The patient was alive 720 days postdischarge. NEW OR UNIQUE INFORMATION PROVIDED This is the first case report describing the events following ivermectin overdose and the use of ILE therapy and activated charcoal in a bearded dragon. These therapies were tolerated with no adverse effects noted in this patient. This report provides evidence that complete recovery from ivermectin overdose is possible.

Abstract
Domestic guinea pigs suffer morbidity and mortality due to a range of bacterial infections amongst other causes. Microorganisms such as Bordetella bronchiseptica and Streptococcus pneumoniae are commonly implicated in respiratory disease; however, there is a lack of research surrounding the prevalence of these bacterial infections. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency with which owners reported bacterial infections in pet guinea pigs and to assess owner knowledge of correct husbandry practices to inform prevention of the development of bacterial infections. An online questionnaire, consisting of 30 questions was promoted to guinea pig owners. Of all respondents (n = 524), 39.39% reported that their guinea pig(s) had been clinically diagnosed with a bacterial infection, with upper respiratory tract infections the most commonly reported (46.95%), followed by urinary tract (15.49%) and then gastrointestinal infections (11.73%). Owners demonstrated knowledge of correct husbandry practices and there was no significant effect (p = 0.475) of owner knowledge on having owned a guinea pig with a bacterial infection. Bacterial infections may be more common in guinea pigs than was previously thought. Further research is required to understand why bacterial infections are common in pet guinea pigs and to help owners to prevent and recognize these infections.

Abstract
A 1-y-old spayed female ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was referred for additional diagnostic evaluation after physical examination by the referring veterinarian revealed a cranial abdominal mass. The ferret had a 2-wk history of inappetence, weight loss, and lethargy. On presentation, the ferret was thin, and an approximately 3-cm mass was palpable in the cranial abdomen. No other abnormalities were noted. Abdominal ultrasonography confirmed the presence of a soft-tissue structure, with a moderate blood supply and mesenteric lymphadenopathy. Fine-needle aspirates of the mass were nondiagnostic. Exploratory laparotomy revealed multiple nodules and thickened tissues throughout the mesentery, a thickened and nodular pancreas, and a small amount of free abdominal fluid. Histopathology of mesenteric, lymphatic, and pancreatic biopsies revealed suppurative pancreatitis and necrotizing and pyogranulomatous mesenteric steatitis. Positive immunohistochemistry for feline coronavirus confirmed a diagnosis of ferret systemic coronavirus disease (FSCD). The ferret was treated medically with oral prednisolone, improved dramatically, and was still doing well 22 mo after diagnosis. Although FSCD has been reported extensively, this case is noteworthy for the presence of suppurative pancreatitis and the positive long-term outcome after corticosteroid therapy.
