Effect of the composite photoactivation mode on microtensile bond strength and Knoop microhardness

Incremental filling technique and composite material--part I: cuspal deformation, bond strength, and physical properties

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the effect of composite resins (one conventional and two low-shrink composites) and filling techniques on cuspal strains (CS), microtensile bond strength (μTBS), composite ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and mechanical properties of the composites at various depths in molars with large Class II restorations.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

One hundred seventeen human molars received standardized Class II mesio-oclusal-distal cavity preparations and restorations with three composites (Filtek LS [3M-ESPE]; Aelite LS [BISCO]; and Filtek Supreme [3M-ESPE]) using three filling techniques (bulk, eight increments, and 16 increments). CS was measured using strain gauges, after which the same restored teeth were used to assess μTBS and UTS. The elastic modulus (E) and Vickers hardness (VH) at different depths were determined from microhardness indentations. The CS, μTBS, UTS, E, and VH data were statistically analyzed using split-plot analysis of variance and Tukey test (p=0.05).

RESULTS

The CS was higher when using 16 increments. The 'low-shrink' composites caused lower CS. The μTBS and UTS were similar for eight- and 16-increment techniques and higher when compared to the bulk filling in all composites. E and VH were constant through the depth when applied in eight or 16 increments.

CONCLUSIONS

Type of composite and filling technique affected the CS, μTBS, UTS, and mechanical properties of large Class II restorations. The eight-increments filling technique resulted in generally less CS with the same μTBS and UTS than was obtained with 16 increments, without affecting E and VH through the depth of the composites.

Influence of the LED curing source and selective enamel etching on dentin bond strength of self-etch adhesives in class I composite restorations

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the LED curing unit and selective enamel etching on dentin microtensile bond strength (μTBS) for self-etch adhesives in class I composite restorations. On 96 human molars, box-shaped class I cavities were made maintaining enamel margins. Self-etch adhesives (Clearfil SE - CSE and Clearfil S(3) - S3) were used to bond a microhybrid composite. Before adhesive application, half of the teeth were enamel acid-etched and the other half was not. Adhesives and composites were cured with the following light curing units (LCUs): one polywave (UltraLume 5 - UL) and two single-peak (FlashLite 1401 - FL and Radii Cal - RD) LEDs. The specimens were then submitted to thermomechanical aging and longitudinally sectioned to obtain bonded sticks (0.9 mm(2)) to be tested in tension at 0.5 mm/min. The failure mode was then recorded. The μTBS data were submitted to a three-way ANOVA and Tukey's (α = 0.05). For S3, the selective enamel-etching provided lower μTBS values (20.7 ± 2.7) compared to the non-etched specimens (26.7 ± 2.2). UL yielded higher μTBS values (24.1 ± 3.2) in comparison to the photoactivation approach with FL (18.8 ±3.9) and RD (19.9 ±1.8) for CSE. The two-step CSE was not influenced by the enamel etching (p ≥ 0.05). Enamel acid etching in class I composite restorations affects the dentin μTBS of the one-step self-etch adhesive Clearfil S(3), with no alterations for Clearfil SE bond strength. The polywave LED promoted better bond strength for the two-step adhesive compared to the single-peak ones.

Effect of Light Activation Mode on the Incompatibility Between One-bottle Adhesives and Light-cured Composites: An In Vitro Shear Bond Strength Study

Low dentin bond strength has been previously documented when one-bottle adhesives are used with self-cured resin-based composites. Low dentin bond strength may also occur when one-bottle adhesives are used with light-cured resin-based composites that are activated by soft-start or pulse-delay curing strategies.

Monomer conversion and cytotoxicity of dental composites irradiated with different modes of photoactivated curing

The aim of the study was to compare the monomer conversion and cytotoxicity of two resin composites, Tetric Ceram (TC) and Heliomolar (HM), irradiated with a halogen light-curing unit (Optilux 501) using a number of curing modes, boost (OB), ramp (OR), and conventional (OC), as well as a light-emitting diode (LED) curing unit (LEDemetron; LEDe). The effects of irradiation times (10, 20, 30, and 40 s) were also investigated. The monomer conversion of resin composites was measured using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis. Resin samples were preimmersed in Dulbeco's modified engles medium (DMEM) for 24 h, and the periodontal ligament cells (PDL) were cultured with aged medium for 72 h to evaluate the cytotoxic effects of resin samples using the microtiter-tetrazolium (MTT) method. The spectral outputs of the curing units were also compared. After irradiation using the same curing mode, the TC monomer conversion was higher than the HM analog. The TC conversion value was lower after OC and LEDemetron irradiation for 10 s compared to exposures of 30 and 40 s. The HM conversion value was lowest for the 10-s OC irradiation, and highest for the 40-s OC exposure. In cytotoxicity tests, the negative control group was without irradiation. The succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activities of the OB and OR-irradiated TC samples were significantly lower than analogs irradiated with LEDemetron for 40 s; however, no significant differences were demonstrated between OB, OR, and control groups. Further, no significant differences in SDH activity were demonstrated for OB, OR, and control groups of the HM.

The Effect of Energy Application Sequence on the Microtensile Bond Strength of Different C-factor Cavity Preparations

Light curing of resin composites in high C-factor cavity preparations using a high irradiance energy application sequence may lead to decreased bond strength. However, the high irradiance energy application sequence did not result in lower bond strengths in lower C-factor cavity preparations.

Effects on microstrain and conversion of flowable resin composite using different curing modes and units

The flowable resin composite, Tetric Flow, was used to measure microstrain and degree of conversion after hardening with each of three curing machines: XL3000(XL) for 10, 20, 30, and 40 s; Optilux 501 using conventional mode (OC) for 10, 20, 30, and 40 s, as well as Optilux boost (OB, 10 s) and ramp modes (OR, 20 s); and LEDemetron (LEDe) for 10, 20, 30, and 40 s. The emitted power density and spectral distribution of the three light curing units were also measured. The LEDe output energy spectrum was centralized between 425 and 490 nm, which encompasses the excited wavelength of camphorquinone. The microstrain produced by the curing process is as a second-degree polynomial for each light source. The OB microstrain was highest, while the OR microstrain was lower. The ranking in order of degree of monomer conversion was as follows: XL10 <or=<or= OC10 <or=<or= LED 10 = OR = XL 20 = OC 20 = XL 30 <or=<or= LED 20 <or=<or= OC30 = LED 40 = XL 40 = OC40 = LED 30 <or= OB. The degree of conversion cured with OB was significant higher than other curing modes except OC30, OC40, LEDe30, LEDe40, and XL40. The conversion value of XL10 was the lowest. The LEDe produced higher conversion for the same emitted energy compared to the two halogen units.
