The synergistic effect and microscopic mechanism of co-adsorption of three emerging contaminants and copper ion on gemini surfactant modified montmorillonite

Enhancing the supercapacitive performance of a carbon-based electrode through a balanced strategy for porous structure, graphitization degree and N,B co-doping

Regarding carbon-based electrodes, simultaneously establishing a well-defined meso-porous architecture, introducing abundant hetero-atoms and improving the graphitization degree can effectively enhance their capacitive performance. However, it remains a significant challenge to achieve a good balance between defects and graphitization degree. In this study, the porous structure and composition of carbon materials are co-optimised through a 'dual-function' strategy. Briefly, K3Fe(C2O4)3 and H3BO3 were hybridised with a gelatin aqueous solution to form a homogeneous composite hydrogel, followed by lyophilisation and carbonisation. Owing to the dual functionality of raw materials, the graphitization, activation and hetero-atom doping processes can occur simultaneously during a one-step high-temperature treatment. The resultant carbon material exhibits a high graphitization degree (ID/IG = 0.9 ± 0.1), high hetero-atom content (N: 9.0 ± 0.3 at.%, B: 6.9 ± 0.5 at.%) and a large specific area (1754 ± 58 m2/g). The as-prepared electrode demonstrates a superior capacitance of 383 ± 1F g-1 at 1 A/g. Interestingly, the cyclic voltammetry (CV) curves exhibit a distinctive pair of broad redox peaks, which is uncommon in KOH electrolyte. Experiment data and density functional theory (DFT) simulation verify that N-5, B co-doping enhances the activity of the faradic reaction of carbon electrodes in KOH electrolyte. Furthermore, the fabricated Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitor (ZHSC) based on this carbon electrode delivers a high-energy density of 140.7 W h kg-1 at a power density of 840 W kg-1.

A review of social-ecological system vulnerability in desertified regions: Assessment, simulation, and sustainable management

Desertified regions face considerable vulnerability due to the combined effects of climate change and human activities, which threaten regional ecological security and societal development. It is therefore necessary to assess, simulate, and manage the vulnerability of desertified regions from the perspective of the social-ecological system, to support desertification control and sustainable development. This study is a systematic review of the vulnerability of the social-ecological system in desertified regions (SESDR) based on a bibliometric analysis, and a summary of the research progresses in vulnerability assessment, simulation, and sustainable management is provided. It was found that SESDR vulnerability research started relatively late, but has developed rapidly in recent years, with an emphasis on the coupling between natural systems and human activities, and multi-scale interactions and dynamics. Using various indicators at different scales, SESDR vulnerability could be assessed in terms of exposure, sensitivity, and adaptability. Modeling the complex interactions among natural and human factors across multiple scales is essential to simulate the vulnerability dynamics of the SESDR. The sustainable management of SESDR vulnerability focuses on rational spatial planning to achieve the maximum benefits, with the right measures in the right places. Four priority research directions were proposed to develop a better understanding of the mechanisms of vulnerability and smart restoration of desertified land. The findings of this study will enable researchers, land managers, and policymakers to develop a more comprehensive understanding of SESDR vulnerability, thereby enabling them to better address the challenges posed by complex resource and environmental issues.

A bipolar organic molecule towards the anion/cation-hosting cathode compatible with polymer electrolytes for quasi-solid-state dual-ion batteries

Ion concentration and mobility are tightly associated with the ionic conductance of polymer electrolytes in solid-state lithium batteries. However, the anions involved in the movement are irrelevant to energy generation and cause uncontrolled dendritic growth and concentration polarization. In the current study, we proposed the strategy of using a bipolar organic molecule as the anion/cation-hosting cathode to expand the active charge carriers of polymer electrolytes. As a proof-of-concept demonstration of the novel strategy, a bipolar phthalocyanine derivative (2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octamethoxyphthalocyaninato) Ni(II) (NiPc-(OH)8) that could successively store anions and cations was used as the cathode hosting material in quasi-solid-state dual-ion batteries (QSSDIBs). Interestingly, peripheral polyhydroxyl substituents could build a compatible interface with poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoro propylene-based gel polymer electrolytes (PVDF-HFP). As expected, NiPc-(OH)8 displays a high specific capacity of 248.2 mAh/g (at 50 mA g-1) and improved cyclic stability compared with that in liquid electrolyte. This study provides a solution to the issue of anion migration and could open another way to build high-performance QSSDIBs.

Electroreductive Defluorination of Unsaturated PFAS by a Quaternary Ammonium Surfactant-Modified Cathode via Direct Cathodic Reduction

Remediation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in groundwater remains a technological challenge due to the trace concentrations of PFAS and the strength of their C-F bonds. This study investigated an electroreductive system with a quaternary ammonium surfactant-modified cathode for degrading (E)-perfluoro(4-methylpent-2-enoic acid) (PFMeUPA) at a low cathodic potential. A removal efficiency of 99.81% and defluorination efficiency of 78.67% were achieved under -1.6 V (vs Ag/AgCl) at the cathode modified by octadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (OTAB). The overall degradation procedure started with the adsorption of PFMeUPA onto the modified cathode. This adsorption process was promoted by hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions between the surfactants and PFMeUPA, of which the binding percentage, binding mode, and binding energy were determined via molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The step-wise degradation pathway of PFMeUPA, including reductive defluorination and hydrogenation, was derived. Meanwhile, C-F bond breaking with direct electron transfer only was achieved for the first time in this study, which also showed that the C═C bond structure of PFAS facilitates the C-F cleavage. Overall, this study highlights the crucial role of quaternary ammonium surfactants in electron transfer and electrocatalytic activities in the electroreductive system and provides insights into novel remediation approaches on PFAS-contaminated groundwater.

Effect of Cu2+ on Corrosion Behavior of A106B Carbon Steel and 304L Stainless Steels in Seawater

The corrosion behaviors of A106B carbon steel and 304L stainless steel (SS) in seawater with different Cu²⁺ concentrations were studied by the immersion test and the potentiodynamic polarization test. The results showed that with the increasing Cu²⁺ concentration, the mass lot rates of A106B and 304L SS all increased in the immersion test, and compared with A106B, the mass lot rates of 304L SS were all smaller. In the potentiodynamic polarization test, following the concentration of Cu²⁺ increased, the corrosion potential of A106B firstly shifted negatively; then, when Cu²⁺ increased to 100 ppm, the polarization curve moved to the upper right direction; namely, both the corrosion potential and corrosion electrical density increased. The corrosion potential of 304L SS increased with the increasing Cu²⁺, and the passive region was reduced; the pitting sensitivity improved.

A novel separation method of the valuable components for activated clay production wastewater

The acidic wastewater produced by the wet production of activated clay contains valuable components such as iron and aluminum. The precipitation method was successfully introduced to separate iron and aluminum from the activated clay production wastewater step by step, which can not only recover the valuable components, but also avoid environmental pollution. In the separation process, gypsum, iron aluminum phosphate, alumina, and sodium sulfate were prepared, and the phase compositions of separation products were analyzed by XRD and IR. The main influencing factors in the separation of iron and aluminum components were studied by single factor experiment. The results show that at the optimized conditions, phosphorus/iron molar ratio 6.0, the system pH 3.0, the reaction temperature 343 K, and the reaction time 90 min, the iron(iii) ion in the system can form a sodium-containing aluminum iron phosphate double salt, and the filtrate after separating Fe3+ and part of Al3+ can meet the requirements for forming high-purity Al2O3. During the phosphate precipitation process, the hypothesis should be correct that Al3+ reacts with PO 4 3 − {\text{PO}}_{4}^{3-} to form an AlPO4 skeleton, Fe3+ isomorphically replaces Al3+ in the [AlO4] tetrahedron, and adsorption occurs simultaneously, with Na+ occupying the terminal acid sites, P(Al)–OH.

Leaching characteristics of heavy metals in tailings and their simultaneous immobilization with triethylenetetramine functioned montmorillonite (TETA-Mt) against simulated acid rain

For further understanding leaching characteristics of heavy metals in tailings and better immobilization on heavy metals against acid rain, batch experiments were conducted. The leaching results of Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Mn(II) can be well fit by second-order kinetics equation, and Pb(II) can be well fit by two-constant equation. The leaching intensity of heavy metals in tailings was ranged as: Mn(II)> Cu(II)> Cd(II)> Zn(II)> Pb(II). Triethylenetetramine functioned montmorillonite (TETA-Mt) was successfully synthesized and can obtain simultaneous immobilization effect compared with Mt and TETA, and immobilization rates on Cu(II), Cd(II), Mn(II) and Zn(II) can reach above 90%, the immobilization rate on Pb(II) can reach more than 75%. The mechanisms for efficient immobilization of heavy metals on TETA-Mt included buffering and adsorption abilities. The mechanism for TETA-Mt adsorption of heavy metals included physical absorption, chelation and chemical sedimentation. The results showed that TETA-Mt can be applied to effective immobilization of heavy metals in tailings and efficient remediation of acid mine drainage (AMD) in acid rain area.

Emerging pollutants-Part II: Treatment

Emerging pollutants (EPs) refer to a class of pollutants, which are emerging in the environment or recently attracted attention. EPs mainly include pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). EPs have potential threats to human health and ecological environment. In recent years, the continuous detections of EPs in surface and ground water have brought huge challenges to water treatment and also made the treatment of EPs become an international research hotspot. This paper summarizes some research results on EPs treatment published in 2019. This paper may be helpful to understand the current situations and development trends of EP treatment technologies.

Nanocellulose–organic montmorillonite nanocomposite adsorbent for diuron removal from aqueous solution: optimization using response surface methodology

Herbicides have been ubiquitous in water environments in recent years, and so it is an appealing proposition to develop an efficient adsorbent for the adsorption of diuron. Therefore, the present study investigated a cellulose nanocrystal/organic montmorillonite nanocomposite adsorbent (CNC/CTM) and its adsorption properties towards diuron present in water. The structure and characteristics of the adsorbent used in this study were characterized by various characterization methods. The optimal diuron adsorption conditions for the CNC/CTM nanocomposite were analyzed based on the response surface methodology (RSM). The adsorption isotherms and kinetics of diuron adsorption were investigated. The results indicated that the adsorption process is the result of hydrogen bonding and the hydrophobicity of the alkyl chain. Under the optimal adsorption conditions, 0.07 g L⁻¹ CNC/CTM adsorbed 5.86 mg L⁻¹ diuron in less than 318.68 min and an efficiency of 82.32% could be achieved. The simulation results showed that the adsorption capacity of CNC/CTM for diuron removal followed the Sips model most closely. The maximum adsorption capacity was approximately 69.04 mg g⁻¹ at 288 K. The experimental data was described best by a pseudo-second-order kinetic equation, signifying a chemical adsorption process. The adsorbent can be reused at least five times after simple solvent washing. This study provides a theoretical basis for understanding the adsorption process of diuron present in water.

CNCs and CTM were combined to obtain a nanocomposite used to remove diuron in water. The adsorption of the nanocomposite was analyzed using response surface methodology, isothermal adsorption model and adsorption kinetics.
