Towards an adaptive model for simulating growth of marine mesozooplankton: A macromolecular perspective

Graph neural networks and transfer entropy enhance forecasting of mesozooplankton community dynamics

Mesozooplankton are critical components of marine ecosystems, acting as key intermediaries between primary producers and higher trophic levels by grazing on phytoplankton and influencing fish populations. They play pivotal roles in the pelagic food web and export production, affecting the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and nutrients. Therefore, accurately modeling and visualizing mesozooplankton community dynamics is essential for understanding marine ecosystem patterns and informing effective management strategies. However, modeling these dynamics remains challenging due to the complex interplay among physical, chemical, and biological factors, and the detailed parameterization and feedback mechanisms are not fully understood in theory-driven models. Graph neural network (GNN) models offer a promising approach to forecast multivariate features and define correlations among input variables. The high interpretive power of GNNs provides deep insights into the structural relationships among variables, serving as a connection matrix in deep learning algorithms. However, there is insufficient understanding of how interactions between input variables affect model outputs during training. Here we investigate how the graph structure of ecosystem dynamics used to train GNN models affects their forecasting accuracy for mesozooplankton species. We find that forecasting accuracy is closely related to interactions within ecosystem dynamics. Notably, increasing the number of nodes does not always enhance model performance; closely connected species tend to produce similar forecasting outputs in terms of trend and peak timing. Therefore, we demonstrate that incorporating the graph structure of ecosystem dynamics can improve the accuracy of mesozooplankton modeling by providing influential information about species of interest. These findings will provide insights into the influential factors affecting mesozooplankton species and emphasize the importance of constructing appropriate graphs for forecasting these species.

Will Invertebrates Require Increasingly Carbon-Rich Food in a Warming World?

Elevated temperature causes metabolism and respiration to increase in poikilothermic organisms. We hypothesized that invertebrate consumers will therefore require increasingly carbon-rich diets in a warming environment because the increased energetic demands are primarily met using compounds rich in carbon, that is, carbohydrates and lipids. Here, we test this hypothesis using a new stoichiometric model that has carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) as currencies. Model predictions did not support the hypothesis, indicating instead that the nutritional requirements of invertebrates, at least in terms of food quality expressed as C∶N ratio, may change little, if at all, at elevated temperature. Two factors contribute to this conclusion. First, invertebrates facing limitation by nutrient elements such as N have, by default, excess C in their food that can be used to meet the increased demand for energy in a warming environment, without recourse to extra dietary C. Second, increased feeding at elevated temperature compensates for the extra demands of metabolism to the extent that, when metabolism and intake scale equally with temperature (have the same Q₁₀), the relative requirement for dietary C and N remains unaltered. Our analysis demonstrates that future climate-driven increases in the C∶N ratios of autotroph biomass will likely exacerbate the stoichiometric mismatch between nutrient-limited invertebrate grazers and their food, with important consequences for C sequestration and nutrient cycling in ecosystems.

Ageing and Caloric Restriction in a Marine Planktonic Copepod

Planktonic copepods are a key group in the marine pelagic ecosystem, linking primary production with upper trophic levels. Their abundance and population dynamics are constrained by the life history tradeoffs associated with resource availability, reproduction and predation pressure. The tradeoffs associated with the ageing process and its underlying biological mechanisms are, however, poorly known. Our study shows that ageing in copepods involves a deterioration of their vital rates and a rise in mortality associated with an increase in oxidative damage (lipid peroxidation); the activity of the cell-repair enzymatic machinery also increases with age. This increase in oxidative damage is associated with an increase in the relative content of the fatty acid 22:6(n-3), an essential component of cell membranes that increases their susceptibility to peroxidation. Moreover, we show that caloric (food) restriction in marine copepods reduces their age-specific mortality rates, and extends the lifespan of females and their reproductive period. Given the overall low production of the oceans, this can be a strategy, at least in certain copepod species, to enhance their chances to reproduce in a nutritionally dilute, temporally and spatially patchy environment.
