Abstract
The applications of 2-hydroxy-β-nitrostyrenes as efficient bifunctional intermediates in organic synthesis are investigated in this review. For this purpose, reactions of 2-hydroxy-β-nitrostyrenes with diverse molecules, including carbonyl compounds, 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds, α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds, hemiacetals, nitroalkenes, γ-butenolides, tetronic acid, azalactones, pyrazolones, enamines, malononitrile, methyleneindolinones, ylides, etc., were investigated to construct interesting biologically active scaffolds such as chromans, chromenes, coumarins, benzofurans and their fused and spiro rings, natural products, and other useful cyclic and acyclic compounds. The main focus is on the asymmetric synthesis of these compounds via cascade/domino/tandem reactions catalyzed by chiral organocatalysts. In this review, around 60 papers reported between the years 2000 and 2022 are presented.

Abstract
A facile silver-catalyzed oxidative decarboxylation of arylthiodifluoroacetic acids or aryloxydifluoroacetic acids with coumarins/quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones was developed. This transformation provided a series of C-3 aryloxydifluoromethylated or arylthiodifluoromethylated coumarins/quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones containing various functional groups in moderate to good yields, featuring good functional group tolerance, easily accessible starting materials and operational simplicity.

Abstract
Chromene and its derivatives are generally spread in nature. Heterocylic-based compounds like chromenes have displayed pharmacological activities. Chromene derivatives are critical due to some biological features such as anticancer activity. CML, chronic myelogenous leukemia, is a fatal malignancy determined by resistance to apoptosis and contains the Philadelphia chromosome. Induction of apoptosis is one of the main approaches in cancer therapy. In this research, benzochromene derivative, 2-amino-4-(4-methoxy phenyl)-4H-benzochromene-3-carbonitrile (4-MC) was tested for cytotoxic and apoptotic induction activities in the human leukemic K562 cell line. The MTT growth inhibition assay was used to determine the cellular growth and survival. Moreover, the binding attribute of 4-MC with double helix DNA was assessed by some spectroscopic and viscosity measurement, and also for docking analysis. 4-MC exhibited good cytotoxicity on K562 cell line and the IC50 value was calculated to be 30 µM. Furthermore, the mechanisms of apoptosis induction were determined morphologically by fluorescence dual staining with acridine orange and ethidium bromide and cell cycle analysis was based on DNA content, as well as the presence of phosphatidyl serine on the outside of the cells by the flow cytometric method. The results showed that 4-MC had potent cytotoxic activity via sub-G1 cell cycle arrest and induction of apoptosis. The experimental and simulation studies reported that 4-MC binds to ctDNA through groove binding mode with the binding constant (Kb) of 2.5 × 103 M-1. These data represent a considerable anticancer potential of 4-MC and could be suggested for further pharmacological studies.

Abstract
Kojic acid, one of the most widespread 3-hydroxypyran-4-one derivatives, displays
a wide range of biological activities and found application in food as well as cosmetics
industry. The synthesis of kojic acid derivatives has provoked great interest as an easily
available and biologically active precursor among organic and medicinal researchers. Multicomponent
reactions, involving three or more reactants in one-pot thereby resulting in a
structure with functional diversity are efficient methods for the promotion of green chemistry
in the context of modern drug discovery. They offer several advantages over conventional
stepwise protocols like simplicity, efficiency, selectivity, convergence and atom economy.
This review aims to highlight the versatility of kojic acid as an important synthon in multicomponent
reactions for the construction of various biologically relevant compounds such as pyrano[3,2‐
b]chromenediones, pyrano[3,2-b]pyrans, pyrano[2′,3′:5,6]pyrano[2,3‑b]pyridines, spiro[indoline-3,4’-pyrano[3,
2-b]pyrans, 2-substituted kojic acid conjugates, etc.

Abstract
2-Naphthol or β-naphthol is an important starting material that has drawn great attention in various organic transformations because of its attributes, such as low cost, easy to handle and eco-friendliness. The electron-rich aromatic framework of 2-naphthol with multiple reactive sites allows it to be utilized in several kinds of organic reactions eventuated to several organic molecules with potent biological properties. Multicomponent reaction approach has been tremendously utilized to explore the synthetic utility of 2-naphthol for the construction of diverse N/O-containing heterocyclic framework. In this review, we summarize recent data pertaining to multicomponent reactions, wherein heterocyclic compounds are synthesized utilizing 2-naphthol as one of the starting materials. It is anticipated that this review will stimulate the researchers to design new multicomponent strategies complying with the Green Chemistry principles for the further exploitation of 2-naphthol for the rapid synthesis of versatile biologically relevant heterocycles. This review provides a concise overview of the different 2-naphthol based multicomponent reactions utilized for the construction of diverse bioactive heterocyclic scaffold.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Synthetic azo compounds and their derivatives have been studied extensively due to their biological and pharmacological activities. Pyranopyridines, pyranopyrimidines and tetrazoles derivatives have emerged as a promising and attractive scaffold in the development of potent biological and pharmacological agents. OBJECTIVES To design a series of new benzochromeno(pyridine/pyrimidine/tetrazole) derivatives and evaluate their antimicrobial activity against some bacterial strains (Gram-positive and Gram-negative) and some fungal strains. MATERIALS AND METHODS The (E)-7-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-(phenyldiazenyl)-10-thioxo-7,9,10,11-tetrahydro-8Hnaptho[ 1,2-b]pyrano[2,3-d]pyrimidin-8-one (4) was synthesized by the reaction of 4H-naphtho[1,2-b]pyran-3- carbonitrile (3) with carbon disulfide in alcoholic potassium hydroxide solution. Reaction of 3 with sodium azide in DMF and in presence of ammonium chloride afforded 6-(phenyldiazenyl)-3-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-4Hbenzo[ h]chromen-2-amine (7) while with malononitrile, thiourea or urea gave chromeno[2,3-b]pyridine-9- carbonitrile (8), chromeno[2,3-d]pyrimidine-10-thione (9) and chromeno[2,3-d]pyrimidin-10-one (10), respectively. The assignment structures were established on the basis of spectral data. RESULTS In this study, the antimicrobial activity of the synthesized compounds 3-12 was examined for their in vitro antimicrobial activity by using agar diffusion method such as Mueller-Hinton agar medium for bacteria and Sabouraud's agar medium for fungi. Ampicillin and mycostatine were included in the experiments as reference drugs. CONCLUSION A series of new benzochromeno(pyridine/pyrimidine/tetrazole) derivatives were synthesized in this work. All compounds were evaluated in antimicrobial activities.

Abstract
Three new series of chromene molecules have been synthesized in order to explore their antimicrobial activity. The series encompass 2-substituted 14-(4-halophenyl)-12-methoxy-14H-benzo[h]chromeno[3,2-e][1,2,4]-triazolo[1,5-c]pyrimidines 7a-o, 9-benzylideneamino-7-(4-halo-phenyl)-5-methoxy-8-imino-7H-benzo-[h]chromeno[2,3-d]pyrimidines 8a-b and 3-ethoxycarbonyl-14-(4-halophenyl)-12-methoxy-14H-benzo-[h]chromeno[3,2-e][1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-c]pyrimidine-2-one derivatives 12a-b. The structure of these novel compounds were confirmed using IR, ¹H- and 13C-NMR as well as MS spectroscopy. The new compounds were evaluated in vitro for their antimicrobial activity and it was demonstrated that 7H-benzochromenopyrimidine and derivatives of 14H-benzochromenotriazolopyrimidine exhibited the most promising antibacterial activities compared to the reference antimicrobial agents. The structure activity relationship (SAR) studies of the target compounds agreed with the in vitro essays and confirmed higher potent antimicrobial activity against some of the tested microorganisms.

Abstract
An enantioselective synthesis of benzopyrano[3,4-c]pyrrolidine derivatives via organocatalyzed [3 + 2] cycloaddition has been achieved. Cinchona alkaloid-derived organocatalysts as Brønsted bases have been examined for this asymmetric cycloaddition of o-hydroxy aromatic aldimines with 3-substituted coumarins. An unexpected rearrangement of the quaternary acyl moiety in the products resulted in an in situ protection of the o-hydroxy group.

Abstract
Bis-(4-hydroxycoumarin-3-yl) methane derivatives 3(a-l) were synthesized from 4-hydroxycoumarin and substituted aromatic aldehydes using succinimide-N-sulfonic acid as catalyst and evaluated for their in vitro antileishmanial activity against promastigotes form of Leishmania donovani. Compounds 3a (IC50= 155 μg/mL), 3g (IC50= 157.5 μg/mL) and 3l (IC50= 150 μg/mL) were shown significant antileishmanial activity when compared with standard sodium stibogluconate (IC50= 490 μg/mL). Also, synthesized compounds 3(a-l) did not show cytotoxicity against HeLa cell line upto tested concentrations. Further, molecular docking study against Adenine phosphoribosyltransferase of Leishmania donovani showed good binding interactions. ADME properties were analyzed and showed good oral drug candidate like properties. The synthesized compounds were also shown good drug likeness and drug score values when compared with drugs currently used in therapy. The present study has helped us in identifying a new lead that could be exploited as a potential antileishmanial agent.

Abstract
In the title compound, C20H13ClN2O, the chloro-benzene ring is almost perpendicular to the mean plane of the naphthalene ring system, making a dihedral angle of 81.26 (8)°. The 4H-pyran ring fused with the naphthalene ring system has a flattened boat conformation. In the crystal, N-H⋯N hydrogen bonds generate chains along the b-axis direction. Further N-H⋯N hydrogen bonds link these chains into sheets parallel to (010). The crystal packing also features C-H⋯π inter-actions. The crystal studied was an inversion twin with a 0.557 (16):0.443 (16) domain ratio.

Abstract
Chromenes constitute chemically important class of heterocyclic compounds having diverse biological and chemical importance. Development of environmentally benign, efficient and economical methods for the synthesis of chromenes remains a significant challenge in synthetic chemistry. The synthesis of chromenes, therefore, has attracted enormous attention from medicinal and organic chemists. Researchers have embraced the concepts of microwave (high speed) synthesis to produce biologically and chemically important chromenes in a time sensitive manner. This review will summarize the recent biological applications such as anticancer, antimicrobial, neurodegenerative and insecticidal activity of new chromenes prepared via microwave irradiation. The development of new methodologies for the synthesis of chromenes including green chemistry processes has also been discussed.

Abstract
Rutin (compound 5) and some compounds (compounds 1-4 and 6) were isolated from Artemisia princeps Pamp (A. princeps Pamp.) and a series of novel rutin derivatives containing 1,4-pentadien-3-one moiety were designed and synthesized. The target compounds were characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H NMR), carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((13)C NMR), and ESI-MS. Bioassay results indicated that some of the compounds showed good to excellent antiviral activities against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) at 500 μg/mL in vivo. The 50% effective concentrations (EC50) of the compound 7r against CMV was 394.78 μg/mL, which was better than that of Ningnanmycin (432.22 μg/mL). These results indicated that novel rutin derivatives containing 1,4-pentadien-3-one moiety can effectively control CMV.
