Abstract
Terbium is a rare-earth element with critical importance for industry. Two adsorbents of different origin, In2O3 nanoparticles and the biological sorbent Arthrospira platensis, were applied for terbium removal from aqueous solutions. Several analytical techniques, including X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, were employed to characterize the adsorbents. The effect of time, pH, and terbium concentration on the adsorption efficiency was evaluated. For both adsorbents, adsorption efficiency was shown to be dependent on the time of interaction and the pH of the solution. Maximum removal of terbium by Arthrospira platensis was attained at pH 3.0 and by In2O3 at pH 4.0-7.0, both after 3 min of interaction. Several equilibrium (Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin) and kinetics (pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, and Elovich) models were applied to describe the adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity was calculated from the Langmuir model as 212 mg/g for Arthrospira platensis and 94.7 mg/g for the In2O3 nanoadsorbent. The studied adsorbents can be regarded as potential candidates for terbium recovery from wastewater.

Abstract
Rapid technological, industrial and agricultural development has resulted in the release of large volumes of pollutants, including metal ions, into the environment. Heavy metals have become of great concern due to their toxicity, persistence, and adverse effects caused to the environment and population. In this regard, municipal and industrial effluents should be thoroughly treated before being discharged into natural water or used for irrigation. The physical, chemical, and biological techniques applied for wastewater treatment adsorption have a special place in enabling effective pollutant removal. Currently, plenty of adsorbents of different origins are applied for the treatment of metal-containing aqueous solution and wastewater. The present review is focused on mesoporous materials. In particular, the recent achievements in mesoporous materials' synthesis and application in wastewater treatment are discussed. The mechanisms of metal adsorption onto mesoporous materials are highlighted and examples of their multiple uses for metal removal are presented. The information contained in the review can be used by researchers and environmental engineers involved in the development of new adsorbents and the improvement of wastewater treatment technologies.

Abstract
Mercury emissions from the industrial sector have become an undeniable concern for researchers due to their toxic health effects. Efforts have been made to develop green, efficient, and reliable methods for removal of mercury from wastewater. Sorption process promises fruitful results for the decontamination of cations from wastewater. Among the number of used sorbents, metal sulfides have been emerged as an appropriate material for removing toxic metals that possess good affinity due to sulfur-based active sites for Hg through "Lewis's acid-based soft-soft interactions." Herein, nickel-sulfide nanoparticles were synthesized, followed by their incorporation in chitosan microspheres. FTIR analysis confirmed the synthesis of nickel sulfide-chitosan microspheres (NiS-CMs) displaying sharp bands for multiple functional groups. XRD analysis showed that the NiS-CMs possessed a crystallite size of 42.1 nm. SEM analysis indicated the size of NiS-CMs to be 950.71 μm based on SEM micrographs. The sorption of mercury was performed using the NiS-CMs, and the results were satisfactory, with a sorption capacity of 61 mg/g at the optimized conditions of pH 5.0, 80 ppm concentration, in 60 min at 25 °C. Isothermal models and kinetics studies revealed that the process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isothermal model best fitted to experimental data. It was concluded that the NiS-CMs have emerged as the best choice for removing toxic mercury ions with a positive impact on the environment.

Abstract
Excessive concentrations of nitrate (NO3-N) in water lead to the deterioration of water quality, reducing biodiversity and destroying ecosystems. Therefore, the present study investigated NO3-N removal from simulated wastewater by nanoscale zero-valent iron-supported ordered mesoporous Zr-Ce-SBA-15 composites (nZVI/Zr-Ce-SBA-15) assisted by response surface methodology (RSM), an artificial neural network combined with a genetic algorithm (ANN-GA) and a radial basis neural network (RBF). The successful support of nZVI on Zr-Ce-SBA-15 was confirmed using XRD, FTIR, TEM, SEM–EDS, N2 adsorption and XPS, which indicated ordered mesoporous materials. The results showed that ANN-GA was better than the RSM for optimizing the conditions of NO3-N removal and the RBF neural network further confirmed the reliability of the ANN-GA model. The removal rate of NO3-N by the composites reached 95.71% under the optimized experimental conditions (initial pH of 4.89, contact time = of 62.27 min, initial NO3-N concentration of 74.84 mg/L and temperature of 24.77 °C). The process of NO3-N adsorption onto Zr-Ce-SBA-15 composites was followed by the Langmuir model (maximum adsorption capacity of 45.24 mg/g), pseudo-second-order kinetics, and was spontaneous, endothermic and entropy driven. The yield of N2 can be improved after nZVI was supported on Zr-Ce-SBA-15, and the composites exhibited a strong renewability in the short term within three cycles. The resolution of Fe2+ experiments confirmed that nZVI/Zr-Ce-SBA-15 was simultaneously undergoing adsorption and catalysis in the process of NO3-N removal. Our study suggests that the ordered mesoporous nZVI/Zr-Ce-SBA-15 composites are a promising material for simultaneously performing NO3-N removal and improving the selectivity of N2, which provides a theoretical reference for NO3-N remediation from wastewater.

Abstract
This study utilized a facile and scalable one-pot wet impregnation method for Hg(II) adsorption to prepare sulfur-anchored palm shell waste activated carbon powder (PSAC-S). The experimental results revealed that the sulfur precursors promote the surface charge on the PSAC and enhance Hg(II) removal via the Na2S > Na2S2O4 > CH3CSNH2 sequence. PSAC-S prepared using Na2S had significant Hg(II) sorption efficiencies, achieving a maximum sorption capacity of 136 mg g-1 from the Freundlich model. Compared to PSAC, PSAC-S had an enhancement in Hg(II) sorption behavior for heterogeneous interactions with sulfur. PSAC-S also demonstrated high Hg(II) sorption capacities over a wide range of solution pH, while ionic strength had an insignificant impact on Hg(II) removal efficiencies. Through various spectroscopic analyses, we identified the mechanisms of Hg(II) removal by PSAC-S as electrostatic interactions, Hg-Cl complexation, and precipitation as HgSO4. Moreover, PSAC-S unveiled high adsorption affinity and Hg(II) stability in actual groundwater (even in µg L-1 level). These overall results show the potentials of PSAC-S as an alternative, easily scalable material for in-situ Hg(II) remediation.

Abstract
In order to improve the adsorption capacity of natural layered double hydroxyl (LDH) materials, the natural organic sources such as algae containing hydroxyl groups, amino groups, peptide connections, and alginate structures were used to improve LDH for the preparation of ZnMgAl LDH-algae composites (LDH-Ax). The structure of prepared composites was established and characterized via various techniques such as scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The LDH-A2 sample displayed the highest efficiency for Cr(VI) removal, which reached to 99% at the optimum conditions. The prepared composite LDH-A2 showed high stability and reusability (91.7%) after five cycles. The kinetic studies revealed that the Cr uptake by LDH-A1 is described as pseudo-first order, while the case of LDH-A2 is described as pseudo-second order. This study reported that the easily synthesized LDH-Ax has an interesting environmental approval process to eliminate Cr ions from aqueous media quickly and effectively.

Abstract
The mesoporous silica-polymer hybrid was prepared as an adsorbent for divalent heavy metals (Pb(II), Ni(II), and Cu (II)) from rice husk and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) through three successive steps. The first is the preparation of the mesoporous silica (SBA-15), the second is grafting 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane on SBA-15, and the following step is the formation of Schiff base (PVP-SBA-15) between amine end-capped silica and PVP moieties. The materials were characterized by different techniques, including FTIR, low and wide-angle XRD, N2-adsorption, and HR-TEM. The NH2-SBA-15 displayed a moderate affinity toward heavy element ions under study. Grafting of PVP moieties introduces a high affinity toward heavy metal ions, and the adsorption is a well-fitted Langmuir adsorption model. A series of experiment adsorption equilibrium reported with SBA-15, NH2-SBA-15, and PVP-SBA-15, which showed an adsorption capacity of 128 mg/g (Cu (II)), 175 mg/g (Pb (II)) and 72 mg/g for Ni(II). Kinetic studies have shown that the best way to describe the adsorption process of heavy metals is pseudo-first-order. The value of ΔG°, ΔH°, and ΔS° demonstrated that the adsorption of heavy metals on the PVP-SBA-15 was endothermic in nature and spontaneous. These results exhibited that PVP-SBA-15 material has considerable competence in eliminating heavy metals from wastewater.
