Abstract
With the increasing severity of global water scarcity, a myriad of scientific activities is directed toward advancing brackish water desalination and wastewater remediation technologies. Flow-electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI), a newly developed electrochemically driven ion removal approach combining ion-exchange membranes and flowable particle electrodes, has been actively explored over the past seven years, driven by the possibility of energy-efficient, sustainable, and fully continuous production of high-quality fresh water, as well as flexible management of the particle electrodes and concentrate stream. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview of current advances of this interesting technology with particular attention given to FCDI principles, designs (including cell architecture and electrode and separator options), operational modes (including approaches to management of the flowable electrodes), characterizations and modeling, and environmental applications (including water desalination, resource recovery, and contaminant abatement). Furthermore, we introduce the definitions and performance metrics that should be used so that fair assessments and comparisons can be made between different systems and separation conditions. We then highlight the most pressing challenges (i.e., operation and capital cost, scale-up, and commercialization) in the full-scale application of this technology. We conclude this state-of-the-art review by considering the overall outlook of the technology and discussing areas requiring particular attention in the future.

Abstract
Nitrogen doped hierarchical porous carbon materials (HPCs) was achieved by the successful carbonization, using pig lung as biomass precursor. Three-dimensional HPCs constituted with sheets and lines were synergistically inherited from original pig lung. Such structure provided a large specific surface area (958.5 g-1 m2) and rich porous, effectively supported a large number of electro-active species, and greatly enhanced the mass and electron transfer. High graphitization degree of HPCs resulted in good electrical conductivity. Furthermore, the different electronegativity between nitrogen and carbon atoms in HPCs could affect the electron cloud distribution, polarity and then the electrochemical oxidation kinetics of dihydroxybenzene isomers. Based on these characteristics of HPCs, the electrochemical sensor for dihydroxybenzene isomers exhibited high sensitivity, excellent specificity and stability. Quantitative analysis assays by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) technology showed that the sensor has wide linear ranges (0.5-320, 0.5-340 and 1-360 μmol L-1) and low detection limits (0.078, 0.057 and 0.371 μmol L-1) for the catechol, resorcinol and hydroquinone, respectively. This proposed method was successfully applied for simultaneous detection of dihydroxybenzene isomers in river water.

Abstract
Human metabolism is investigated using several in vitro methods. However, the current methodologies are often expensive, tedious and complicated. Over the last decade, the combination of electrochemistry (EC) with mass spectrometry (MS) has a simpler and a cheaper alternative to mimic the human metabolism. This paper describes the development of a disposable microfluidic device with a screen-printed electrode (SPE) for monitoring phase II GSH reactions. The proposed chip has the potential to be used as a primary screening tool, thus complementing the current in vitro methods.

Abstract
AbstractA new differential pulse voltammetric method for dopamine determination at a bare glassy carbon electrode has been developed. Dopamine, ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA) usually coexist in physiological samples. Because AA and UA can be oxidized at potentials close to that of DA it is difficult to determine dopamine electrochemically, although resolution can be achieved using modified electrodes. Additionally, oxidized dopamine mediates AA oxidation and the electrode surface can be easily fouled by the AA oxidation product. In this work a chemometrics strategy, partial least squares (PLS) regression, has been applied to determine dopamine in the presence of AA and UA without electrode modification. The method is based on the electrooxidation of dopamine at a glassy carbon electrode in pH 7 phosphate buffer. The dopamine calibration curve was linear over the range of 1–313 μM and the limit of detection was 0.25 μM. The relative standard error (RSE %) was 5.28%. The method has been successfully applied to the measurement of dopamine in human plasma and urine.

Abstract
The performance of a single-walled carbon nanotube:graphite-based electrode, prepared by mixing single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and graphite powder, is described. The resulting electrode shows an excellent behavior for the redox of caffeic acid (CA), an important biological molecule. Due to the existing resemblance between electrochemical and biological reactions, it can be assumed that the oxidation mechanisms on the electrode and in the body share similar principles. SWCNT:graphite-based electrode presents a significant decrease in the overvoltage for the CA oxidation as well as a dramatic improvement in the reversibility of the CA redox behavior in comparison with the graphite-based and glassy carbon (GC) electrodes.

Abstract
A simple method using an unmodified edge plane pyrolytic graphite electrode (EPPGE) is reported for the simultaneous determination of dopamine (DA), serotonin (ST) and ascorbic acid (AA). The performance of this electrode is superior to other unmodified carbon-based electrodes and also to many modified electrodes in terms of detection limit, sensitivity and peak separation for determination of DA, ST and AA. Using this method, detection limits of 90 nM, 60 nM and 200 nM were obtained for DA, ST and AA respectively. No electrode fouling is observed during a set of experiments and good sensitivity is obtained for the simultaneous determination of DA, ST and AA. The peaks for the three species are well resolved from each other and the electrode is successfully utilised for their determination in standard and real samples.
